I knew I'd love this book when the setting was going to involve so many British things, especially a British boy. Swoon. This was a fun read, and one I'll probably revisit again. Thanks NetGalley for the ARC.
I am sorry for the inconvenience but I don’t have the time to read this anymore and have lost interest in the concept. I believe that it would benefit your book more if I did not skim your book and write a rushed review. Again, I am sorry for the inconvenience.
It was a great read, I loved that this novel took place in London, I missed this city so much! The romance was nice, however something was missing for me and I was a bit disappointed when I finished reading it
I really enjoyed this read! I loved the literary references and the setting and the characters. I've never read Great Expectations but you definitely don't have to for this to make sense. If YA is in the middle of juvenile/middle grade fiction and NA fiction, this definitely would lean more towards the middle grade side. Not just because of content but also the characters themselves. But overall an enjoyable read.
This is a YA contemporary romance that I LOVED!
Britt completes a scavenger hunt that takes her through the biggest scenes in some of the most well known and love pieces of literature of all time! I mean the best, Austen, Dickens or Sherlock you name it, Britt re-lived it!
Luke is the love interest and when I say I LOVE him I really do. He is the ying to Britt's yang in all the best possible ways. He is a nerdy reserved boy and she is the outgoing athlete. I love them together, literally wanted to squeeze their cheeks such a cute young romance!
The writing style and craft is so beyond any other YA book I have read recently, truly some amazing talent. The characters are well developed and clever in all the best ways. Absolutely recommend this 20x times over 5/5!
Thank you to netgalley for the ARC!
Ack! This book was so amazing!! Luke, Britt, Al... 🤩🤩🤩
So many books that I read are shallow. They spin a great story, provide a nice place to escape to and... That's about it. Yes, I enjoy those type of books as well, but they can get dull.
When compared to books that make you think, feel, and imagine how your own life could be better... They feel like child's play. Books like L&OGE make you look at your own life in ways you hadn't done before. They make you think of things you hadn't thought before. And they make you feel, truly feel. It's a soul crushing, heart wrenching experience. And I love it.
Blame it on the adorable romance, the British accents, or Britt's comedic ways, but those were all just the icing on the cake for me. Because, to me, this book is brilliant. I'm in love. Over the moon. And I don't want to shut up about this book now! Don't mind me while I go recommend it to all my friends... 🥰
Please read it! You won't regret it.
*please note: I received a copy of this book from Net Galley. All thoughts and opinions were my own.
Loved this literary scavenger hunt through England as much as I loved the kind hearts of the main characters and their unshakable consistency in being there for each other. Brilliant read!
Britt Hanson, a former soccer player who lost her scholarship due to a knee injury, enters a scavenger hunt contest in the UK sponsored by her English teacher with the hope of winning the financial prize and creating a new plan for her future. Along the way, she befriends Luke Jackson and solves clues involving classic English literature. The story is full of engaging dialogue between Britt and Luke and moves quickly from one clue to the next. The clues are easy to solve and the descriptions of the classic books make them sound appealing. The armchair travel aspect of the book is also enjoyable, especially during a time when many people are unable to travel. "Love and Great Expectations" is a delightful, quick, cozy read with clean content. The author is skilled at incorporating classic literature into the story and it would be great to see another book like it in the future.
I love books with a setting in the UK and this one definitely has it! You will follow the main character and her adventures all over England due to a scavenger hunt! Of course she will meet a British boy that will make things more interesting. Such a cute YA novel.
I love YA rom-coms. This book was such a cute book. I was so happy this book didn't have instalove in it. The main character and the love interest was so funny. I love all the book references. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes clean romance.
This was really cute, sweet and deeper than I thought it would be. The writing was enjoyable and the story was entertaining. It reminded me of A CUBAN GIRLS GUIDE TO TEA AND TOMORROW which is a favorite. I loved going around England with Britt, Luke and Al. I would have liked to get to know Al better. This was a great, fast read,
This book is the perfect YA story. I find that it was a sweet read and fun to dive into the characters. I would recommend for high school and above
This was a sweet, lighthearted romance that would be perfect for a high school reader. The setting in London was the perfect backdrop for Britt's growth as a character and she learns to use her strengths throughout the book. I also loved all of the literature references and nods, and the scavenger hunt idea was such a creative concept.
Luke was really sweet, but I wished that his backstory would have been a bit deeper—I felt like most of the book was building toward a big reveal of what happened to him, and the eventual reveal didn't feel like it quite measured up to my great expectations (pun fully intended). I also thought the ending was a bit too rushed, and an epilogue might have helped to fully wrap up all of the loose ends.
Overall, this is a really cute read that would be perfect for a younger audience. It didn't quite land with me as an adult, but I think it did a great job of capturing the confusing emotions that come with that transition between being in high school and starting your future in college.
I loved this easy and fun romance with a literature focus. A great discussion of how to change and adapt when life sends you sudden changes and hardships. Loved how the character was forced out of her comfort zone and found new loves and passions.
Great book and enjoyed the characters . loved the slight romance and the how well the group worked together. Overall a great book . I would read this author again.
I'm a sucker for a scavenger hunt. Add in anywhere in the UK and I'm in. This book took me by surprise in how much I ended up enjoying it. I'm not usually a fan of insta-love, but it just worked in this story. Would recommend. 3.5 rounded up.
YA romances arent always my thing but this one was cute! Yes, the premise is a little suspend my disbelief, but if you can, you will get a cute travel romance that explores how we define ourselves, and how to see the good in yourself even when it's hard. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an e-arc in exchange for an honest review
Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Children's for an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own.
My goodness this book is cute. It takes place in England, in all sorts of literary landmarks, with someone who goes from being very stubborn to slowly uncover the soft parts of who she can be after a life changing injury. The man she meets on this adventure is adorable (I can see why she becomes enthralled by his presence) and the literary challenges are ones that I now want to go one once I can finally make it over to the UK. This was a very clever, insightful, and deep book, all while being a light and relatively easy YA read. It hurt my heart at times, made me laugh out loud, and lived up to its title. I would definitely recommend this book.
I would imagine that, if your entire life is oriented around one thing, it can be difficult to change that. Britt seems to have a hard time envisioning herself as more than a soccer player, and changing her mindset accordingly. Throughout the novel, though, she is forced to reckon with that. I appreciated that her chronic pain is addressed, and that she is encouraged to expand her own appreciation of who she can be. Luke makes a great partner who challenges her, while also struggling with problems of his own. The English backdrop is full of little easter eggs for book nerds, and together, this all creates an endearing novel.
A scavenger hunt in England? What is not to love about that. This Romantic Comedy book will have you wanting to escape to England on holiday and meeting the love of your life.
