DNF - Loved the premise behind this book & perhaps, had I read the other works within this series I might have adored this installment too! This isn't necessarily a dig at this book in particular but, I am not someone for whom this genre & the particulars of this story, imparts much enjoyment.
This has got to be one of the most refreshing reads I have read in a long while. This is the third book in the DS Cross series but the first I have read (I have since downloaded books #1 & #2) but it didnt affect the read at all.
DS George Cross is what you call the Champion of the Outsider. An outsider himself after his Autism diagnosis, Cross is rude, abrasive and awkward with people but my God is he one hell of a Detective. His dogged pursuit of the truth is what makes him the Detective with the best conviction rate on the Bristol force.
In this book Cross is investigating the closed case of an apparent suicide of a young woman named Flick who has a long history of drug abuse. The coroner rules suicide but the womans mother Sandra Wilson thinks otherwise, her daughter had been clean for two years. With no weapons, fingerprints and no witnesses Cross has to untangle the truth but to do this he has to go against and defy his bosses, even if it means the 3nd of his career.
I loved the interactions Cross had with his team in the Major Crimes Unit, the way they handled his 'ways' and were sympathetic to his nuances that are typical to the spectrum. Even the characters that were less positive were integral as they were then briefed on autistic tendencies.
This is one hell of a gripping read that heads off into surprising directions with unexpected twists that actually shocked me which I've found is harder to do the older I get 😂
As a mother to a high functioning autistic child I found this so refreshing, well researched and sympathetic to the spectrum.
I honestly can't recommend this book and the series enough, I will be waiting in anticipation for the next installment.
Huge thanks to netgalley and Head of Zeus for the ARC.
Thank you Head of Zeus and Netgalley for this Arc.
This is the first book I have read by Tim and won't be the last - I did not realise it was third in a series but it didn't seem to matter - I now need 1 and 2!
This really didn't disappoint and I love the main character of Cross. The story had lots of twists and turns and for once I didn't guess the ending of a book which is good for me and made it more enjoyable.
Highly recommend and I now need the first two and the next one!
The patient by Tim Sullivan introduced me to DS George Cross and what a treat. Great storyline with quirky characters and great relationships, getting crime solved. This was a terrific read. All the elements of a whodunnit with lots of action. A resounding four star read
This book initially appealed to me because the detective in this series, DS Cross is on the Autistic Spectrum. I was intrigued as to how accurately the Author would write this character. I am pleased to say, I considered the writing to be knowledgeable of Autism and written with real understanding of people who are Autistic. I wasn't aware until I'd finished the book that the Author Tim Sullivan is also a screen writer and has 'Letters to Juliet' in his credit, plus many more.
This is the third book in the DS Cross series. I have not read the previous two, and that did not seem to matter at all to book 3. I have now added book 1 and 2 to my ever growing TBR list!
The story begins when the mother of a dead girl is persistent in the police station that her daughter did not commit suicide as the coroners have concluded, but that she was murdered. It took DS Cross to finally listen to the woman and take her concerns on. We continue to follow DS Cross and his colleagues as they investigate those that Flick, (the deceased) knew and had been around recently.
I really enjoyed the different approach that Cross took in his investigations and the way he thought about the case. His colleagues MacKenzie and Ottey are also great characters who I can see making a better and better team as the series continues. (which I hope it will).
There is a theme that goes through the book, that would be a great discussion point for book clubs, and it would have been a really good book to buddy read, but unfortunately this was not part of my book club or buddy read. It did make me think about the points myself though.
A large part of the book was about Cross and his thoughts, actions and beliefs. I feel like I know this character pretty well now, and hope to see more of him in future books in this series. I liked his colleagues Ottey and MacKenzie, but don't feel I know them so well. This was purposely done I think to show DS Cross' personality, but I hope they become stars of the show in future books.
The book was based in Bristol, so some of the areas that were spoken of were familiar to me. I find this always makes a book slightly more relatable.
Highly recommended to fans of detective stories, thrillers and books with discussion topics within the theme. I loved it. Can't wait for book 4 to be written....(please!).
Superb summer thriller. This is the third in the DC Cross thriller series, but can be read as a standalone. DC Cross is fast becoming my favourite detective with his wry sense of humour and quick intelligence. He is on the Spectrum and can pick up on the finer details that others miss. He works alongside a wily partner, who sees his quirks and his genius. They make a dynamic pair, even if DC Cross doesn't reveal much of his suspicions and keeps things close to his chest until he is sure. When a desperate mother approaches the station for umpteenth time professing the death of her daughter wasn't suicide DC Cross gives her the time and space to explain. Dismissed as an ex-junkie whonhas relapsed and died by accidental suicide, DC Cross picks up on one fine detail that doesn't fit. This leads to lots more little inconsistencies. An intelligent, humorous and twisty read. I loved deciphering the clues #thepatient #timsullivan #dccross #dccrossthriller #policethriller #crimethriller #netgalley
‘No fingerprints. No weapon. No witnesses. Can DS Cross prove it was murder?’
My thanks to Head of Zeus Aries for an eARC via NetGalley of ‘The Patient’ by Tim Sullivan in exchange for an honest review.
This is Book 3 in Sullivan’s series of police procedurals featuring DS George Cross of the Bristol Crime Unit. This was my first encounter with DS Cross though as with most modern crime series ‘The Patient’ worked fine as a standalone.
