She's Up To No Good was such an amazing book. I loved the duel storylines and how it alternated between Evelyn's past and the present.
The number of times this made me laugh out loud - haha.
This was so good, I clearly won't forget it anytime soon.
This book has it all...love, laughs, family, and the journey to finding more!
I did not want to leave this world!
Jenna is 34 and just divorced, living in her childhood bedroom, and Evelyn is Jenna’s plucky 89 year old grandma, who has business to attend to in her hometown. The story follows Jenna and Evelyn’s trip back to Evelyn’s hometown in Massachusetts, as well as a second timeline following Evelyn’s life from when she was a teenager in the 1950s up to present day. The author wistfully captures the spirit of the decades, and the story is a rollercoaster of emotion that had me laughing in parts and crying in others. What a compelling and wonderfully heartwarming read! Evelyn is a firecracker and I want to be like her, but there were times I felt less connected to Jenna’s story. I occasionally found myself wishing the whole book was about Evelyn and her life, but everything came together at the end, and I’m ultimately glad to have spent time with both characters. The beach town setting is a character in its own right and I could practically smell the salty air, taste the lobster rolls, and feel the sun on my skin the whole time.
She’s Up To No Good by Sara Goodman Confino is a smart, satisfying story, that’s full of heart. I really enjoyed reading this book, and look forward to reading more of Confino’s work.
Effervescent and filled with hilarious moments, SHE’S UP TO NO GOOD is a rare treat of a novel that will have you laughing out loud in one chapter and crying in the next. You’ll be telling all your friends about this book!
Evelyn’s vivacious personality is the perfect foil (and antidote) for her thirty-something granddaughter’s ennui. Fans of FOR THE LOVE OF FRIENDS, the author’s debut, will especially enjoy finding all the “easter eggs” within the plot referencing Evelyn and her unforgettable family!
Highly recommend!! This book is a definite page-turner! You'll be left thinking about the story long after you put the book down. First book to read by this author but definitely not my last!
Will definitely be rereading this in the summer. A beautiful look at the relationships between generations. I found the writing immensely readable and and the story a joy. I will be recommending to everyone!
Thank you for the advanced y of this book for my honest review. I really loved reading this story. It was simple and somewhat predictable, but it also very enjoyable. Loved the characters. Especially the grandmother. Definitely worth reading. I only give 5 star ratings for an extraordinary book, and I’ve only done that for a few. 4 stars in a great rating from me!
The deeper I got into the book the more I wanted!
We start off meeting Jenna as her husband Brad tells her he is leaving, no he doesn't want to try and work it out and yes he has met someone else. Yikes!
Jenna moves back in with her parents to get her bearings and even though that's meant to be temporary, she finds herself coasting through.
Cue cheeky grandma Evelyn. What a wild woman full of heart. Jenna offers to drive Evelyn back home for a week to take care of business. On the way she shares her own love story with her granddaughter and it's anything but ordinary.
This is a beautiful story entwined in multiple love stories. The relationship between Evelyn and Jenna was seamlessly written showing the mischief that only older people can get away with with their younger counterparts. Evelyn was a scream as a young lady and she doesn't disappoint as she continues to age. I enjoyed their banter and Evelyn's encouragement of Jenna to be brave.
Though I enjoyed the love story between Jenna and Joe and Jenna reclaiming her own identity, it was the love story between Evelyn and Tony that kept me captivated.
I feel like the story wrapped up too quickly at the end and I defintely wanted more of Joe and Jenna.
This was a really cute read. If you like stories that are mutilayered, shifting through past and present with endearing characters then this is for you.
I wanted to like this book but i just couldnt get into it. The main character didnt hold my interest. I had high hopes for this book but it fell flat.
She's Up to No Good
A Novel
by Sara Goodman Confino
I did not love the dual timeline, it seemed to be rushed. All in all, it was an ok book. Grandma, I enjoyed it more than the Jenna, 35 and parents want her out to date and to leave. Anyway, Granny was the star for me.
