Colleen Coble's newest series takes her readers back to Rock Harbor, MI, where law enforcement ranger Annie Pederson runs her family's camp, Tremolo Resort and Marina. Finding a dead body floating in the icy waters of Lake Superior sets Annie on a course to investigate the murder. When the death seems to tie into some other mysterious happenings, Annie realizes that keeping herself and her daughter safe may be harder than she thinks.

Jon Dustan returns to Rock Harbor to clean up, rehab, and sell the family cottage. He doesn't expect his first love, Annie, to still be there. He left to pursue his orthopedic residency, but he also left under a cloud of suspicion. He was the last person to see two young women before they disappeared without a trace. When their bodies are discovered in one of Annie's abandoned cottages, suspicion once again points to Jon. Asking Annie's help to clear his name, he doesn't expect her to become important to him again. As he and Annie work together, can he keep her safe from the killer who seems to be stalking her every move?

Coble's trademark romantic suspense is on full display in Edge of Dusk. While I'm not a huge fan of books that end in cliffhangers, this one seems to merely be setting up the next book, while tying up most of the loose ends. Having been a fairly frequent visitor to the UP, I loved seeing places I've visited in the story. I can't wait to read Dark of Night, to continue the saga.

"Normal life is not ever perfect. What kind of people would we be if God never allowed our faith to be tested? Adversity makes us stronger. I'm sorry you had such bad things happen so early in life, but God never wastes these kind of things in our lives. Bad things are never permanent, but neither are happy times. Life changes. It's supposed to."

I enjoyed this return to Rock Harbor. Since I had not "visited" this fictional town in awhile, catching up took some time. I do think that the author did a good job of summarizing the town's characters without feeling like the plot turned into a slow recap.

This book has it all small-town camaraderie, suspense and romance along with faith. When characters have been connected since childhood, there seems to be a bit stronger of a connection. Their relationship seems more enjoyable.

Annie's perspective on life is one we can all learn from. She could be bitter because of what has happened to her. Instead, she recognizes that God is the one that she needs to trust despite what is happening around her.

I did not guess who the guilty party in this title was. There was plenty of action. And for those who have enjoyed the search and rescue books by Coble, the handlers and their dogs return. Overall, I thought it was a good plot.

I did read a copy of this book through NetGalley. I wanted to read and review it. All opinions are my own.

P.S. The ending makes it clear that there will be another book in this series. So, if you are hoping everything will be wrapped up, you will be disappointed. I, for one, will be looking forward to reading the next book!

Edge of Dusk by Colleen Coble is a highly recommended romantic-suspense novel and the first book in a new series.

Nine-year-old Annie Pederson’s life changed the night her five-year-old sister was kidnapped. Twenty-four years have passed but Annie still thinks about this loss, even while she is mourning a new loss, that of her her husband and parents in a boating accident. Annie is now a law enforcement ranger, still runs the property at the Tremolo Resort and Marina she inherited, and has her eight-year-old daughter Kylie to keep her more than busy. Even when her first love, Jon Dustan, returns after nine years away, she is determined to avoid him. That goal proves to be impossible, especially when she discovers the body of a missing hiker floating by her docks. Quickly, bodies begin to appear and suspicious behavior abounds around the lake.

The plot expands and complications are added as the investigations multiply. It soon becomes clear that Annie is in danger too. Someone is targeting her. The novel is set in Rock Harbor in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on Lake Superior. Coble provides plenty of realistic details to firmly establish the setting and local atmosphere and dialogue of the area. For fans of Coble, there are cameo appearances from beloved characters.

The characters are all fully realized and their struggles are realistic. There is tension building due to the investigations and because of the still present attraction between Annie and Jon. There are moments when you have to set disbelief aside in order to enjoy the novel, but that seems relatively easy to accomplish. This is a mystery that does not need a language warning.

From the multiple plot elements, there are also multiple mysteries, some of which will be solved. The pace is quick which helps ensure the plot is compelling and interesting. There are some loose ends and unfinished plot elements that will likely be carried forward to the next book in the series. Following Edge of Dusk, is book two Dark of Night (January 2023), and book three Break of Day (July 2023).

Colleen wrote a really good book with this mystery suspense book that I received for my honest review from Net Galley. I don't think you can go wrong with this book if you love a good mystery, suspense with a bit of love entwined in it. There will definitely be a sequel to this book as Colleen leaves you hanging in the end. That is the only downfall of this book.

