I really enjoyed this one. It has everything that a YA murder mystery should have: female detectives, lots of plot twists, and complex characters. I did feel like there were sometimes too many obvious red herrings, but overall, it was a really engaging read!
The Agathas is a hit! The plot is expertly woven and complex. The characters are authentic and well developed. I recommend this book to fellow mystery lovers- adults and teens!
This book is SO GOOD! It's the perfect YA mystery with great characters, awesome plot and twist, and kept me reading! I'm getting multiple copies of this for my classroom and may even use it for small group readings.
A solid 4-star read! The plot was well-paced, the characters weren't completely predictable, and the ending was satisfying. Dare we hope for a series here?
This was a fun whodunnit that is great for YA audiences. It kept you guessing until the very end and it certainly leaves things open for future investigations by “The Agatha’s”. My one criticism is the lexicon of some of the teenagers was not terribly realistic. I don’t know many modern teens who say “by gum” or “mother-sucker!”
his is a super fun read! When Brooke Donovan goes missing it seems as if everyone else has kind of given up on finding her. So, her estranged friend decides to use the renowned Agatha Christies Methods to find her! If you love Agatha Christies novels, then you will love this novel! There are twists and turns that will have anyone on the edge of their seats!
So, we start off this book with Alice, a young heiress who went missing for a week. Then when she comes back it’s as if she had the plague. Her friends turned their backs on her. Her Boyfriend Steve had broken up with her and started dating Brooke.
Then our next viewpoint was Iris, and she is a quiet bookish girl from the other side of town. Soon she inevitably starts becoming Alice’s tutor even knowing about her social status. Then they realize that they were probably the last people to see Brooke at a high school party!
Now, the two start investigating, and boy was this a wild ride! I loved that the authors alternated the viewpoints and chapters. This was a definite amazing ride!
If you are looking for an amazing mystery with a different style of writing this should be your next read! Thank you Netgalley and Delacorte Press for the extraordinary opportunity to read and review this one!
Who killed Brooke Donovan? Disgraced popular girl Alice Ogilve and unpopular Iris Adams form an unlikely alliance. The people of their small town may be willing to jump at the first possible suspect, but Alice and Iris are determined to discover the true killer.
The Agathas is an entertaining, slow burn YA mystery. With the help of Iris' misfit friends, the two amateur detectives expose secrets and face danger as they work through a long list of potential suspects.. The Agatha Christie references were a definite plus! I look forward to the next book in this series.
Note, this overall lighthearted read does address some serious issues.
This book has been a good surprise.
I was very curious from the plot and I haven't been disappointed.
The story is appealing and it urges the reader to keep reading until the end, with a pace that increases itself as the plot goes on. The characters are interesting (even the secondary ones) and not the usual "easy" type to like. They have flaws, they do and say wrong things the majority of the time, but you end up getting attached to them.
That said, some plot twists and solutions were a little bit too obvious and that lowered my satisfaction, but I can't wait to read another adventures of this "investigation team" and to know more about some questions the story lefts open.
So, it has ben an enjoyable reading, but I think the author could work more on some aspects to be perfect!

I loved this! All of the #agathachristie references filled me with joy, and it’s focused on 2 of my favorite character archetypes & the general concept that people contain multitudes. I really loved the way the author built the friendship between the protagonists, and the nuanced exploration of the way it’s possible to both love & hate someone.
⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️. 💫 rounded to 5!
thank you so much @prhaudio @netgalley @randomhousechildrens & @delacortepress for the eArc & gifted audio copy (it’s great!).
A girl disappears without a trace and it has turned into the towns biggest mystery. Iris is determined to find the missing girl, collect the money and get out of her small town. The Agathas seamlessly combine teen pressures with the classic Agatha Christie mystery feel. Glasgow captures the essence of Christie's novels and infuses teen rebellion and issues.
Okay, this was a HIT - Karen McManus & Holly Jackson, we’ve got another amazing YA mystery writer joining the ranks! I seriously loved everything about this smart, zippy murder mystery - the female friendships, the Agatha Christie call-outs & parallels, the Scooby-Doo group vibes - it was amazing. This one was fairly long for its genre, but I still inhaled it within 48 hours - the writing, short chapters, and shifting perspectives all helped it fly by. I had a (correct) guess about the murderer at around 60%, but instead of being annoyed at figuring it out early, I was I just impressed at how well the authors set up this story. I’m thrilled that this is going to be a series, and can’t wait to see what’s next to come for Alice, Iris & the rest of the crew! My thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a chance to read an early copy.
CW: domestic abuse, dating violence
I’m a big fan of Agatha Christie and mysteries in general. Nods to Christie were fun but some of the choices of Alice and Iris were off putting.
I LOVE Kathleen Glasglow and at this point will read anything she puts out and this did not disappoint! It was such a great nod to Agatha Christie and such a unique concept to use a murder mystery to solve a mystery! I lost it when i found out this is a SERIES! I am so excited for it continue!
