Many thanks to NetGalley and Simon and Schuster for gifting me a digital ARC of the new book by Samantha M. Bailey - 4 stars for an intriguing thriller!
Sarah and her husband, Daniel, move from Vancouver to Toronto for a fresh start - and a start away from their babysitter, Holly. But is their new home any safer? Are they any safer?
Told in two different points of view - Sarah in the present and Holly before. This book will leave you wondering who you can trust, especially in this world of surveillance devices everywhere. None of the characters were extremely likable and but it didn't take away from the tension of figuring out all the secrets people are keeping to themselves and how everything would play out.
This book had quite a bit of hype attached to it on social media and was delighted to receive it as an eARC. This is my second book by this author and I do enjoy her writing style. Sarah, mom to 6 year old Jacob is in protection mode and decides the family will move away from their current home to get away from nanny Holly. This book was told from dual perspectives and did have a decent flow to the story. There were some spots where the story dragged a bit and could’ve been shortened, but overall I was entertained. I enjoyed that the story was told partly in a place I have visited many times. The characters were not really likeable but that’s also part of the plot. Twists and turns delivered throughout! I would recommend this book and rated as a 3.75/5 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
Holly Monroe is in med school and has always been at her wealthy pharmaceutical family’s beck and call. It’s always been left up to her to seal the deal when it comes to investors. She is quite charming and she’ll go to great lengths to please her father. When there is a break in the family, Holly takes on a nanny job with the Goldman’s. Soon Holly is completely entangled in their lives. It’s the family she’s always dreamed of and Sarah is the mother she wished she had. When secrets come out, she schemes to fix the problem. The more she schemes, the more Sarah is unsettled. After one shocking night, Sarah and her husband, Daniel, along with their 6 year old son, Jacob, make a sudden move across the country, but is it far enough away from Holly? A story of obsession, voyeurism and trust, this was an entertaining read, but on the implausible side.
Sarah, her husband and her young son are moving to Toronto from Vancouver for a fresh start. Sarah suspected her nanny of trying to seduce her husband. When weird things start to happen at their new home, Sarah realises their past may have followed them across the country.
I requested this book on NetGalley because I saw how popular the author’s first book was. I was disappointed with her second novel, although I have Woman on the Edge waiting for me in my book cart. I did love the Canadian setting which is often rare! I live not far from Toronto and I enjoyed the familiarity of their new neighborhood. Sarah was just so unlikeable. She was extremely unaware of how unwell she was and it impacted all of her relationships. I predicted the big plot twist at the end, which I generally find a good indicator of how good the plot is of a thriller. I did feel bad for Holly in parts, but similar to Sarah, also unlikeable. Thanks to @simonschusterca and @netgalley for my review copies.
I liked this book. I think it’s a really solid mystery/thriller that centers around family.
The dual perspective from the babysitter Holly and the mom Sarah works well here. It shows that we believe what we want in the moment even when the reality might be different.
While I did predict the twist far before it happened, I still enjoyed the progression of the story. I think Bailey’s book is well paced and intriguing. I liked the cast of characters and range of issues that were presented.
I give this a 3.75/5
This book is told in alternating perspectives during two different timelines – then and now. It is the story of Holly, a girl in her early 20s who has dropped out of medical school and starts babysitting for a local family. And Sarah, the mother of the boy she’s babysitting. Both are trying to essentially restart their lives, but both have issues getting in their way. Something happens causing Sarah and her family to move across the country. What exactly that is, is the unknown. You can make some assumptions but won’t know for sure until the end.
I enjoyed this book but feel it would have been better as a novella. It dragged in a few places and seemed a little repetitive at times. Although it’s already not a long book, I think if it were shorter, it would have been much better.
Thank you to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for gifting me with an advanced copy to read and provide and honest review (if I choose).
Sarah, Daniel, and their young son have just moved from BC to Ontario to a new home after a major falling out with their nanny, Holly. Holly saw herself as a part of their family and suddenly, they were gone. I really wanted to learn more about Holly and Sarah's relationship and where things went wrong. The paranoia was strong for Sarah and I was constantly questioning if I could trust what anyone was saying. Bonus for me: the book was set in Canada!
Watch Out For Her is a twisted psychological domestic thriller. The story begins with Sarah, Daniel and Jacob Goldman moving to Vancouver to their new home. It's a rental and not exactly what Sarah had in mind, but it is just temporary. The move to Vancouver is supposed to be for a new job, but that's not true. Although there are many secrets the first one we learn is the family moved to get away from Holly, the babysitter turned nanny. The story is told from two points of views, Holly and Sarah, past and the present.
