I really liked the concept of this book and felt that it had so much potential, but for me it just fell flat.
Charlie and Becca hate each other. They bicker constantly. Their only shared connection is Ally. So when Ally dies, both are shattered. After Ally's funeral, they assume they'll never have to see one another again. But Ally left behind a bucket list of experiences she wanted them to complete annually for her and scatter some of her ashes at each location. Over those years, we see the ups and downs of both Charlie and Becca's lives, how they process their grief, and the slow thawing of their feelings toward one another as they are forced to spend time together.
The concept and plot are interesting; this is part dramedy, part enemies-to-lovers rom-com. Well-written and easy to read, its slow-burn romance takes several twists and turns over the course of a decade. Told in dual POV, the story sensitively deals with loss and grief and the different ways people cope with it. There are some funny moments in it to lighten things up. If you are looking for a bittersweet enemies-to-lovers story, this one is for you! Thank you to NetGalley, and Harper Collins, UK, One More Chapter, for gifting me this ARC. All opinions are my own.
Well, this wasn’t quite what I was expecting! I think I was expecting a plain old rom-com but this is so much more. Yes, it’s romantic and yes, it’s a comedy but it’s also heartbreaking and poignant and I totally loved it.
I was fortunate to receive an advanced copy of this book for an honest review. Best friends Ally & Becca are at university where they meet Charlie, who goes on to become Ally's fiance. Charlie & Becca seem to despise each other, (the reason for which we find out later in the story) and the only reason they bother with each other is because of their love for Ally. When Ally sadly dies, the pair are tasked with completing Ally's bucket list. We follow the duo over a ten year span and see how their futures unfold and whether or not they can maintain being civil long enough to complete the tasks . I definitely recommend reading this book for yourself.
A romance with a difference! Ally always had her life organised, so after her premature death, her fiance Charlie and best friend Becca should not have been surprised that she'd organised a bucket list for the scattering of her ashes in various places, for them to do together. The problem is they hate each other! As they progress through the tasks Ally has left them, a story unfolds of love, loss and grief. Will they ever reach resolution and move on with their lives? This was quite a heartbreaking story in many ways - the portrayal of Charlie and Becca's grief was very raw and moving, though I was most touched by the underplayed emotions of her mother Valerie, who is not a central character but plays a vital part in our understanding of the dynamics between Charlie, Becca and her late daughter. Though the outcome was a tad predictable, this was a well-plotted story with enough conflict and interest to keep you turning the pages to see just how things would resolve themselves.
Unfortunately, this book was a total miss for me. I never could grasp what the real essence of the book was about and it was a major detraction. I’m sure other, different readers will grab this book, but it wasn’t my cup,of tea.
Oh I am so sad about this one! I wanted to love it but the characters are just really irritating and I gave up at 20%. Thank you to netgalley for this arc I wish I could have enjoyed.
I received an E-ARC with a request for my honest review.
This Romance follows Charlie and Becca, who both lost someone close to them. Charlie and Becca have never got along but put their differences aside to care for Ally in her last days.
A year after Ally’s death they both get an email asking them to go and see Ally’s Mum. They are presented with a bucket list which Ally had composed, and Charlie and Becca are to complete the list on her behalf.
They decide to complete one item on the bucket list a year, and each year brings their relationship to another level.
With past tensions aired and confusing and unexpected feelings developing, there are laughs, arguments and tears along the way.
Will they complete the bucket list? Will their feelings towards each other change?
I liked that the story was told over a long time period and that both characters had a share of telling the story from their side. It allowed the characters to develop as the years went by and they find out what they really want from their lives.
It is a bit of a will they won’t they kind of book, as they both have their reasons and the arguments, they have do get in the way sometimes.
I loved the idea of them completing the bucket list together in the memory of Ally.
Overall, a romance where the memory of one brings two others together.
I knew I'd enjoy Charlie, Becca and Ally's story but I just wasn't prepared by how much! Grief is always a tough subject. Ten Years tackled the topic in the BEST way and was both heartbreaking and heartwarming in equal measure.
With characters that slowly grow on you, plenty of ups and downs and a romance that slowly bubbles under the surface before finding the perfect time to blossom, Hughes' writing will have you laughing one minute and crying a few pages later!
