I loved this slice of life (lives)! The format really lent itself to making the reader feel like they're a member of this friend group, and there was so much detail put into this book that added beautifully to its realism. I wish I didn't read it at work since I def teared up a few times.
** SPOILER **
One thing that I didn't like was Cookie's reaction to Davene's struggle with her mental health. I wish at the least it had been addressed how invalidating her response was, though I did appreciate her gesture at the end.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book is a great representation of friendship among Black women. It's so relatable! I felt like I was really in the group chat. I especially appreciate the amount of detail allowed for each individual hair care routine.

Thank you NetGalley for letting me read this ARC for free.
I'm on the fence on this one. I liked the art style and the underlying theme of the book but there were some things that just aren't my think, like the drug use and some of the language used in the story. However I loved how all the girls stuck together and were there for each other in their times of need. Even though I can't relate much to the hair struggles that many African American women have, I appreciate that this book included struggles that everyone can relate to no matter who they are. The first girl afraid of her safety really stood out to me. The scene in the beginning where she was walking home and had a key between each finger for protection is something I think every woman has experienced in their life or will experience in the future. Another issue I can relate to is the anxiety and depression one of the other ladies was going through. I was really disappointed though that Cookie wasn't more supportive of her wanting to get on antidepressants. There is a terrible assumption that being on mental health medication is a bad thing when it's really not and it's something a lot of people experience including myself. I've been on anti anxiety medication for many years and while things aren't perfect, the medicine has really helped make things easier for me.
If you are ok with the language and drug use then I think you will enjoy this one a lot.

I loved this compulsively readable graphic novel that explored and handled such a beautiful friendship through four of their perspectives. I read it in one sitting and absolutely adored it. Definitely a preorder for anyone searching for a graphic novel to fall into!

I absolutely adored this graphic novel. I loved the focus on black women and black hair. It had beautiful illustrations. It also talked about mental health because it talked about depression. Overall it was amazing and I would highly recommend this to everyone.

Wash Day is a glorious demonstration of black joy and black hair. This is a slice of life story featuring four friends who love and support each other through different phases of their lives: career and mental health hardships, family drama, and relationship troubles. Each has a unique personality and style that is emphasized by the amazing color schemes that change throughout the book depending on the main character of each chapter. The art and colors in the book are spectacular. A great feel good read!

Very seldomly do I reach for graphic novels, but the title and the cover alone made me want to pick this one up expeditiously!
Thank you so much to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Wash Day Diaries consists of 4 different short interconnected stories that follow 4 best friends, Kim, Tanisha, Davene, and Cookie, and their everyday lives. I loved this friend group so much; they remind me of how my friends/cousins interact with one another and it made me all warm and fuzzy! What I loved the most, is that each story includes what each woman's hair routine looks like. As a black woman who has a legit day-long wash day, I felt so seen, and I know I won't be the only one!!
The art in this was absolutely beautiful and I will most definitely be picking up a physical copy on release day!

I loved this graphic novel! While it was filled with a fair share of drama, the overall vibe of this book was so cozy and filled with love, an absolute joy to read. I loved the art and the vibrancy held within these pages, and I thought the vignette story-telling style felt like a summer montage in the best way.

Wash day Diaries is a slice of life graphic novel that follows four best friends: Kim, Tanesha, Davene, and Cookie. It’s made up of short stories that covers what all of the women were doing over the course of their wash days, and ends with the entire friend group supporting Kim at an event that’s important to her. It shows their joys and their struggles throughout the day, and of course, it shows their processes while going through a wash day.
This was such a gorgeous and heartwarming book! The characters’ conversations felt so genuine and heartfelt both when they were going through difficult times, and when they were giggling together about silly things. It was a cute depiction of a loving, solid friend group. Of course I loved seeing the images of all of the women taking care of their hair in the beautiful ways that only black women do. It manages to be cute and lighthearted while also touching on a couple of more difficult topics. I highly recommend picking this up.

This story is about four best friends and how their friendship. Each one has something going on in their personal life, but they are all there for each other no matter what. I really enjoyed these interwoven stories that showcased their hair routine and their life. The story allowed each woman to shine and let their story come to life.
Wash Day Diaries is on the shot side and I would have loved for this to be a little bit longer. I just wanted to keep reading about this four women and diving deeper into their relationship and how they were always there for one another, but this is a wonderful story that I recommend everyone picking up.