DS George Cross finds interacting with people difficult yet his keen logical mind and dogged pursuit of the truth means that his conviction rate is the best on the force. Being an outsider himself, DS Cross is drawn to cases that involve those who are voiceless and feel dispossessed.
Sandra Wilson is a grieving mother who is convinced that her daughter’s death was murder and not suicide as was ruled. While Felicia (Flick) did have a history of drug use she had been clean for years and was having success with a new therapy.
Cross manages to reopen the case though only has a short period before his bosses shut down his investigation.
I found this an intricately plotted police procedural that took a direction I wasn’t expecting. No spoilers though..
Once I started reading I couldn’t put ‘The Patient’ down and finished it in the course of a day. I am now interested in reading the two earlier books as well as future titles in the series.
4.5 stars rounded up to 5.
D'S George Cross is an unusual detective with an eye for detail and unusual facts that others don't pick up. A good story with lots of twists.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
This is the first book by Tim Sullivan which I have read and it didn't disappoint!!
I absolutely loved the main character "Cross" and would like to read much more about him.
The book had lots of twists and turns and I didn't guess the ending at all!!
A great fantastic read... a page turner!
Really enjoyed this book. Its not your typical police thriller for a start. Di George Cross is a quirky character, on the spectrum who has an unuayal approach both to his colleagues and the cases he is assigned. His unorthodox approach is gated by some but his solve rate is one if the best. What do you do when confronted by a grieving mum who believes that her addict daughter who allegedly died from an overdose has been murdered. When all around her dismiss her claims George insists on taking on the case with unexpected and far reaching results. Full of twists and turns. Highly recommended.
Thanks to Netgalley for a copy of this book for an honest review.
Such an interesting take on crime fiction. Really enjoyed reading about Cross's thoughts on interactions and his processes leading to successful outcomes. Will read other books in this series.
DS George Cross is a detective with attention to detail., When a women's death is ruled as suicide the mother questions whether this is right. DS George Cross discovers there is more to this then meets the eye and despite being closed it becomes clear this is a murder. This is sensitively written around a character with aspergis, his relation with his dad and colleagues and how his skill uncovers the truth. Brilliant from start to finish.
Really enjoyed this book. Loved detective Cross, who is on the spectrum and follows the facts and doesn’t have the emotions to get in the way of his decision making. His partner and other colleagues are very supportive and understand his weaknesses and his strengths and these relationships were very warm.. Raced through this and would definitely be wanting to read the next in the series. 5 stars
Thank you to Netgalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is the first time I have read anything by this author, but it won't be my last.
A great police procedural full f twists and turns with good characters. Recommended
A good story that kept me intrigued all the way through and held my attention, enjoyed it and would recommend it …
Thank you Netgalley, Head Of Zues and Tim Sullivan for the ARC of this book
This book is available now!
I found this book to be such a hidden gem. I didn't realise this was the 3rd book in the series but you can literally pick it up and read it without missing out.
I enjoyed the style, the pace, the plot and the character development within the book.
I am now going to read the other 2 books in the series before this since i enjoyed this one so much! Thank you!
I must apologise for not reviewing before the publication date. I was so intrigued by George Cross that I decided to read the first two books before starting The Patient.
I love this police procedural series. George has Aspergers which means he is focused eccentric and very difficult to work with!
Thankfully he has colleagues that value him and his unswerving tenacity to solve cases that would otherwise go unsolved or ignored.
We also learn about his life and family background which was why I was so glad I read the earlier books first. Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for giving me an advance copy of this book for an unbiased review. When is book 4 please.
A very easy (and rare) 5 stars from me.
I absolutely adored Cross' character. He made me smile and almost cry at the same time and I thought it was so clever of the writer to have him to adopt the very traits needed to solve the crime.
My initial thought was that it wouldn't be much of a basis to build an entire novel on, considering that it was only a hunch at first but I couldn't be more wrong.
Beautifully written with excellent pace and an outstanding conclusion.
Many, many thanks
This is the first book of the series I have read not realising there were two more before this. I must say it did not spoil the story as the past did not resonate in this one. DS Cross is a policeman in Bristol. As you read the book you realise he is on the autistic spectrum due to the way he looks and sees things and this makes him a very good policeman. Sandra Wilson has been at the police station for several days which George noticed. One day he sees her outside the station in the rain and goes to see her and ask why she is hanging around. She was trying to get someone to listen to her case but was asked to leave the station. It transpires that her daughter had passed away and it has been put down as a suicide as she is a recovering drug addict. She is absolutely convinced that it was murder and this is just the sort of thing DS Cross likes to tackle. DS Cross and his partner Josie Ottey start to investigate the case much to the annoyance of the Detective who put it down to suicide and DI Carson who is in charge as he is thinks they could be better placed to deal with new cases but Cross does not give into peer pressure. As the story progresses the puzzle becomes more and more intriguing for him. He also has the help of Alice McKenzie – between Ottey and McKenzie they help Cross see his failings in the way he approaches people and keep him as grounded as they can. The book twists and turns and the characters are all interesting in their own right. Cross follows the puzzles until he finds who has been committing the murders – I did not see that coming – and this leads to another anomaly which was interesting. His interview techniques are interesting as he will not be persuaded to go off on a tangent. The story is mainly about addicts and whether they can be healed and also deals with assisted suicide being legal – a debate which can continue for ever. Read this book it is a page turner
The patient is Tim Sullivan’s third novel in the DS Cross series. Despite not having read the previous two novels I found this an intriguing and interesting read. Cross is a good character that I enjoyed getting to know and I would certainly read more books from this series.
