This 10th installment in the Country Store cozy series (one of my favorites) set in southern Indiana, is, once again, outstanding. This time, police lieutenant Buck Bird is front and center, as the murder of his father's friend at a fireworks display shows similarities to the murder of Buck's mother years earlier.
I absolutely love mysteries where the past plays a key role in the mystery and that's certainly true of this one.
I also love this cast of characters and really hope for many, many more books in this enjoyable series. Highly recommended!!
An interesting and clever cozy mystery. As a fan of southern Indiana, the location greatly appeals to me. I have thoroughly enjoyed many of the books in this charming series. I do think the Hoosier verbiage has worn thin. The improper grammar became annoying in this book. As a former Hoosier I hope I did not speak that colloquially.
Batter of Dead was a cute cozy story. I didn't care for the way Buck spoke, though, and this distracted me and pulled me out of the scenes at times because I would skim over these parts. I don't particularly appreciate when characters are given certain speech patterns that make reading difficult.
I like Maddie Day and will continue to read these books and this author.

Thank you #Netgalley for the advance reader copy of Batter Off Dead by Maddie Day in exchange for an honest review. Robbie, and new husband Abe, live in Southlick, Indiana. Robbie owns Pans 'N Pancakes, where she sells cookware and cooks up a mean breakfast. The town turns out for a fireworks display. Robbie meets up with Lieutenant Buck Bud, who takes her to meet his father, who lives in an assisted living place. While watching the fireworks, one of the seniors is stabbed to death with something long and sharp. This story was hard to put down. I love reading Maddie Day books. The recipes at the end sound delicious.
I've enjoyed some of the Country Store Mystery not all of them but most of them. This one falls into it's okay category not great, just okay. The plot was missing something at least it felt that way to me. Figuring out who didn't wasn't hard but it was a sprinkle of so much going on that it left some questions unanswered. When the female protagonist gets married and starts thinking about having kids it's time to call it a wrap. I've enjoyed this series by this author and started her other series now. Please give this one a GRAND Finale for Jordon and Abe and all of Salt Lick. I've been there since the beginning, I'll be there until the end
When a sweet senior citizen is murdered at a fireworks show in town, Robbie is on the case. Who would want to kill the older woman and why? That's exactly what Robbie intends to find out. It seems the more she digs, the more she finds out...including the possibility that the woman's murder could be linked to the murder of Buck's own mother over 30 years ago. Can Robbie help the police figure it out with becoming the killer's next victim? Robbie's sure hoping that's the case, but things don't always go as planned.
I love Maddie Day! Her series are all great and this one was the first of hers that I read...and I look forward to each and every new entry with the same excitement as I had when book two came out. She's a savvy storyteller who knows how to weave red herrings that keep you changing your mind with each and ever new clue and possible clue. Her stories never disappoint and I highly recommend all of her books. However, if this is your first one no worries, it reads perfectly fine as a standalone and you'll be adding the rest of the books to your list before you're even finished with this one.
Newlyweds...romance...love...friendship...a murder disrupts the lives of the characters in this cozy mystery. Curl up under a warm afghan, enjoy hot herbal tea and a delicious scone...an afternoon of reading...a quick fun read...the characters in this book are likable...guessing who did the deed...the murder...that is the intriguing part. Try this book. It is enjoyable...This talented author has given us a book that will please even the critique of the cozy mystery genre; This book was sent to me by Netgalley electronically for review..
When I think of cozy mysteries, I think of books just like this one, that gives all the feels, thrills and can satisfies just about every reader's heart. This is a perfect books to snuggle up with on any day.
Batter Off Dead by Maddie Day is a great culinary cozy mystery that is the tenth book in the amazing Country Store Mystery series. It is a perfect addition.
I have read all ten books and all of the additional novellas, and I still love this series.
As always, this takes place in South Lick, Indiana and along with the down home country feeling and backdrop, we also get to salivate to all of the amazing food that is cooked up at Robbie’s Pans ‘N Pancakes country store and restaurant. I love how despite things changing, despite a new murder/mystery some things still stay the same. The full character cast is charming, and at this point in the game, I feel as if I am a part of their extended family.
This is the first book that covers Robbie’s new day to day life being a married woman to the wonderful Abe. I enjoyed seeing everyone trying to settle in and find their respective place and footing after the adorable marriage from the last book.
Of course it can’t be that simple, and Robbie is roped into solving another murder…this time it being associated with Lieutenant Buck Bird’s father, Roy. This present-day murder ends up bringing up another murder in the past…that of Roy’s wife.
Can Robbie and her gang find the culprit, solve the crimes past and present, all the while avoiding a treacherous end themselves? I loved going along for the ride to find out.
I enjoyed the plot, the multi-layer mystery aspect, and I loved visiting the gang again. I definitely recommend to anyone that loves cozy mysteries, and anyone that is a fan of this amazing series. I hope it continues for a long time to come.