First things first, I am in absolutely in love with the style, the colors of this graphic novel, The story throughout it was very good and I loved it even though I felt like it was on the shorter side. We followed four girls who are friends and the story throughout you see how they each have each other backs. This includes mentions of mental health, dating and everyone careers.
Read this if you need to feel connected to all the characters and like if they was your very own group of besties.

This is a really cute, slice-of-life graphic novel starring four Black women.
The art and color scheme is GORGEOUS. I was so happy to see such realistic and relatable hair representation! The storylines of each person tackles heavy topics such as mental health, family, abusive relationships, micro aggressions and prejudice we face daily.
My favorite part was the sisterhood that they have with each other. Just a visually stunning piece of work! Highly recommend.

First off, the illustrations are beautiful. I loved the use of color scheme. The purple, pinks and oranges are the colors that followed the main characters and when something off-putting happens we see the use of the cooler colors.
I also loved following the stories of the 4 girls. As a black woman myself I loved seeing our culture depicted in a way that didn't focus so heavily on our trauma while still including some of the micro-aggressions and prejudice we confront on the daily.
I enjoyed this book whole-heartedly from start to finish. Our author tackled some serious topics such as prejudice in the workplace, the discussion of mental health, not feeling safe outdoors etc. but at the same time included light-hearted material that highlighted the reality of what we as women go through---by not so heavily focusing on the messed up things we go through but still addressing, the author made it seem as though these things are common....and she is right.
Most importantly, Jamila Rowser and Robyn Smith came together and crafted a beautiful piece on black girl joy, sisterhood, friendship and the meaning of togetherness. She encompassed the happiness and comfort that comes with having a nice group of friends that you can turn to! Thank you for this comic!
Representation: black girl joy, mental health, lgbtq+

I loved this this graphic novel! It was such a good story even though it was short. The illustrations were amazing. Jamila did an amazing job in telling us a little bit of all 4 girls and how they all had each others back. The story also touches on dating, mental health, and careers. These 4 girls felt real to me, like they were my friends too. So many funny and great true to life moments.

I loved the art in this little graphic novel, which is just under 200 pages. The colours were beautiful and the depiction of these four friends and their various wash day routines was very detailed and wonderfully drawn. I loved the body diversity too, and the fact that Cookie is queer. I really appreciated that, and I got a real feel for the friendship between these four girls.

I can’t speak on the rep in this story as I am a white American but seeing the camaraderie of black women is such a beautiful thing and needs to be shown more often! This story was so much fun and the art was gorgeous when this comes out for full release I will be buying a hardcopy and making everyone I know read this!

Wash day is a book for the ages, Showing all sides of triumphs , struggles , strengths and chosen family that makes your soul feel good by the end of the read.

A slice-of-life graphic novel showcasing four Black girlfriends as they bond over hair, relationships, and the ups and downs of life. A beautiful story of Black women loving each other and themselves. #blackgirlmagic at it’s finest.

I received a digital copy thanks to netgalley and I'm so grateful that I did.
The art is beyond beautiful, the sisterhood made me feel pure love, the dialogue was organic.
The story was just over a hundred pages, but I promise you that I would have read four hundred pages of these girls living their best lives together.

This graphic novel follows the interconnected stories of the 4-friend group of Kim, Davene, Cookie, and Tanisha as they go through with their life and their wash day routines. For someone who had little to no idea prior to reading this about the hair routine and sisterhood of the Black women, this was such a nice read as I had a glimpse of the lives of my fellow women. Also, the scenes were realistic and mirrored the everyday struggles of most women, like that one particular scene where someone got catcalled and that scene with Davene. I just wished that this went more in-depth, especially with two of the girls' stories. Cookie’s initial reaction to one of her friend’s issues was realistic since most people still share the same sentiments, which was saddening. I really love the illustrations and the color scheme used by the artist! Overall, I liked this one and would recommend it if you're looking for an easy and quick read. Just a reminder that this might trigger some, although all of it is mild.
