Great simple, timeless recipes from years gone by, but there's something in this special book for everyone! Much sought-after vintage recipes are within its pages! Definitely one of those must-have books for recipe fanatics that are looking for those truly valued vintage recipes. Easy ingredients, simple directions, and fantastic dishes! Highly recommended!
A wonderful book full of easy-to-follow recipes. Has also canning and how to make pickles, which were both things I did with my grandmother growing up. Took me back to remembering that her canned fruit and her pickles were better than the store-bought, she even made her own salad dressing along with other things. Very much worth the read.
This was a great recipe book that has a lot of delicious looking recipes that I will definitely have to try out!
Usually when I get a cookbook I find recipe that I would cook and have the ingredients for. That was not the case with this one. This is an amazing collection of simple recipes that most people would have the ingredients for right in their homes, instead of writing them down, going to the store and buying said ingredients, coming home and forgetting which recipe it was the ingredients went to .... :)
Great addition to any kitchen. Wonderful for a newly married couple, or someone starting out on their own.
I received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review.
Book received for free through NetGalley
After requesting this book life got busy so I never got a chance to make them. Figured it's been awhile so I should review from what I saw. The meals looked great. I especially love the looks for the dessert... those are still on my todo list. Perfect if you're hoping to branch out.
A well put together collection of recipes. I love recipe books and this is a very good one. My thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for my ARC. This is my unbiased review.
A super collection of old recipes, but in new format. These are simple, vintage recipes, well worth trying!
*received for free from netgalley for honest review* im such a sucker for cookbooks! lmao loved this book and knew i wanted to buy it instantly!
A proper old-school style recipe book that reminded me of the ones my mum and granny had. I just wish it had a few more photos included.
Covers a great range of recipes - old staples, family favourites, traditional desserts etc. Also covers how to make sauces and accompaniments to main courses.
I've noted some of the recipes to try out with my family soon 😊
This is an excellent cookbook with basic, homey Midwestern recipes. They’re accessible to cooks of all talent levels. The recipes that are dated are from the early part of the 20th century. I’m going to try:
Clam Chowder
Corn Chowder
German Kuchen
Stuffed pork loin
Apricot oatmeal cookies
Not every recipe had a picture, but the ones that did had great pictures. I recommend this book for old fashioned home cooking, 5 stars.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
After a very brief introduction, THE BEST RECIPES FROM THE FARMER’S WIFE COOKBOOK, gets right into the recipes. And though I normally like a longer intro, there is no way I can complain about jumping right into the delicious food that I found.
Eleven chapters from Salads to Beverages and everything in between, left me so hungry! Besides the ones listed in the book blurb, here are some of the amazing recipes you’ll find!
Country Kitchen Salad, Vegetable Sandwich Filling, Egg Soup, Hasty-Tasty Stew, Corn Scramble, Steamed Brown Bread, Cheese Straws, Potato Muffins, Hamburger Casserole, Pork Chop Casserole, Chicken Shortcake, Southern Fried Chicken, Baked Spinach with Cheese, Scalloped Tomatoes, Potato Puff, Baked Potato Kugel, Old-Fashioned Applesauce, Caramel Bread Pudding, Jam Marguerite, Honey Drop Hermits, Frosted Creams, Kiss Cake, Banana Fritters, Angel Pie, Herby Pastry and so very many more.
Let me start with my pet-peeve in cookbooks, lack of photos. The photos that are included are beautiful and full color, and make the food look delicious. As you can see from above, there are some interesting foods. Some I’ve never heard of and I’m sure some of you haven’t either. Photos of those would have been a great help.
There are a lot of old time dishes in this cookbook, as one would expect from the title. The recipes themselves are clear and easy to follow. And they’re short and simple. I love that. Longwinded, many multi-stepped recipes can be so intimidating.
I was given a chance to review this cookbook and happily did so. That being said, I so enjoyed the simplicity of the recipes, and they reminded me so much of my Mommom, and parents, I ordered a copy of my own!
For those that love cookbooks, this is a classic. Tested recipes to bring you the best from the Farmer's Wife Cookbook which was published in the late 1800's to mid 1930's in midwestern America.