I really enjoyed this book. Following past and present storylines of Jenna and her grandmother, I couldn’t help but see some of my late great aunt in Evelyn’s sass. This was a quick read that tackled a variety of themes very well. It’s funny, it’s sad, it’s relatable, it’s life. I would recommend this book.
(I received this ARC from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.)
I thoroughly enjoyed reading She's Up To No Good. I finished it in a couple of days as once I started the story, I wanted to read more!
The story begins with 34 year-old Jenna, who finds out her husband wants a divorce after meeting someone else.
Six months later, she has moved back to her childhood home with her parents, opting to stay home and wallow in her misery. Enter grandmother Evelyn, who visits and announces that she is heading to her hometown in Massachusetts to take care of some personal business. Jenna offers to drive her, and the two set out for an adventure that will change both of their lives.
I adored Evelyn's story as it unfolded throughout the chapters with it alternating from present day to her past. Whilst I was interested in Jenna's story, it was Evelyn's that really moved me. This is a beautiful story about love, and what it means to love someone and the lengths that person will go.
Highly recommend it. The only small criticisms I have are that there are a lot of characters and it could be a little confusing at times to remember them all, and also the relationship between Jenna and Joe felt a little rushed.
I went into this book hoping for a light-hearted read with an interesting storyline to keep me hooked and that is exactly what I got. The story follows a double timeline of granddaughter Jenna as she struggles in the aftermath of her surprise divorce with her husband and grandmother Evelyn as she navigates love, loss, and the importance of family. Evelyn was by far the most likeable character in the book - she was funny, mysterious, and just enough trouble that it was hard not to root for her to get whatever she wanted. Her story was so believable with just enough touch of heartbreak and loss that it was easy to relate to her pain and struggles. I had a harder time following along with Jenna's storyline - it just wasn't as compelling or believable as Evelyn's. I found myself often wishing to have more of Evelyn's story, but it did a nice job of tying the present experiences into Evelyn's past. The romance between Jenna and Joe was almost too quick, but I am pleased to have read this story.
3.5/5 stars!
A book with feminist themes, and about generational strength. The character developemnt was highly tangible and I enjoyed the way the protagonist's life story was dealt with..
Full review to come on Instagram and Amazon. Thank you to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for a review copy.
For two women generations apart, going home will change their lives in this funny, poignant, and life-affirming novel about family, secrets, and broken hearts by the author of For the Love of Friends.
What an absolute delight Jenna's grandma Evelyn is! I loved this story of the two making a journey to the past,, to connect the present and future. Jenna was blindsided with a divorce, and she is floundering. Enter Evelyn, who "needs" someone to driver her to the place they've summered all their lives.I love that this weaves present day and the past seamlessly through the plot. The characters were so well developed, and I loved that Jenna was able to learn more about the strong women who made her who she is today. I highly recommend this book. I thank NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing (they never let me down!) for an e-ARC in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
Sara has done it again! If you enjoyed For the Love of Friends then this book should be next on your list!
Evelyn, the fantastic and hysterical grandma who we met in For the Love of Friends, takes her granddaughter Jenna, who is in the midst of a divorce on a road trip which leads to grandma shenanigans and the beginning of a new love story. Throughout the book the telling of Evelyn's secrets in her past become interconnected with the present day love story in the making.
This book is humor, love, family expectations, secrets and healing of past wounds all wrapped in one!
She's Up to No Good is a great book and heartwarming, it also has a dual timeline which I'm a sucker for. It reminds me of the movie "The Longest Ride" where there's also past and present. I love those kinds of movies and books. I love how this book talks about an old love story, family, second chances, and present love. It was a quick read and I really enjoyed reading everything inside the book. Honestly speaking, I wasn't expecting to cry this much but I did anyway. Emily is funny, loving and I aspire to be as confident as she is lmao. Her stories are the ones I'm always looking forward to reading, she's an icon indeed. Jenna and Joe are such a sweetheart and both deserve each other. The ending is the only ending I would accept and nothing else. Although, I wish the epilogue has more and longer scenes about them. Nonetheless, I absolutely love and enjoyed this book!
