THE CLASH INSIDE ME opens with a young man perched on a ledge and contemplating an unusual predicament: did he or did he not commit murder? And if he did, which of his alter-personalities will ultimately be held responsible?
Hmmmmm… this was a hard one to rate because there were elements of it I thought were genius but then the actual execution of the storyline left a lot to be desired.
I loved the whole concept of the novel and the split personality of the protagonist and the way this was presented in the book, but for me the storyline and the cast of characters didn’t feel genuine to me. I felt the plot was a little too ‘dramatic’ with a lot happening too frantically and there wasn’t a sole character aside from the protagonist that I actually liked. This left me not really caring about what actually happened and thus the emotional pull of the book fell flat.
I tend to find DID narratives fascinating so this should have been a solid read. It wasn't. The time span is too long and the narrative style emphasizes telling far more than showing. We are experiencing the whole plot through the protagonist telling us what happened and why and he doesn't feel especially reliable.
DID is something that has always really interested me, so I had high hopes for this novel. And I have to say it was disappointing. It could have been that I was expecting too much, but it fell short.
The characters were a little bland, and it was such a quick read that I didn’t feel like the story went anywhere. The final reveal at the end felt sort of rushed and was kind of meh.
I received this arc in exchange for review!
