The Emma Project is the fourth and final book in Sonali Dev's Jane Austen adaptations, featuring the Rajes, an Indian-American family. Honestly, the first three in the series weren't my favorite, but I was pleasantly surprised by The Emma Project and actually thoroughly enjoyed it. It follows the youngest Raje, Vansh, and a Raje family friend, Naina (who was featured in the 3rd book as well).
While this book has the same characters and premise of the rest of the series (and starts at the end of the third novel), it almost seems entirely different than the other three. For one thing, this book actually has some spice in it, while the other three were pretty chaste in description. I also feel like there were some fantastic side characters that really beefed up the story. Hari warms my heart, and more on Esha later.
Vansh and Naina have a wonderful romance full of shared ambition and chemistry. This book had a healthy amount of past trauma and grief mixed in with real-time conflict and resolution (I did feel that the first three books in the series were piled with trauma and tragedy, but maybe that's just me). I enjoyed the progression of Naina and Vansh, their secret relationship, business partnership, and familial challenges.
Let's talk about Esha. I loved her story and kept finding myself looking for more. Like many others, I want more, and wish that Esha and Siddartha's story were expanded into their own book, or at least a novella to expand.
Overall, I enjoyed the further development of the Raje family dynamic, and learning more about Naina and her past, shedding more light on her actions in the previous book. Please check out the content warnings before choosing to read this book!

TW (abuse). This book was hard for me because of the themes of abuse, but otherwise I enjoyed the unique retelling and representation in this read. Fans of Sonali Dev will not be disappointed. Thank you for access to the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Sonali Dev's Jane Austen retellings are so great. Her retelling of Emma didn't disappoint. It was the perfect wrap-up to the Raje family series. I love how she can make the characters come to life and be relatable. The chemistry between Naina and Vansh was so great. I highly recommend this book but also the whole series especially if you love Jane Austen novels.
This is #4 in a series, but can absolutely be read as a standalone.
Naina and Yash were together for 10 years- their families thought they'd marry and seal the families together. Until they broke it off. Yash is now governor of California and the families think it is so embarrassing they broke up. No one can accept that the whole relationship was a sham to shut up the parents- they were only just best friends.
Now, Naina and Yash's brother Vansh have found themselves together. There is heat. Alot of attraction. How can this be?? Naina is 10 years older than Vansh and seen him in diapers! The families are once again outraged. Its enough that they are working on projects together, but a relationship is out of the question. Or is it?
I enjoyed reading The Emma Project. I didn't love the premise of the book (come to think of it, I didn't love the premise of Emma either - heh). I did love the characters of Naina and Vansh and their families. I also absolutely loved the ending - it was very satisfying. Definitely recommend!
I received an advance copy of this book free in exchange for my honest review.
This was a fun culmination to Sonali Dev's Jane Austen retellings. Light, easy, with plenty of sizzle, these modern retellings are perfect for Jane Austen fan's who enjoy a modern romance.
Super torn by this last installment in the Rajes series! O e one hand, I loved reading about Esha, Sid, and how everyone else is doing. Also, I always wanted both Naina and Vansh to get stories. I did not expect them to get a story together. They were fine. I had a real problem with how judgmental Naina is for over half the book. And how his sisters are also pretty bad. But, the epilogue had me feeling all the warm and fuzzies.
THANK YOU avon and netgalley for this eARC!
Another fantastic tale to finish off this delightful series! I absolutely love the way Sonali Dev reworks Jane Austen's classics into modern stories that are just, if not more, compelling. Every one of her characters could walk off the page and so much of the source materials' fun and frustration is perfectly translated.
In this final story, Vansh is looking for his next project, and Naina is reeling from the events of the previous book and just about to get her philanthropic venture off the ground. Obviously, they will be thrown together in unexpected ways, and the big Raje family will be poking their noses all over the place and there will be mouthwatering descriptions of Indian food and in this book especially, a celebration of Indian clothes and dancing! Such a treat!!! For me, this book stands up as its own story the best of the rest of them, maybe because it is the least faithful to Austen's Emma. The influence is clear but I was able to find far fewer exact parallels between the whole storylines.
The romance and friendships in the book were lovely and HOT and fun, but the rest of the plot required a little too much suspension of disbelief for me to give this a full 5 stars. Maybe it's not even suspension of disbelief but I needed so many more details to buy the philanthropic ventures and the whole process of making the things happen. The projects Vansh and Naina were undertaking in this were just so enormous that I couldn't really buy it, and the whole time I was reading I knew that the details of their work were obviously not important but it did haunt me anyway.
Wonderful series wonderful story enjoyed every page. The characters come alive involving me in their Astoria their lives.Highly recommend cthe series the author #netgalley#avonuk
With every book I read by Sonali Dev, it is further shown to me why she has become one of my favorite authors. ❤️ This book is no different. I was drawn in from the first page and didn’t want to stop reading. I savored every page of this one.
