Up All Night with a Good Duke is a sizzling Victorian romance that grounds us with little period details while not limiting us to common attitudes of the time. Sometimes, I just want people to wear period dress at a train station without a lot of patriarchal bullshit coming along, too. And this book made that happen for me. Artemis is a finishing school teacher with a secret identity (Lydia Lovelace, Gothic romance author) and a hidden agenda (opening a women's college). Neither of these things leaves room for the typical manhunting expected of a woman her age. Instead, Artemis intends to sail into spinsterhood with her bookish friends at her side, achieving her goals and maintaining her independence. That doesn't mean she lacks interest in the opposite sex at a more basic level. In fact, as Artemis endures the Season to support her anxious friend and to seek a benefactress for her college, she finds herself attracted to Dominic Winters, Duke of Dartmoor. Dominic is braving the Marriage Mart because it's become clear that his teenage daughter is lonely and acting out. He needs to repair their family's reputation for her sake, banishing the specter of his first wife's disappearance a decade ago. Society gossip has long reported that the disappearance was at Dominic's behest, a story that his brother-in-law keeps alive in the public consciousness.

The chemistry and banter are there from the beginning. The characters' joy at speaking to one another is infectious. This very chemistry is what carries familiar tropes through with vitality and fun. The book brings up the importance of seeking consent for your trope-y schemes. Don't rope someone into some rom-com chicanery without letting them know the stakes and what is needed from them so they can decide if they want to participate. After this conversation takes place, Dominic and Artemis work together to stage Artemis' ruination, and never has that trope been carried out in such a light-hearted and funny way. There's also an engagement of convenience and a nursing back to health plot, both of which I give all the stars.

Beyond the excellence of the romance, the author captures her characters and situations with heart and realness. Dominic has big "dad of a teenager" energy and has a stalwart, honorable personality. He's a bit stern and spread thin, but he's not cold or emotionally repressed. Artemis is feisty and willful without being needlessly thoughtless and selfish. She seeks out mischief without losing sight of her aspirations. She doesn't let society dictate who she will be, but she is also savvy and clever. There are also some villainous characters I loved to hate, but I don't want to give anything away on that front. The author captures certain scenes with a touch of Gothic ambience perfect for a secret penny dreadful writer to enjoy. With others, the romantic elements are dialed up, sweet and heartfelt. And she does ~not~ neglect the steamy scenes between Artemis and Dominic, either.

In terms of deeper elements, note a trigger warning for postpartum depression and the loss of a child. I felt that the author handled the characters' grief with the gravitas it deserves and honors their complicated feelings and experiences. There's also a plot with gaslighting and harassment that shows the ugly side of society. This is another area where I found the author's take thoughtful, and it leaves Artemis the space to emerge triumphant and vindicated after a difficult road.

I am excited to read more from this series. It's just the sort of character-driven, forward-thinking historical romance that revives my faith in the genre. Thanks to Sourcebooks Casablanca for my copy to read and review!

As a fan of regency novels, I truly enjoy when the heroes are more forward thinking. As in Up All Night With the Good Duke, Artemis a blue stocking and Dom a well read and open minded Duke. This book had a meet cute, fake engagement, and fun secondary characters.

This set of characters were a fun start and I cannot wait to see the next in the series.

I very much enjoyed reading this book, the first in a new series. Artemis Jones is a teacher in a girl's finishing school, but unknown to all but her publisher she is also the authoress of a series of gothic romance novels. The beginning of the book even sounded like how one of those books would have read, though the tone changed as the book progressed. Because of her parent's relationship (not a love match) and having been seduced and discarded by a cad who took her innocent, she doesn't believe in love and HEA, except in her novels and has no plans to ever marry. Her dreams is to open her own college for women- that will teach the same subjects taught to men. She has two close friends who also are wary of marriage, hence the Byronic Book Club.

The romance between her and Dominic Winters, the fifth Duke of Dartmoor is unusual. The poor man's beloved wife suffered from post Postpartum depression, undiagnosed at the time. She appears to have killed herself and her brother, who refused to accept the truth had spread malicious lies about the Duke, not carrying how it would also affect his niece. The Duke has been very lonely, and while Artemis is not the kind of woman he would have looked for in a duchess, she is exactly what he needs.

