Unfortunately the main twist to this story has been used in a number of books I’ve read recently. Perhaps if it hadn’t been obvious to me after the first few chapters where it was heading I’d have been more involved in the story. Having said that it was an easy read and others have found it an exciting novel.
Here For You by Nora Valter.
Jess’s life is back on track again: the messy divorce, bitter inheritance feud, and terrifying home invasion are well and truly behind her. After two years abroad, she is excited for a new beginning in a sleepy English seaside town where nobody knows her. So when Jess is attacked in the street, she thinks it’s rotten luck – her troubles are firmly in the past, after all. But, as more creepy things start to happen, she becomes convinced she’s being targeted.
As the frightening events escalate, Jess is certain someone she thought she’d left behind has finally caught up with her – and they want revenge. But who? And just how far will they go to push her over the edge and into oblivion?
A brilliant read. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I loved Jess character. She was my favourite. 5*.
This novel begins with Jess in a new town at a new shared co-working space awkwardly introducing herself to everyone during one of their Friday night socials. As she nurses her beer, she looks around the room trying to figure out who to socialize with but is quickly saved when sweet, bubbly Ashley comes over to introduce herself. Later, the two women are drunkenly walking home, go their separate ways, and Jess is attacked. Who comes to her rescue? Ashley, of course. And the rest of the book is predictable as hell from there forward.
The main premise to this novel is the question – is Jess losing her mind or is she being gaslighted by literally everyone else in her life? Jess is a very unreliable narrator because she completely lacks any self-esteem or confidence, only shares tiny bits of her past, and later her recollections of the past don’t match those of others. So who do you believe?
Some positives of the book are the author’s character development and imagery. The way she described each character’s expression, tones, and even eye movements made the characters leap off the page. I also loved the setting and descriptions of the town down to the arcade and the yummy food Jess and Ashley would get while out and about having fun.
However, the overall novel was just a complete miss for me because it was so incredibly predictable. From about 10% in, I realized what was going on. Yes, I had to build on it as the novel progressed, but there was literally only 1 surprise throughout the novel and it was so silly and out of left field that it wasn’t an enjoyable surprise. I’m not sure what could have been better because this plot seems overdone anyway, but this lacked all of the things I love about thrillers – anticipation, surprise, questions, and twists.
I will certainly give this author another try because there were several things I enjoyed about her writing, however, Here For You is not a book that I would recommend.
*Thanks to NetGalley for providing this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
I really struggled with this novel. It was a page turner for sure, but my primary motivation was just to get through it. I hate to DNF, but I was nearly there.
The dialog seemed juvenile and odd, not the way I'd expect adults to speak to one another. "OMG!" "They're out to get me!" etc.
The main character is unlikeable, which isn't typically an issue for me but I found myself exhausted by her. What person, with a history of trauma and PTSD, moves in with not one, but two complete strangers.... I can suspend my belief when warranted but the entire story is filled with hard to accept plot points and exchanges.
Blake, the ex husband, and Tim, the brother, are inordinately cruel, spitting vitriol at Jess for no real reason. It just felt thrown in there for shock value. Overall, the story lacks character development, believability, and after all the chaos, the ending is too wrapped up in a neat little bow for my tastes. Just wasn't for me.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I struggled to get into this story and then I couldn't stand Jess. I felt like this story has been told so many tines before and I could easily predict "the big twist" at the end. Not my cup of tea, I guess.
wow could not put this down, never read one of hers before but would def read again. Thanks Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to review
Here for You is a psych thriller that keeps you guessing, right up until the very end. There is a lot to like in it.
The main character, Jess, is a bit of an enigma. There is obviously a dark history – she refers to it often – but the reader doesn’t find out the full extent of it until late in the book.
What is clear about her, however, is that she is timid and mousy. Part of it could just be her normal demeanor, but it is also due to events in her past.
In other words, she is a perfect victim for the plot that unfolds against her.
There are just enough hints dropped throughout the first two thirds of the book that the reader knows there is something nefarious unfurling – but the full extent of it is not clear until the author is ready for it to be.
And when that happens, hold on, because everything happens very fast.
One of the things I liked about Here for You is that I felt almost as manipulated as Jess. It was easy to see things from her side and feel like it was happening to me too.
That being said, there were also times that Jess was too needy or mousy. But I suppose that it is a necessary characteristic for everything else to work.
Whenever something seems too easy as a plot point, I am suspicious. And that occurred often in this book. But again, it was sometimes difficult to tell if it was me being too skeptical or if everything was playing out as it was supposed to.
I also thought that the author was a bit too cagey at times. The repeated references to what happened to Jess in the past started to get annoying. The info could have been released a little bit sooner and more sporadically. But that is a minor gripe.
Everything comes full circle in the end, and all questions are answered. It is nice when a story wraps up in a satisfying manner.
All in all, Here for You is a decent psych thriller – and not a bad way to kick off the new year!
