Not quite sure where these 4 star reviews are Coming from. I feel like I read a different book. I finished but almost didn't.
Nyx is a necromancer training among reapers who dispise her family and all of what they are. Erebus is both and none living in another world but travels to where Nyx is on his own missions which happen to be the same when they first meet. Mysterious boy gets his ass handed to him by a not so mysterious girl that takes what is most precious to him. A locket.
Here is where the story turns into a hot mess. The entire time I felt like I was missing important information. Everything was rushed. As if chunks were taken out to make the book shorter.
One chapter you're reading about a killer raven stalking Nyx family. 3 pages later the almighty Reaper king wants revenge. Another chapter later everyone is fighting each other in this other world and sudden Nyx and Erebus are wanted by both sides for different purposes. That's about it. Let me bot even get started with the cliffhanger ending. I definitely will NOT be reading book 2 if there is one. If you're looking for a very quick read with little importance on story development and have quick answers have at it. Otherwise don't bother.
This was a book. It had words. The words went together to fork sentences. Those sentences made paragraphs. Eventually it was a story.
I thought that the title and cover looked interesting, and I wasn't wrong. It is like a dark fantasy with hints of magical realism, YA fantasy and more.
The world building was fantastic! I could almost feel the thrill of the hunt and tingle of magic as we are pulled into this darkly interesting world. It could also become a favorite of mine if explored a bit more. Especially, with how well defined the author made the division between reapers and necromancers and all the other dark and ghastly creatures in the story. The characters were a little less mind boggling, but still interesting. I could and did find myself liking them fairly well. The adventure that Nyx (a strong girl from a necromancer family living in a world of reapers) and Erebus ( a ghostly hunter) takes you on is all together dark, scary, thrilling, and magically imaginative.
I would love to see and read more from this world and characters. Thank you to NetGalley for a copy of this book to review.
I have received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Relic and Ruin was one of those books that I devoured in one sitting with zero regrets. Though I'm writing my review ten thousand years later, I'll admit that I dove back into this just to see if I remembered what actually went down. I mean, I first read this book a year ago and totally dropped the ball on writing the actual review. Oops?
Anyways, I redeemed myself completely because I still enjoyed the heck out of this. I will admit that I'm little sad and disappointed there's no sequel available yet. Back to the book, in this you will meet two relics - Nyx (the Banshee) and Erebus (the Wraith). They don't know what they are until they are basically kidnapped by some interesting characters. There's also the young God, Bellum, who wants to kill them to bring back his dad.
I honestly really enjoyed getting to know each and every character throughout the book. My heart broke when certain characters died or were in a way tortured by certain people. I also really liked how everyone's power was super unique to them. Sure, we had like five hundred necromancers and/or reapers, but they also had their own power that was super cool.
For example, Lilith's power during the zombie battle while she was somewhere else was so freaking cool! Then there's Nyx and her Banshee power that basically everyone underestimated. Other than that, we also get some romance, but I honestly wanted more than we got. Which is why I really want the next book to become available, so I can watch that bloom into something beautiful.
In the end, I really enjoyed this book the first (and second) time around. Definitely need the sequel to fall into my lap soon.
4/5 Stars
I had a fantastic time reading this book. The writing just pulled me in and wouldn't let go. We had a great combination of POV's and characters. I really enjoyed the pacing, It moved with purpose. I do think the relationships could use some work and a bit more checmistry but overall this book has my attention and I will be reading further works.
First time reading from this author. The book have multiple POV. It has a lot of characters that I would get lost. YA Fantasy.
Thank you Wendii McIver, Wattpad Books, and Netgalley for this e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
As soon as I read in the summary, “Necromancers and Reapers” I was immediately intrigued and was super excited when I was approved for this book. Nyx was one of my favourite characters because she’s smart and head-strong. The world-building was phenomenal because it’s memorable and detailed; I had a lot of fun visualizing what was happening throughout the book. It was hard to put down the book because it was thrilling and action packed. While I loved the pacing for the majority of the book, about three-quarters through the book, I was starting to lose interest because it was slow, and I was starting to lose interest. However, at this point I was determined to finish the book and find out what happens. Another thing I wasn’t a huge fan of was all the side characters because it was hard to keep track of who’s who. Maybe the author could include a character guide for the following book; Maybe she could include a creature guide too.
When I saw the cover for this book and then read the summary, it sounded interesting to me, like something I would likely enjoy, and so I put the request in. I hadn’t even noticed that the publisher for this book was Wattpad books, not until I finally got around to reading it while on my most recent cabin getaway with my husband. I make this statement because it is relevant to some of my thoughts on the book.
