In structure, this book is similar to Gone Girl. A wife, June (and in this case, new mother) has gone missing. The story is told from the husband's Ben's point of view from the point she is missing and going forward his search for her, and from her point of view leading up to her disappearance. But there the similarity ends. I was expecting this to be a mystery, but it is not a mystery or a thriller, it is a domestic drama and touches on some heavy topics (postpartum depression, suicide). I was interested in the story, but not fully engaged because it was very hard to put myself in June's shoes. I can understand postpartum depression intellectually but having thankfully never suffered from it, it was hard to really immerse myself in the story.
My thoughts on this book are going to be very hard for me to articulate. This book contains MAJOR content warnings that I think a lot of people, especially mother’s, will have a hard time digesting. Central themes in this book include motherhood, postpartum struggles, and suicide. It was very hard for me to connect with June since I am not a mother, have never experienced postpartum disease, and have thankfully never been suicidal. Not being able to connect with June made it hard to ‘like’ this book. I flew through the first 50% because I was very intrigued by what was happening, but after that, it lost me and I was no longer interested. I also had a hard time caring about any of the side characters. I felt like a lot happened but none of it was “deep”. I didn’t feel connected or like I understood anyone in a way that other books with the same themes have.
I can see why this will work for people and would still encourage those who are okay with the content to give it a try.
I was very invested in this book! I definitely think it would make a great book for discussion or a book club. The family dynamic is easy to relate to. I liked the characters. They pulled on my heartstrings and I found myself routing for them. I would recommend this to readers. Thank you for the ARC.
Sorry I couldn't care less about these characters. Wasn't for me.
Thanks to publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book. While I got the book for free, it has no bearing on the rating I gave it.
This ARC was provided to me via Kindle, Harlequin Trade Publishing and by #NetGalley. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
A good pick for a book club read. It plays well on family dynamics, mystery and general fiction.
My favorite book is Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates. This book reminded me of a modern day version of that in a lot of ways—particularly regarding a mother who loves her children but after having given up dreams to have them, doesn’t think motherhood is enough. I didn’t love this as much as that book (but that’s an extremely tall order) but I did enjoy it a lot and recommend it to those who enjoy domestic dramas.
This is the first book I have read that did not have a cover from NetGalley. Now I'm curious to how many great stories I have missed out on. This book takes a hard look at what can happen to a relationship after a baby is born into the family. I thought it was going to be a mystery story when I first started it but the more I got into it I realized its about how family and relationships change after a baby is born. Great read! I feel this book will be a hit with a number of different genre readers. Also this would be a good book for a book club to read too.
