I'm not much of a true crime reader (or podcast listener), but since Shenandoah is just a short drive away, I knew patron interest would be high for this title. (We already have four holds.)
This has a similar feel to I'll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara, in that the author's personal interest/attachment to the case is very much a part of the narrative (but not to a negative effect). I am way of true crime narratives/podcasts and fandom because it seems so exploitative at times. Miles treats the dignity and lives of the victims with care and respect; I felt at ease immediately (in that regard). This can be an emotionally challenging read at times, but definitely a worthwhile one.
Many thanks to Algonquin Books and NetGalley for a digital copy in exchange for an honest review.
This book was very good, though ultimately unsatisfying. Not because there's no final arrest and conviction, the writer can't help that. But the book was front loaded with all kinds of statistics and trips to visit the FBI. It was a slow start, but not a dealbreaker.
This book was so frustrating!! I can't understand why the law enforcement dealing with this case has seemingly purposely buried their heads in the sand about the possibility of their original suspect not being the real killer. So so frustrating and brings up questions of how many other cases have been treated the same way.
