Sigh… I did not enjoy this book at all’s I really don’t like to give poor reviews but this was just terrible on multiple levels. I was very excited to get an ARC about infertility struggles and IVF. This was not a good story. The treatment of the protagonist by her family and hometown was deplorable. I why everyone knew about her cheating divorce, but why was everyone privy to her medical history and endometriosis. Awful! The way her mother tried to bargain her off to any Y chromosome was cringe worthy. The heroine was just a clueless character. I really did not understand why a 31 y/o in NYC divorced or not had no friends or even acquaintances?! Josh deserved a lot better in my opinion. A lot of potential with a a unique plot point about the infertility struggles but this was just not well done.
Thanks to NetGalley for the Advanced audiobook copy
What a delight! I so enjoyed this book. I was engrossed from the beginning and listened to it in a day. It's funny & sweet, but also heartfelt as difficult topics like infertility and death are addressed.
This book was so cute and also my very first audiobook ever! I really thought I knew what was going to happen, until I didn’t. I actually almost stopped listening because “I know what’s going to happen” lol 🤣 I also loved the effort by the narrator, she did a great job telling the story! I need to know what happens next though, a sequel to this would be so awesome!
A sweet love story. I loved the characters and the banter between them. It did discuss some tough infertility issues, and so could be sensitive to some. I will definitely be looking for more from this author. A good funny rom com!
I really loved Josh and Gemma Had A Baby! It was such a cute romance book to read this February. I was honestly rooting for Iain at the beginning (like two chapters) but once Gemma really started spending time with Josh, I couldn’t not fall in love with Josh. Books like this are so fun to read, especially between heavier books. I think that this book was such a cute book, and I loved the representation of all the different individuals going through IVF. I don’t usually like books that have parents breathing down their kids necks to get in a relationship, but the way Gemma stood up for herself, not only with her family but also Iain. This book was so enjoyable and was very well narrated as well!
4.5☆
I absolutely loved this book! It was such a cute romcom that discussed a really important topic in a really amazing way! I really enjoyed the writing and the characters were amazing except a certain Ken doll🙄 Gemma and Josh deserve everything and I'm so happy about the girls on the support group! They really made the book. Took of half a star for some awkward and cringe moments. All in all, highly recommend this one! One last thing, if you expect a lot of spice this is not the book for you!
I almost gave this one a 4 and ½ but it deserves all the stars! This book was wonderful.
A huge thank you to NetGalley Swift and Lewis Publishing for my advanced listeners copy of Josh and Gemma Make a Baby.
Me listening to this book almost didn't happen. My Book Bestie Stacie loved it and I succumbed to the peer pressure. (To be honest it really doesn't take much. I trust my friends)
What I Loved-
*The Audio- Josh and Gemma Make a Baby was narrated by Erin Mallon. She did an excellent job. I've heard her before on previous audiobooks and I look forward to listening to her narrate other books in the future.
*The Humor- This Book was so stinkin funny. I loved the banter between all the characters.
*IVF- This book deals with infertility and IVF. If those things are triggering proceed with caution or maybe even skip if you are not in the right head space. This book was really eye opening to me. The things women go through in the process of becoming pregnant through IVF is heartbreaking.
*The Friendships- I loved Gemma's friends in support group.
*The Romance- I love Josh and Gemma as a couple. Their friendship was amazing. I loved their progression from friends to lovers. The end of this book when everything pieces together was perfect.
*This is a Series- The fact that I will be getting more Josh and Gemma makes my heart happy. I cannot wait.
Overall- Highly Recommend. Sarah Ready was a new to me author and I am so excited to read more books by her.
I loved this book – but it made me cry ... and I don't tend to cry from books I read. This story was sweet and eye-opening, teaching readers (and characters) how important it is not to judge people based on assumptions and stereotypes, but rather to take the time to get to know others. As much as I loved this one, please be aware of the trigger warnings: infertility, miscarriages, cheating.
Listening to this made it feel so much more real and truly put me in the story – which was both amazing and a bit traumatic for me.
I keep going back and forth on my rating for this one, so I think I will go with 3.5 stars rounded to 4. Overall, Josh and Gemma Make a Baby was cute. I loved the beginning and super loved the ending. The middle, not so much. I wish there would have been some of Josh's POV, it definitely would've helped the book. Being in Gemma's head the whole time was at times very tiring. This is the typical story where you as a reader and everyone else in the story can see from miles away how much the guy is into the girl, but the girl is the last one to realize it. In this case, the girl is insufferable for most of the book, and see my previous point, being in her head the entire time did not work. The book is well written though, and it has a really good balance between romantic-comedy and tackling difficult subjects like infertility. It also has some great secondary characters. While insufferable, Gemma's growth arc is pretty good, I just wished it would've arrived earlier in the story. It just gave very little room to see on page, the main characters together for long. The audiobook narration by Erin Mallon is great though, she's definitely a favorite of mine. This is my first book by this author but I will definitely check out more.
I devoured this audiobook in a day and a half. I believe a book is something to get lost in and sometimes it's not 100% believable. Are there parts of the story that are believable? Yes, of course. However, there are stories that happen in our life that sometimes seem crazy and this isn't real life, is it?
Gemma has wanted a baby forever, but didn't believe that it would happen for her. She's a divorcee and believes that love will not happen for her. So she decides to make her own love by having a baby, which is something that she has always wanted and has decided that she will do it without a partner. The self-doubt talk that she has I believe is from her own idea of how her family/friends view her. These are not words that are from her mom or friends and I think this is true for a lot of woman. The self doubt that our own voices in our head says to us. Gemma believes that the only thing relationship that she deserves is with a man that is not present, Ian. Someone who is self absorbed with themselves and doesn't care about any other person.
