When true-crime writer, Cassie Bowman reads about the story of Lore Rivera she cannot resist diving deeper into this story. Lore was married to two men at once, living a double life, until one fateful day, one husband ends up dead and the other in jail guilty of murder. Cassie has had to carry around secrets of her family for years and feels a strong connection to Lore and this story. To Cassie’s surprise, Lore agrees to be interviewed and the two form a close bond, exchanging secret stories over hours of telephone calls. As the actions of what actually happened to Lore’s husband develops, I was completely in on both of the women’s stories.
This family drama was a great read for me. I loved the true-crime aspect of it and the interviews that took place. It was fascinating to relive the early days of Lore’s affair as she falls in love with another man and betrays her husband and sons. Also seeing Cassie’s current life and how many secrets she is hiding from her fiancé and what actually happened with her dad all those years ago that keeps them estranged. Great book for those who love some family drama and domestics thrillers!
Unfortunately, I struggled with this book. I did not find Lore interesting and I was forcing myself to read. I think this could have been a good 50-75 pages shorter.
This was not a book for me.
True crime blogger Cassie Bowman discovers the story of Lore Rivera who secretly married Andre Russo in Mexico City when she already had a husband and two sons in El Paso. When the situation was discovered, the first husband, Fabian, went to prison for murdering the second husband.. Cassie interviews Lore with the intention of exploring what led Lore to juggling a double life. Chapters alternate between Cassie in the present and Lore both in the present and in the 1980s when her double life started and ended. The premise of uncovering what drove her to the double life that was impossible to sustain is interesting. However, the book is too long and slow moving. Many Spanish words and phrases are thrown into the text, which slowed the action even more for me with my limited knowledge of Spanish. It hardly seems possible that Lore could sustain the deception as long as she did. Cassie does uncover secrets that provide some twists at the end.
After the initial pages, I found myself not connecting with the story or characters, so I decided to pass on this book. Did not finish
Great book! The chapters were a little slow, but the overall story was great. Characters were wonderfully written. Recommended to my book club, and they enjoyed it!
Interesting story that kept my interest! Would recommend! 5 star review, Don’t miss this book! Great audiobook too.
I loved this book! It was so well written that it was hard to believe this was the author’s first novel! I can’t wait for her next one already! I loved the character development of Lore and Cassie. I felt so much empathy for Lore even with her questionable actions. The ending was one I did NOT see coming. I would definitely recommend this book! I received a free copy of this book from netgalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review.
This book was okay but had the potential to be so much better. It dragged a lot - it could have used a lot of tightening. And there was a lot of Spanish/Spanglish, which was very confusing and dragged me out of the story. I finished it but overall didn't enjoy it very much. 3 stars.
Read this if you like: Dual POV, multiple timelines, true crime, slow burns
In 1985 Lore Rivera worked as a banker in Texas, and had a family, a husband and twin boys. She soon has a huge secret. She is married to two men at once, until one hot day in 1986 when one of them found out and shot the other. A secret double life ended with a tragic murder. That's the story the world knows.
It's not the story that fascinates Cassie Bowman in 2017. Carrying the weight of her own family tragedy, true-crime writer Cassie wants to know more about the mysterious woman at the heart of it all, Lore. To her surprise, Cassie finds that Lore is willing to talk. To finally tell her heartbreaking story.
Wow. This is a fairly long book for me but very intriguing. I do believe it easily could have lost 100+ pages and I probably would have given it 5 stars. However, I did enjoy it. It just ended up being slow patches. The story is very creative. I wanted to know all about Lore and her family. The characters were well developed. I think this is a great debut. It was wrongfully marketed as a thriller. It's not. Keep that in mind. I will read more by this author. I recommend it!
Thank you so much to NetGalley, the author, and William Morrow for the gifted e-book! ❤️
I am not really sure how to classify this book. A thriller? Murder mystery? A romance? A family drama? Either way, I really enjoyed it. I think it was a unique book to the kind of murder mystery type books that I usually read. An unconventional woman, who just wants love and to be loved, regardless of the consequences. A woman willing to take up space and demand more, more, more.
