I enjoyed this domestic suspense read, centered on Sara, whose husband disappears when going to a weekend cabin with friends. Sara is a therapist who works mostly with teenagers and is navigating starting her own business while trying to renovate a house they inherited from her mother-in-law. Her husband Sigurd is an architect who works too much.
The mystery in the book was sound- not only trying to figure out what happened to Sigurd but also trying to figure out if Sara is a reliable narrator or not. The author does a great job at giving the reader a glimpse in to Sara’s head as she questions what she sees, hears, and remembers. There are also some genuinely creepy parts where Sara isn’t sure what level of danger she is actually in. I thought the dynamic with the police investigation worked well too- both the investigation and Sara’s conversations with the police felt authentic and the reader knew what was happening without the book going down the full police procedural route. Finding out what really happened was a surprise to me and I think it was a twist well done. I know some others didn’t like the end of the book but I thought it was clever and I was glad it ended that way.
Overall, this was an enjoyable read and a strong mystery. I also thought the translation to English was done extremely well. Thanks to Netgalley for proving me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A compelling story of how easy it could be to convince a mental health professional to question her actions. Each step is designed to have her question "did that really happen" then push it to the side. Reads as some of the vintage Alfred Hitchcock stories. My reading circle is going to love this one.
Thank you so much to Net galley and the publisher for sending me a copy of this book! I unfortunately DNF’d this book at 70%. It was just not for me.
This was a rollercoaster of a story! I loved every second off this book. The story keeps you focused on what comes next and the turns are very well done.
It was just okay, nothing too mesmerizing. I feel like I've read other books with this same premise (albeit different ending) this year so this book does not stick out as being memorable. It was enjoyable, it got me through the day reading it. I wouldn't rave about it but I'd recommend the read to others.
Waking up to what she thinks is a normal day. Sara, a therapist treats mainly children, gives her husband Sigurd a kiss goodbye. He is leaving for a guys weekend. He is to meeting his two friends, Thomas and Jan Erik at Thomas' cabin. Early in the day Sigurd leaves a voicemail on Sara's phone telling her he arrived at the cabin safe. Sara later gets a call from Jan Erik saying Sigurd never made it to the cabin. At first Sara thinks the guys are pranking her but as time goes on and she does not hear back from Sigurd, she realizes that he really is missing. Thanks NetGalley and the publisher for the advance ecopy.

Quite an interesting book with a few unexpected twists and turns. I usually love any domestic thriller that involves a psychologist. They normally involve an interesting twist and unreliable narrators (which I love). I am not one to try to guess the twists in books, I like to be taken where the story takes me. I am not a huge reader of the Nordic Noir genre, but I really enjoyed this one. I did find some parts (especially the beginning) to be dragging a little, where it felt as if we were looking into very mundane everyday tasks, but the storyline was interesting enough to keep me drawn in and invested.
This book was just ok to me. It was a rather slow burn that was a little difficult for me to get into.
When Sara's husband Sigurd leaves for a trip to a cabin with his buddies, he never makes it there. What happened to him? Then she starts feeling like she's being watched. You will have to read this to find out what happens. Just know that this is not a fast paced story.

I majored in Psychology when I was in college. So whenever I see a book and a thriller
much less about a Therapist and or Therapy. You know that I am in 100 percent! :)
3 stars! I read The Therapist in one sitting. I recommend this well-written psych thriller.
Thank you to Helene Flood, Mobius Books, and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The translation was a bit rough at times, but it was a great premise... I just did not care for that ending.
At first it's the lie that hurts.
A voicemail from her husband tells Sara he's arrived at the holiday cabin. Then a call from his friend confirms he never did.
She tries to carry on as normal, teasing out her clients' deepest fears, but as the hours stretch out, her own begin to surface. And when the police finally take an interest, they want to know why Sara deleted that voicemail.
To get to the root of Sigurd's disappearance, Sara must question everything she knows about their relationship.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story about Sarah and her husband Sigurd who turns out to be missing. Sarah’s life quickly starts to spiral and the police only seemed focused on placing guilt on her. Is she paranoid or is someone after her? Very entertaining read.
I literally couldn’t put this book down from the moment I picked it up. Everything was perfect. A therapist who works from home. Her husband is going on a guys trip. But. He never arrived. So where is he? And what other secrets will be uncovered? Honestly a little predictable but still a roller coaster of a ride. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is probably the 2459249835th time I fall for the mystery thriller book that has a good blurb but bad executions. I'm pretty much excited but then who will know such ending? I hate it. It's out of nowhere. Beware that this book is a translation, not originally written in English.

In Helene Flood's THE THERAPIST, Sara is a therapist operating a private practice for teenage patients out of her home. Her husband goes missing, then turns up dead. Who killed him and are they the one breaking into Sara's home?
Helene Flood crafted an interesting character with Sara - a lonely, unhappy therapist clearly in need of a therapist herself - and the scenes in which Sara is actually practicing demonstrate a great knowledge in psychology. I enjoyed the sparse language. I really enjoyed the flashbacks that traced her history with her husband, the evolution and slow ruin of their marriage. I thought the portrayal of shock a young widow like Sara would probably experience was well portrayed and explained some of the strange decisions Sara made that would otherwise make me side-eye her.
However, for a thriller, I found it rather lackluster. I guessed the primary twist in the opening chapter, so the reveal didn't land well, especially because the reader was forced to wait for that reveal until almost 80% of the way through the book. It simply wasn't as effective as it ought to have been. Sara so often goes into reflecting on the past and her childhood at length that there were portions I ended up skimming. The final twist at the very end was a bit surprising, but by then I felt so "eh" about the book that it didn't actually make me *feel* surprised.
By no means is it the worst thriller I've read and since I believe this is Flood's debut, I would still be inclined to pick up a book of hers in the future to see if her thriller crafting improves in the future. But I would only recommend this to people not especially well-versed with thrillers as it might fall a bit flat if you regularly read in this genre.
This started out very promising, but it just sort of lost steam for me. By the time I made it to the reveal, I had put this book down and picked it up several times, and honestly, just didn't care much anymore. Overall though, it was a good way to pass some reading time.
Nope. I had too high of expectations I guess. Thanks for letting me give this book a try. And for the ecopy in exchange for an honest review.
I thought this book was really good! Everything was so thought out, and the ending was really unexpected! I will definitely be recommending it to others.
This is a tough one- I think there may have been some things lost in translation since this book was not originally written in English. Sara’s character is a tough one to empathize with as she is pretty cold and I wouldn’t send my dog to get psychological treatment by her. This was really slow moving and at times so hard to stick with. The ending was ‘ok’ not my cup of tea.