I liked the story line, the characters and the banter between them. And there is a villain who puts them all in danger. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

I read an ARC provided by the publisher vis NetGalley.com. This I my unbiased and voluntary review.

Historical Romance is not usually my jam because it is usually just very bland for me. The FMC was very quirky and could honestly work in a contemporary book which is cool. The spice was... there (I guess) but not in a fan yourself with your kindle kind of way. There were some really cute moments though like COME ON!?!? KISSES IN THE BOOKSHELVES?!?!?

If you like historical romances you would like this because even as a lesbian he did infact make me swoon just a lil.

I have been provided with a review copy of Up All Night with a Good Duke from NetGalley for an impartial review. Oh my gosh this story was just epic. I just couldn’t put this story down and I was just captivated by everything that was taking place. The author truly outdid herself with this story. This story just had my emotions all over the place and I am so sad to see this book end. I just can’t wait to see what’s next from this author.

“Books were never the problem. Ignorance and prejudice and blatant narrow-mindedness were, and the world would be a better place without them.”

I loved this passage that brilliantly summarizes one of the themes of the book. Artemis, the heroine, is a gorgeous bluestocking that secretly writes gothic novels and wants to open a women’s college. She’s smart and passionate and the perfect match for Dominic, who’s been unfairly named the Dastardly Duke of Dartmoor, but who in reality is a very good and sweet man with a tragic past. I loved both characters very much and I loved the lively banter between the two and the other characters of the book even more. The book is beautifully written, with vivid descriptions and true-to-life characters and funny moments. I definitely look forward to the next book of the series!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Artemis and Dominic have a wonderful love story. Amy Rose Bennett never disappoints and this book didn't either. Readers will love Artemis going through the London Season.

Beautiful cover. Interesting concept but was difficult initially to get into. Overall an ok read. Might read her work again.

Artemis is a school teacher during the day and a gothic novel author in secret. She dreams of having her own women's school. When her cousin needs her to help with her coming out during the season, Artemis agrees to help her. The problem is that her aunt tries to get her to marry and she is a dedicated spinster. Dominic is a duke with a 15 year old daughter he needs a wife to help him out. He is known as the dastardly duke for killing his mad wife so their are no brides wanting him. Dominic and Artemis are practically made for each other. A good read.

I received a copy of this book via Netgalley.

𝗨𝗣 𝗔𝗟𝗟 𝗡𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧 𝗪𝗜𝗧𝗛 𝗔 𝗚𝗢𝗢𝗗 𝗗𝗨𝗞𝗘 is the first book in Amy Rose Bennett’s latest series - The Byronic Book Club and was a no brainer read for me.

I am a huge fan of historical romance reads and when they are done with an interesting twist, I am one happy lady. Artemis is an interesting character, teacher by day, writer by night. She is a treat and I enjoyed her quirkiness. Dominic is my kind of Duke. - a single dad looking for help with his adolescent daughter and a second wife. Yes, please! I enjoyed reading their love story and couldn’t get enough of them.

I look forward to reading more in this series. I’m giving 𝗨𝗣 𝗔𝗟𝗟 𝗡𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧 𝗪𝗜𝗧𝗛 𝗔 𝗚𝗢𝗢𝗗 𝗗𝗨𝗞𝗘 the judy.ann.loves.books stamp of approval, TBR and Enjoy!

This book has all the right ingredients for a really good soup ... erm, story.
A single-dad duke with a just dubious enough reputation to make him deliciously sexy. A tight group of smart female friends. Flirty banter and a solid enough plot that didn't make me roll my eyes ... too many books have been making me have that reaction of late.

All in all, I stayed Up All Night With a Good Book!

If you're looking for a lot of drama in your Historical Romance, this one's for you! I loved both Artemis and Dominic! Bluestockings heroines are one of my favorite troupes and of course, you can't go wrong with a handsome Duke. The end was A LOT of drama but I still enjoyed it and I can't wait to pick up the next book in the series.

