Engrossing story of a young couple and the extreme challenges they face while trying to have a baby. When Jake and Kate have exhausted all methods of trying to have a baby they turn to a surrogate. Much to their surprise and joy they find one right away. The only problem is when things seem too good to be true they usually are. Combine this with an evil, narcissistic mother in law and you have an excellent novel with lots of twists you won’t expect. Full of insights into mental illness and their effects, this novel is excellent and impossible to put down.
Magpies are thought by some to be symbols of good luck and good fortune. Others see them as untidy and of little value. A fitting title for this book that looks at two sides of the same story and how different they can appear. Told from the perspectives of Marissa and Kate, their common experience reflects wildly different points view. A surprising twist explains and complicates the women’s interactions. Add in a few key peripheral characters and the story is complete.
Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. Marisa is trying to have a baby with her husband. They have a roommate who may not be as nice as she claims. Marisa is expecting and her and her husband excited. This book was well written.
When I started reading this book I thought it was going to be at least a 4 star read, by how much I enjoyed it, but then I started feeling a tad disappointed by the second half of the book.
The first half of the book was really intriguing and kept me wanting more of it. By the time the first twist came around it had me totally not expecting it, so I was thinking that this is going to be a book I really enjoy by the end.
That being said that big twist was the only major twist in the book, and afterwards it went nowhere with the plot of the book, and that left me kind of disappointed to be honest, cause I was expecting so much based on the first twist that happened.
Even with the fact that I didn't love the book by the end I have to talk about positives.
This book dealt with some heavy themes like infertility and mental illness quite well, and it did it an honest and emotional way, by reading you can understand what characters are dealing with, and it makes you have compassion for them.
As mental illness was quite a big part of the story I feel like the author went about it pretty well, it didn't try to force the reader to excuse the actions of the character, the book only gave us an understanding of those actions without excusing them on the base of it being due to mental illness.
The writing in my opinion was clever, especially in the first part of the book. The characters were good in a sense of them not being that lovable but even with that you can still understand them and their actions, which i always think is a plus. Because I don't think a character has to be lovable but needs to be understood by the reader.
Now i have to talk about some negatives about the book.
Like I previously mentioned the book only having one twist fell flat for me, because of the rest of the book wasn't even a thriller.
I also had issues with the ending even tho i do understand it, it still fell short for me.
The trope of the evil mother in law also fell flat for me, just due to how overused it is, while bringing nothing to the story.
Not every character had that much development, characters like Chris and Jake felt one note to me, tho Marrisa and Kate i found to have more substance and those two made for the more fun characters.
Overall it was a good and quick read, and I enjoyed what the book had to offer for the most part.
Meet Marissa, who has a heartbreaking past that has finally met the man of her dreams, Jake. After just months of dating they decide to move in together and try for a baby. While their financial situation needs a little boost, they rent out space in their home to Kate, who seems to have little boundaries. Is there something untoward going on with Jake and Kate, or is it just Marisa's imagination?
I felt this book had a great premise and original story line but had a sub par delivery. At times, I felt the telling of the story was rushed and at other times, droned on. I do however applaud the author's ability to make this unpredictable. I was so sure I knew what was coming but taken by surprise a few times throughout. While this may not be my favorite read of the year, it was still worth the read to me.
This book had me hooked from the first page. It is an awesome thriller with a huge twist that I never saw coming. Marisa and Jake move into a new house and are trying to start a family. They run into some money troubles and have to bring in a lodger named Kate who just can’t seem to understand boundaries . Marisa finds out she is pregnant and that’s when the drama really begins .
This is definately a good read for anyone looking for a fast paced twist thriller.
I loved this book! Thank you to Simon & Schuster and NetGalley for this engrossing domestic thriller.
The story is mainly about maternal longing and the extents to which some will go to achieve control over a sense of secure family.
It is told from the dual points of view of Marissa and Kate, both involved intimately with Jake. Annabelle is Jake’s controlling mother who plays a hand in all the characters’ lives.
I loved the twist that came early in the story. Unlike other readers, I did not at all feel that it detracted from the story - only made me read faster and more compulsorily.
5 stars.
Thank you for the advanced copy of this book! I will be posting my review on social media, to include Instagram, Amazon, Goodreads, and Instagram!
