I am honored the have gotten a sneak peek of this book.
I like how immediately the author throws you into the story. From the sample read, it is well written and the story itself is very intriguing. Looking forward to buying a copy of this book so that I can immerse myself fully in the world of the akata witch.

Somehow I thought the sneak peek of Akata Witch would have more to it. I wasn't overly impressed with the brevity of this, and I don't think most people would be able to base whether or not they wanted to pick the book up. The actual book tends to be polarizing on reviews.

I really enjoyed this sneak peak of Akata Witch! I had heard of this series before, but this sampler was my first experience with the work. From the world-building to magic system, I felt enthralled and absolutely plan to continue reading to find out what happens next! Thank you to Nnedi Okorafor, Penguin Group, and Netgalley for a free sneak peek in exchange for honest feedback.

The first 2 chapters were interesting. The surroundings were easy to imagine. I'm interested in finding out what Sunny and her friends do and if Sunny becomes a better person.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the sneak peek.

I didn't read anything about this book before I was fortunate enough to read a sampler on Netgalley, and it blew me away! In less than 50 pages there was so much depth, and such vivid storytelling that I was hooked and now need to read the whole thing!

Sunny's various differences to those around her were really interesting, but not necessarily a core element of the plot, it was great to have albinism represented in this way as well to read about a culture and mysticism that is completely unfamilar to me, while still relating whole-heartedly to Sunny and her struggles.

I really hope I get to read the whole book and any that follow it, and will update my review if I get to do so...

I received a free eARC from the author/publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This sampler of Akata witch has me completely hooked. It's about an American born Nigerian girl called Sunny who has albinism. I felt immediately drawn to Sunny's character, and the hints of Nigerian culture and mythology (I don't mean to say that those beliefs are not real by using the term, I use it in the broad sense of stories about gods and spirits). I'm looking forward to getting my hands on a copy of the whole book!

Net Galley provided me a sampler of Akata Witch by Nnedi Okoroafor. This is a story about a child named Sunny in Nigeria. “Akata” means bush animal, but Sunny does not look like those around her. Sunny is Albino and was born in America. She is teased for being different. Orlu and Chichi. Orlu can perform “juju” more precisely can undo bad “juju”. The book sounds like it will be very exciting.

SNEAK PEEK: Akata Witch
by Nnedi Okorafor
a look into Nigerian legends and history with a science fiction twist. Not only do the characters have traits of Nigerian culture, but they are affected by social prejudice and extreme internal conflict

Sunny is twelve years old. When her teacher gave Sunny high praise on her essay. Her classmates are scolded and yelled at about their poorly written essays by the teacher. The teacher was so angry, she marched Sunny up to the front of the room giving Sunny a switc to punish the classmates. Will she do it? After school, Sunny is beaten by her classmates. Why? As she walks home, a classmate Orlu joins her. Is Orlu her friend?

With this sneak peek I became totally absorbed in the story. I liked meeting Sunny, Orlu and Chichi. They are fascinating characters. There is a mystery in why they are now connected to ac other. I wan to know what is going to happen — what adventures and secrets will they discover? It’s so hard to wait for the book to be published. . . . I need more o read!

This sneak peek of Akata Witch was mind-blowing, and it was just the first 48 pages. A very mystic book perfect for YA, the subject matter in those initial 48 pages with situations at school makes you hold on to your chest but appropriate for YA ages. I found this sneak peek more than interesting and I am ecstatic to purchase and read the book in its entirety. Phenomenal writing by Nnedi Okorafor.

This sampler did the job and made me want to IMMEDIATELY read the entire book. Engaging characters, interesting magic, and a hook of a plot twist at the end of the sampler. Very fun!

Thanks Netgalley for the intrigue.

I downloaded a sample of this book from NetGalley and read through it in about 10 minutes. During which I was immediately interested in reading the whole thing. Thankfully, my library had a copy.

I really enjoyed this first book in the Akata Witch series, a middle-grade novel that is filled with Nigerian mythology and magic. The main character is a 12-year-old albino Nigerian American girl who was born in NYC, but whose parents recently moved back to Nigeria because they thought it would be a safer environment for her. Besides being albino, she stands out in other ways--she's a gifted soccer player who is not allowed to play soccer because "girls don't play soccer", she is bullied not just because of her albinism, but also because she's from America. They call her Akata, which literally means wild animal because of this. But she also believes that girls should be able to do anything they want to do, in a society that is very patriarchal and where women are treated more as property meant to serve their master (husband).

But Sunny starts to realize that she's not like the other kids in another very important way when she sees a vision of the end of the world in a candle and she learns about the spiritual realm and about magic where the magic users are Leopards and the non-magic users (meant to kept ignorant about the magical world) are known as sheep (aka muggles, lol).

I loved watching Sunny develop self-confidence especially as she finds her voice to speak up, and I totally cheered when she spoke up against her father. I found the story engrossing and while I thought I might have some trouble with the unfamiliar mythologies, that ended up not being the case and I ended up reading this in a day. It helped that I heard names that I recognized like Mama Wata (from Tristan Strong and a few other middle school books I've been reading lately), and I loved learning more about the myths and magic of Nigeria. I have seen some documentaries about Nigeria and how women and girls have been historically treated (especially child marriage), so it was great to see a strong female protagonist in this modern Nigeria where magic is real.

This promises to be an excellent series from an author I was unfamiliar with and I'm glad the third book in this series is going to be released in the next few months. I'll be jumping right into the second book.

A middle grade/young adult novel with magical elements. Although I received just a sample, it has peeked my curiosity.

I am invested in the characters, already. Now, I must get the complete book!