What I loved most about this book was the portrayal of different types of love: that all consuming feeling of first-love, the love between friends, those love/hate kind of relationships and the forbidden but oh-so-perfect-for-each other, desperate kind of love were all explored in the most enjoyably intense way. Ten Years was in no-way a straight forward romance book. Forget boy meets girl and they live happily ever after... this is a exploration of love and all the nitty gritty complications that come with it - I LOVED it! ❤️
Unfortunately this one is not doing anything for me at all. I am finding myself dreading to pick the story back up.
Thank you to the publisher and author for the ARC via Netgalley. All opinions are my own.
Honestly, boring?
It's a romance novel....I wasn't expecting the great American novel, but still, I thought I could get SOMETHING. No....nothing like that. Typical two best friends, one has a man, the other is wild. One dies, the friend and the man deal with grief and then fall in love.
Let me just watch When Harry Met Sally and be okay.
Thank to NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read the book.
Two characters Charlie and Becca have both seen their best friend die. They are known enemies but they each receive an email from Ally from beyond the grave. She asked them to finish her bucket list. Although in the middle of the book they start to like each other I did find it hard going in places. Thanks to the author and her publisher. Thanks also to NetGalley.
Charley and Becca both loved Ally
They did have only this connection
They meet every now and then yearly
They bicker and quarrel and there is no logic in their falling in love
Their characters building is dull and Sapir
Thanks NetGalley for ARC

If you love a good enemies to lovers story, this is the perfect book for you. When Becca's best friend and Charlie's fiancé passes away from cancer they are left in an emotional tornado. Not knowing what to do or how to move forward. Near her one-year anniversary of her death both Becca and Charlie receive an email from Ally! How is that even possible? Ahhh good old scheduled email. She is asking the two of them to complete her bucket list together. The one issue, Becca and Charlie despise each other. They always have, the only thing that kept the two of them from tearing each other's faces off was Ally. Will they be able to complete Ally's wishes without destroying each other?
I really enjoyed the middle of this book, the characters finally come to terms with one another and it was a fun read. In the end I could not get over the constant bickering. It was like reading about two toddlers going after one another day after day. It was too much and brought the book down. If there was more of a balance I would have loved it. Thank you to Pernille Hughes and One More Chapter for gifting me this read.
Ten Years is a beautiful story about overcoming the loss of a loved one and finding hope (and love) with the person least expected. While the story starts off heavy and sad, you will walk away satisfied and happy. Pernille Hughes presents grief in a unique way through each character, making the story relatable for different readers. Spanning many years, the story is a really slow-burn in the romance department. However, the characters develop brilliantly over this lengthy time frame. I was more than invested in their future by the end of the book. I certainly walked away with a warm heart after finishing.
Sweet heartwarming story about two friends whose mourning for a friend keeps their memory alive, similar to a one day vibe!
Have some tissues ready!! This is a romance but it also explores the grief of losing a loved one and how to move forward. I didn’t care for the characters very much in the first half. But by the second half I grew to love them both! Fantastic character development for each of them although I felt like we got to know Becca better than Charlie.
The story could drag a bit with how long each chapter is, making it hard to focus at times. I really enjoyed the switching POVs and that we get to see Becca and Charlie over the course of ten years (as the title suggests). Also I’m a sucker for slow burn enemies to lovers, and this one was an extremely slow burn!
Overall an enjoyable read about grief, love, and hope.
TW/CW: cancer, death (off page), grief, infidelity
This is a great book to read on the beach if you don’t want anything too taxing or want to get too involved with the characters. I found it a bit of a slog at times reading it at home. I found the characters to be a bit dull and the plot generally to be a bit laboured. However there were some bittersweet moments. Read it if you are after an enemies to lovers book.
This was a sweet, hopeful romance.
I knew from the beginning what direction it would take but I loved the building of the relationship.
From enemies to lovers but with heartfelt emotion.
The narration and banter between the two main characters was great. I loved the sarcasm and the heat behind the words said.
Over all I would recommend.
Enemies-to-lovers and slow burn fans round up for the ultimate slow burn
. This was such a beautiful story of grief and letting go, and I loved how this book spanned such a long period of time as it allowed time for the readers to grow with the characters. Becca was such a fun character to follow and I enjoyed her sparring with Charlie and seeing their familiarity evolve. A surprise favourite from the year!