This is an excellent (and unfortunately) final! 😭 addition to Ms. Dev’s Raje’s series. This has been such a truly wonderful series to read and while I’m sad that it’s over, I’m looking forward to Ms. Dev’s future works.
Highly recommended, as is the entire series!
I could NOT put this book down!!
Sonali Dev had me from the very first page and I couldn't get enough of Naina and Vansh's chemistry. They both had so much to learn from each other, the trust and growth was written really well. Seeing Naina's relationship with her mom and her non-existent relationship with her dad was eye-opening - not to mention the different family dynamics between the Raje's and the Kholi's.
I haven't read many age-gap tropes (especially when the woman is older!) and I have to admit I'm sold. Give me more!!
Sonali Dev does it again! I've never been so sad to finish a series and leave a family behind. The Emma Project ties the last four novels together and truly brings everything full circle. Not only do you get to revisit some of your favorite characters, but you get to really meet and dig deep into characters who have lived on the sidelines of other books. The Emma Project is not to be missed and I can't wait to read her future novels.
Content warning: Naina's father is physically and emotionally abusive. We aren't given an open door into his physical abuse of Naina's mother, but we know it exists. We see the damage his control and emotional abuse have on Naina and how it has shaped her life. The author takes good care of both women. But if this is difficult for you, take care.
The Emma Project by Sonali Dev is a very special story. It's a wonderful ending to the Rajaes series. You can feel the tones of Jane Austen's Emma throughout the book, but it's not a scene for scene retelling of the story.
Vansh emulates Emma, a wonderful gender bending twist to the story. Vansh is so open to the world. He believes there is happiness to be found anywhere, and he wants to do good. He makes mistakes, errors, but he apologizes and finds ways to make it right. Naina emulates Knightley, stoic, closed off, trying to keep everything together, and take care of everyone. Vansh and Naina are two pieces that just fit. I love seeing Vansh essentially knock his families heads together. They needed multiple talking tos to get out of their own way. Eventually, we get our Happy Ending!
And Oh My Stars we get Esha's story!!!!!!!
I received an advance review copy for free from NetGalley, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
On the one hand, this only bears a passing resemblance to Emma. On the other, I never really liked Emma and LOVE the Rajes, so that works out really nicely as far as I'm concerned.
Sadly I have not read book one-three, but I feel like these can be read as standalones.
From the first page, Sonali had me hooked.
Sonali Dev has created a great, diverse and interesting world full of complicated yet intriguing characters.
Thought provoking, complex, and emotional THE EMMA PROJECT kept me reading way late into the night. I wouldn't have changed a thing! It was perfect.
The setting and plot were remarkable and very well done.
I'm obsessed with her writing style.
This book will draw in from.the very beginning.
Now I'm off going to figure out a way to read the books before this one.
Avon,
Thank You for your generosity and gifting me a copy of this amazing eARC!
I will post my review closer to pub date.
Ok this is such a great Austen’s adaptation, reading Emma’s adaptation was amazing, is so much good vibes in this book, I could feel the love and friendship together, This was an absolute pleasant reading!
Can you believe I didn't realize this was a series?! The bright side is that now I get to go back and re-read all of them.
I love a good re-telling, and this was a wonderful Austen reimagining. This book is funny and sweet and creative - Naina and Vansh are so loveable and you can see the chemistry. The second storyline also really works, which makes the book fly by. Overall, recommend!
This book is SO GOOD! Every time I picked up “The Emma Project”, I found myself not wanting the put this book down!
This is the fourth book in Sonali Dev’s “The Rajes Series”, and is a modern story inspired by Jane Austen’s “Emma”! Ms. Dev’s storytelling is spectacular, and she brilliantly brings the world of her story to life right before the reader’s eyes. She weaves a story filled with romance, culture, family relationships, people that feel so incredibly real, and so much more, and the result is a gripping novel that hooks you from the very first page.
I do not want to say too much about this book plot wise due to spoilers, but, I will say, Naina and Vansh are truly perfect together. Yes, they are flawed, but, they truly bring out the best in one another. Also, Esha!!
I highly recommend this book! It kept me turning the pages to see what would happen next, and I so look forward to reading what Ms. Dev writes next.
Thank you so much to Avon and NetGalley for the ARC of this book, it is incredible. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.
EMMA RETELLING????!!! EMMA RETELLING WITH INDIAN AMERICAN MAIN CHARACTERS???!!! I am a huge fan of Jane Austen retellings so honestly this book had me from the get go! Plus I love Hollywood celebrity romances so this was truly the book for me!!! I LOVED this and I can’t recommend it more highly ahhhhh. Sonali Dev is such an amazing author and she did not miss with this book. The chemistry was top tier, truly! Highly recommend.
This was a very ambitious story to tell, and I don't know if it truly worked. With so many plot lines, the back half of the book became very rushed. The Eshna storyline was the best part