Edge of Dusk is a trip back to Rock Harbor on the Upper Peninsula of Lake Superior in Michigan and what a trip! I read the Rock Harbor series years ago and really enjoyed it. This new one is a great addition with chills, danger, action, twists, turns, and reconnecting. Annie Pederson has had many losses in her life. First, her younger sister was abducted while they were children, then her parents and husband were killed when their boat blew up. She only has her nine-year-old daughter Kylie. She works as a park ranger and runs her family's marina. Her hands are full. Her first love, Jon Dunstan, is back in town to renovate his family's cabin to sell. His father is with him. Jon is a successful orthopedic surgeon and his career got in the way of their engagement years ago. Jon's past creeps up when bodies of two young women he was seen with years ago are found on Annie's property. The two work together to find the killer but it just puts Annie in danger. This is a wild ride to find answers and stay alive for Annie. There are several things going on in this story to figure out, including a strange young woman named Taylor working to help Annie with Kylie, and some attacks on campers. Taylor seems to have some ulterior motive against Annie. It does end with a little bit of unfinished business in my opinion so I cannot wait to read the next in this new series. I enjoyed seeing original characters from the series.

I loved the Rock Harbor series that Ms. Coble wrote previously, so I was super excited to return there in this series. This series focuses on Annie Pederson. Annie had a traumatic childhood and that continued into adulthood. Her circumstances led her to become a law enforcement ranger. After discovering a dead body, she seeks to figure out what happened. Besides the suspense, the book has a romantic aspect as well. As usual, this book is a nail-biting page turner. Once you start this book, you will want to continue to read until you finish it. I love how her books have you guessing and trying to figure out what will occur. There are always several plot twists that will leave readers guessing what will happen next. I highly recommend this book and know you will not be disappointed! I can not wait to read the next book in this series!
***I was given a free electronic copy of this book from the publisher for an honest review. This is my honest opinion. Even though I received this copy free, I have purchased her books before.

4.5 stars

Rock Harbor has a special place in a lot of reader hearts, so I know I speak for all of us when I say how ecstatic I am to return to its shores in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. And while Annie Pederson is the star of this new series, fans will be pleased to know that we get to visit with Bree, Kade, Anu, and many other beloved Rock Harbor characters and the picturesque town they call home.

From the opening prologue, I was eager to learn more about Annie and the journey she had been on since the trauma she suffered at age nine. Not only was Annie injured and left for dead, her sister was also kidnapped right in front of her. That’s a heavy burden for any big sister to bear, but I loved the grit and courage that Coble gave to Annie as an adult, even in the face of the additional tragedies she’s endured in life. In fact, we meet her again as a recent single mom, a widow whose parents also died in the same boat explosion that killed her husband, and a law enforcement park ranger who also runs her family’s marina & resort. Any one of those things may have defeated even the strongest among us, but while Annie is honest about her struggles she also exhibits great strength.

The suspense in Edge of Dusk is the perfect amount of creepy paired with some heart-in-your-throat moments that make you forget to breathe. There are a few different elements in play during this intense race to catch a killer, including a possible connection to a newly-opened cold case and Annie’s first love. We also follow along with Annie’s ever-present search for what happened to her sister, an arc that I expect will continue to affect future books in this series. As the various pieces began to fall into place, I admit that one part took me by such surprise that I gasped out loud. I love being so immersed in a great suspense book that I don’t see something like that coming. It makes the reading experience all the more enjoyable.

Bottom Line: Edge of Dusk is another stellar romantic suspense from author Colleen Coble. The second-chance romance is sweet & swoony, Annie’s work is fascinating, and the suspense part of the story keeps the intensity level high. I am delighted that this is the first book in a new series, and I’m looking forward to more adventures to come, particularly for the handful of things that aren’t completely resolved at the end. The familiar setting feels like coming home, and it’s so fun to catch up with beloved characters and meet new faces, too. A definite must-read!

I liked Annie. She's just a woman trying her best to handle the basket of things life has handed her. Jon was a great male lead. He recognized where he had gone wrong with Annie and tried to do everything in his power.

Readers will be reminded that God doesn't waste the bad things that happen to us. Adversity makes us stronger when we turn to Him in our trials.

