A terribly challenging devotional! That's a good thing!! I will be reading this again, more slowly, because it's so good. There was a thing or two that I may not have totally agreed with, but they were very rare, and it's basically difference of opinion. I mean, who agrees completely with anyone else, right? Overall, its a wonderful book!!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance e-copy of this book. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.
The book is designed to rotate between days of fasting and days of feasting. Each day offers a chance to “set the table” and reflect as well as “invite the feast” and pray. Erin Davis does an excellent job mixing real life experiences and struggles with Biblical examples. This book is loaded with scripture in a way that weaker devotionals often lack. This book shows us Biblical feasts and Biblical fasts and teaches us how to prayerfully make both a part of our lives. I loved it.
I wasn't familiar with Erin Davis going into this one, though I'm well-aversed on the topic. I wanted to like this, but I feel like it's already been done in more accessible ways that don't feel as down-trodden and weary. I think if this is a new perspective for someone it would be helpful, but the whole "we need to love Jesus more than food!" felt kind of elementary. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC!
I"m not usually one to read a devotional, but I enjoyed reading Fasting & Feasting! Erin Davis shares scriptures and personal insights from lived experiences to better help the reader understand the importance of both fasting and feasting. She approved the subject with wisdom, understanding food can often be a trigger point for many, and brought helpful insight to how scripture shows the believer how to feast and fast with eyes focused on God.
Fasting and Feasting fell a little flat for me. I think the concept is an important one in Scripture and in our spiritual lives, but I felt like the content was a little surface level. Maybe it was breaking it up into daily devotionals? I think it would have been nice to explore the topic in longer form.
Erin Davis is a gifted writer and Bible teacher. In Fasting and Feasting she deals with the topic of food, asking the question “Does your relationship with food come as a constant course of regret, frustration, and shame, or does it feel like a God-given blessing. These devotions use the Scripture to point us toward a right relationship with food and to see that only Jesus can truly satisfy.
I received a copy of this book from Net Galley. The opinions are my own.
Wasn't exactly fascinated by the content in this one. The cover is lovely and the author is a great one. But I guess I expected a little more from the book. Not how I thought it would have been.
I fully intend to go through this devotional more slowly as someone who has a rather intense relationship with food due to the need to stick to a therapeutic diet. The first few day's entries already gave me some great insights such as the need to reconsider my thinking that God is unconcerned about what we eat. This question hit me hard too : "have you invited God into the food rhythms of your your life?" So thought-provoking. I anticipate making a lot of notes!
I am looking forward to digging deeper into fasting and feasting and how our relationship with food can reflect our relationship with God. And how we can honor Him and grow in our relationship with Him.
Very well-written and I think a must-have for every believer who needs to eat (everybody!)