It was a fun read and had me doing some serious page turning. I liked how it was occasionally quite sensual and romantic, and there were a lot of pieces to it and a lot of thought.
Recommended for those who like thrillers and mysteries but with a bit of a twist.
A very interesting novel and contains mystery but to me was not necessarily setup as the thriller that it feels like towards the end.
I enjoyed this book! If you have no knowledge of Spanish, it may be a bit of a challenge, because there is quite a bit of "Spanglish" and Spanish phrases. I taught pre-K to mostly Spanish speaking 4 & 5 year olds for 2 years, so I was able to figure out the words I didn't know, and even looked up a word or two, but it did slow me down at times. On the other hand, with the Spanish slowing me down some, I feel like I will remember this storyline for longer than other books that I read through faster. Great story overall!
I really liked this. I felt it could've been shorter and packed a bit more of a punch, but super enjoyable overall. Lore was fascinating and I liked how Katie explored the secret double life. Will definitely be reading more from Gutierrez.
I couldn’t get into this title I think the dark storyline didn’t connect with me as I thought it would. I would still recommend this title to true crime fans.
Lore is living a lie. Entangled in a double marriage, one husband her high school sweetheart, the other a charismatic lover she met through work. Living a double life however is a lot of work and trying to keep the secret is becoming harder and harder. When Lores’s husband Andre’s shows up in her hometown her secret is exposed and he ends up dead. Fabian is charged with Andre’s murder and Lore’s life is never the same. Years later a young blogger named Cassie feels Lore’s story could be the key to advancing her career, after reading an article on her. Cassie is determined to get Lore to finally tell the real story of how she ended up with two husbands and how Andre’s ended up dead. Lore finds Cassie intriguing and is drawn to her in a motherly way. As Lore and Cassie’s relationship develops, Cassie wonders if Lore is being upfront with her, or if there’s more to this woman who successfully maintained two families for years.
I really enjoyed this book. Lore is such a complexly written character. I found myself liking and disliking her all at the same time. I could see how Lore was able to get into two relationships. It seemed like she had all she needed between her two husbands. It was good to see this toy of story from a female perspective. Often books like this are written where the husband is leading the double life, it was good to see a woman turning the tables. Really good read.
Thank you at Scene of the Crime and Netgalley for this ARC.
I feel so bad it took me so long to read this! Overall a highly enjoyable read. I feel it did drag a little and could have been edited down significantly. The writing however is very strong and I look forward to reading more from this author. Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to read and review.
More Than You’ll Ever Know is a somewhat twisty family drama about Dolores Rivera (aka Lore) and her double life, married to two different men. Cassie Bowman is a true crime blog writer who becomes enamored with Lore and her story of love, loss and murder. The story was a bit slow at times, but I was too intrigued to stop. The story does change points of view and time/year which I usually don’t like but this was done well. The story all flows and ties together well, and while I was only mildly surprised by the ending, I did really appreciate the way it all came together.
Thank you to Scene of the Crime, William Morrow, and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this in exchange for my honest opinion.
Really interesting book. about Lore Rivera and what led to her being married to two men at the same time. When one spouse finds out about the other, it leads to a tragic ending. Cassie Bowman decides to tell Lore's story in a book while working through her own situation.
The world passes judgment on people without knowing the full story all too often. Lore's handling of her situation was her method. I'm glad Lore RIvera was given the chance to tell her story through Cassie. We often make decisions based on what's best for everyone else., as though we will be punished if we do something that makes us feel good. Everyone deserves to be seen and heard. I so wish Lore had spoken up and let Fabian Rivera know what she was feeling rather than doing what was expected of her. I wish she had spoken up and let Andres Russo know that she was married. I'm sure she would make different choices if she had to do this over. Well, maybe not.
Thank you NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this story. It was a quick read for me and the true crime feel made it much more enjoyable. I look forward to reading more from Katie Gutierrez in the future!
This book really has me mixed about how I feel about it, which is why I gave it three stars. I liked the different timelines and the story line itself, but I felt like a good 50-75 pages could have been removed from this book and I wouldn't have missed anything. I would recommend it, but would also tell people that a lot of it could be skimmed.
