As I flipped through the pages of this sweet picture book, I couldn't help but smile at the clever and imaginative ways the young girl insists she doesn't have a dog. From comparing her furry friend to an alarm clock to a homework excuse, each page is filled with whimsical charm and genuine affection for our canine companions.
The illustrations beautifully capture the playful spirit of the story, bringing to life the antics of the girl and her lovable "not-a-dog" in vibrant detail. Whether you're a dog owner or simply a fan of heartwarming tales, this book is sure to warm your heart and bring a smile to your face.
"I Don't Have a Dog" is more than just a children's book—it's a celebration of the unconditional love and joy that dogs bring into our lives. It's a reminder to cherish the special bond we share with our furry friends and appreciate the unique ways they enrich our days.
I highly recommend "I Don't Have a Dog" to anyone looking for a heartwarming read that celebrates the magic of friendship and the love between a child and their beloved pet. It's a story that will resonate with readers young and old, reminding us all of the joy and companionship that comes with having a furry best friend by our side.
The perfect little book for a young dog lover. Great illustrations and a lovely little story. Relatable for a child and to show the friendship between pet and owner. Very cute.
I love this book! I love that it teaches kids to look at things differently and see what they can be besides the obvious.
A companion book to I Don't Have A Cat, this book follows a little girl and how she seems to have everything but a dog. My daughter loved the colorful illustrations which kept her attention. A cute and charming little story for dog lovers.
Thank you Netgalley and Sasquatch Books/Little Bigfoot for the opportunity to read this book.
This is a companion book to "I Don't Have a Cat" and being a dog lover, I have to say I enjoyed this one more. The young girl in this story has a pet dog, but he is more than that. With repetitive phrasing of "I don't have a dog, I have..." we see all the things dogs are known for, but assigned a job such as: an alarm clock, dishwasher, security system, garbage disposal, sidekick etc. We also see all the not so fun things about dogs, like bad breath, snoring, barking etc. but it ends with statement, I don't have a dog, I have a best friend, exactly how I felt about all my dogs over the years.
This was a cute book showing how a a dog is viewed differently through the eyes of someone who loves them. The repetitive nature of the text is great for little ones and would make a great story to read to develop vocabulary. I found there was more to this book than the one about cats, which I liked. The illustrations by Carolyn Conahan are cute. They are large and colourful, with action and emotion. They give great picture clues for the text. I definitely recommend this book to dog lovers.
I love a good picture book. One that has illustrations to help tell the story the author is trying to tell. I'm rather picky when it comes to picture books because I'm an elementary school librarian. I have students as young as 3 and all the way through 8th grade. I would absolutely share this charming story with my students. I actually think this book could be shared throughout my entire school. My youngest readers would love the story, the illustrations and the message. My older readers, yes even my middle schoolers would enjoy this and then be challenged to write their own I Don't Have a ____ story. I really think they would love the challenge.
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
As a dog lover, this book had me smiling the whole time! Dogs really add so much to our lives! They are our friends in so many ways!
This delightful book is for dog lovers and certainly readers will concur with the antics of the spunky little mutt in the story.
A sweet unnamed little girl explains to the reader why she doesn't have a dog. She labels him as her security system, garbage disposal, alarm clock and homework excuse ( just to name a few) ... but NOT her dog!
Any dog owner will attest to the fact that a dog is NOT a dog but a beloved family member, a faithful best friend and their dogs are cherished unconditionally in their hearts. The illustrations are beautifully done and enrich the text greatly. The author wraps up the whole premise of the book in the last sentence.
"So please don't ask me if you can pet my dog...I don't have a dog. I have a best friend."
Being an avid dog owner myself I end my review by saying... Amen to that! I love the book and highly recommend it.
This book sums up very well how much more a dog is than a dog. As long as you understand what I mean by that, this is a book for you. I’m looking forward to gifting this one to every dog lover in my life. Maybe I’ll even read it to my two not-dogs.
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
I Don't Have a Dog is such a sweet, illustrated picture book for children about their special friend - their pet. Children with a pet, especially a dog, will love this book. This is such a fun and relatable book and shows just how special having a dog can be, especially for children. In this book, the girl says all the things her dog is, such as an alarm clock, a hoover and her number one fan and I loved the last sentence of the book being that she doesn't have a dog, she has a best friend. Such a beautiful book!
Thanks to NetGalley and Contessa Hileman to provide me this advanced copy...
This is a really cute story, it's narrated by him. he said his dog is not only a dog. the book tells us a big important to do with animals, without being truculent with them
4.0
This adorable book from Contessa Hileman explores all the important roles a dog plays in a young child's life — and some of the silly ones, too.
I could see curling up at bedtime and using this story to reflect on all the reasons you are thankful for your family's furriest member, even if he sometimes barks too much. The illustrations are cute, depict a loving family with two active parents, and show a diverse community.