I received an advanced reader's copy from the publisher through NetGalley; a positive review was not required.

Annie Pederson has spent her life in Rock Harbor, a small town on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. When her parents and husband die in a tragic boating accident, Annie continues to run the resort and marina she inherited from her father while caring for her eight-year-old daughter Kylie and working as a law enforcement ranger.

Her busy life keeps her past from haunting her—most of the time. But when a body shows up in the freezing waters of Lake Superior, Annie can’t help but remember her past. Determined to solve the crime, she soon discovers someone wants her silenced. When her ex-fiancé, Jon Dustan, shows up, she longs to trust him—but some people in town seem to think he left town because he committed a crime.

What I Loved About This Book

Coble has mastered the art of romantic suspense, and Edge of Dusk showcases her talents. Readers can relate to the flawed heroine as she struggles with the choices she made in her past and the ramifications for her future. Those who love second-chance romances will love Jon and Annie’s story.

Edge of Dusk is the first book in veteran author Colleen Coble’s Annie Pederson novels, which will return the author to her Rock Harbor, MI, origins, including the presence of many characters from the past series. This is slated to be a trilogy.

Widow Annie Pederson has lost all but her young daughter and her family’s resort on the banks of Lake Superior. As a child, she lost her younger sister when Laura was kidnapped and never found. When she was just out of school she lost her love when Jon Dunstan left to study at Mayo Clinic. And just a couple of years ago she lost her parents and husband in a boating accident. Now she works for the forest service, runs the camping resort, and tries to fill all roles needed by her daughter, Kylie.

The return of Jon Dunstan to Rock Harbor with his ailing father to get their family cabin ready for sale seems to trigger a series of events that launches a new dramatic mystery reaching back 15 years and placing Annie in a maniacs crosshairs.

This is another hold on to your seat mystery by Ms. Coble. If you have read nothing she has written and are a mystery lover, my question is why? She has a way of making the hairs stand up on the reader’s neck and isn’t afraid of raising their heart rate. This is another good story, part of a new trilogy. I very much enjoyed this book and I look forward to next edition in the series. I do recommend it.

Edge of Dust takes us back to the well-loved town of Rock Harbor in the first novel in Colleen Coble's latest series. Like the rest of her novels, this one takes readers on a thrilling rollercoaster of emotions and suspense, and ends with a surprising twist!

Annie Pedersen's life changed forever the day her sister was kidnapped. Twenty-four years later, she still hasn't forgiven herself for being unable to save her. Now a widow and orphan after tragically losing her husband and parents in a boating accident, Annie is still searching for answers, while working as a law enforcement officer and raising her eight-year-old daughter, Kylie. It's just another long day at Tremolo Marina until Annie discovers a body floating in Lake Superior. To make matters just a wee bit more complicated, Jon Dustan has returned to town after breaking her heart nine years before. Oh, and he's long been considered a suspect in a now-cold case involving missing teenagers. As murders increase, it seems like Annie is somehow being targeted and more lives are at stake unless they can find who's behind it all.

Edge of Dust has it all: hair-raising suspense, a well-rounded plot, realistic characters, and lost love returned. Annie and Jon were perfect for each other, and as a mom who has daughters near her age, Kylie was hands-down my favourite character. I also really enjoyed the town of Rock Harbor and the close-knit community surrounding Annie's and Jon's families. Annie's relationship with her daughter was sweet to see. I stayed up far past my bedtime to finish this one! I was glued to every page and couldn't put it down until I'd finished it.

EDGE OF DUSK by COLLEEN COBLE is a romantic thriller which takes place in Rock Harbor and is the first novel in the Annie Pederson series..It will keep you on the edge of yuur seat as the author takes you on a roller coaster ride, with twists and turns, old secrets coming to light and nothing beiing as it seems.
Annie Pederson is a Law Enforcement Ranger who still feels guilty for the disappearance of her baby sister Sarah twenty four years ago. With a body floating in the lake, the corpses of two young girls from a cold case turning up in one of Annie’s cabins, and the arrival in Rock Harbor of her first love, Jon Dustan, who is a suspect in the girls’ murder, there is plenty of suspense.
It is a really exciting read, with great charaters and a good Christian message. I am looking forward to the next novel in the series.

Always enjoy going back to Rock Harbor.

