For the Throne by Hannah Whitten is a thrilling and enchanting read that is perfect for fans of dark fantasy and fairy tale retellings, particularly those who delight in the complex relationships between sisters and the struggle between light and darkness, as they embark on a perilous journey to save a beloved sibling and uncover the secrets of a mystical realm.
This was a fitting end to the this duology. I liked that while we were primarily in Neve’s POV that we still got Red’s POV and even a few other characters.
I absolutely love the world created in the Wilderwood series. I can’t wait to read both books again so I can be immersed in it all over again! I love the relationship between Red and Neve and felt the conflicts were so painful true of sisterhood. It was a dark and twisty epic and I loved every minute!!
3 stars!
After absolutely hating For the Wolf I was a little apprehensive about the sequel and although it was slightly better than the first book it was still not that great. I think there is something about this story and this writing and the characters that just doesn't do it for me, but I'm glad I like The Foxglove King more than this duet!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
For the Throne is a bit of a disjointed read, following the POVs of Neve, Red, and Rafe (but mostly Neve) directly after the events of For the Wolf. I never quite connected to the characters, and found the main (new) romance a bit abrupt, but it does tie up everything in a fairly satisfactory way.
Regretting not rereading the first one because I didn't remember much about it so I was really lost for awhile. I had the same issue with the first one as some parts of this were just super slow. I liked how there were chapters from Red's POV because it helped remind me why I liked the first book.
I absolutely adore Hannah Whitten's writing. She has such an enthralling and poetic voice and a wonderful way of crafting characters and romance, and I can't wait to see her career blossom. A worthy follow-up to one of my favorite books of 2021!
After reading the first book in this duology I went in cautiously. For The Crown was definitely captivating in its story and character building.
It just wasn’t the book for me.
I suggest you pick up a copy and read it for your self!
A good end to the duology. I liked the religious trauma that was discussed, but it did not go into it as much as the first book in the duology. I liked the characters and the pacing of the plot. That being said, I feel like the ending was convenient and too nicely wrapped up. The stakes did not feel high enough for me. I rated this three stars.
Did it take me forever to finally pick up the last book in this duology? 100%. Do I now regret that decision? 1000%. For the Wolf was a stunning opening to this duology and a shocking cliffhanger that makes you want to read the next book as soon as possible. Though easily distracted as I am it took me a bit to get back to this duology but I'm so happy I did. This was the perfect conclusion to this duology, was it as good as the first book? It was REALLY close! I enjoyed all of the POVs that we got and seeing how the sisters were working so hard to save each other and showing just how much they loved each other. This is definitely a duology that feels like one big book just happens to be split into two, so if you've read the first on you have to read the second, and if you haven't read either and love atmospheric, gothic vibes, fantasy, with some romance then this is a duology I'd highly recommend!
A solid conclusion to the Wilderwood duology. Though I enjoyed the first book more, I liked getting to know Neve better, as the first book was more focused on Red's story. Both sisters have very distinct personalities which made each of their POV chapters easy to follow.
I enjoyed this story. It was a good continuation of the first book in the duology, For the Wolf. I read that about a year ago, so some of the details were a bit fuzzy, but I was able to jump back into the story without too many problems.
I liked the characters, liked how the plot was a bit darker.
Overall, a good read and a good duology. I’d recommend it to others.
The First Daughter is for the Throne
The Second Daughter is for the Wolf...
Red and the Wolf have finally contained the threat of the Old Kings but at a steep cost. Red's beloved sister Neve, the First Daughter is lost in the Shadowlands, an inverted kingdom where the vicious gods of legend have been trapped for centuries and the Old Kings have slowly been gaining control. But Neve has an ally, though it's one she'd rather never have to speak to again: the rogue king Solmir.
Solmir wants to bring an end to the Shadowlands and he believes helping Neve may be the key to its destruction. But to do that, they will both have to journey across a dangerous landscape in order to find a mysterious Heart Tree, and finally to claim the gods' dark, twisted powers for themselves.

Thoughts : Your typical YA fantasy. Not my favorite but it's solid
Thank you Netgalley for the advanced copy!
This conclusion to the Wilderwood duology was very dark and very beautiful, and I think I liked it better than the first one? I loved how Whitten developed the gray areas of her characters. I can tell that her storytelling and writing has grown from the first book to the second, and I highly recommend this series.
This book for me was just as good as the first. The character development was there, the plot was exciting and the atmosphere was incredible for me. Need to get it on my shelf so I can reread by the fire this winter!
Not your average red riding hood story. One sister is for the throne and the other is for the wolf. Can the sisters find each other and live with the changing of the seasons? Or do they fight and get stuck in their assumptions of what the world will become now that they are separated.
If you like retellings you will like this one! YA but darker than normal YA books.
Everything came together so perfectly! Loved every minute of it. The dark balanace to the first book.
My favorite thing about this book is how it explored Neve and Red's sisterly relationship -- they weren't pitted against one another but rather went to whatever lengths to ensure the other's happiness. There was less romance in this book, which I missed from the first book. Overall, I think this was a great follow-up to For the Wolf and would recommend it.
3.5/5
A Massive Thank You to the Author, the Publisher and NetGalley for giving me the chance to read and review this book prior to its release date.
For the Throne by Hannah Whitten is the sequel to For the Wolf. I loved Red and Eamonn from For the Wolf so I was excited that we are given a decent amount of them in this one.
For the Throne focus's on Red's sister Neve and Solmir whose was once a king & god and very much a villain. Neve and Solmir's objective is to stop the group of evil kings inside the Shadowlands. They are both morally gray/ complicated characters whose romance has steam and chemistry.
Overall, For the Throne was a satisfying conclusion to the series. A YA fantasy retelling filled with magic, atmosphere, danger, romance, and the importance of sibling bonds.
