I honestly probably would not have heard of nor would have read it if it had not been offered on NetGalley. I read the description and was intrigued enough to request a copy. I was accepted and am so glad.
Grant is unlike most cowboys today, though he started out as a regular cowboy. Life taught him some valuable lessons, especially with rescued horses that he learned from another cowboy to "not break". He doesn't use force as he was originally taught. He learned to see past the anger and fear displayed by the abused and wild horses to find a connection. Through that connection, he allowed the horses the space and freedom to choose to come to him. Rewards for good behavior and understanding for less than stellar behavior.
His lessons with the horses attracted CEOs and employers to bring employees to his ranch to be taught how to relate to the untrained horses. Thereby they gained empathy, understanding, and patience when dealing with others. This was quite a different approach for many who were more familiar with the fast pace and competitive nature of the corporate business world.
Grant tells of his own issues that led him down this path. A first marriage that did not work out and the second chance that did. His honesty and heartfelt way of telling his story was endearing and enlightening.
I'm glad that I got the chance to read it. Maybe I'll find my way to his ranch to see him and his horses in action.
I really enjoyed this book. The stories about the horses Mr. Golliher trained were varied and some heartbreaking. I find myself repeating some of his lessons daily. There is a lot of information in the book and each reader will take something with them at the end of it. There is something new to learn for every person who reads this. It is a book I will refer to again.