I enjoyed this book but I also struggled with it.

Great characters to want to care about but it just left a bad taste in my mouth.

A little too much ahh I caught you, he saved the day in the worst storm in years kind of stuff.

I guess what I am trying to say is it wasn’t believable for me. It just doesn’t settle well.

I loved returning to Rock Harbor again with this book! Encountering characters from past stories from a different perspective was so fun!

Annie is a ranger officer who's priority is to care for her daughter, her town, and the guests who stay at her families campsite and lodge. // When a man from her past comes back to town, it brings up all sorts of feelings as well as unearths questions about why he left and the girls that went missing shortly before he did // with a old and new bodies found, the town and Annie's heart, are flipped upside down as she does her job to help find the culprit, but also have faith in the man she once loved

The first book in a series that I already love // Edge of Dusk is mystery with clean romance and likable characters // if you loved The Rock Harbor series with Bree, Samson and Kade, then you will love this book // ⭐⭐⭐ (3.5)

Edge of Dusk is the first of the Annie Pedersen series, and what an interesting suspense it is. Two teenage girls went missing nine years prior and Annie finds their decomposed bodies in an abandoned cabin on her property. Who on earth would do such a thing and why were they placed on her property? You will be holding on to your seat as you try to figure out who the killer is. Annie has taken time off from her ranger life and now she is being stalked and her life is threatened. This is because she is investigating a cold case murder. At the same time her ex fiancé Jon {who she still has feelings for} is back in town and under suspicion. As the killer closes in Jon must protect Annie at all costs. There are lots of twists and turns to keep you guessing and a surprise ending when it is revealed who the real killer is. I love Coble’s books, she is such a great writer.....Thanks to Bethany for an e-copy and I am glad to leave a review.

Colleen Coble has delivered another masterfully written story. The suspense keeps the reader guessing, flipping pages to get just one more answer. The characters keep you imbedded in the story, with a great mix of romance and realistic problems to deal with. Mixed together and you have a book that is impossible to put down until you reach the end. And what a way to end!
A greatly anticipated return to Rock Harbor is everything you can want. While brief interactions with old characters, this story brings a whole new host of characters to meet and get to know. Annie has spent her life in Rock Harbor and can't imagine living anywhere else. Even though it also holds the hardest event in her life, the kidnapping of her little sister when she was just 9 years old. But Annie pushed forward and made a life for herself. Now she is struggling again with a little girl to take care of and a marina left to her by her recently deceased parents. There is never enough time in the day for all the repairs needed, that all fit in around her first job and passion working as a law enforcement ranger. Just as Annie feels she is getting her footing under her, her first love returns to town. Jon is back for one reason, to get the family cabin repaired and on the market to sell. He has a thriving practice and no intention to leave the city. But returning to a town that helped shape the man he became, and to the woman he once loved, Jon is having trouble keeping his eye on the sale. At the time Jon left town there was also a mystery of the disappearance of 2 young women. Some tried to say Jon was involved but nothing was determined. Now the past is going to catch up with Annie and Jon. With bodies starting to pile, there is a dangerous person in the shadows trying to stop Annie from finding the truth. Jon will have to stay diligent and careful if he wants to keep her and her daughter safe. But this dis always easier to say than to do.
Colleen Coble has again mixed romance, suspense, and faith to provide a story that is impossible to put down until the last page. It's a stay up late, ignore the house story that pulls you in, gets the heart pounding, and keeps you guessing until the end. This book will start another journey to Rock Harbor that will be enjoyed well past the first read. Can't wait for the next book in this new series! I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Edge of Dusk
Annie Pederson #1
By Colleen Coble

Twenty-four years ago, Annie's little sister was stolen during the darkness of the night, and Annie was left for dead. Annie has never given up hope that she might find Sarah. But she has little hope that she'll ever be found alive.

Annie's work as a Law Enforcement Ranger has helped her in her search for answers, and now she needs to put those skills to work when her first love returns home to Rock Harbor, and a nearly ten-year-old, cold case heats up, casting doubts on Jon Dunstan. Annie doesn't think Jon is guilty of murder, but she knows just how shattered her heart was when he left.

As Annie and Jon search for clues to clear his name, it soon becomes clear that someone wants the past to stay buried, and they'll do anything to stop Annie while riling up old animosities against Jon.