From plain, easy recipes like the one casserole dish of pork chops and rice to Chicken Fried Steak and plus the desserts of the time. Well worth a read.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exhange for an honest review.
This cookbook share with us the best recipes published on Farmer's Wife Magazine between 1893 and 1939. Classic and easy, this book is filled with all kind of recipes (lunch, breakfast, desserts and beverages) and my favorite thing about it is the simplicity of these recipes. There are no crazy expensive ingredients or difficult directions, which makes me more into trying them.
My only complain about it is the lack of picture of the recipes. If you have no references of some dishes, it might be hard to imagine how the final product should look or be displayed.
Thank you to Netgalley and Quarto Publishing Group for the free ARC.
Big thank you to #netgalley and #Quarto Publishing Group for a review copy of this cookbook in exchange for an honest review.
There are so many recipes in this cookbook that I would like to try. The nostalgia that I got from looking at them and remembering being in my Grandmother's kitchen was just so perfect.
There are several recipes I would like to try and more than one that I think are so close to old family recipes that I thought were gone forever, My first try will be the Southern Apple dumplings. Hopefully it will be as close to Grandmas I can get as no recipe I have tried has come close yet. I also will be trying several of the cookie recipes and am intrigued by the Danish Love Krandse cookie recipe that uses grated hard boiled eggs. So interesting. There are also many recipes using hickory nut meats which were a staple in our house as children.
Best Recipes from the Farmer's Wife Cookbook is filled with recipes from 1893 to 1939.
I really enjoyed reading through this - I love the simplicity of the many recipes included. I am already wanting to have a whole day cooking and eating these old meals.
This would be a great book to have a physical copy to reference when in the kitchen.

Just buy it. Beautiful photographs and wrll written recipes for so many classic American dishes. Who wouldn't t want a good biscuit r ecipe or the secrets to gravy making? The dessert section is divine. Just buy it.
A compilation of recipes from a magazine of bygone days with most from the 1920s and early 1930s. A good mix of salads, soups, stews but with an emphasis on baked goods - cakes, pastries, pies, biscuits, cookies and so on. Very much of their time - basic ingredients and few spices, the odd bit of paprika, nutmeg, cinnamon. The recipes are straightforward and use whole foods, probably not much else around then other than cans, but they are clear and easy to understand. They are presented in a way that I hope would appeal to modern cooks although photographs are few and far between, so perhaps not. It's certainly not just for farmwife cooks, urbanites could learn a thing or two and it's always good to see a book with simple, plain food, easily and quickly made for the busy modern family. It would be a good book to start off a young cook - get the basics then add chilli and garlic! Thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group - Harvard Common Press for an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
My sincere thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for a digital ARC of this title, in exchange for my honest review.
In today's current kitchen climate, many cooks are returning to tried and true cooking concepts and this cookbook is a lovely collection of perfectly comforting food. Warm and hearty dishes, filling breakfasts, tasty sweets, and simple ideas for a long day. This is a wonderful addition for anyone's cookbook collection, whether they are experienced or new to cooking. The introduction gives a brief history about how these recipes were originally collected, between 1893 - 1939, and tips on how to make them successful in today's kitchen. Plenty of classic recipes, that will be immediately recognized, are interspersed between older recipes that are not as recognized today. However, these lesser known recipes will quickly find their way into modern kitchens. This is absolutely a cookbook that will find its way on to my personal shelves after publication.
This is such a beautiful & great cookbook, I absolutely love it! I’ve always been a sucker for a good cookbook to browse, and this one was just so nicely put together with great visuals! I will continue using this for a long time, thank you for the advanced copy!
What a fun cookbook! Best Recipes from the Farmer's Wife Cookbook: Over 250 Blue-Ribbon Recipes presents recipes from the Farmer’s Wife Magazine between 1893 and 1939. Each recipe gives the date it appeared in the magazine. Most of the recipes included are for comfort foods - nothing new, weird, or innovative – just good down-to-earth recipes that real people who like food actually will want to eat.