'I don't have a dog' follows a young boy, and the adventures he has with his dog. The story, put it bluntly, is repetitive and boring.
My opinion as a trainee teacher is that I wouldn't try to use this in a classroom, no matter the age range. I would recommend this for children aged 4 and below, particularly for family story-time, and the illustrations are lovely.
Rated 1.5 stars
Thank you to netagllery for allowing me to read this adorably drawn book
I DON’T HAVE A DOG by Contessa Hileman is a children’s story book focusing on a young girl who is telling the reader she doesn’t have a dog but she does have a ‘best friend’ who is her sidekick, garbage disposal, homework excuse etc.
Similar to the author’s I DON’T HAVE A DOG, the images are colorful and fun; the text is simple enough for a young reader or a young child’s bedtime story.

If you’ve ever been a dog’s human, you’ll relate to the many roles this girl’s best friend fulfils. Her best friend is, amongst other things, her alarm clock, taste tester and fan club.
My best friend growing up was many of these things but she was also my confidante, protector and a superhero. While my Halloween costumes changed throughout the years, I was always accompanied by Superdog. I guess it’s no surprise then that my favourite illustration in this book (also the cover image) involves a sidekick, complete with flowing cape.
Carolyn Conahan’s illustrations are adorable and made me nostalgic.
Keep an eye out for the girl’s younger sibling, who helps demonstrate the dog’s powers as a vacuum cleaner.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and Little Bigfoot, an imprint of Sasquatch Books, for the opportunity to read this picture book.
Thanks to the publishers for sharing this one. The illustrations are beautiful! My full review appears on Weekend Notes.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing an early release of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I read this one to my 6 year old son and he was cracking up at all of the ways the dog wasn't a dog.
It was a silly and very short book, which he really enjoyed. I have fun reading it to him.
The illustrations were cute and the ending was adorable....you can't pet his dog, because it's not a dog, it's his best friend.
Perfect for families with young, dog loving kids.
Thank you to the author, Sasquatch Books and NetGalley, for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This children's book with great illustrations is by the same team that did "I Don't Have a Cat". A young girl shares all the things she loves about her dog. Yes, in contrast to the title, she does have a dog - and makes great use of expressive language to talk about all the fun they have together. The young kids I read this with were engaged and enjoyed its humor - and I found it a great conversation starter about pets and responsibility, as well as using expressive language.
Thank you to the Sasquatch Books and NetGalley for the advanced electronic review copy of this fun book. This book is very similar to the “I Don’t Have a Cat” one. The only difference is that here the main character is a girl and her dog instead of a boy and his cat in the previous book. This book is just as adorable and fun and is great to share with any pet lovers.
I'm in love with this book. Corny as it sounds, I read it aloud to my own dog Daisy, who was sprawled across my legs as I read. Excuse me, no, I don't have a dog. I have a leg warmer. I wanted to get a feel for the rhythm as it might be when read aloud. At least that's my excuse.
I have a hunch both children and parents or whoever might be reading will stop to "Oh" and "Ah" over the illustrations as they go along. They are humorously adorable and something new is likely to catch your eye every time you go through the book. I'm betting that will be frequently. Not only did I love the humor in the pix, but that the author and illustrator chose to showcase pet rescue at one point, the one where the girl and her "business partner", wearing a pink tutu no less, dance for donations. Another one that not only hit home with me but made me chuckle and disrupt my leg warmer's rest was the furry security alarm. That dang squirrel looks about as impressed with the alarm as mine does. Thus, from an adult owned by her do....er, lap warmer, security alarm, moose alert (we live in Alaska), and more, this book is a charming hit.
From the retired teacher in me, although it's been years since I've dealt with the age level this book is aimed at, it is full of positives, too. The drawings are simple but detailed enough to draw a child into the action with little things like the squirrel and cat leaping off the couch to catch their eye. There is also the repetition of the phrase "I don't have a dog". When children are learning to master reading, repetition is vital and this repetition, partnered with adorable drawings that illustrate each bit of action should help the child gain confidence. The colors used in the illustrations, too, are basic colors and could be used for "What do you see that is red?", say. "What is different between these people?" "Why might the father be wearing a cap?" Many little things that combined can lead to a reading not just being plain ol' fun, which it is, but aid the process of learning. I'm sure there are elementary teachers who can add to my comments but just wanted to note that it's more than just a simple, cute story. After all, it's like dogs, who "are so much more."
My Daisy, aka the leg warmer, rates this one four paws up and several enthusiastic tail wags. Thank you #NetGalley and #SasquatchBooks and #LittleBigfoot for the smile and chuckle this lovely book brought to my heart. Now I think I'll go give Daisy some serious ear and belly rubs.
