Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with this ebook in exchange for a review.
This was my first read from Bailey, my mother however was a big fan of her first book and this one definitely lived up to the hype.
This was the first thriller that I had read in a while and it was fantastic. Bailey wrote a story that keeps you needing to read more. As our characters' stories progress it becomes impossible to stop. I thought about the book constantly when I wasn't reading it.
From now on I will 100% read everything that Samantha M. Bailey puts out.
The author set the tone for this book on page 1 which made for an instant page-turner. I really enjoyed the characters, the pacing and the overall story line. You get a sense early on that not everything is at it appears and yet it was hard to predict exactly what led up to the present moment in the story.
LOVED this story of Sarah, her husband Daniel, son Jacob, and Holly, the new babysitter!! Holly takes the sitting job that Sarah offers her and quickly becomes a part of the family, though in quite an odd way. She loves both Sarah and Daniel, and wants to fix all their problems for them, but as the story proceeds, she really just makes their lives more difficult. The story, written in a back and forth format between Holly and Sarah, kept me on the edge of my seat, and I was compelled to read it in record time. The ending was exciting, and quite unexpected!
Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read and review Watch Out for Her!
What a great twisty thriller. This book pulled me in immediately with the two main characters Sarah and Holly. In Holly’s eyes Sarah is the perfect mother. After being used and disregarded by her own family Holly decides she is going to be a part of Sarah’s family no matter what she has to do to accomplish it. What follows is a chain of twisty turns that lead to an explosive conclusion I never saw coming. What a great read that will leave you thinking about this book. Definitely a keeper and one I will recommend to my reading friends so we can discuss this book
Fans of WOMAN ON THE EDGE will enjoy this follow up novel which shows the darker side of paranoid helicopter parenting. Told from a duo POV this fast paced thriller is a slick tale of suspense fuelled by a continually deepening mystery.
Samantha Bailey did it again! I would even venture to say I liked this book more than 'a woman on the edge'.
I could not put this down. I was kept guessing until the end and loved every minute of it.
Mom (Sarah) is super sensitive about EVERYONE and EVERYTHING…..you might call her paranoid.
Holly is a rich girl, attending medical school and expected to take over her fathers business some day..
Jacob is the charming little boy that Sarah and her husband, Daniel, have together.
Holly comes to meet them as a babysitter. Jacob loves her…so does Sarah…..Daniel is rarely home but likes Holly too.
But they all have secrets…..and it is all coming unraveled.
Sarah and her paranoia is a bit over the top to start the book, but as it goes along, you begin to appreciate the angst that she is feeling.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for my unbiased opinion.
I do recommend this book. It is very good.
This was a decent read but not spectacular. It’s a fast paced thriller that keeps you guessing. However, it felt repetitive at times and the twists fell a bit flat for me. Overall, a decent book though.
This fast-paced thriller was hard to put down! And just when you think you have it figured out...you don't.
Sarah is a mom and a wife with low self-worth who is looking for validation. Holly is a young woman seeking assurance that someone loves her. Together they form a bond that is broken by a web of lies. Toss in an adorable little boy and a husband who has gotten in over his head and you've got yourself a real page-turner.
I enjoyed this story. It is the first I have read of Samantha Bailey's but look forward to reading more.
Unfortunately, this book is not something I would typically read, and I think I was correct in making that assessment for myself. The writing is stilted and the author seems to be attempting to step into another person's shoes in their writing style, it's like a child wearing their mothers' heels around the house. I feel like if they had gone with the more comfortable language the writing would be more accessible and less robotic.
Watch Out for Her
A Novel
by Samantha M. Bailey
My thanks to Net Galley and Simon. and Shuster for allowing me to review this book.
I really enjoyed this book. IT was steady on and slowed in the middle a bit. But, excellent writing.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an ARC of Watch Out for Her by Samantha M Bailey!!
I have previously read Woman on the Edge by this author and I loved Watch Out for Her even more! I thought I knew where this book was going and I was completely wrong and pleasantly surprised with the ending of this book.
Anyone who likes suspense will love this novel. You get multiple points of view which I really appreciate because these characters are all so complicated and complex. I was not able to put this book down once I got started!
I look forward to reading more by Samantha M Bailey!
Samantha M Bailey’s second novel Watch Out For Her is a thriller with dueling POV between two women that will leave you guessing until the final page. A twisty and unsettling novel with unreliable narrators creates a binge-worthy read that will keep you reading with the lights on all night. Sarah a mother and wife who is fiercely protective of her son Jacob reluctantly hires university student Holly for the summer to babysit. Holly’s a young and troubled woman whose wealthy family leaves her craving for the love and security of a close-knit family like the Goldman's. Holly becomes increasingly obsessed with Sarah and her family, Sarah’ watchful eye catches glimpses of the true Holly and what she will do for approval. Fearful, Sarah and her family move to Toronto for a fresh start, but when history starts to repeat itself, are they truly free? Set in both British Columbia and Ontario the contrast between the two locals become a dangerous landscape where Holly and Sarah both battle to keep what they can’t lose. Whose story do you believe? It is never as simple as it seems, and this story will have you double guessing everybody’s motives. A Canadian domestic thriller will be a hit, can you really trust those closest to you? In conclusion, I really loved the spooky tree in shadow in the chapter header, it really added to the atmosphere of the novel. Thank you to NetGalley and Simon and Shuster Canada for this ARC, all opinions are my own.
