This one was.. strange. I felt confused at times. I mean it wasnt bad. I dont think I'm a fan of questing-type stories. Although, it showed promise.
I stopped reading at 75%(dnf) 2.5
Well this was wonderfully weird and magical!
I was utterly fascinated by the lore, culture and mythology of this story inspired from Bulgaria. It has gorgeous illustrations the perfectly compliment the story. A new indie fairy tale story. You can tell this story has a lot of heart put into it by the author.
It is very detailed-orientated and its lyrical prose got a bit confusing at times and made the story seem slow for a fantasy read. It made me disengage with the story and characters sometimes. But I think this has a lot of promise and will capture a lot of people's hearts.
Thank you to NetGalley for this eARC in exchange for and honest review.
This wasn't for me, and I don't think most of it was the book's fault. I'm personally not a huge fan of questing-type stories with this style, which I didn't realize this would be. There's also a lot of lore and characters that I found confusing and difficult to keep track of everything. I think people that enjoy more detailed fantasy and world-building may enjoy this, but it wasn't my style.
Thanks, Netgalley and publisher for the opportunity to read and review!
First of all to mention it's a pleasure to review and arc from the author who's born and raised in my beautiful country - Bulgaria. One star goes straight for that reason, because I want this book translated and published in Bulgarian. I know how rich, colorful and beautiful our language is and it'll be a real pleasure reading it in Bulgarian.
The second star goes for the amazing, colored illustrations. The art style is beautiful and I wished the drawings were more. But even these we had are incredible. Congratulations to the artist - Boryana Netsova! Incredible work!
I'm used to reading more adult fantasy books, but even if this one lacks blood, gore and violence that doesn't mean it's worth less. On the contrary. It's amazing when you see characters winning battles using their intelligence, knowledge and sharp minds..
And I'm even more in love with the mythology and cultural aspects that the author incorporates into the setting and building of the fantasy world, because they're part of our rich Bulgarian heritage and it's wonderful that the world can now be introduced to it! We have our own amazing mythical beings that can fascinate every reader just as much as the typical dragons and elves, as well as old and vast history that can inspire epic fairytales.
The main character Fleex is an amazing protag. I love his design. His journey is every human's journey through life - facing truths, lies, desperation and hope. His choices are born from dilemmas we alone face as well - to surrender for a greater cause or still fight for what you believe in. To find the courage and faith within you when everything depends on your actions and decisions.
It was an amazing read, which warmed my heart not only because of the intriguing story, but because all the way through reading I felt warm and emotional. As if Fleex himself is part of my family and his world are part of mine. Long after I finish reading I felt that I could go through the door and transport into his world to share his adventures and meet all amazing characters and creatures.
Can't wait tp read more form the author!