The past - Holly comes from a wealthy family. Her mother died giving birth to her and her father has remarried. John Monroe married Lisette a shallow social climber with daughter Alexis who is older than Holly. All John cares about is his business and Holly's ability to be a closer. Whether John is aware or not of how this is accomplished remains to be seen. While golfing John suggests Holly could be Daniel and Sarah's babysitter for the summer. Holly is sure that there must be an alternative reason for John or that would never have been suggested. After meeting the new family Holly is excited to babysit since she likes the family. Holly sees an opportunity for herself to "become part of the family." Holly sees in Sarah the perfect mother figure and wants to be loved by her.
The present - As Holly is looking around the new house she sees cameras hidden in the house and begins to panic, thinking Holly is tracking them. Sarah starts to receive anonymous texts and other strange things happen as she begins to wonder about all the strange new neighbors. Who is watching her now?
There is so much going on in this story. Every character has secrets. As the story builds it is hard to guess who is responsible for terrorizing Sarah. This was well written and had many moving parts that all came together at the end. The author kept me guessing the entire time for the shocking conclusion.
Thank you NetGalley, the publisher and author for an advanced copy. I really enjoyed Ms Bailey's previous book Woman on the Edge, so I was looking forward to her latest work. It did not disappoint. Watch Out for Her is a fasted paced thriller, Female friendships make for interesting dynamics. Without giving the ending, I did have it figured out about half way through. That did not make me not want to continue as I was captivated as to how the author was going to get there. This would be a great summer/pool read.
Man, female friendships are truly a strange thing to behold. This was a pretty addictive read and I could really get behind Sarah being so suspicious of her new neighbors - it’s a scary world out there! I had one issue with the ending & maybe it was just a small plot hole but otherwise it really surprised me (yay!) because I truly had no idea where the plot was going but it made sense in the end. I love how Bailey thanked so many book bloggers & bookstagrammers in her acknowledgements - keep up the good work, friends!
I love reading thrillers/suspense type of books, so I was excited when I received a digital ARC of this title. Unfortunately, this book didn't really do it for me. It was okay, but nothing that made me want to keep reading all night long. I wanted to know what all the secrets were, but they weren't really all that intriguing once they were revealed. I don't mind the flip-flop from past to present, and can find that really helps pull a story together sometimes, but the chapters were so long, I lost interest in the suspense part by the time the chapter ended. Overall, this book wasn't one of my favorites. Thank you NetGalley and Simon & Schuster Canada for a digital arc of this title.
I requested this book because it came highly recommended from my reviewers group and I’m honestly trying to figure out why. Every character in the book is such a hot mess it’s almost painful to read. Really there could’ve been such a better twist, but in the end it just kind of fell flat.
Watch out for her. An ominous warning? Or an expression of concern? These are questions readers need to answer to solve the latest suspense thriller by Samantha M. Bailey. With an abundance of lies and secrets, envy and mistrust, Watch Out For Her leaves readers scrambling to figure out who to believe, who to trust and who to watch out for. This story unfolds through the voices of two highly suspicious narrators in a past/present timeline that brings readers up to speed in what happened in the past that led to the volatile situation characters find themselves in today.
Then - Sarah and Daniel Goldman hire twenty-two year old Holly Monroe as a nanny to their six year old son Jacob, allowing Sarah time to pursue her photography. Little do they know this will turn out to be a fatal mistake. On the surface, the Goldman's appear to be a normal, happy upper middle class family living the dream. Holly envies and desires the Goldman's easy family atmosphere and sets about manipulating her way into the family as a trusted member. Everything is beautiful . . . until it isn't. After witnessing a shocking event, Sarah realizes all is not as it seems and thus asks her husband to move their family to escape the obsessive babysitter. In a desperate, last ditch effort to protect his own secrets, Daniel agrees to move clear across the country.
Now - After the family moves, the new beginning the Goldman's so desperately hoped for eludes them. Sarah finds hidden cameras in their new house the first day, a prowler is seen in the yard that night and their new neighbors are a bit strange . Cryptic text messages, moved security cameras and not so subtle innuendos have Sarah in a panic, and Daniel questioning her sanity. The story that ensues is a roller coaster of emotional turmoil, obsession and disbelief. Is Holly seeking revenge for being left behind by a family she staked her claim on? Or is Sarah delusional?
Watch Out For Her is a tense, character driven thriller with an overabundance of family drama. The steady pace gains momentum as the story plays out, and secrets begin spilling over leaving this dysfunctional family desperate for answers even as each member continues guarding their own secrets. Readers have the huge advantage of being in both Holly and Sarah's head space as they take turns narrating the story of what has and is transpiring from their own unique view point. Unfortunately, neither of these two characters know what the other is thinking. While I found the plot line to be a bit predictable at times, the execution of the story is excellent and my need to know kept me burning through pages. I was able to deduce the conclusion and the who/what/why before the big reveal, but it didn't diminish my enjoyment or the rising tension. Watch Out For Her is an anxiety riddled ride with a menacing undertone that keeps readers guessing. Bailey has peeled back the layers of a broken family, revealing the depth of devastation brought about by distrust, too many secrets and obsession. Fans of mystery and suspense will enjoy this book, especially if they love character driven thrillers.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It kept me on the edge of my seat and kept me wanting to read more the whole way to the ending!
