Well done book that took me a few chapters to get into it. However when I did I enjoyed it. Just a bit slow at the beginning.
I found How To Spot A Psychopath an intriguing debut. It had a unique premise and some nice twists.
I love dual timelines in a thriller and felt this was done well. I feel the characters could have had a little more depth but this is book 1 of 2 so that may come in the second one.
I especially loved the psychological undercurrents and I was compelled to read to the end to find out what happened. I will keenly read the second book in this series!
Fans of The Silent Patient would enjoy this one.
3.5 stars rounded up.
I have sketchy feeling about this writing. The author decided to divide all normal people, (those with psychological issues need not apply), into four "color" groups, such as Red people, Green people etc.
Of course there is a detailed description of each of these types and the author agrees you can have mixed types.
That's all kind of sexy but hard to agree with.
How all that fits in with Spotting Psychopaths is anybody's guess, since those folks aren't included.
I think it's psychobabble. And I've never used that word before.
A n ex FBI book has written this and it’s pretty tense. As it’s factual! It has a high number of traits but I’d say take some of it with a pinch of salt. Lots of people have these traits and psychopaths are good at mimicking others. That said I loved this!
Jessica Green is a suspect in the disappearance of 4-year-old Mia, daughter of Holly and friend of Jessica's own young daughter, but Jessica's not talking. She gets transferred from the remand center to the Whitner Psychiatric Hospital under the care of Dr. Oscar de la Nuit, a forensic psychiatrist, and she begins to open up to him.
The story is told in chapters flagged as "Then" mostly from Jessica's point of view and "Now" mostly from Oscar's point of view until they converge. I was going merrily along and thinking 'Hey, this book isn't bad' when it suddenly seemed to fall apart about 2/3 of the way through. Sections of dialogue seemed dragged out and then out of the blue Oscar started having reminiscenses about a young girl named Lila. I searched through the book but couldn't find any previous reference to her but I think she may have been Oscar's sister and maybe she died? I actually laughed out loud when Ray (Mia's father) was in Jessica's house and suddenly said, "I need to piss--where's your bathroom?"! In spite of its shortcomings, the book wasn't horrible but if it was tightened up a bit with less repetition, I'd give it a higher rating. Oscar was an interesting main character but I wasn't too crazy about Jessica. It was a fairly quick read and I never considered dnf-ing it. Also didn't care much for the ending where we learn what happened to Mia. I give this 2-1/2 stars rounded up to 3 but there are lots of 4 and 5 star reviews you should probably check out.
Thank you to TBR, Independent Book Publishers Association, via Netgalley for the opportunity to read this novel. All opinions expressed are my own.
Holy moly what a fabulous book! Thank you so much @zooloosbooktours @mqwebbauthor for the invite for this brilliant book.
Not ashamed to say I devoured this book in just one day. It was so hard to put down. I had a few different scenarios of how it would end, pleased to say one of them was correct 😀. I was itching to get to the finish line to find out. If you loved The Silent Patient you will absolutely love this one.
I took an instant dislike to the character Holly she was shady from the start. I was also found Jess a bit questionable to begin with too. Just shows this book will make you question everyone!!
Thank you Netgalley for my free ARC! I liked this book and it kept my attention, It was a bit predictable. Overall a decent read. I rate it a 3.1
A suspenseful psychological drama that revolves a missing child case and the doctor that help solve the case. In the end, it leaves you wondering if you could ever know who someone is. It was a battle of wills and kept you guessing until the end. The writing is tight and crisp, the reading flows very well. Finished reading in a couple of sittings.
This book was great. It takes place in two different timelines, then and now. The overlap between the two made it a very intriguing read. Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down, I had to know how it ended. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced reader copy.
How to Spot a Psychopath by MQ Webb was a great read. I highly recommend it to my fellow readers. It was accurate and made my laugh at points. I will look for other books by MQ Webb.
This book takes unreliable narrator on a long, winding trip. This book could definitely be cut down, enhancing the suspense and a more driven plot.
Four year old Mia goes missing - on a playdate. Great premise - her mother, Holly becomes obsessed with Jessica. She must know something. But Jess isn't talking.
Psychiatrist Dr de la Nuit determines to help Jessica, convinced she wants to aid the search.
But does she?
Creative and realistic plot.
Mia goes missing and Jess is our main suspect. She refuses to talk when taken into custody.
Although plot is fast paced and curious, this work feels like an emulation of the Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides. It was difficult to see past my natural association of the two works.
The plot felt repetitive, almost to the point of disinterest.
