Emma Lord has done it again! I absolutely loved her debut, Tweet Cute, and this latest release is just as delightful. The romance is not the central conflict of the novel; instead, it’s a Mamma Mia spinoff, where future Broadway star Millie, decides to find her birth mother and narrows it down to three women (based on her dad’s LiveJournal entries, am I old?). Her journey of personal growth is accompanied by wonderful characters and countless Broadway references (which absolutely delighted me). The audio is performed well and it’s a very satisfying and heartwarming tale.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance copy.

4.5 stars! loved this one, from the characters and their relationships to the setting! full review to come soon
thank you NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC of this book for this honest review!

Cute story. The Mamma Mia connection is pretty well done. TBH, I am more interested in the adults in the story than I am the teenagers which is a problem since the adults are all background characters. I would much rather read this story from Beth and Coop's viewpoint.
Also, I'm not sure it's intentional, but the grand reveal seemed almost like a set up for a sequel because the birth mom doesn't seem to have had any proof that Millie's dad is her actual birth father beyond her wish that it were true.
TBH, I would have rather read this story from Georgie and Steph's perspective too, or Farrah and Heather's. The adults in this book and the ways they were all connected was far more compelling for me than the teenage angst of a couple of theatre nerds 😅
The audio was okay, I didn't love the narrator, but they didn't make it a mess.

When You Get the Chance is the story of Millie and her cute, albeit somewhat annoying and very self-centered story.
Millie's dad doesn't agree to her college plans - to go to precollege and leave a year early. She never knew her mom, but she goes on a journey to find her just to try to get her on her side. Why does she think a person who has never been in her life would have a say? I don't know. But that is the entire plot, really.
Some of the side characters deserve their story to be told more. Geo-caching teens sound so much more interesting than another theater kid who thinks she deserves to walk a red carpet at all times.
It was a cute plot, though, as she goes through a Mamma Mia moment and find out which of her dad's old flings one summer could be her mom.

When You Get the Change by Emma Lord is a coming of age story that is cute, fun and filled with happiness. You cannot help but smile while reading When You Get the Change. It is a warm-hearted story about a teenager named Milly who is going places. She has goals to be in Broadway, wants to attend school across the country in LA, and is determined to find out who her mother is. All this while alongside her best friend, Teddy and her frienemy, Oliver. Will all these big life goals be accomplished in such a short period of time? Will looking to the past change Milly's future?
A great new young adult book that should be on your to be read list.
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for this ALC in exchange for an honest review.

A cute mamma mia retelling. I got to pretend I was a theater kid for a little bit. You can definitely tell that Emma Lord wrote this book. She has a specific writing style and themes that she has in all of the books that I’ve read.

What a freaking charming, fun read! Emma Lord absolutely knocked it out of the park with this one for me. Her witty characters and quick dialogue, once again, shine in this story that I absolutely COULD NOT put down. SO STINKING CUTE.
Emma Lord has such a great ability to strike a balance between silly YA fun and heavy, real topics that young (and old) people grapple with in their lives. And When You Get a Chance is no different! Intertwined in this romp through the New York musical theatre world is a realistically messy story, with flawed characters making mistakes that hurt each other, despite good intentions. That combination really makes this story get you right in the feels.
So…. As a theatre person, I was maybe a *tad* nervous that Millie (our driven, over-the-top, musical theatre diva main character) would get on my nerves. We all know *those* theatre kids that were just a bit too much and would grate on your nerves, right? But Millie is such an endearing, fully fleshed out, complex character that I immediately let go of any trepidation and was rooting for her the entire time. Also, I listened to this on audiobook and the narrator really brought Millie to life!
Despite me being a 33 year old lady, I felt such a strong connection with the young characters in this story because their choices and thinking felt *real*. As a theatre nerd teen, I think I would’ve love this story even more.
OK, I think that’s enough of me gushing about this. I’m going to pick up everything Emma Lord writes from her on out. I can’t help it. Also, this made me want to go back and reread Tweet Cute ASAP.