This makes me think back to my early days of writing, when the place to write and post was fictionpress[dot]com and fanfiction[dot]net. Now it seems like WordPress has taken over that position, where writers can post up stories chapter by chapter, and some can even publish/print finished books. But there is a style to writing and releasing books a chapter at a time, and a specific way to pace the tale. That was very clear while reading Relic and Ruin. Most chapters were shorter, and they were quick, easy to read, and often tried to leave off on a cliffhanger, even if only a small one.
While the story and the pacing was quick, I found myself struggling to get through the second half of the story. It wasn’t holding my interest well enough and while the chapters were short, it felt like they were drawing the story out longer than was necessary. And in many ways the story beats and reveals felt a bit too predictable.
Plus there were times when the story would jump forward days or weeks or months, skipping over the times when the Banshee and the Wraith were engaged in training, learning more about their powers and harnessing them. I would have loved to have seen some of the lessons and gotten to learn more about their respective skills and abilities.
That’s not to say that the tale woven through these pages wasn’t a good one. It was compelling in its own way, and I can see why people would be intrigued by it, but it just didn’t grip me that much. Still, I might consider picking up the sequel anyway, to see if the story of Erebus and Nyx manages to grab my attention now that the lore of the world has been established.
I couldn't connect with the story, there wasn't anything that surprised me or caught my attention besides the names of some characters. The origin story at the beginning was interesting, but then I lost interest quickly due to the style and even some dialogues.
it was fun but soooo slow! i was bored for a good 50% of the book! the characters were fun, i liked them but the pacing is what made me struggle to finish this book.
When I saw all of my Goodreads friends reading this and handing it five star reviews like it was nothing, I went in expecting this to be brilliant. However, this book just didn’t click for me like that. This feels like something you would find on Wattpad rather than a Barnes & Noble. Needs some editing and reworking.
ive tried reading this book twice now and ive accepted that its just not for me. i think the characters are bland and there is just so many people in the cast and i cant keep up with the plot because so much is happening at once writtten in a bland format that i just cant get into. I think id say this could be enjoyable its just definitely not for me.
This was a really interesting read, completely unlike what I was expecting, but in a positive way. Side note, I love the cover but I feel it is a little misleading and the synopsis is not even a little bit helpful as to what the story is actually about. I am going to keep details about the book vague so as not to spoil anything, but I recommend this story for anyone who likes epic battles, star crossed loved, death and resurrection, prophecies in motion that can't be predicted, an extensive cast of characters that at times are hard to keep track of, magic of all kinds, lots of supernatural creatures, and a random mix of fairy tale retellings- all smooshed together to create a very unique story that I would love to read the next one of. Content wise, there was a lot of death and murdering going on but no sex or curding so this could easily be upper YA level reading. Keep in mind this is listed as the first in a series and it ended on a huge cliffhanger so beware you will have a desperate need for a second book.
The one downside I saw with the book was a possible need for editing. I started reading an early draft but then ended up picking up the finished copy since the draft was hard to read. Well, the finished copy was not a lot better, it skipped around A LOT between all the characters, with no warning or transition so I was confused at times who was doing/saying what. I liked the plot and all the moving pieces but I think this could benefit from further editing to make it an easier read.
Terrifying characters, raw emotion and necromancy, this book is is a beautifully written treat that fans of paranormal books will devour
Unfortunately this book was not for me, it was a bit slower than I would like and it just didn't hold my attention. I am sure other people will love it!
Loved loved this book. Dark and atmospheric whole lending a new voice to the legends. I wish more people would talk about Relic and Fine but I think between the smashing characters and great plot, it will become a cult classic
Haven't been able to read it. I think it has a great premise but it did not reach the level I want to pick it up.
***Thank you to NetGalley and to the publisher for providing me with an electronic copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.***
I absolutely ate this book up! Before reading, I was not expecting the Romeo and Juliet vibes that emanated from this tale of reapers and necromancers. I really enjoyed the read and the chapters were all named after different phobias which, in my opinion, kept me wanting to continue reading more than I already did. I’m so sad that I’ve already finished this book. I need more Nyx and I need more Erebus, now! However, I’m unsure if there is room for a sequel with the ending that it had. Thank you so much to NetGalley and Wendii McIver for sending me an eArc copy of this book.
When I saw this book on NetGalley, the title and book art were the pulling force in requesting this book. I 100% didn't expect to be so fully invested in this book that I forgot about sleeping and dropped right into this well-written fantasy.
Necromancers and Reapers control the world, so lots of wonderful dark descriptions and lore.
Nyx (FMC), born a Necromancer but lives and trains as a Reaper - a big family full of magic and strength. I loved the dynamic they held just as I enjoyed the closeness and banter between Erebus and his friends.
I loved the element of mystery - who was Erebus and where did he come from? I loved learning about his past and what it meant for the development of the story.
I needed to point out that I got a kick out of every chapter starting with the name of a phobia and the meaning of said phobia with it - I started to look forward to these when a chapter would come to an end.
I genuinely loved this book and can't wait for future parts of this book to be released.