Wow! What a ride! This is a great psychological thriller that keeps you guessing throughout the book. It twisted in ways I never saw coming. The premise of a inviting a stranger into your house and be a surrogate mother itself is fascinating and was well executed by the author. Great read!
Thank you NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for the copy of Magpie. I really liked the majority of this book. It is difficult to say much more at the risk of spoilers, but this is a good read, although I was a little disappointed in the ending. I thought it was really well-written with a really great story. I liked how we got to know the main characters so well, even if they weren’t really likable. This book definitely kept me reading to see how everything would turn out. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.
I liked the dual narratives of this book, although it was kind of easy to see where it was going. I did like the character of Jakes mother. I thought her inclusion and storyline helped to make the story a little more unique.
When I first saw this book, I knew I had to read it. I never want to judge a book by the cover, but this one definitely caught my eye. Upon reading the synopsis, I knew it was something right up my alley
Magpie gives an intimate look at the representation of infertility and a way for those who have never experienced it to have a somewhat understanding of what one goes through. It shows us the pain and sorrow that come with the struggle to conceive. This book talks about multiple issues people deal with on a day-to-day basis from mental illness to relationship issues. I will say that this book kind of starts flat and didn’t exactly draw me in, but I pushed through, and it eventually got my attention. So, I suggest if you’re reading this book to stick with it. About halfway through you start to notice things, and it hits you hard. Like an “OMG how did I not see that coming” moment. Once you read it, you realize there are been little hints about it throughout the book, making you say “how did it miss that”. There is so much that goes on in this book that it’s almost impossible to review without giving something away. I would suggest this book to anyone who likes psychological thrillers.
TRIGGER WARNING
There are mentions of infertility, mental illness, rape, and miscarriages.
Thank you to NetGalley, Simon & Schuster, and Elizabeth Day for my ARC of Magpie!
Magpie by Elizabeth Day is a creepy psychological thriller I absolutely devoured. The plot was fascinating, but I particularly loved how the characters were do deeply developed. Though Magpie is my first novel by this author, it certainly won't be my last. Highly recommend!
Thank you NetGalley and Simon and Schuster for an early copy of The Magpie. I truly don’t know why this book is titled this but I’m sooooo glad I was offered this Gem. I would not have willingly wanted to read this book because of the title. I absolutely LOVED this novel. Fantastic writing, wonderful plot, so real!!! Each character felt so real to me, I felt the emotions of each and everyone. This book is a WINNER!!!!!
** spoiler alert ** if you don't want to read spoilers I suggest not reading this review. I was really excited to read this book after reading the synopsis. The book started off really strong but then it took you on a wild whirlwind of a read. I loved the idea of the story but I feel like the author wanted to cram too much into one story. You can write a book without adding four of five different twists. The twist of his mom was too much. You already twisted it when Marisa is actually the surrogate and then added his mom as the villain. It made me roll my eyes. The other thing I had a really hard time with was the whole surrogate storyline. They randomly pick this girl to be their surrogate and didn't get any background information about her or her health history. Then they decided to move her into their lives. Who does that? It was hard to read. I feel like the story should have not been so drawn out. It feels like a lifetime movie.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
A couple struggling with infertility invite a lodger to stay with them to help pay for all the costs they will incur trying to make their baby dreams come true. Marissa and Jake welcome Kate into their home, not knowing they have sealed their own fate (Do these people every watch Netflix or read a book?). Because Kate has an agenda of her own, one that includes Jake and a baby, but not Marissa. This is an enjoyable read but is one of many domestic thrillers using the same basic plot line.
What a roller coaster of a ride this novel is. The story is told from alternating chapters by the main characters Marissa and Kate. At the beginning of this book Marissa is pregnant and describes how she and her husband Jake take in a boarder to help pay the rent as they have just bought a new home. Alternating chapters from Kate tell a differing story which adds a lot of suspense. Also Jake's mom Annabelle is an interesting and not very nice character that is very attached to her son at the expense of everyone else's lives.
I really enjoyed reading this book and speculating about which character was telling the truth. I read this book quickly in two days and also enjoyed the very satisfactory ending.
Magpie by Elizabeth Day started off well as a young couple falls in love and buys their dream home. They take in a lodger, and from there everything falls apart. The twist to the story came fairly early on, and then the book kind of droned on and on. Maybe another twist at the end would have made this more exciting or noteworthy. I lost interest once the twist happened, way too early in my opinion, and just skimmed the rest of the book.
