This was some CREEPY STUFF! I devoured this in about a day and was still wanting more when it ended. The development of each character was strong, as always with Lucinda Berry. I adored the passion Casey had for children with ASD and the way she was able to empathize with them based on her daughters needs. The ending shocked the pants off me and I still can’t believe I didn’t see it coming honestly. Berry just has a way of making you completely forget how to figure out what’s happening. Only thing that kept this from being a 5 star read for me was sometimes it felt repetitive but that didn’t take away from the overall experience! A lovely book and boy did it have me sleeping with the lights on
Lucinda berry is one of my favorite psychological thriller authors, she has never disappointed before and don’t do so now either.
The book follows Genieveve and Casey, after a murder where Genieveve’s autistic son finds the dead body. We soon realize that something isn’t quite right, especially when Casey, a clinical psychologist working with autism herself, gets involved in the murder investigation.
As always the book was fast-paced, you simply needed to know what would happen next. Even if it was pretty obvious what was going on, it didn’t make the book less enjoyable to read. The horrible truth was revealed little by little. I liked that we got small glimpses of what had happened from the autists point of view. The plot was original, and although a bit extreme it wasn’t too far fetched. Some parents should never have become parents and they say that reality is always stranger than fiction.
There were some loose threads that left me a bit unsatisfied. It felt like an annoying cliffhanger. What happened after the last altercation between the two POVS? Would have loved an ending that didn’t feel so rushed.
Truly enjoyed myself when reading under her care, too bad that it probably will be a long time before her next book is published.
Thanks to netgally and Amazon publishing for this arc in exchange of my honest review.
Lucinda Berry has been my favorite author for many, many years and I will always read anything written by her. With that being said, this was not one of my favorites. The story was engaging, but I did guess one of the twists very early on and it is a trope that I have read way too much lately so it wasn’t shocking.
Overall, I did enjoy the way the whole thing wrapped up, and one of the twists at the end definitely took me by surprise.
I love how each one of her books are completely different and I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next.
I'm SO SAD. Lucinda Berry's newest is... not it for me. We follow the murder of a rich woman in a small southern town and the only suspect is a teenaged boy with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Our main character is brought on as a 'consultant' on the case as she's an ASD counselor and mother of a daughter with ASD. If you're unfamiliar with common thriller tropes then you'll probably enjoy this, however to any avid readers I would not recommend due to the predictability of the story. I was left thinking, what was the purpose of this book?
Lucinda Berry never disappoints... this is a wild story that will leave you confused and thinking about it for a while, it certainly did that to me.
How she crafted the narrative, I don't know, but she did great. A never seen before take on the whole crazy, "dotting", attention sicker mother, who truly believes the sky is the limit.
Something very interesting about this book is that you get the POV of Genevieve, the mother of Mason, and you get to see throughout the book just how far she is willing to go to protect her kid, her family and all her twisted secrets.
Once again, Dr. Lucinda Berry takes us all into a trip down the rabbit hole that is the human brain... and I loved every part of it.
Lucinda Berry has done it again! She has knocked it out of the park with, "Under Her Care". This is a great read!
Definitely enjoyed the book, it wasn't my favorite by the author, but it kept me guessing until the end. There were so many twists and turns. From the start I wasn't sure who to believe, Genevieve constantly changed her story and kept information from the police. Her moods and reactions were all over the place. Detective Layne seemed pretty lazy and not interested in actually finding out what really happened to Annabelle. I thought he was setting Casey up to take the blame if things didn't go his way. Why did the police let Genevieve and Mason leave the murder scene without questioning them or taking samples from them? From the start Detective Layne only saw one suspect and focused all his attention on him. That ending left me with so many questions. My initial thoughts were - NO, it can't end this way!!! Was there justice for Mason? Did Casey get charged with anything? What happened to Genevieve? When the charges were brought up about Casey, why didn't she get the footage from Walmart to show what really happened. There had to be witnesses to what happened in the parking lot. There were some CRAZY, CRAZY, CRAZY people in this book. I can't believe the lengths Genevieve went to, just for attention. It was scary how she achieved the outcome. That torture room was horrific. I never guessed the person behind the blackmailing. Then when the identity was revealed, it wasn't really shocking. The person didn't get their behavior from anyone strange. It would be shocking if she/he turned out normal after living in that household.
