Sally Hepworth's The Good Sister is a fabulous read. I loved the character of Fern and the authentic insight into the world of sensory processing disorder. Her relationship with the somewhat mysterious but down to earth Wally was delightful. Unexpected twists and turns associated with Rose really accelerated to a dramatic and powerful climax. Overall a thoroughly enjoyable and highly recommended read. Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this fabulous novel.
It is strange to describe a thriller as charming but that is how I felt. I loved ‘The Good Sister’ by Sally Hepworth. It is an easy, suspenseful and enjoyable read. It fully occupied my attention from start to finish. The interaction between Fern and ‘Wally’, both verbal and non verbal, is delightful. I also liked Fern’s self talk. The book is thrilling and, at times, humourous.
Fern and Rose are fraternal twins. Fern is on the spectrum and Rose has assisted her by providing life lessons on how to fit into society. Fern works successfully as a librarian and meets Wally (named for his resemblance to the ‘Where’s Wally’ character). Wally has secrets also and an abundance of empathy due to a possible mental breakdown after he developed a successful and lucrative dating ap. Fern and Wally are attracted to each other and affection blossoms.
There is history of a disastrous event in Fern’s childhood which is slowly revealed. There is also a disparity in the respective memories of Fern’s and Rose’s early lives. This results in conflict and drama.
The characters are well drawn. The twists are clever. I recommend this great read.
