The is book 10 in this series, having not read the previous 9, I found that this was very easy to read as a stand alone and had no problem catching on to what was going on. I love cozy mysteries and when I saw the opportunity to read one of Maddie Day’s cozies, I was more than excited to read this one since I’ve followed Maddie Day for a very long time on Facebook.
The setting for this book is South Lick, Indiana in the southern part of the state. It’s main focal point seems to be Robbie’s Pans & Pancakes which seems to be the hub for the small town rumor. As one of the elderly residents is murdered at an outdoor event, Robbie puts her sleuthing hat on and starts to try and unravel why and who did it, Interesting about this case is the fact that it closely resembles that murder that occurred years before to Police Lieutenant Buck Bird’s mother that remains unsolved. With twists and turns this is an enjoyable story,
I love stories that revolve around small towns and the community within. It’s easy to feel as if you are part of the community while reading the story and I’m sure for those that have read all the books in this series makes you feel as if you are connecting with old friends.
Thank you to #netgalley and #kensingtonbooks for allowing me to read the ARC of this book. All opinions expressed above are my own and were not influenced by the publisher.
I received an advance copy of this book via NetGalley.
This 10th book in the Country Store Mystery series and I haven't read any of the previous 9, but I found it easy to slip into this world from page 1. This cozy series is set in South Lick, Indiana, and the setting feels grounded and full of detail. Robbie runs a country store with an accompanying restaurant--and does a fair share of sleuthing on the side. When at a fireworks show with her new husband, there's a murder nearby--an older woman from a nursing home, stabbed in the neck. As Robbie investigates, she finds out the murder resembles one from decades before.
This book is fun and the mystery has lots of nice twists and turns, even as it's awfully convenient that everyone happens to eat in Robbie's restaurant, including the investigating police. The cast of characters is pretty large; I have trouble keeping names straight, and that definitely had me confused at a few points as I read. Robbie is a fun, relatable character. She's 30, a hardworking woman (the text dwells often on the restaurant and antique-shopping, which I didn't mind one bit), and is considering having kids soon. I can't help but wonder how that will complicate her future mystery-solving endeavors!
I somehow missed the last book so there were a couple of surprises for me including Robbie's recent marriage to Abe. (Maddie day is auto-request for me, didn't even read the blurb.) There's also a new trans character and I appreciated how low key the character is mentioned as trans and the action goes on. I just read another cozy with a trans character that left me unhappy with how the main character was threatened by her, finds out she's trans and suddenly all is fine because since she's trans she's no threat to the main character's relationship with her boyfriend. What?!?
One of the things I like about this series is that the author keeps the storylines fresh even though so much takes place in Pans 'n Pancakes. Robbie does get out here and we learn a lot about new characters that help develop some already existing characters. This story is jam packed with information and character interaction...except for Abe.
Abe has always had a really small role. Now that he and Robbie were married, especially so briefly, I expected him to get more page time. He's basically at the beginning and disappears until the very end. While strange, it didn't detract from the story for me, since I'm used to it. It did make me wonder why the author bothered to have them marry though.
I received my copy from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
I really enjoyed this one! I've been binge reading this series and was so excited to get an arc of the newest one now that I'm caught up. It did not disappoint! Even at book 10, this series doesn't seem to be losing any steam. I really love the character of Robbie and the side characters like Buck, Adele, and Abe are great too! The mysteries are engaging and fun, but most of all, I just adore the setting! Every time I pick up one of these books, I feel like I'm sitting inside of Pans 'N Pancakes! I love feeling like I'm a part of this fictional little community. I highly recommend this series and I can't wait for book 11!
Batter Off Dead by Maddie Day is the tenth book in her Country Store Mystery series. This author has treated her readers to another entertaining cozy mystery. The storyline flows well, is complex and attention-getting. I really like the characters in this series. I feel like I could enjoy having them as friends. Can't wait to see what Robbie's next adventure will entail.