Definitely recommend the book. I enjoyed the characters (even though they were CRAZY), story and writing style. It was a good mystery/thriller. I look forward to reading more books by the author.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Thomas & Mercer through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Another chilling page turner written by the Queen of realistically dark and sinister psychological thrillers. Thank you Netgalley, Thomas & Mercer and Lucinda Berry for this eARC in exchange for my honest review.
On a humid summer day in Alabama, a mayor’s wife turns up brutally murdered under a railroad bridge. Standing next to her body is fourteen-year-old Mason Hill, the autistic son of former Miss USA Genevieve Hill. The locals are quick to level their verdict on young Mason: he did it.
The town detective calls in local autism expert Casey Walker to consult on the case. At first, Casey tries to keep an open mind. But the more time she spends with Genevieve, the more her unease grows, and she suspects that Genevieve is doing more than just protecting her son.
Casey’s misgivings surrounding Genevieve’s story only intensify when she meets Savannah, Genevieve’s nineteen-year-old daughter. Savannah, as it turns out, has some disturbing secrets of her own. But as Casey dives ever deeper into the Hill family dynamic, her search for the truth leads to another shocking murder—one that shatters her understanding of the human condition in ways she never imagined.
This is a brilliant read.
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable.
Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuously.
Can't wait to read what the author brings out next.
Recommend reading.
I was provided an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher. This is my own honest voluntary review.
Was so excited for this, love everything from lucinda berry but I could not get into this one! Tried several times and the audiobook book. I did finish and I think some might enjoy it, but not my favorite. Thank you NetGalley for this ARC
I was so excited to receive this, as I had heard SO many great reviews about Berry’s other books, especially The Perfect Child!
This book however, was a big miss for me! I tried so hard to get into it, and sadly the storyline was just all over the place for me. The characters dialogue between one another was boring. And all around it was just a struggle.
This one seems to be getting mixed reviews so I will absolutely try one of their other books before writing them off!
This. Oil was Published June 1st so grab it and see judge for yourself!
Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Captivating from the beginning until the end. Although, most of the book is given away from the beginning and I kind of expected what the ending would be. However, there is a twist at the end that did surprise me. Even though the story is constant and the plot of the protagonist was stated at the beginning, there is a constant intrigue that only Lucinda Berry can write that keeps the story captivating for the reader. I feel that Genevieve's character is not fully developed. I still don't understand her at the end. This book is less cringy than most of her books. It seems tame, but still very good.
Thank you to Thomas & Mercer and NetGalley for letting me read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me to read this in exchange for an honest review.
Enjoyed this book, though not as much as Berry’s other books. When the mayor’s wife is found dead with a teenage boy standing over her, it seems obvious that he did it, even though the boy has autism and no history of violence. But not everyone in town is convinced, and his mother will do whatever it takes to protect him. Pretty good but a lot of things in the plot were just too unbelievable for me. 3.5 stars.
4.5 rounded to 5
Lucinda Berry does it again!! This is my second book by Lucinda and I am officially hooked !! This book had me hooked from the first page, and didn't stop!!!
When the mayor of a town in Alabama is found murdered under a bridge, Mason Hill, the autistic son of former Miss USA, is found standing over her body. Of course the people are quick to accuse him, but Genevieve will do anything to defend and protect her son. The town detective calls in autism expert, Casey Walker to help consult on the case. While she tries to keep an open mind, she quickly discovers that Genevieve is doing a little more than protecting her son. The more she digs, the more shocking the discoveries.
This book was so good !! I love how Lucinda Berry takes her expertise, and turns her real life experiences into twisty thrillers. She has a way of making you hate the villains so much that it works so perfect. The motherhood element in this book is very strong, and shows how different mothers can be. The characters were great, the pacing was quick and the twist was crazy. I loved it and can't wait to read more !!!
Thank you Thomas & Mercer, Netgalley, and Lucinda Berry for an advanced readers copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Triggers: Physical abuse, Murder, Mental illness, Child abuse, Medical trauma, and Death of parent
Thank you Netgalley for this copy of Under Her Care by Lucinda Berry.
Well, I honestly still don't know about this one. I guess I loved and hated it at the same time. The protagonist was a so called expert but didn't know how to interact with anyone which seemed completely absurd with having over 20 years of experience in her field. For anyone with alot of triggers, yes, this has child abuse. I did however love the overall story and it blew my mind in a dark, twisted way. I just didn't care for the stupidity of the main character and the police in this. And I wanted more, I wanted to see what happens to everyone after the final few chapters. It kind of leaves you in the dust. Maybe that was the point, but I just wasn't completely satisfied. But, I will give this three stars because the plot was actually really good, it just could of been delivered way better, especially for this author.
