Eira and Alvis are the Chosen Ones. Eira is the human vessel that holds a part of Luana’s soul, Goddess of the night, darkness, and winter. Alvis holds a part of Ray’s soul, God of the sun. As the two chosen they are destined to be married.

However, when Eira’s father is poisoned by his wife she must flee with Caderyn who happens to be Alvis’ brother. The brother that Eira tries so hard to not love. You can pretty much see where this is going and I think that is part of my issue.

Add in this is a retelling of Snow White and I just felt like it was more than a little predictable. There are some parts that are amazing and the world building the author did is amazing. I just wanted more but I couldn’t tell you.

In the end this book just wasn’t for me. Doesn’t mean that it isn’t for you. There isn’t any one thing that I can put my finger on and say this is why I do not like this book as much as I like others.

I really wanted to love this book because the synopsis to the story sounded very intriguing. However, the story seems more like a sequel because they already have an established backstory. Therefore, it was hard to follow along because it felt like I was reading the second installment of a series rather than the first. Still, I recommend this for fans of Sarah J. Mass!

This book isn't written very well. It's really disjointed, sometimes awkward, sometimes confusing. I'm 1/4 way through and I don't know much about anyone aside from the fact that Rose has a limp and acts like a spoiled brat and Eira is fucking Alvis but doesn't want to marry him because she is also a spoiled brat. Amelia is evil because plot. It's incredibly juvenile but with random more adult themes peppered throughout.

I wouldn't care if they all died. I found myself becoming progressively more irritated as I went. Oh, and it seems that a good portion of the positive reviews are from other authors who I assume are trading positive reviews or otherwise FOS because come the fuck on. This is not a 5-star read. Have some fucking self-respect.

Not enough time. Too many books.

This doesn’t happen to me very often but I struggled to finish this book. Not because it’s a lengthy read or wordy, just that I was sort of bored.

The big reason I wasn’t into this book was that it started off with the main couple already in love. They have an extensive backstory filled with angst and drama that we didn’t get to read, I really wanted to read that! The story sort of jumped right in and it prevented me from feeling like we got to know the characters or feel the connection between them.

This is an adult book but I was a bit confused as to whether it was or not until the one spicy scene around 50%(other scenes are alluded to).

Overall I was just looking for more intensity.

The Night’s Chosen had everything I look for in a New Adult fantasy.

Well written? ✔
Excellent world building? ✔
Well-rounded characters with flaws? ✔
Tension and drama? ✔
Steamy romance? ✔✔✔

I know that raving reviews can be less fun to read than ranting ones but guys, I really loved this book. It had the perfect amount of “Snow White” references, like the fair princess and evil stepmother, without being a complete rip off of the original. I would say there was even a tad bit of Frozen in there; mainly the relationship between sisters and some really cool (pun intended) ice magic. It had a romance that I’m now ✨obsessed✨ with and I’m honestly just obsessed with this world in general.

A fun, new, fantasy twist on the story of Snow White.

The characters while being a little bland where likeable, especially Cade (I’m in love with him). The world-building itself felt under-developed however I can’t wait to continue exploring it in future novels.

The little hints towards other fairy tales such as Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty and Little Red Riding Hood were a joyous addition.

The plot was a good slow/medium pace however the ending happened to feel rushed in the events, the buildup of the story just ending too quickly and easily.

Overal an enjoyable read

I don't think there was really anything wrong with this that I could pinpoint, but sadly, I ended up not enjoying it as much as I thought I would. The concept was quite intriguing, but it felt like not enough was explained clearly in the beginning, which got me off-balance in connecting with the writing for the rest of the story. I also never ended up caring for any of the characters.

Thank you to Netgalley and City Owl Press for allowing me an arc of this book.

The blurb promised a book that, one that ticked all my boxes, but sadly it failed to deliver. That was, in part, because the blurb is slightly misleading. For example she’s searched the kingdoms for another way to rule as queen someday while also choosing her own husband. felt more like she was sulking and burying her head in the sand regarding her impending nuptials.

There was something that felt very immature about the prose, as though it were meant for a teenage audience rather than the adult one it is being marketed as. The story also felt quite disjointed, lacking a feeling of cohesion; important events were rushed and lacking detail whilst other scenes appeared to be superfluous to the plot and resulted in a somewhat erratic pace.

