It’s always nerve-racking when you begin the second book in the series when you really liked the first one. Thus, I was thrilled when this follow-up in the “Mary” series actually surpassed my enjoyment of the first! Maybe because I’m an English teacher, and love teaching Frankenstein, and maybe because I was already familiar with most of the characters in this story (as compared to the first, My Contrary Mary, which piqued my interest to learn more about those characters) but this was a truly satisfying follow-up. There is just enough romance, just enough humor, just enough “fantasy,” and just enough pop-culture references to make the story appeal to a wide range of readers and it will definitely be a hit among my middle and high school girls. Once again, I’m thrilled that the main characters are strong, smart, and independent young women who don’t need rescuing from men. I can’t wait for the next in the series! Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for an ALC in exchange for my honest opinion.
I had a lot of fun with this one! I really liked Ada and Mary together and I was really intrigued by their creation. It felt a bit repetitive at the end and I feel like it wrapped up quickly but also took forever to at the same time, it seemed like many details were unnecessary and weren't the loose ends I was hoping for the answers too. But this didn't ruin the book for me, I felt really connected to the characters so that pulled me through to the end.
I genuinely hope that these three literary geniuses never stop writing books! I LOVE the way they twist history with humor and fantasy. It is always magical! I thought this retelling of Frankenstein was executed well and as always, the pop references were fantastic! The characters were likable, and the villians were detestable! The only thing I would have changed was the pacing; I wanted a bit more action and progression with the story. I would still highly recommend this book though!
Honestly wasn't very interested in this book beyond that I've loved the Lady Janie's books! This was a fantastic surprise! All little retelling cues inside one story, twists, and turns in the plot kept me engaged. I loved the believable relationships with perfect amounts of embarrassing funny moments.
Sci-fi meets fantasy meets a pinch of stuff that probably happened.
If you like The Great on Hulu or Bridgerton on Netflix but wish they weren't so filthy (I just called myself out here), this one is for you!
I really enjoyed myself even though I'm really not a sci fi fan! I wouldn't have read this but listening to it made the sciency parts more palatable.
Thank you NetGalley and publishers for the ARC!
This book was incredible! I've read the other books these authors have all cowritten and My Imaginary Mary is no exception to how brilliant these three are together. I thought the magic was inventive and different, I laughed and didn't realize how much I wanted to slap Percy Shelley.
I completely understand that I got an auto recorded voice, and I write this for any publisher/author out there: please stick with the audiobook narrators. I say this with a 100% understanding that what I got was not the final product, but I also say that I sincerely hope this will not be the future of audiobook narrating.