Robbie and her new husband Abe are enjoying a summer evening in the park watching the town fireworks display. The night comes to a tragic end when one of the elderly spectators is found murdered. Many questions arise when she finds out that the murdered woman was a friend of Police Lieutenant Buck Bird mother and that both women's murders are eerily similar. With too many suspects and no real leads Robbie worries that this will become just another cold case.
I have loved all the country store mystery books and this one is no exception. With wonderful characters and twists and turns I found it hard putting it down. Maddie Day is a must read for cozy mystery lovers.
This is #10 in this fun series featuring a small town country store. Thank you to the publisher and to Net Galley. My review opinion is my own.
This is a fun series to read with enjoyable charcters. Robbie is the store and restaurant owner that is popular and well liked business in South Lick Indiana. She is newly married and attending a town fireworks display in this next in series. When a murder occurs Robbie and her husband are involved as friends of the victim.
This was a good addition to this series. The small town, good charcters and sleuth were well defined . I recommend this series.
A Country Store Mystery #10
We are back in South Lick, Indiana at Pans ‘N Pancakes. Robbie sells both at her country store.
She and her new husband, Abe, are out with the entire town enjoying a nice summer evening with fireworks. Even the folks from the assisted living center are there including Buck’s dad, Roy, and his lady friend Vi. Even with his blindness Roy can still knit with the ladies and let his other senses wander.
When the fireworks end, Vi is found dead in her chair. Murdered with what looks like a knitting needle maybe. Buck’s father is devastated not just for Vi but for his own wife who was murdered long ago. The killer was never caught.
Robbie is going to have to run her business and solve a murder. And she is good at both. Snooping and feeding people is what she does best. But someone out there wants her to mind her own business. But we know she isn’t going to do that.
This is a favorite series of mine. The food descriptions are to die for. And the recipes are included!

Always enjoy a visit with Robbie Jordan to see what she ends up in next in this fabulous series. A read as enjoyable as the food described, filled with suspects, red herrings, and loveable characters.
Okay find me a reader who doesn't just love Robbie Jordan, her Pans 'N Pancakes in South Lick, Indiana and they more than likely haven't had the pleasure of reading Maddie Day's Country Store Mysteries. A most delicious cozy filled with red herrings, great characters and an awesome story plot. Another home run with the bases loaded!!! Thanks #netgalley and #Keningston for the eARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are mine.
I realized as I began to read this book that I've obviously read at least some of the previous books in the series. I did, dang it, miss the one where Robbie and Abe got married but, in the grand scheme of things, it didn't matter. This one stands alone nicely. It brings back characters I remembered and dived into an old mystery, who killed police chief Buck Bird's mother so many years ago. That mystery is brought painfully to the surface when another murder occurs in a frighteningly similar manner. Robbie, even as busy as she is as a new wife and popular eatery owner, is soon pulled into the mystery.
Even a threatening message that she is being watched and should back off doesn't detour her although, quite frankly, I don't think I'd have been merrily peddling about on my bicycle as frequently as she does given that sort of threat. Suspects and red herrings are numerous and glimpses of the past collide with the present it seems as if everyone's stress level has risen. True, Buck is still consistently hungry but, hey, some things never change. One of the things that hasn't changed is Robbie's empathy for others, even passing up chances to pursue leads when it might disturb potential witnesses. I recall having always liked Robbie as a character in this past books and this just confirmed my take on her. She might confront a killer face to face but upset a disabled child? No.
Bottom line, I liked Robbie and those about her. They are loyal. People of South Lick know and care about each other. They also look to Robbie to help solve crimes, which is both flattering and cumbersome to Robbie, I think. She's no super woman and shows fear as she hides behind closed doors and drawn curtains at one point but, in true Robbie fashion, goes to work as always the next day, even knowing a murderer may walk through her door as a customer. How will it all turn out? Will solving one crime solve another? You'll have to read the book to find out. I'm not telling but you'll enjoy the ride and all the tasty food described as you read.
Thanks to #NetGalley and #KensingtonBooks for re-introducing me to Robbie and her circle of friends. I enjoyed it and have made a note to look for future adventures.

Seems like I only catch up with this series on the even numbered books, but it wouldn't have mattered
if this was the first one I've read because anything important was skimmed in this one.
