Summer Island is a cute summer read. It covered a ton of different topics from breakups to water reclamation which I find interesting. I found myself googling milk jugs water filtration system just to get an idea of how that looked, but no such luck on my end. I was expecting more romance and got a little bit. Im glad the ending doesn’t feel rushed like some books tend to feel. I was very happy with it!
When Phoebe loses her job and her fiancée on the same day, she doesn’t expect her mom to tell her that her dad left her when she calls to be comforted… but this is what happens. Phoebe and her mom, Ruth decide to get away for the weekend to Summer Island, a New England island, where her Grandma Alice lives. Their weekend long trip extends as Phoebe and Ruth find out more about themselves and what they want on Summer Island. In my opinion this was a solid summer time read- it took a little time for me to get into, but once I was about a third of the way in I was wanting to find out what happened to each of the very likeable characters in this book.
Thank you Netgalley and the Publisher for my ARC in exchange for my honest review. This was an enjoyable book.
This was a fairly typical summer women's fiction story about mothers and daughters, divorce, career crisis and the power of small island communities. I found it a little slow to start but did enjoy the characters once I got into the story. Recommended for fans of Hallmark movies and authors like Mary Kay Andrews, Debbie Macomber or Sarah Morgan. Much thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance review copy. This one wasn't for me but if you're looking for light and fluffy this might be up your alley.
✨Book Review✨
Book: Summer Island
Author: Shelly Noble
Genre: Contemporary/Women’s Fiction
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
This book is classified as romance but there is very little romance. Read this book if you like small beach towns, family relationships and dealing with turmoil, multiple characters.
Phoebe loses her job and fiancé on the same day all the while her mother Ruth is going through a separation after 38 years of marriage. They pack up and go to Granna (Alice) beach house to cope and try to figure out their next steps in life. This story deals with self-discovery, healing from death of a loved one, life lessons, and individual journeys.
The book was pretty slow paced and IMO ended too abruptly. I wanted to connect with the characters more, but is a good light summer read. Definitely makes me want to visit the east coast small beach towns.
Thank you to NetGalley, HarperCollins, and Avon Books for an advanced copy of this ARC in exchange for my honest review. Book is out now!
First, this cover is adorable! This was a good little beach read that tugs at the heart strings. I enjoyed it.
This was your typical romance story, girl starting over meets the boy next door... let's see where it goes.
It was a cute story, I didn't really get bored, but I wasn't overly anxious to find out what was going to happen or anything. Really, it's a pretty forgettable story. I liked the family intereactions between Phoebe, her Mom, her Grandma and her Great Aunt, and the friendship between the neighbors was sweet too. But there wasn't a whole lot of plot, or character, development. I give it a three because I didn't dislike it, but it's definitely a low three.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for letting me read this ahead of its release - though it's well out by now. This book made my heart hurt in a good way!
As someone who is close with their mother but share a complicated past as well as different views on life, this one really hit home. This is definitely a beach read that will make you want to pack up your problems for a bit and head to an island and figure out your next steps.
As the world changes and moves on, lives and experiences are different across different generations. They all come together for laughs and to help each other through the changes they face and I found it an engaging and satisfying read. Pack it in your tote bag before heading to the water!
Phoebe has her world suddenly turn upside down. She goes to her parents for support and quickly finds out that her mom also has her life in shambles. So they decide to go to a place that felt like home, a place where they can plan their next steps, or maybe hide from life? And what better place to do a life retrospective and prospective analysis that at grandmas house, on the beach you grew up with snickerdoodles.
.
Add an old friend neighbor recently-ish widowed who has lost his will for anything in life. Who's relationship with his son taking care of him for the summer could not be more estranged.
.
Also to their surprise, always cheery great auntie is also visiting (maybe working out somethings about life too?).
.
This was a beautiful heartwarming story filled with so many life reflections about self discovery. I enjoying watching all the characters grow through the turmoils that life sometimes brings. The dynamic between these generation of women was just endearing and motivating. And even though romance wasn't the center of the story there was so much LOVE! Love for family, friends, life and dreams. New and forgotten. And there was a tiney tiny bit of romance too.😊

I am so grateful to have received a copy of this book from NetGalley and Avon. I found it easy to imagine the vibe of the family house, as well as the relationships and community between the Adams and the Harkens. I also thought that the plotline about Ty's career was interesting. That being said, this book had weaknesses that I couldn't ignore. The dialogue was stilted, and certain storylines were very underdeveloped, ie. Phoebe's relationship with her father. I loved the New England setting, but I'm not sure it ever mentioned where exactly Summer Island is? I couldn't tell if it was in Maine, or off the Massachusett's coast. Perhaps we were meant to suspend belief and just imagine it as generally New England, but as a Boston native I was thrown off. The overall story had potential, but the execution could have been much tighter. I'm sorry to say I won't be recommending this one.