With a show-not-tell style of writing, I had no emotional connection with the characters and thus was not engaged by the story. The main positive was that the world-building was woven through the story, so there were no frustrating info-dumps to wade through. The author also had some wonderful story ideas with the potential to be a great writer, for me they are not quite there yet.

***Starting off I wanted to say there is a MASSIVE TRIGGER WARNING that I am shocked and disappointed has not made it into any reviews so far: miscarriage and child loss. I wish I would have known this was coming in the book before I started reading, as it does go into a bit more detail than usual on the subject and was personally very difficult for me to read. It was a semi-major plot point and came up a few different times throughout the first half of the book, so I wanted to do my due diligence in passing this information along to future readers before I begin my review.***

“The night is an interesting time. There are those who fear it, for it is dark, many times cold, mysterious, a time for dark deeds, and strange creatures roam about. At least, strange to them. But they do not see what we do. The quietness, the beauty, elegance, and comfort. There’s something lovely about a quiet night with only the stars around you.”

___________________________

“The peacefulness of night was always what Eira loved about being dedicated to Luana…” As the night goddess Luana’s Chosen, Eira the princess of Cresin has been destined to become queen since birth. The only step left to be completed in her ascension to the throne is her marriage to Prince Alvis; the Chosen of Ray, the god of the day, from the kingdom of Oxare. As a long held tradition, the Chosen of Ray and the Chosen of Luana are betrothed and married in order to unite the kingdoms and symbolize the unending love between Luana and Ray themselves. Having avoided this union for 5 years, Eira has just returned from a pilgrimage to begin the marriage celebrations at the annual Moon Festival. Her father, however, falls ill during the celebrations and soon lies in a coma at the crossroads of death and life. Eira and her sister Rose soon discover he has been poisoned by his wife: their stepmother Queen Amelia. After a failed attempt to remove her from the throne, Rose is captured and Eira flees the castle with her betrothed’s younger brother Caderyn who she had a romantic relationship with in the past. What follows is an epic journey of equal parts recovery of the items needed to wake the king, and self discovery for Eira who is still unsure of her future and who/what she is truly destined to be.

My biggest struggle with this book was that there was almost TOO much going on. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the aspects involved…the thick Snow White tie-ins were fantastic with poison and apple references, magic mirrors, an evil stepmother/queen, and even a dwarf appearance, but then there was the addition of an adventure, magical powers, shifters, quest to save a loved one in addition to rescuing a kingdom, a dragon, and a brief dip into Beauty and the Beast lore with a brief stint of Eira being held prisoner in a magic castle. This resulted in so much side story that it ended up making the plot itself (as well as some of the key characters) feel rushed and very glossed over in some areas. There were also some things that just didn’t make sense to me: the personality of Eira and Rose’s dad the king (unless he was supposed to be some form of comedic relief I couldn’t help but find his dialog just plain laughable), Eira having ice powers (I understand the reference to the dark and the cold but it came off feeling very Elsa-esque which threw off the Snow White vibe for me), and other slightly random details that honestly didn’t quite fit the storyline (water powers in a kingdom far away from the sea, and a random bear shifter being two of the main things). I would have rather had half the number of storylines with the opportunity to dive deeper and bring more rich fullness to the story as opposed to so many different “tropes” packed into one book.

What the book did well, however, it did WELL!! The chemistry, spice, and slow burn between Eira and Cadeyrn was spot on, the relationship between Eira and her grandmother was beautiful and made me emotional missing my own grandmother, and the true stories of Luana and her “chosen” were honestly the crown jewel of the entire book. I wish the book would have capitalized on more of these types of things and less on trying to cover so many fantasy staples at once.

Overall it was solid as far as fairytale adaptations go. I was personally disappointed in the ending…being a fairytale retelling you’d expect a fairytale related ending, but without any spoilers you did not get one here and it left me a hair disappointed. But if you love the classics and appreciate a new adult take on them this is absolutely worth your time.

Thank you so much to NetGalley, the author, and City Owl Press for sending me a copy of this book for free in exchange for my honest review!