This is my first time reading anything by this author. I'm already looking forward to anything else she writes! Her characters in this book provide witty word play and a brilliant bookstore banter, as well as hot steamy kisses among the bookshelves.

Artemis Jones chooses to resign her position at Avon academy to help a friend forced to endure the London season. She also happens to be a secret author for a Gothic novels. She has no intention of marrying, but decides to pursue a plan of pretend ruination to stop her aunt from bothering her.

Dominic Winters, 5th Duke of Dartmoor, has no plans to remarry. In fact he's buried himself in his work for his estates for years. Because of his reputation as the "Dasterly Duke of Dartmoor," He has isolated himself since his first wife's death. Realizing that he is getting older, he decides to find a new wife to help with his 15-year-old daughter and hopefully get a male heir.

Artemis and Dominic have a meet cute in the rain at the train station. It's adorable how their dialogue is brilliant and flirtatious from the beginning.

Dominic sees Artemis again at the first ball that he attends, and he's singles her out for a dance. For all of his reputation, he is a gentleman and fairly open-minded for the time period.

When Artemis states her plans of pretend ruination, Dominic decides to play along. He even throws in one of Artemis's dreams to encourage her in the process.

This book has so many things I love! Witty banter. Kisses amongst the bookshelves. Strong male lead who wants to do his best by the people in his life. A female lead who has passions that she is actively pursuing and doesn't need a man to do them.

There is a villain in this book, which adds a nice element of foil to the male lead. There were elements of the villain that I could have seen even more information on, but his character was well written for his purpose.

I am very much looking forward to reading more by Amy Rose Bennett. If all of her books have this much witty banter and glorious good times, I am in!

THE HERO
Dominic Winters, the Duke of Dartmoor, lost his first wife tragically and mysteriously. Since she died, he has thrown himself into his work and raising his daughter. But Celeste is older now and rebelling against her loneliness and confinement. He has his hands full, but suddenly Artemis stumbles into his life and she brings an energy he hasn’t felt in a long time and he can’t stop thinking about her.

THE HEROINE
Artemis Jones is an independent woman who never plans to get married and has hopes to open a college for women. She is also a secret author of Gothic romance novels! She lost her heart (and her virtue) when she was making her debut and has decided to never get married.

THE PLOT
Artemis comes up with this crazy idea to fake a compromising situation where her aunt discovers them and disowns Artemis and she can finally be left alone in peace. But Dominic has other plans and a fake engagement is born and slowly he chips away at Artemis’s resolve to remain single.
Artemis and Dominic are just to cute together! They have the best flirty banter and are honest with each other (which is a refreshing change), no hidden feelings. This was a pretty dynamic story with many interweaving plot lines…the budding romance between Dominic and Artemis, Artemis’s sisters debut, Dominic’s daughters rebellion, the snooty governess, the evil brother-in-law…as I list them out, I feel like I should be overwhelmed, but it really wasn’t and hopefully it is just great setup for future books in the series!

TROPES
Historical Romance, Victorian Era, Beta Hero, Single Dad Hero, Titled Hero, Widowed Hero, Bluestocking Heroine, Bookworm Heroine, Experienced Heroine, Independent Heroine, Spinster Heroine, Working Heroine, Fake Relationship, Hidden Identity, author, orphaned

Title: Up All Night With A Good Duke
Author: Amy Rose Bennett
Pages: 359

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

~
Artemis Jones is looking for a way to realise her dream of opening her own academic ladies' collage. She is finishing school teacher by day and Gothic Romance writer by night. When she is called by a friend in need to London, she sees this as an opportunity to get everything she's ever dreamt of (meaning a donor for her school).

Dominc Winters, Duke of Dartmoor also known as the Dastardly Duke, is looking for a wife. He needs a heir and someone that can help him with his teenage daughter. He doesn't know how he'll accomplish this feat, until he meets Artemis Jones and knows exactly what needs to happen.