Edge of Dusk is the first book in the Annie Pederson series, and, as with all of Colleen Coble's books, this is one you won't want to put down. Fans of Rock Harbor are in for a whole new set of long-held secrets. This is one town that won't be mistaken for a quiet, peaceful, nothing-ever-happens-here place. Nope, this is one place that you'll want to watch your back during your visit, because you never know who might be lurking in the shadows, watching your every move.

Now I was able to enjoy this book in both print and audio - both of which were good. I do like the narration provided by Talon David. The story is read in an engaging and attention-grabbing way without being too much. So whether you want to read or listen, this book will leave eagerly awaiting book two in this new series set amongst the beauty and intrigue that is Rock Harbor.

I was provided a copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion - all thoughts expressed are my own.

MY REVIEW: ★★★/5
As a long-time lover of Colleen Coble’s romantic suspense novels, I was excited to see her return with a new series set in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, along the shores of her fictional, small town of Rock Harbor. Several beloved characters from books past made an appearance in this novel and readers meet Annie Pederson, a single mom and law enforcement ranger who finds danger knocking at her doorstep.

HIGHLIGHTS:
-Small town, Great Lakes life
-Single mom with an outspoken daughter
-Murder and a mysterious disappearance
-Danger and heart-pounding suspense
-Second-chance romance
-The first book in a series

WHAT I LIKED:
Coble captured my attention immediately with this novel, in her signature way of creating a past story that leads to modern day suspense. This novel read easily and flowed well with points of mild intensity and enough intrigue to keep me entertained. I enjoyed the small town setting, hint of romance and the way several mysteries played out simultaneously.

ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS:
Despite the creative plot, early on in this story I discovered it to be quite predictable. There were times the chemistry between the two main characters fell flat for me and I didn’t find the character development I wished for. Upon beginning this story, I had not realized it was part of a series, so near the conclusion I was expecting a happily-ever-after or conclusion to one of the mysteries and that was glossed over. I later found out that there will be more books in this series featuring Annie and her story.

SUMMARY:
Overall, a good suspense read, especially if you keep in mind that this is part of series and have read Coble’s other series set in Rock Harbor. There’s a hint of romance and the story flows well. Be prepared for the ending to feel different than expected and be sure to look for answers in book two!

EDGE OF DUSK (An Annie Pederson Novel Book #1) by Colleen Coble is the start of a new suspense series featuring a female ranger with romantic and Christian elements. This book has some characters carried over from Ms. Coble’s other books set in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, but I did not feel as though I needed any back story or was missing anything.
Annie Penderson was only nine-year-old when she and her younger sister, Laura were attacked as children. Annie was stabbed and left for dead while Laura was kidnapped from the dock of their Upper Peninsula home and never found. Twenty-four years later, Annie is a LEO ranger who still feels guilty for not protecting her sister and continues to search for her, while also being a single mother after the boating accident which killed both her husband and her parents.
While maintaining on the side the Tremolo Resort and Marina her parents left her, Annie finds a dead floating by the docks. It is the body of a missing hiking/camper, and he is not the first in the area to go missing.
At the same time, Dr. Jon Dustan returns to the area to sell his family’s summer cabin after his father’s stroke. Jon was Annie first love, but after a fight that tore them apart and suspicions from long ago tying him to two missing girls, he left the area for college. Annie wants to protect her heart, but when the missing girls’ bodies are discovered in an old cabin on the resort lands, it throws the two together again in hopes of solving the mystery once and for all.
This book has a lot happening in multiple plot lines. Some questions are answered in this book and others are set up to be continued in future books in the series. I liked the multiple mysteries and trying to figure out if they were connected or not. I did not feel the ending of the missing hikers/campers case was believable especially when you discover who else was complicit in the cover-up. I am interested enough to continue with the series to discover other solutions to the unsolved mysteries though. The Christian elements were minimal. The romantic elements had a few problems for me. I do not like when a misunderstanding lasts for almost an entire story, when the two supposed grown-ups can sit down and discuss their feelings sooner. This made it difficult for me to really connect with Annie and Jon who appear to be carrying this series forward.
Overall, this was an OK start to this new series. It has a few problems for me, but I do want to continue reading to discover where the cliff-hanger to one of the many mysteries leads.

RATING: 3.5 out of 5 Stars (Rounded up to 4)