"When You Get the Chance" was a fun and flirty rom-com. Millie's journey to find her mother was a perfect blend of identity search and romantic comedic journey. Lord crafted the perfect book for musical theater lovers looking for a little romance.

I really enjoyed this book! The narrator for this audio did a great job. I loved the twist on Mamma Mia along with all the other musical theater references. Millie and Teddy’s friendship was sweet and I also enjoyed Millie’s relationship with her aunt. Speaking of relationships, the enemies to lovers aspect was really well done in this one! I think all of the side characters added to the storyline and at one point or another I wished each of the women would turn out to be Millie’s mom. Without spoiling anything, I’m very happy with how all of the characters’ stories ended.
I would definitely recommend this one to any musical theater fans, especially Mamma Mia fans!

Millie is the next big broadway star — at least, according to her, and that's the only opinion that matters in her quest for the stage. She just closed the curtain on her junior year of high school and got the big acceptance letter she's been dreaming of! A pre-college arts school that has cranked out the brightest broadway stars. Only thing — it's not in her hometown of New York City. It's in California, and her dorky single dad has given Millie a hard no. She got a scholarship and has a whole plan to be able to earn the rest of tuition this summer, but she'll need parental permission. Inspired by one of her favorite shows, Millie channels Mamma Mia-like sleuthing to find her three potential moms and mildly stalk them until she figures out who's her mom. Oh and then there's the Oliver issue — which is that her mortal enemy seems to keep popping up everywhere throwing off her big goals.
I knew exactly what to expect from Emma Lord but oh my gosh this book made my heart happier than I could even predict! I loved everything about this plot, setting, characters, all of it! I feel like I have such low expectations from YA, but Emma Lord knocks it out of the park. Also, I realize this book might not ~speak~ to people who have little to no interest in Broadway, however, that is not me so I WAS THRIVING.
Read if... you have days where ABBA is on repeat and if you cannot visit NYC without squeezing a show.
I adored the audio of this. The narrator seemed a little whiney at parts but TBH so was Millie... so she totally brought her to life for me.

I *adored* this book!
With quintessential Emma Lord charm, this Mamma-Mia-inspired YA romp is equal parts fun, heartwarming, and laugh-out-loud funny.
I devoured this book in two sittings, laughing over Millie's shenanigans, swooning over the will-they/won't-they enemies-to-lovers tension with Oliver, and anxiously anticipating the discovery of the identity of Millie's mom. I adore Emma's writing, her characters and settings, and all the nods to theater contained in this story. An absolute treasure!
And what a fun audiobook this is! I loved Jesse Vilinsky in her BETTER THAN THE MOVIES narration, and she did justice to WHEN YOU GET THE CHANCE. She handles female YA characters so well, and her carriage is fun and engaging. An audiobook I'll be adding to my collection, for sure!
A huge thanks to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for the e-ARC in exchange for my honest, unbiased review. WHEN YOU GET THE CHANCE is out January 4, 2022.

When you get the chance...give this book a read/listen!
Millie Price has two things that she wants in life:
1. To be a Broadway Star
2. To know the identity of her mother
A girl can dream!
And she does, Millie really does!
When Millie finds her dad's open live journal from 2003, she decides she is going to find her Mom!
Millie was left with her father after her birth. He raised her alone with the help of his older sister. That found live journal has motivated her and she has narrowed her search down to three women!
Stephanie, Farrah, and Beth!
Enter strong Mamma Mia vibes stage left!
This was a seriously cute book. Millie has her best friend, Teddy whose mad tech skills help her out in this book, then there is Oliver - her rival who might just go from enemy to frenemy.
There are antics, there is tension, there is angst, there are Millie Moods and there is a lot of fun in-between. I listened to the audio and thought it was fantastic! This was like a breath of fresh air. Fun, entertaining, and had me singing all my favorite show toons while listening to this - not at the same time of course, but you get the picture.
This book made me happy!