A high addictive domestic thriller than kept me on edge from start to finish; I ended up finishing it in less than one day. Thrillers are my favorite Genre, but a good domestic thriller is definitely my favorite. An interesting view on obsessions and voyeurism and the secrets we keep from the people we love. Sarah is a bit neurotic and spends every waking second caring for her 6-year-old son and husband. Her husband, Daniel suggests hiring a summer babysitter so Sarah can have time for herself and focus on photography. Holly is the perfect fit; home from medical school for the summer, young Jacob adores her, and her parents are members of the country club they belong to. But what they don't know is the secrets Holly keeps behind closed doors and the way she "helps" her father's pharmaceutical company. Holly soon becomes obsessed with becoming a member of their family and continues to find new ways to infiltrate their lives. But Sarah and Daniel both have secrets too. When the whole family picks up and moves across the country, to start fresh, Sarah can't help feeling like she is being watched. Is someone out to get her or are her neuroses turning to paranoia? Told in dual timelines and with dual narration, It was unputdownable. While this was my first novel by Bailey, it won't be my last.
You know when you want to have an excellently fun time and you know just the person to call?
Well, I have to tell you, when I'm looking for a twisty and relentlessly addictive read, I pick up a Samantha Bailey book.
WATCH OUT FOR HER, Sam's new book from Simon & Schuster Canada, pub date April 19, is a highly crafted, deeply unsettling domestic voyeur thriller that is mired in obsessive love, kinky sex, behind-the-scenes machinations, and quirky co-dependence relationships.
As with every psychological thriller, I try my damndest to figure out who's real, who's pretending to be real, and who the hidden beard is- the one person who is responsible for all of the chaos but is buried so deep in the shadows that you don't give said person much thought. I waffled back and forth throughout the WATCH OUT FOR HER chapters, trying to decide who was the character that had 'THE' issues. Was it Sarah Goldman, mother of six-year-old Jacob, and a puzzling voyeur of her twenty-two-year-old babysitter, Holly? Was it Sarah's husband, Daniel, whose two-stepping made me wonder exactly who he was stepping out with, and why? And hey... who installed the hidden cameras in Sarah and Daniel's new house-they might have been there before, except now they are in places they previously hadn't been. When all is said and done, isn't it the family stories that happen behind closed doors and drawn curtains that are the most fascinating- that make us feel that maybe our own families are not that weird after all? Or, maybe they are.
Samantha Bailey is the USA Today and the #1 national bestselling author for a reason, and when you delve into WATCH OUT FOR HER, I promise you, you'll discover Why. WATCH OUT FOR HER on April 19th. It's a guaranteed un-put-down-able-read.
I'm a sucker for Thrillers and this was better than I expected.
It switches between past and present, different points of view. It's very easy to follow. Keeps your attention.
The story line is one that I think a lot of people can relate too, spending time with a family that feels more your own than the one you really have. There was the typical "sleeping with the babysitter" theme, which turned out to be so much more.
The lies people tell get spun out of control and create a bigger mess than if they had been honest to begin with.
Overall, I enjoyed this!
Wow, I did not see that ending coming! This is one of my favorite reads so far this year. It is told in a nonlinear timeline from two points of view, helicopter mom, Sarah, who is very annoying at times and their 22-year-old babysitter, Holly. Sarah and her husband Daniel, along with 6-year-old son Jacob suddenly leave their Vancouver home and move to Toronto to get away from Holly. This is such a suspenseful, captivating domestic thriller you will not bet able to put down.
Thank you NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for the ARC of this page-turner that kept me reading way past my bedtime.
Following a very strong debut, Sam Bailey returns with an even more captivating second novel. Watch Out For Her follows two closely related timelines across two cities (Vancouver and Toronto) as we work to understand why Sarah, Daniel and Jacob were "forced" to move to Toronto to start over. Haunted by a recent relationship with their babysitter, Holly, hired in Vancouver to give Sarah a bit of time to herself while her husband seemingly works around the clock - or does he? There are a number of threads being woven through this one that finds it way to their new home. The ending is unexpected and I for one did not see it coming. I read the second half of this book in one setting.
Watch Out for Her by Samantha Bailey is a good beach read if you are looking for some suspense/mystery thriller. Holly Monroe seemed at first to have everything but she was not happy and her family life was far from normal. What she really wanted was a family to love her. Holly thought she found this in the Goldman Family who she was babysitting for over the summer. Everyone in this book has secretes that are revealed through the book.
Watch Out for Her is a quick read that kept my interest. I don't want to repeat the synopsis nor do I want to give any of the secretes away. The book is a bit far fetched in a few areas but overall a good read.
I would like to thank NetGalley for an advanced copy of Watch Out for Her in exchange for an honest review.. #NetGalley #SamanthaMBailey #WatchOutForHer
I love when books are set in Canada! This book is told in a non linear format and Samantha is a great writer. The story has a few issues but overall, I really liked this thriller. I was constantly questioning if I could trust what the narrator was saying which is always a great thing in a thriller.
