Excellent. I might be slightly biased as I'm from Hawaii and have been a Patsy Mink fan-girl since childhood and going in to this already knowing so much about her and considering her one of my heroes, there's not much an author could go wrong with when writing about her life. Patsy Mink was a pioneer and an inspiration. The only heads up I would give is that this book is heavy on her political life, so if that's not your thing, this book might not be as interesting to you. There is a brief history of her childhood and some personal life details, but the main focus of the book is definitely her political accomplishments, which are many, and the many glass ceilings she shattered along the path of her career. If nothing else, please take some time to research Patsy Mink and how her life has shaped the landscape of equality for women in this country.
I enjoyed this book A LOT!! Patsy Takemoto Mink is someone I have always wanted to learn more about. She played a major role in Title IX and thats what originally drew me towards her. I loved the pictures sprinkled through out because they are snapshots in time where you can get a glimpse of her or the people she worked with. I honestly wish more nonfiction had pictures because they say so much.
Patsy Takemoto Mink was the first woman of color and the first Asian American woman elected to Congress. Fierce and Fearless is the first biography of this remarkable woman, who first won election to Congress in 1964 and went on to serve in the House for twenty-four years, her final term ending with her death in 2002.
Mink’s life is craftily chronicled by historian Judy Tzu-Chun Wu and Gwendolyn Mink, Patsy’s daughter, a successful political science scholar as well as first-hand witness to the multitude of political struggles that her mother had to overcome during her life. Fierce and Fearless offers fresh new insight into who Mink was, and the progressive principles that fueled her to fight for change. They follow the evolution of her politics throughout the years, including her advocacy for race, gender, and class equality and her work to promote peace and environmental justice.
Fierce and Fearless paints a vivid picture of how Patsy Takemoto Mink worked tirelessly, and against all odds, to change the future of American politics. This book fantastically celebrates both the life and the legacy of a fantastic woman, activist, and politician years ahead of her time. An enlightening portrayal of the life of a trailblazing icon.
In 1964, Patsy Mink, a Hawaiian of Japanese heritage, became the first Asian American woman and first woman of color to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. She defended Title IX of the Education Amendments, opposed the Vietnam War, and supported rights for both labor and women. This thoroughly researched biography is recommended for those interested in women’s history. Thanks to Netgalley and NYU Press for allowing me to review an advance copy of this book.
I have never heard of this woman before! This woman overcame great odds to be the first woman of color in Congress! Thus,, this biography is a must read for Women’s History Month!