I enjoyed Here For You. It kept my interest throughout with plenty of suspense, twists and turns to keep me guessing and I read it in one sitting.
Thank you to NetGalley and Inkubator Books for my ARC.
I tried to enjoy this one, but to no avail. It just seems too much along the lines of other plots from the thrillers I have read recently and the theme is just overdone. It did read quickly though.
If you would want to start over in a new place, would you trust anyone anymore? Especially when people find out you are worth more than you show it up?
I enjoyed the suspenseful moments and some unpredictable moments along with the heartbreaking scenes about abusive relationship and child loss ones.
The author kept me intrigued with all the twisted moments, especially after her long-lost brother shows up.
One thing that I haven’t predicted was that Noah was actually real.
Very grateful to the publisher for my review copy through NetGalley
I will publish my review on my instagram blog account and other social media pages.
This one started quite slow for me, but I'm glad I kept with it. I only had two minor criticisms. The first is that there were some lengthy paragraphs of description in the first few chapters about how the characters look and the interior decor of the home. Neither were that important to the storyline and could have been cut down. The second is that the friendship feels a bit juvenile.
The book really picks up in the last third and I'm glad I stuck with it. The author leaves lots of little clues for the reader to pick up on what is going on so you find yourself screaming at the protagonist.
After a messy divorce, terrifying home invasion, and inheritance battle, Jess believes she finally has her life back on track. She is thrilled for her new beginning in a cozy English town where no one recognizes her.
When Jess is attacked on the street, she thinks it just a case of bad luck. However, more creepy things begin to happen. Eventually she believes she is being targeted.
As the events escalate, Jess becomes unglued. She can’t tell what is real and what is her imagination. Someone is after her and they want revenge.
At first I was really bored and I thought Jess was annoying. Like Jess, I felt my mind spinning with the hysteria she created. However ad I kept reading I became more invested in the story. The plot twist at the end I did not see coming.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this arc.
I enjoyed the author’s style of writing and it held my interest. I felt some of it dragged in the middle and it was pretty predictable what was going on and what was going to happen. I will definitely give this author another chance.
This book was so good that I read it in one sitting. It was crammed full of suspense, mystery, unpredictability, twists and then more twists. I had goosebumps and my heart in my mouth for a lot of the narrative. It was gripping and utterly compelling. I really enjoyed it.
Synopsis: Jess just wanted a fresh start in a new town where nobody knows her. She's finally over her abusive ex, has a great new job where she even met Ashley who is her new best friend now, and has met a new man. But when she's attacked in the street, she's afraid the past has finally caught up with her. Thankfully, Ashley was there to save her. But then, more and more strange things are starting to happen, and Jess is afraid she's losing her mind...
My opinion: This was such a quick, fun read I couldn't get enough of. I read the book in one sitting and I really enjoyed finding out more about what was happening to Jess. Well, I did figure out what was going on pretty quickly, but it still was such an interesting story to follow along. And Nora Valters created really great characters I really felt for.
This was my second book by Nora Valters, and my favorite is Now You Know.
Parts of this book reminded me of:
- Stop At Nothing by Tammy Cohen
- Confessions On The 7:45 by Lisa Unger
- Missing Daughter by Kiersten Modglin
Wow! This book was so crazy! What a messed up crew! Lol this book had suspense, intrigue, drama ,,action and so many messed up tales! There were so many twists and turns that I did not see coming! I did see a few right away but definitely some that snuck up on me! I highly recommend reading this book! Its well worth reading! It kept me on the edge of my seat! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
I really enjoyed this book, I thought I’d worked out who the culprit was, well, I’d worked out the first part of it, but then the second part came as a complete surprise, just as any good thriller should!
Thank you NetGalley and Inkubator Books for the eARC.
Jess has returned to the UK after two years of being abroad and hopes her life will be easier after her divorce, her inheritance woes with her brother and a home invasion. She makes a friend and life seems good. Soon however she gets attacked, afraid it was her brother, but her new friend drives the man away. Her friend stays with her at her aunt and uncle's home, where she's staying while they're on a worldwide cruise, also looking after their dog.
But someone's stalking her, leaving a dead mouse on her doorstep, knocking on her door in the middle of the night and other terrifying incidents.
I didn't really enjoy the story, it was obvious to me what was going on and I wished she'd been more aware. I was more worried about the dog than her.
The relentless terror she experienced became tiresome to me. Sorry!
Lots of suspense and drama as main character Jess tries to start a new life and job in a new town and wonders who to trust. She has escaped from childhood trauma and an abusive ex husband. Becoming friendly with another newcomer to town Ashley seems to start the ball rolling on a lot of strange events. There is a lot of suspense as Jess wonders if Ashley and her boyfriend Kevin are really people she can trust and if she can finally allow her brother Tim back into her life after his time as a drug addict.
This is a fast paced book that leads you back and forth wondering if someone is really out to get Jess or is she really losing her mind over her past traumas. There are some very unlikable characters as you keep reading but the ending is very justified and satisfactory.