Newlyweds Robbie and Abe own and operate a country store named Pans 'n Pancakes and are tuned in to all the local goings-on. When an elder is found to be murdered during the holiday fireworks, it sets off a lot of investigations, including an unsolved one from the past.
Great characters and a cohesive mystery plot are the best assets. Add in the concerns and lingo of the characters which are classic small town everywhere, the problems of the small business owner who is the central character, and a lot of witticisms. Great but quick read!
I requested and received a free ebook copy from Kensington Books via NetGalley. Thank you!
I enjoyed this book. I like the characters and the mystery is interesting. I was surprised by who the killer is. #BatterOffDead #NetGalley
Even this far into the series (10th book) I enjoyed this mystery. Read it after you eat however, or, like me, you'll be running to the refrigeration sure to the delicious recipes.
Thank you NetGalley for the advance read
I enjoyed this 10th installment in Country Store mystery, and while I did enjoy this one, to me it feels like the series has ran it course. The writing and the mystery are still good but I think it’s going to be hard to keep creating different mysteries because of the small town setting.
Batter Off Dead is the tenth installment in the A Country Store Mystery series set in South Lick, Indiana and featuring Robbie Jordan, owner of Pans 'n Pancakes. Newlyweds Robbie and Abe are gathered with friends to watch the weekly Friday night fireworks including Police Lieutenant Buck Bird. Buck invites Robbie to walk over and meet his father Grant and the other residents of the Jupiter Springs Assisted Living Center. Robbie is delighted to meet Grant and quickly realizes the older gentleman has a soft spot for his neighbor Vi Perkell. Sadly, the fireworks come to an end with Vi dead in her lawn chair.
Robbie is drawn into the murder investigation, which seems to be related to the cold case murder of Buck's mother many years ago. As she digs deeper into both murders alongside Detective Oscar Thompson, Robbie discovers that the common thread seems to center around a decades old crafting group - Stitch and Bitch.
An enjoyable afternoon read with the return of series regulars and delicious sounding recipes, that culminates in the resolution of two murders. The only thing questionable thing for me is how after all of these years living in South Lick, has Robbie never met Buck's wife or even knew that his father lived in town since Buck spends what seems like many hours a day seated at "his" table in the restaurant. I also have a slight problem with the way that Buck talks - why is he the only one in town who seems to have a distinct Hoosier way of speaking?
I received an advanced copy of Batter Off Dead from NetGalley via Kensington Publishing. While not required to write a review I am happy to offer my honest opinion.
This is the tenth in the Country Store Mystery series written by Maddie Day. I always enjoy visiting Robbie, Buck and the gang in South Lick, Indiana. We learn much more about Buck and his family along with other older residents.
Abe is a great grounder for Robbie. It seems things are settling down in South Lick until Vi Perkell is murdered at a fireworks show. Ms. Day provides plenty of suspects, twists and turns, and caring characters.
I enjoyed the mystery and the ability to visit with recurring characters as if they were my friends.
I was given an advanced reader’s copy and these are my own opinions.
Robbie Jordan is one of my favorite characters, and I loved this addition to the series by Maddie Day.
In Batter Off Dead, Robbie is settling in to married life, and she's looking forward to a little alone time with her new hubby, Abe.
As Robbie and Abe settle in to watch the fireworks celebration in their little town of South Lick, it seems someone else has murder in mind.
Naturally, Robbie listens to her gut feeling and soon begins asking questions, which puts her directly in the path of the murderer.
I enjoyed meeting some new characters, like Buck Birds dad, Grant. I'm hoping that we will get to catch up with him in further books.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of this book.
I'm looking forward to recommending this book and the whole series to other readers.

This ARC was provided to me via Kindle by Kensington Books and #NetGalley for my honest opinion. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
An enjoyable cozy read. It wasn’t my favorite in the series, it was satisfying though.
This was an enjoyable read. It was not the best in the series but worth a rainy afternoon. I felt that there wasn't much surprise with the ending and was a bit let down at the conclusion.
