This was a good read. The suspense carried through without leaving the reader (or listener) feeling angsty. I would've liked more information about the removal of two of the characters - the reason for it is known, but the how is missing and I think sharing just a little detail about that could've added a bit more suspense. Interesting little twist right at the end that leaves you wondering and might have explained something about the two characters mentioned. I'd read more of this author's work. Thanks for the opportunity to review. 3.5 stars
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
3 stars
Five years ago, multiple families were killed in their homes. Five children escaped. Now they all receive letters threatening them.
While narration was very good, too many plot holes for me to enjoy the story.
3.5 stars
They are known as the Fallen Oaks Five. Five kids whose parents were brutally murdered in a residential community called Fallen Oaks. Five years later the survivors receive a death threat from the person(s) who killed their parents. What ensues is a race against time to figure out who killed their parents and why before they become the next victims.
This was a super quick read that was both suspenseful and entertaining. The plot raced along at breakneck speed. The reveal was surprising and the pieces all fit together at the end. The audio version was solid and the narrator delivered an engaging and believable performance. The story as a whole was good but was similar to other thrillers I’ve read - nothing out of the ordinary.
I loved this author’s last book The Arrangement. This one didn’t quite live up to that one but still recommend it to others. Thank you to OrangeSky Audio and Netgalley for an advanced audio copy in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoy Kierstens books as they are quick reads, fast paced, and something is always happening. I read this in one setting. I did give it two stars because I found it to be predicable.
I did like the audiobook narrator! I was not confused and could keep up while listening to 2x speed!
I saw the first line and it had me hooked. It was a quick and ok read. Did not turn me off from author. I feel that it had the potential for more
Thanks Netgalley for this ARC.
Thank you Netgalley for providing me an audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
It is more of a 3.5* rating for me.
This is my second book by Kiersten Modglin, and she has an incredible way of writing twisted stories.
Like the previous book I have read, this did not shy away from making the story incredibly twisted. But the motives of the killer towards the end felt like such a stretch.
Overall, I would still continue reading from the author, I think she has so much potential.
Excellent read! The story came out of the gates with a bang and really held my attention throughout. I loved the character development and really felt for the characters especially Ellie and Margaret. The storyline took several unexpected turns but the main twist was really shocking. I also loved the cliffhanger ending and hope that means there is more to come!
When a whole town is mysteriously murdered and only 5 of them, all being kids, survive you know things are going to get crazy! Twist upon twist, The Lucky Ones had me intrigued from the very beginning.
Each chapter there was more information and clues sprinkled in as the characters returned to their hometown in search of their parents killer. This allowed me to be able to start speculating on my own to find out if I could solve the cold case first!
The big twist in the last few chapters were predictable, but had enough added within that I didn’t see it coming. At the very end, Modglin leaves you hanging on the biggest cliff in search or more clarity and closure to the story.
I would love to read this in a different format, as I think I would follow the twists better (yay for being a visual learner)!
I have binged Modglin's works throughout 2021 and was really excited to get this ALC - thank you Netgalley and Orange Sky Audio!
Unfortunately, I think once you've read a few of her books, you can pretty much predict how they all will go. She is a very talented writer, but her newest ones feel so incredibly formulaic and predictable. I miss the days of her earlier works where my mind was absolutely blown with twists, turns and unique plot twists.
This was fine - not bad, not great.
Kiersten Modglin is one of my new favorite authors. There were 5 children of the Gerbera subdivision that survived the murders. Known as The Fallen Oaks Five, they dispersed and did not have any contact with each other. That is until they all receive letters as the anniversary of their families death arrives. Together they return to the town that wrecked their lives to try and piece together the events and find discover who the murderers are that are now after them.
The narration of this book was excellent. Easy listen!
While this was not my favorite of this authors, I will definitely be back from more!
I was excited for a new Kiersten Modglin book but unfortunately this one wasn't for me... That's not to say I didn't enjoy the book, I just wasn't a huge fan of the storyline.