First of all, I adore Lucinda Berry. I really waited for this one, especially when I heard this is about autism. I snagged this one up on NetGalley after publication date and will provide you with my honest opinion. This will be a long one. Thanks for letting me read it. I try to keep it spoiler free here, it’s a bit more extensive in goodreads.
I went Into the book with very mixed feelings. I knew what it was about and what the big twist was supposed to be, so I asked sie knew who read it for a spoiler. In this case I probably shot myself in the foot, as the topic is so close to my heart.
We meet at expert Casey, who is asked to help out in the investigation of a murder case. Mason - a young boy who is diagnosed with ASD - is the suspect. Genevieve, his mother is the second person, alongside Casey, who tells us this story.
I am by far no expert, but as a practical nurse working with people on the spectrum, I know my basics, at least. My native is not English, so I am sorry in advance if I am not using all the correct medical terms.
The writing is fluent and easy to pick up, typical Lucinda Berry. But that’s one of the only good things I can say about this.
I am always excited to read about anything related to autism. I have worked with people on the spectrum. That’s my experience, not first hand. I had customers with mild version, very capable and “normal” (I hate using the term, but I am lacking a better one right now, no offence meant here) and also the other end, autism combined with extrem behavioural issues. I have dealt with all kinds of violence and “weird” things. I am no saviour, I have no magic wand. I love my work, even if it’s hard at times. What I personally have learned, and it might be different for others, is to appreciate the little things, never expecting anything huge, but being happy about the small steps. That being said, most of the people I work with also had intellectual disabilities, which is a whole another story.
How great it would be if we were all “normal” and “happy”. But what is normal? My normal is someone’s else’s “different”. Differences make us special. It’s not wrong to be different. That is one problem with the autism diagnose. “You’re different”.
It’s not a disease - so I have been taught - you can’t cure it away.
The book in my opinion focuses on the wrong things and from someone with Lucindas experience, I am disappointed. The autism is an excuse and that should have made much clearer, in my opinion. In the beginning we have the snotty detective who of course has no clue. He wants his case closed. Genevieve is psychotic, if you ask me. And Casey, besides being the big expert that she is made to be, seems clueless as well. She gives us all the right information, but she doesn’t really do much with it. The story is not bad, no. But I think it’s portrayed in a wrong light. It made me super uneasy and not in a good way.
This book gripped me from the beginning and I could not put it down. I was not ready for the book to be over and wanted a little more out of the ending. I loved the multiple POVs and the characters were written so well. This was my first read by Lucinda Berry but absolutely won’t be my last! Highly recommend grabbing a copy of this book!
It was an other wonderful story by this author for me. Thank you to my buddy read, I had many problems in my life at the moment and was really slow reading this but going slow I love the books more and also here it was the case.
When I heard was about autism I had to read it couse my son is autistic. Well here was a different situation that I imaginted but was a brilliant interesting story. If it was a romance It would be a slow burning one. I was not seeing all the connection and sure I was wishing for a different ending but it makes all sense and for me was classic LB thriller, dynamic and dark at the same time.
It's official-Lucinda Berry is the newest author added to my auto-buy and auto-read list! Her work is absolutely phenomenal and does such a fantastic job weaving her previous experiences as a child psychologist into her psychological thriller writing. Working in the field of neuropsychology it's not super often that I find an author who can effectively and accurately depict various mental health, psychological disorder, and neurodivergence elements. Lucinda Berry does this FLAWLESSLY and it brings an added element to every one of her books.
This book explores themes of childhood trauma and the psychological abuse a parent can inflict on their children, although the entire book is definitely NOT just about depictions of child abuse. So while this may be a trigger for some people overall, I really think it's done in a way that doesn't unnecessarily depict or glorify these happenings. The control that a parent can have over their children is simultaneously comforting as well as terrifying.
Thank you SO much to Lucinda for sending me a NetGalley widget to read this book! I cannot wait to get my hands on more of her work and highly recommend picking this one up when it publishes on June 1st!
Loved this book! The characters, the storyline, the psychological suspense we're all amazing. It felt like this could have come straight from the headlines we too often see about the complicated dynamics of parent-child relationships. Good parenting or obsessive parenting, disability or weakness, diligent police work or landing on a suspect and having tunnel vision are all themes that are explored. Definitely not a book to miss!