I TOTALLY RECOMMEND IT!!!!
Thanks to Netgalley for the advanced reading copy! It was humorous and relatable. The protagonist tries to find herself in a roadtrip with her grandmother after an unexpected moment in her adult life. Although I was more interested in the main character's story and how she related to the events that happened to her, I enjoyed the story of her grandmother and how their experiences related to each other as well!
4.5/5
At the onset of this novel, we meet 34-year-old Jenna whose husband informs her that he is in love with another woman and no longer wants to be married to Jenna who, though aware of the cracks in their marriage, is taken aback by this revelation. Her marriage of four years is over.
Fast forward six months, Jenna is living in her childhood home with her parents and is still unable to come to terms with her marriage falling apart and the uncertainty in her future. Her parents, her mother, in particular, are trying to get her to venture out of the house and resume her life. Enter eighty-nine-year-old Evelyn Bergman Gold, Jenna’s grandmother who announces that she intends to drive from Maryland to her hometown of Hereford, Massachusetts to take care of family business. Jenna ends up volunteering to drive her grandmother and stay with her for the duration thereby ending her self-imposed isolation. What follows is an uproariously funny and eventful road trip with Evelyn sharing her own life story hoping to lift Jenna’s spirits and motivate her to move on with her life.
The narrative is split between two timelines - the present day following Jenna and Evelyn’s trip to Massachusetts and Evelyn’s story that follows her from a teenager in the 1950s and continues through the decades that follow. Evelyn is a force to be reckoned with! While her antics leave the reader in splits and Jenna constantly on her toes, her story, which she gradually reveals to Jenna is one of first love and heartbreak, family, loss, tragedy and the choices people make out of love for each other. She introduces Jenna to Joe, the grandnephew of Tony, her first love. Jenna, initially annoyed with Evelyn’s matchmaking efforts finds herself enjoying her time exploring the seaside town with Joe. Jenna slowly begins to come to terms with her impending divorce while also getting to know more about her mother’s side of the family. Evelyn’s story continues in the present day as well and more is revealed as the story progresses.
She‘s Up To No Good by Sarah Goodman Confino is a beautiful heartwarming novel story about love, choices, family and second chances. This novel is full of heart (loved Evelyn!) and humor (with some major laugh-out-loud moments) and I enjoyed every moment of it. I look forward to reading more of the author’s books in the future.
Thanks to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for a digital review copy of this entertaining and heartwarming novel in exchange for my honest review.
she’s up to no good is a dual timeline novel which follows jenna, who is recently divorced, and her grandmother evelyn, a lively older woman who has plenty of exciting stories to tell about her past. jenna decides to join evelyn on a trip to a significant place in the history of their family, and what ensues is a wonderful novel dealing with numerous relevant themes. among said themes include self discovery, the highs and lows of romantic endeavors, digging deep to overcome obstacles, personal growth, and the significance that family can hold in life.
when i requested this novel, i really did not know what to expect. they say to not judge a book by a cover, but in this situation that is exactly what i did. this beautiful cover drew me into the book, and i am glad it did, because i really enjoyed what followed. i loved reading about these two women, and thought the book flowed in a natural and organic way. the dual timelines added so much to the story; i really liked what evelyn shared about her past, as it reminded me of conversations i have had with my own grandmother. there were so many raw and real emotions prevalent throughout the book, which made it really difficult to put down! stories that are centered around women and their experiences with love, friendships, and family always grab my attention; she’s up to no good had all of that AND more!
i really think this book can be enjoyed by anyone, but especially women. there’s something real and profound embedded in each page, and the stories and words really resonated with me. i look forward to reading other books written by sara goodman confino, because this was an absolute joy. i found myself unable to stop laughing and smiling. 4/5 stars!