In The Agathas, Agatha Christie fan Alice Ogilvie, pulls her own disappearance stunt (much like Christie's) after her boyfriend Steve dumps her for her BFF Brooke Donovan. Hoping to gain sympathy and her neglectful parents' attention, Alice sees her plan backfire when she returns after 5 days and becomes a social pariah. When Brooke disappears after a party where she is seen fighting with Steve, Alice teams up with her peer tutor Iris Adams to solve the case. Alice and Iris co-narrate the story and each chapter begins with a quote from an Agatha Christie mystery. With many twists and turns, the mystery unravels as the teen sleuths solves clues and narrow down the suspect list until the exciting denouement.
With frequent nods to the Queen of Mystery, Agatha Christie, this YA thriller has a fast pace and well developed, believable characters. I enjoyed the realistic dialogue and true depictions of teen angst. Following a previous disappearance of a local teen girl who was hoping to make a point, another teen girl goes missing. The fact that people assumed she was just being a copycat was infuriatingly real, and I liked the not too subtle poke at people who assume that teen girls are overly simple and emotional. The girls in this book are smart, resourceful and caring. Overall, a good read that shows how tough it can be for adults to believe that teens know the truth about things.
I enjoyed the overall mystery and the references to Agatha Christie novels! I couldn’t guess who was the killer so I enjoyed finding out who it was at the end. I wasn’t super interested in any of the characters but it was an enjoyable YA mystery I think lots of people would like!
**4.5-stars rounded up**
A year ago, high school it-girl, Alice Ogilve, disappeared in the wake of a nasty break-up with her boyfriend, Steve. At the time it was considered a very suspicious disappearance. The whole town of Castle Cove was put on alert. A massive search began for her as it was feared that Alice may have been a victim of something terrible.
Like one of her idols, Dame Agatha Christie, Alice ultimately returned home, but she wasn't talking. She never told anyone where she had been, what had happened to her, or really why she had left in the first place. Now once popular Alice is a social outcast, watching from the sidelines as her ex-best friend, Brooke Donovan, dates her ex-boyfriend Steve. Ugh, what a mess.
After a party, Brooke and Steve are seen arguing and Brooke storms off into the night. None of her friends go after her. The next day it is reported that Brooke never made it home. She's disappeared. Has she pulled an Alice Oglive, or is something more sinister at work?
Once again the town of Castle Cove is in an uproar. Another young girl missing. Everyone has opinions. Unfortunately, Brooke doesn't remain missing for long. She's been killed. After being notified, Brooke's wealthy grandmother swoops in, offering a hefty reward to anyone able to determine what happened to Brooke.
Alice pairs up with her teen tutor, Iris Adams, along with a small group of her misfit friends, to try to get to the bottom of the mystery surrounding Brooke's tragic death. Alice isn't in it for the money, but Iris certainly wouldn't turn it away.
Steve is taken into custody, the police feel he's the guy, but Alice knows that isn't true. She knows Steve couldn't kill someone. In order to prove his innocence and secure the reward money, they need to find the real killer, thus an investigation begins.
The Agathas is such a solid and fun YA Mystery. I love when teens turn into full-fledged amateur investigators and this fit that bill perfectly. The friend group that ultimately assembles itself around Alice was so sweet. She went from being the super popular girl, to an outcast, to finally finding a new place.
As far as the mystery portion goes, I thought it was really well done. The investigation was great. The girls were huge fans of mystery and true crime novels and television shows, so they incorporated a lot of what they had learned from those into their investigation.
The vibe of this reminded me a bit of [book:A Good Girl's Guide to Murder|40916679] and I was loving every minute of it. If you enjoyed that one, you should absolutely check this one out.
Also, I loved how this one ended. I am hoping, as determined from the closing paragraphs, that Kathleen Glasgow and Liz Lawson aren't finished with this set of characters yet. There are more mysteries to solve in Castle Cove.
Thank you so much to the publisher, Delacorte, for providing me with a copy to read and review. I loved this and can't wait for more from this author duo!
This is a fun, twisty murder mystery that stands out in the YA thriller sphere. The writing jumps off the page, and the dual narrative works perfectly. Great twists, great prose, great characters.
This was a great mystery YA novel. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters, the plot kept me interested and I didn’t see the criminal coming. A story about two teens from two different backgrounds coming together to find a killer. When the police wouldn’t do a thorough investigation, they took matters into their own hands. One of my favorite genres. Thank you Netgalley for the ARC.
Alice goes missing for five days after her boyfriend dumps her for her best friend. I love the call out to the days that Agatha Christie herself went missing.
Alice comes back obsessed with Agatha Christie novels. She needs to catch up on her school work and Iris needs the tutoring money. But Alice's best friend (the one her boyfriend left her for) goes missing too and Alice has suspicions. Cue the unlikely partnership. I love the Iris-Alice sleuth duo.
Agatha Christie is my comfort read, so this was right up my alley.
It was a quick, fun, fairly predictable read. Perfect for fans of A Good Girl's Guide to Murder, One of us is Lying.