This absolutely stunning book was just everything I needed and more. Artemis is such a fun character, comfortable with who she is and what she wants. She is a brilliant writer and quite proud of what she accomplished, which she should be. (Seriously, I would read her books) 😅

Also the way Artemis and Dominic's daughter are just amazing together made my heart so happy.

Dominic is just as much fun character. He truly loves his daughter and only wants what's best for her. I adore their journey of trying to understand one another. Dominic also had to learn to not judge a book by its cover (literally) and it was so well done (I am a sucker for this trope) 😅.

Also the chemistry between Artemis and Dominic was just top tier. The spice scenes were just so perfectly done.

Include a mystery plot alongside the romance and I am 100% sold!

~ A definite recommend ~

Really sweet historical romance. I loved both Artemis and Dominic. Their relationship, while began as a convenience for them both, was well done. No long drawn out issues that dragged the story down. This was my first book by the author but will definitely not be the last, looking forward to the next in the series.

This was a delightful historical romance! I really enjoyed the fact that we had a heroine who was a gothic romance writer. A spicy love story, some entertaining side characters, and a wonderful regency setting. I'll be reading book two!

Based on the title and cover I really expected this book to be different – spicier, entertaining, witty.

It was the complete opposite. For me, it was quite dull.

The plot about him murdering his wife was not developed.

The plot of his daughter not liking Artemis was not developed.

I can’t write a lot of these examples because I’ve read this book months ago but the fact that I barely remember this book and that I gave it 2.5 stars tells a lot.

Really disappointed.

The first book in the Byronic Book Club series features a strong, opinionated heroine. Artemis Jones is a “bluestocking,” much to the dismay of her aunt and sister. She has no desire to marry. Instead, her dream is to open an academic ladies college. But her meager pay as a teacher and as the secret author of Gothic romances is not enough to finance a school.

When her friend is forced by her father to have a season in society in order to find a wealthy husband, she begs Artemis to come to London, too, and offer support. Though Artemis’ own season several years ago ended disastrously, she agrees. She decides that while there, she can discreetly seek a wealthy woman to be her school’s patron.

When Artemis arrives, she literally runs into Dominic Winters while hailing a coach. The sparks between them are immediate.

Dominic does not tell her he is the Duke of Dartmoor, also known to society as the Dastardly Duke because of rumors that he murdered his wife years ago. He is in town to find a wife who can provide an heir and help him with his rebellious daughter. He is attracted and intrigued by Artemis.

Attending a ball with her friend, Artemis is shocked when Dominic appears and is introduced as a duke. He immediately seeks her out for a dance, setting off gossip.

Her aunt’s scandalized reaction puts an idea in Artemis’ head. She asks Dominic to compromise her in a strategically planned manner so her aunt will be convinced that Artemis is ruined and will stop hounding her to get married.

Dominic agrees only if Artemis uses her academic background to provide advice and direction to his daughter.

However, Artemis’ “ruination” does not quite go according to plan when, faced by the aunt’s outrage, Dominic’s honor has him making a marriage offer instead. He explains to Artemis that she can reject the Dastardly Duke with no blame from society once she finds a patron.

But the more time the two spend together, the more they keep falling into passionate embraces. Besides the physical attraction, they also enjoy each other’s company and their lively, witty conversations.

Dominic may be befuddled when it comes to his teen daughter, but he is deliciously sure of himself with Artemis. She realizes she is falling for him, but can a Duke fall for a bluestocking who writes scandalous romances?

Artemis’ views seem bold for the time period the book is set in, but the author has created a forward-thinking hero who is her match.

Nothing beats starting a historical romance and immediately 1. It making you that giddy sort of happy 2. Instantly falling in love with the heroine

And the dynamic completely working for you too. There was a lot going on here but I loved it all so very much.

Amy Rose Bennett is a new to me author and I found her writing fantastic! With quote after amazing quote, engaging dialogue, witty banter, and remarkable flow and ease within her writing I was hooked!

Add to that an amazing storyline (shes a secret romance writer who doesn’t want to marry, he’s a single dad/duke who needs a wife to help raise his daughter the rest is fate), a kickass heroine, and a HEA that has my heart full with happiness, I loved every single minute of this 🥰