If you want a fun, light-hearted read and something that you can just get lost in, then definitely read this book.
100% a 2021 favorite! Josh and Gemma Make a Baby had everything I love in a novel; semi-chaotic heroine, wonderful banter, extreme emotion, fantastic characters. I adored this story so much and Erin Mallon’s narration was perfection.
After a failed marriage, being told she’s infertile, and just plain bad luck Gemma decides she’s going to have a baby. She asks a family friend to be her donor. Her only goal is to have a baby and start a family on her own. Shortly after Gemma starts a new relationship and she notices that different feeling and emotions she’s been refusing to see since her divorce start to resurface.
I thought that this was an adorable story of friend ship and love.
An early edition of this audiobook was provided courtesy of NetGalley and Swift & Lewis Publishing LLC. Thank you, I really appreciate it because otherwise it was highly unlikely I picked up this book.
I admit that I am not a romance book reader typically. If one to categorize my reading habits, I would say about 2% of my reading would be romance category. I love non-fiction and classic books, and romance books are ... just... not my cup of tea. However, this book brought me so much joy!
This book is about Gemma, a divorced thirty something woman who decides to have a baby even though she has no partner. Over a family holiday party, she decides to ask Josh, her brother's best friend, to be a sperm donor.
This book is laugh-out-out funny and it reminded me of Bridget Jones's Diary. I love the self-deprecating humor in this book, and a triangle between Gemma, Josh and her boss Ian. Gemma's friends at fertility support group are cute, her family is supportive, and all in all very surprisingly enjoyable (I say "surprisingly" because majority of romance book are either too silly, too corny, too predictable, too steamy, etc... for me. To be honest I DNF majority of romance books I start). I am a prissy classic book lover, and there are a few cringy scenes I didn't care for in this book. Otherwise this book was really fun. I would read another book from this author for sure.
The award-winning narrator, Erin Mallon does an excellent job reading this book.
This was a complete binge read for me. I love a somewhat friends-to-lovers trope and this book completely delivered. Gemma has so much going for her in her life, she's got a great career, amazing friends, and is genuinely happy. But something is missing and despite being told she will never have a baby she decides on New Years Day that this will be the year she has a baby. With or without Mr. Right. Enter Josh, her brother's best friend. Jpsh and Gemma are total opposites but in Gemma's mind that might just make the perfect person to donate their sperm. She approaches Josh and to her surprise he says yes. The story takes off from there and I love every minute of it. The narrator was also incredible!!
Josh and Gemma Make a Baby is the predictable, fluffy RomCom you need when you just need to take a break and unwind. There's enough foreshadowing that you can immediately recognize who to root for and who is the villain of our IVF/First Comes Baby bubble of Romance.
A fun twist on your standard Romance? Gemma is a flawed narrator. She is a little selfish and frequently fails to see a situation from all perspectives. Fortunately she has growth, and her failures make her all the more human and relatable. It's not quite so bad that she is unlikable, but it can be a little grating if "failure to communicate" is on your list of Romance Don'ts.
I will say that if I had been reading a physical copy rather than listening to Erin Mallon's gorgeous narration, I don't know if I would have made it through some of the more ridiculous scenes. I get terrible vicarious or secondhand embarrassment and Gemma finds herself in so many awkward situations that I would have been tempted to skim over.
I do enjoy a hate to love story and I was fully invested in Josh and Gemma falling in love initially. While I loved Josh, I found Gemma to be unlikable and kind of dense. She had to have the littlest thing explained to her that should have been obvious. Also, the scenes that were meant to be funny were just weird and improbable. I also loved the new friends that Gemma made but had absolutely no other friends. I thought that was kind of weird. I ski thing that more could have been made of the office rivalry, I feel that the author really dropped the ball there. I liked the rival more than the heroine to tell you the truth.
I really enjoyed this book!! I do wish there was more info at the end but I'm hoping that means there will be another book!
Thanks to NetGalley for giving me the chance to give an honest review.
This book was a nice change of pace. Even though the topic may be a trigger warning for many, it was done In a delicate way. Even with the subject matter, this book still felt like a light read, which I really appreciate. I definitely recommend it.
This book reminds you pain isn’t always permanent and hope should never be lost. Second chances are always possible.
I listened to this on audio and the narrator did a wonderful job bringing these characters to life.
Perfectly binge-able read! I am a sucker for friends-to-lovers and enemies-to-lovers books that I can listen to while I am at work, on a run, or cleaning the house. Josh and Gemma's quirky relationship totally did it for me. I found myself rooting for them from the beginning (assuming what was to come). I am a sucker for finding out how the obvious character matchup will unfold, especially on Valentine's Day.
I really wanted to like this book a lot more than I did. I was looking forward to the use of unusual tropes, mainly infertility and alternative forms of pregnancy/IVF. However, I think the story fell short on several things. One, the chemistry between Josh and Gemma was lackluster, and it felt too primitive and superficial. Second, the IVF process seems unrealistic. Next, literally, everyone had a lot of disproportionate hate towards Gemma. She is body shammed and harassed for being divorced and older. I think these interactions were done with the intent for the reader to feel Gemma want for a family and her decisions, but it was just too much. I will say that some of the banter in this book was genuinely funny.
Regardless, the narration of this book was excellent. Erin Mallon brings Gemma and all her mess to life. There is a bit more to be desired from the male voices but great overall.