I feel like it was a little predictable, but also very redundant. I wasnt a huge fan of the characters and didn't find myself as invested in them as I normally would.
I will most definitely still be picking up Kiersten Modglin in the future - but this one missed the mark.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the advance audio book listen!
Modglin is know for stacking twist upon twist in her mysterious novels and The Lucky One’s is no exception. After an entire subdivision is killed off in one night with only five children surviving the questions surrounding this horrific event are endless. The Fallen Oak five, as they become known, are intriguing and engaging characters that help readers unravel the mystery around that mysterious night five years ago. While readers are sure to enjoy the thrilling ride in my opinion Modglin pushes this envelope a tad to far with her final Chapter and twist in this otherwise enjoyable novel.
3.5 Stars for this interesting read with an unsatisfactory ending
The story begins with the night that a slaughter occurred in a neighborhood, killing all the residents except for 4 teenagers and 1 young child. We go on to follow Ellie and her sister Cassie, 2 of the 5 survivors. But, when all 5 survivors receive letters, saying that “they” are coming back to finish the job, they team together and return to their hometown and the site where their subdivision once stood. As the story continues, we learn about how their lives were tuned upside down when their families were murdered and how they are always looking over their shoulders. They find a woman and child in the woods behind where their subdivision once stood, and the woman tells them all about what happened that night and who she claims murdered their families. The survivors are told to stay away from the police, that they can’t be trusted. And so, they return home, hoping that they will be safe away from their old town. But they aren’t safe anywhere…
I was hooked on this book from the very beginning. The very first chapter drew me in, and the fast pace of the story kept me engaged. I enjoy Kiersten Modglin’s writing style and find that she adds just the right amount of detail to understand, but not so much that you get bogged down with too much information. The story was quick and very enjoyable.
I listened to this as an audiobook and enjoyed listening to the narrator, Linda Jones.
A huge thank you to NetGelley, OrangeSky Audio, and Kiersten Modglin for allowing me to listen to this ARC. It has been provided to me in exchange for my honest review.
This was a fantastic audiobook, finished in a matter of days, even though I was working!
As my first introduction to the author, I will definitely be looking for more from her in the future.
The pacing and suspense was constant, and I feared for the characters throughout. The twists were relentless, even to the last page, although I did have to listen to the ending again to properly make sense of it.
There were a lot of characters, with all the children of the deceased parents to keep track of, and then added to that their relatives that accompanied them along the way too.
I did figure out some of the ending- the 'who' but not the 'why', and it was the 'why' that I loved! It was really well thought out!

Are you ever really safe? Can you truly start over after your parents are murdered? I loved this book. A great fast paced thrill ride to start the New year with.
I really wanted to love this one, the premise as great and I am fan of Kiersten Modglin; however, this one missed the mark for me. I didn’t feel excited at any point and I didn’t care enough about any of the characters to root for any of them, which I feel is strange after everything they’d been though. I just wasn’t invested and that’s a huge part of my attraction to her books, I’m hooked pretty quickly but this one just didn’t get there for me.
I enjoyed this story but it didn't grab my attention like her other books. There is a few twists and it's a messed up story on what happened to the kids.
This book was a major flop, and that's so unfortunate because I typically really enjoy KMod.
The beginning had promise; it started explosive and strong, and the story seemed pretty interesting. That was the only good part of this book.
The characters were SO AWFUL. I hated every single one. No one reacted appropriately or even acted like normal humans. The situations were so unbelievable and unrealistic. I didn't like the narrator, either.
I like KMod, but just skip this one.
Thank you for an advanced audio copy of Kiersten Modglin's latest book. This book started out with a bang but I felt like it kind of went downhill from there. It was a quick book to listen to and the narration was good. I think that it was just a bit hard to follow up The Arrangement which I loved so much. I do think that Kiersten is a talented writer and that many will enjoy this book. This one just was not my favorite I have read of hers.
I just got really addicted to this audio and needed to know what happened. The ending oh wow perfect.
The narration was brilliant.
I am off to investigate more by both this author and narrator.
I was given an advance copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own