This was such a great fairytale retelling. I was captivated from the first page until the end. This was a fantastic debut! I really enjoyed the world building and the magical system.

A retelling of Snow White, The Nights Chosen follows Eira, whos been blessed by the goddess Luana, on her journey to find a chalice that can heal her father who's been poisoned by her step mother. Not only is she after the chalice, but she also has to avoid her step mothers attacks. She discovers more than just the chalice along the way though.

The cover for this is lovely. I give the book 3.5 stars. The story was interesting, I loved that it's a retelling with plenty of it's own twists and adventures. It just felt kind of flat to me.

The magic system and history of the goddess was intriguing and the magic itself seemed beautiful and powerful, I just felt there could've been some improvement in the writing style and some of the characters. I enjoyed the characters though. They all have great potential and I wish that could've been seen more.

I did enjoy the story, just not as much as I thought I would. Still, if you enjoy a good retelling with a decent bit of romance and spice and interesting magic and lore, I'd say try it out!

Thank you NetGalley and Victory Editing (as well as City Owl Press) for the chance to read this arc in exchange for an honest review.

'A Night's Chosen' is a fun fairy tale retelling fantasy romance. I really enjoyed this author's debut novel which is a Snow White retelling. It contained rich world building that wasn't over complicated or bogged down and the writing felt lyrical but not over flowery. There were references to fairy tales and mythology which worked in this setting in a unique way. The characters and their arcs had me hooked and I loved the romance which had the right amount of pining, angst and steam. The villain was also more than one dimensional and had a unique twist. I really look forward to the next book in the series.

Eira is the Chosen One, the human vessel said to hold a part of Luana’s soul, Goddess of the night, darkness and winter. Alvis is the other Chosen One, holding a part of Ray’s soul, God of the sun. Being the two Chosen Ones, they were always meant and expected to end up together. Them being heirs to their respective thrones puts even more pressure on them to fulfill their destiny and get married. We Eira’s father is poisoned by his wife, Eira must flee with Alvis’s brother, Caderyn, the one Eira tries to keep in the friendzone, the one she can’t seem to forget, the one she can’t stop loving even though she is bethroted to Alvis (we all know what's going to happen here...).

This is a Snow White retelling, with a mythological twist that reminded me a little of the Red Winter series with the whole human vessel meant to hold a part of a god’s soul. But the similarities end there.

The writing is not bad, but the dialogues were not the best. They felt choppy and simplistic, and they did not help me know the characters better or care for them. Their conversations felt shallow and pointless or awkward most of the time.

The story does not always flow seamlessly. Some parts felt rushed, others felt pointless, ans there are also some typos that did not help with the flowing of the story. It’s also a case of telling and not showing. The elements for a great tale are there : magic, mythology, faes, sword fights and romance, but everything feels like it was quickly put up together without much thought about the depth of the character or the complexity of the plot.

The characters are bland, uni-dimentional, shallow and boring. While I did not hate or despise them, I did not care about any of them. The romance part was SO predictable, and lacked depths and feelings., I felt no tension or connection between the character whatsoever, I only knew it was there because I was told it was there (all tell, no show).

I like that there are fewer sexual restrictions and hang ups in this world the author created, which was refreshing, but the world-building as a whole could use improvement. There was no info-dump at least, but it took me a while to really get a good idea of the history, the land and even the different species living together on the land.

Worldbuilding - the writing style of this book is so beautiful and immersive. I can't get enough of how magical the world is and how beautiful the characters are.
Family - Family is a big emphasis in this book which I wasn't ready for for a dark retelling of Snow White. This book is so unique that you cannot even tell that it is a retelling and can standalone as a really good fantasy, romance book.
Fantasy- THE FANTASY ELEMENTS OF THIS BOOK IS SO SUBTLE. It's just dropped on you and you have to accept it to accept the beauty of this book.
Plot - I thoroughly enjoyed this story. You can't help but root for Eira and her journey. She's such an independent girl
Romance - not what I expected? It's the stereotypical I'm in love with the other dude but I'm engaged kinda story but Cadeyrn is SO swoon worthy and so supportive it hurts.

I REALLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK. SUCH A GOOD FIX FOR FANTASY AND ROMANCE. MY HEART IS LEAPING.