I loved this book! It has me hooked from the first chapter. It is told from before and after a central event. We don’t learn what the event is until the end so it keeps you guessing. I’ve read the authors first book and loved it so I knew I had to read her newest book. The author’s writing style brings you into the book and you can imagine the scenes as you read them. It was a very quick read for me because I didn’t want to put it down!
A great follow up thriller by the lovely (and Canadian!!) Samantha M. Bailey!
Sarah Goldman is relieved to move her family across the country. Her six year old Jacob had a twenty two year old nanny named Hannah that was getting too close to their family. Sarah loved Hannah like a daughter until she saw something she couldn’t unsee and her family fled. Now she’s convinced Hannah is still watching them after finding hidden cameras in her new home… what does Hannah want with them?
This one was a great physiological thriller! It was tense and quick so I was eager to power through it. The story reads from both Hannah and Sarah’s perspectives which is great to see the past and present storylines intertwine. The big twist had me guessing right till the end which is all one can hope for in a solid thriller!!
I also loved that the book was set in both Toronto and Vancouver! All my Canadian friends will enjoy a great deal of locations they are sure to know and recognize in the story which adds a great visual element.
This is the second book I’ve read by Samantha M. Bailey and I loved it even more then her first!
A beautiful family in a beautiful suburb who seemingly have everything. But secrets are dangerous and everyone seems to have them. A thrilling ride of a read not to be missed!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Simon Schuster for this ARC!
Sarah and her family, her husband Daniel and her son Jacob, have moved across Canada to start anew in a new town as her husband starts his new job. She is especially eager to leave behind their former babysitter, Holly. It had started out so perfectly, with Holly watching Jacob while Sarah worked in her darkroom on her passion, photography. Slowly Sarah began to see things that concerned her; little did she know Holly was seeing things that brought with them some concerns as well. Holly’s home didn’t bring with it love and a sense of family, but instead a sense of obligation and pressure to maintain a picture of family perfection and ambition. Holly seemed to find what she was missing with Sarah and her family, a feeling of family, a feeling that Sarah would do anything to protect. Unfortunately, moving to a new town may not have been enough to get away from Holly.
Watch Out For Her is quite the twisted novel. The story is told through the eyes of two women–Holly and Sarah–along two timelines; one tells about the events in the past and the other covers the present, and these two timelines come together so well by the end of the novel. I liked how Bailey ended many of the chapters with little cliffhangers, making me want to go on and read more to see what would happen, creating a serious page-turner of a novel. I also liked that the two main characters are strong women, determined to protect those that they care about and love. I did have my suspicions about the “big reveal” rather early on, suspicion that proved to be true, but that did not take away from my enjoyment of the novel.
I highly recommend Watch Out For Her, which releases on April 26th; it is an incredible edge-of-your-seat novel. Thank you to NetGalley and Simon Schuster for gifting to me an early electronic copy of Watch Out For Her, given in exchange for an honest review; all opinions are my own.
Bailey is a Toronto author whose first book was the bestselling "Woman on the Edge". This is her second novel and is another psychological thriller. Set in both Vancouver and Toronto it is told from two points of view, Sarah and Holly. Sarah is married to Daniel and has a six-year-old son, Jacob. She hires Holly, who just finished her first year of med school, to babysit Jacob so she has time to work on her photography. While Holly comes from wealth, her home life is not happy and she quickly takes to this new family, but all the adults have secrets and they are eventually going to come out. I enjoyed it and it is a good recommendation for fans of the genre. 3.5/5 stars.
Samantha M. Bailey’s new thriller Watch Out For Her is a well written novel you don’t want to miss. It is told in dual point of views and timelines that flowed together so well I was unable to put it down! Bailey takes you on one heck of a roller coaster ride so you better buckle up extra tight! This psychological thriller checks all the boxes! It is filled with family drama, lies, hidden secrets, obsessions,, blackmail and stalking! It kept me guessing right up to that jaw dropping ending I never saw coming! Bailey will not disappoint with this one and she will keep you on the edge of your seat! I highly recommend this one and look forward to reading more from this very talented author.
Thank you NetGalley, Simon and Schuster Publishing and Samantha M. Bailey for an advanced copy of this very intense, relentless book in exchange for my honest review.