When You Get the Chance is a Mamma Mia inspired tale where Millie is trying to figure out who her mother is. She finds her father's old live journal entries from back when she was conceived and finds 3 possible women who may or may not be her mother. So in classic Mamma Mia fashion, she decides to meet all 3 of the women and try to figure out which one is her mother by getting to know them instead of flat out asking them. The story follows her journey as she gets to know these women and as she tries to convince her father to let her go to a pre-college for acting, plus she has to do all of this while dealing with her nemesis. Will Millie figure out which woman is her mother, get into pre-college, and survive her nemesis?
Wow! I loved Tweet Cute by Emma Lord, so I had high hopes for this one and it did not disappoint.
If you loved Mamma Mia and love good enemies to lovers stories, then this book is for you. It's full of amazing banter and so many cute moments. I was invested in all the characters and their stories from the very beginning. The relationships are all amazing, not just the main character's romantic relationship, but familial and friendships too. Plus there are cute side romances too! This book has all the cuteness! I actually started tearing up because all the cuteness made me very happy.
Audiobook specific: This audiobook is narrated by Jesse Vilinsky and I thought she did an amazing job. I was looking forward to listening to another one of her narrations, as I have listened to a couple of her previous works, and I still love her. I thought that the narrator was able to make the story even cuter than it already was, therefore, I highly recommend checking out the audiobook version of this book.
Overall, a fantastic read full of banter, cuteness, and amazing relationships. I highly recommend checking this one out.

I loved this book! While I predicted who the mom was about halfway through, I still find it very engaging and enjoyable. The only character that I found annoying was Chloe but I guess she means well. Overall, I definitely recommend and think lots of my students will really like it.

The newest book by Emma Lord is simply cuteness wrapped up in a neat package. I loved the journey of the main character and musical theatre is so fun! When You Get the Chance is a must read for all drama nerds like myself.

Sometimes slice of life books can be really cheesy and cringey to listen to, especially when they’re young adult books. And while this one was still pretty cheesy, it was still super enjoyable. Millie is A Lot, but she’s also super sweet and really does care about her friends and family (I was worried she would be too much like Rachel Berry for me to enjoy, and I am pleased to announce that is NOT the case). Oliver was a good “enemy-to-lover” character, and I didn’t mind him at all. I also loved the Mamma Mia! plot line (with a twist), which made it an even cuter read. All of the characters were enjoyable and fun to meet and I recommend this book if you’re looking for a fun, quick YA read.

This is my favorite Emma Lord book! It's a book literally written for the broadway musical nerds - like me - out there! The fact that it's a Mamma Mia retelling makes it even more fun!

This was so much fun! Millie is such a big personality with a big heart with so much love in her life. I’ve never read Emma Lord before and now I want to go back and read the other two books.

Millie Price is desperate to make it in musical theater, and when she is accepted into an early college program specializing in the arts, she knows she wants to attend. When her single father isn't on board with the idea, Millie wants another parent on her side, and starts looking into who her mother might be (she was left on her father's doorstep as a baby). The rest of the story is a Mamma Mia type story where Millie gets to know the three women who may be her mother based on her dad's journal entries.
Anybody who adores musical theater (like me) will be thrilled with all of the references in this book. Millie is a personality to be reckoned with, while also having the insecurities with being left by her mother. Not only was this book funny and whimsical, but it was also moving. Millie's search for her birth mother, and the feelings that come from it were portrayed so realistically, and in a touching way.
Emma Lord has an amazing way of tackling important topics in an accessible way for young adults. I haven't found a book she has written yet that I haven't loved, and this was no exception!
Thank you so much to Macmillan Audio and to Macmillan publishing for providing me with an ARC of this book via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review!

Emma Lord has done it again! This book was SO GOOD I CAN'T EVEN HANDLE IT. If you enjoy heartfelt yet witty YA contemporary, you absolutely NEED to add this to your 2022 TBRs. This book was just so fun and current and sassy while also being just the right amount of serious and I am just so in love with it.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing this audiobook to me in exchange for an honest review!