I would be curious to read a different work by this author. The writing has potential with excellent room to grow.
I received a gifted copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review as part of the book tour hosted by Zooloos Book Tours.
How to spot A psychopath is a gripping thriller told over a dual timeline narrative. As a debut I think this book has been really well thought out and written and look forward to reading more from this author.
Full of suspenseful twists, this book has you rethinking at every chapter.
Mia (a year year old girl) goes missing from her friend Zoe (Jessica Greens house). But Jessica isn't talking (literally) when taken into custody on suspicion of being involved. Transfered under Oscar de la Nuits care, he desperately tries to get Jessica to talk and tell the truth of what has happened to Mia. But the clock is ticking and this case brings forth demons of his own and he finds himself pushing for redemption for Jessica and himself. Jessica talks to Oscar more than she will speak to anyone else - but Oscar doesn't think she really knows what happened to Mia.
This is such a twisty, turny read and had me guessing all the way! Definitely one to add to your reading list, and I look forward to learning more of Oscar in the future!
This was an excellent read, full of twists you won't see coming. Partway through, I was convinced I knew how it would end and was surprised to find out I was wrong. A very enjoyable book and I look forward to reading others by this author.
First, I want to thank MQ Webb, TBR, NetGalley and Zooloo Book Tours for providing me with this book so I can bring you this review.
O.M.G. MQ Webb is a brilliant genius when it comes to writing psychological thrillers!! How to Spot a Psychopath is a 5 star must read book that has best sellers all over it! I absolutely loved the deep, emotional, twisted, heartbreaking and oh so original storylines.
MQ Webb took the opportunity to address some important mental health issues and other medical issues.
I am obsessed with reading psychological thrillers and missing person cases. MQ Webb created a storyline unlike any other storyline I had ever read before! I was literally blown away and my mind is still spinning! There were so many layers that went into the storyline as so many characters were involved. It was just so in-depth and twisted and I loved every minute of it!
The budding relationship of Oscar and Hayley made me smile.
I'm a fan of reading psychological and suspense thrillers, specifically psychopaths.
I'm fond of knowing what's in their minds and how their brains work. I know it's crazy, but there is really something that pulls me to them. 😅
That's why when I received this copy for free, I was truly ecstatic.
The story is about Jessica Green, who was accused of murdering Mia, a four-year-old classmate of her daughter, Zoe. But what really hooked me was that Jessica didn't speak to anyone or defend herself about the crime. She didn't even want her family or friends to talk to her or visit her. So what's she hiding?🤔
Enter Dr. Oscar Dela Nuit, a psychiatrist who asked to transfer Jessica to their center to get to know her, find the truth and perhaps save her.
While reading the book, one of the characters actually reminded me of Amber Heard. I couldn't help it because of the way she manipulated people and how she kept on saying she was a victim of abuse. As in, WTF!😳
The ending was something hopeful for me because there was healing and forgiveness with both the leading characters, yet I found it kind of rushed and something was missing. I enjoyed reading this first story in the series! I'm looking forward to the next one!
Thank you to TBR and Netgalley for the wonderful ARC!
This was a fast-paced read. Once I started reading, I couldn’t stop turning the pages, I had to find out what happened!
This book has two main perspectives, Jess who is in a facility after Mia goes missing on a play date at her house, and Oscar, her psychiatrist.
From the beginning, you’re guessing what happened to Mia, and who’s responsible.
Jess thinks Mia’s mother Holly might be a psychopath, but pretty soon Jess starts questioning herself. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear why Jess won’t talk about Mia’s disappearance, and whether she’s responsible for it or not.
I did not expect the ending, and I can usually guess them so it was a nice surprise
highly recommend to any psychological thriller fans or crime junkies like me.
Thanks to netgalley and publisher for providing an e-gallery for my honest review. My opinions are my own.
As far as I'm aware this is the first book in a new series featuring Dr Oscar de la Nuit.
The premise of the story was fantastic and my kinda read. It did go a little slow in places, but soon picked up pace, by which time the suspense had built, the adrenalin was flowing and my nerves shot to pieces.
The characters were fabulously flawed and are all hiding their own secrets, even Oscar.
Full of psychological undercurrents, twists and turns made this a highly enjoyable debut read.
Many thanks to Random Things Tours for my tour spot.
Rating ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Very compelling and suspenseful read, I love the way it was written and it had the right amount of twists and turns. I didnt know what to expect eith this book but it exceeded the expectations I did have
Intriguing and fast paced! There is just something so compelling about psychopaths in a thriller. People who loved the Silent Patient might enjoy this one.