I really enjoyed this title. It's a fun, quick read and I liked the characters. This would make a great beach read or something you would read on vacation.
What sets a Shelley Noble beach read apart from so many other beach reads? Noble doesn’t write fluff. She writes thought-provoking plots about real people dealing with real-life and real-world issues. Even though they take place in beach communities, her books will stay with you long after your own summer beach vacation comes to an end. Summer Island, her latest, is no exception.
Summer Island is a very easy, but predictable read. It was a struggle to connect with anyone in this book. The plot feels like it was rushed.

I loved this book from start to finish. There were enough plot lines going on to keep it interesting. It is about three generations of women in one family and the trials and tribulations they go through. It is set by a beach on the east coast y Boston. You will laugh and cry along with these women. Excellent book, I recommend reading it.
Thank you to Harper Collins - Avon Books and Netgalley for an advanced reading copy of Summer Island. This review contains my own thoughts & opinions.
Summer Island is definitely more women's fiction with only a small amount of romance, but since I love both genres this totally worked for me. Phoebe and her mother, Ruth, both travel to visit Alice (Phoebe's grandma) on the island where they spent many summers growing up after some life-altering circumstances happen to them both. Aunt Vera (Alice's sister) is also there, along with next door neighbors - Lars and his adult son, Ty, who is also visiting for the summer.
During their weeks together, nearly all of the characters experience growth, changes, or becoming who they were meant to be all along. I enjoyed the story and recommend it for fans of Susan Mallery or Brenda Novak.
3.5 stars
Thank you, Netgalley, for the ARC of Summer Island by Shelley Noble.
Indeed this is a women's fiction book. The book, for me, is slow-paced and predictable. I love that it is about being there for the family.
I still will recommend this to anyone.
This was a book that set my heart a peace. A book where three different generations of women come together, each going through different times of their lives. Which as we get older that happens. We all go through different phases of our lives and it's through these experiences and sharing them that we're able to get past it/help each other. It's a good cozy beach read.
An enjoyable story about three generations of women and a summer that’s the turning point in most of their lives.
When Phoebe calls her mom to tell her that she’s lost her job and called off her engagement, she realizes her mother is dealing with something even worse: her husband (Phoebe’s father) recently left her after 35+ years of marriage. Neither Phoebe nor her mother Ruth know what’s next for them. Phoebe knows that she has to leave her apartment though and now she can’t go to her parents’ place. The two women load up the car and head out to stay with the family matriarch Alice.
Alice has a beach house that has always felt like home to everyone in the family. This explains why Alice is already hosting her own sister Vera. Vera seems to be going through something too but nobody knows what, they know it’s best to just let Vera talk when she’s ready.
Alice’s next door neighbor is Lars. Lars has been dealing with depression since his wife passed a year ago. His adult son Ty is staying with him, trying to take care of him but Lars is making it impossible. The ladies next door witness Lars’ unfair treatment towards Ty and they do their best to invite the men over, trying to help cheer up Lars and to support Ty.
During this time at the beach house, Phoebe and Ruth are both trying to figure out what’s next for them.
I found the characters to be likable and I loved the support the women in the family showed towards each other. I found talk of Ty’s job a little slow. But I enjoyed the story. I always love a beachy setting too.
I got to read an early ebook edition from NetGalley. Thanks!
A really enjoyable, multi generational book about life, love and the inevitable changes and choices that come to all of us.
This was very mediocre. It wasn't romantic or fun but rather pretty droll. Even the setting on beach wasn't described very well and none of the characters were very likeable. I would read something else at the beach but hope you have better luck!
Summer Island comes out next week on May 3, 2022, and you can purchase HERE.
Ruth has known it would come to this. She'd never had any doubt that she would tell all before the day got much older. But she hated it. She hated everyone knowing her marriage had failed after almost three decades of what she thought had been happy. Happy enough, anyway.
