We find out lots of information in this book. It is very interesting and ends on a positive note. I like all of the book recommendations. Nora is moving forward with her life after Jed leaving so that is good.
Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for my eARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book was everything I wanted it to be. Ellery Adams is a master of the cozy mystery. Since this is the fifth book in this series, I am completely invested in the characters, and Ms. Adams does not disappoint. Ms. Adams continues to add layers to her characters, and the storylines are top-notch.
Nora and her friends love living in their peaceful small town. But when people start getting murdered, they will do anything to keep their community safe. This was a good cozy mystery with a very good ending!
In The Vanishing Type we once again meet the members of the Secret, Book, and Scone Society as they meet at June’s bookstore and analyze what is going on in their town of Miracle Springs. While each of the members of the Society is involved in some of the local happenings (be it romance, illness, family ties, and/or murder), this book’s focus is primarily on Hester. The question is: why has Hester been the subject of several disturbing developments? The members of the Society circle their wagons as they investigate the problems, working with the local Sheriff to help solve the mysterious murder(s). Just when you think that you know the identity of the murderer, more information comes to light. There are plenty of red herrings and twists in the narrative, all of which helped to keep my attention throughout. I look forward to reading more of the amateur sleuthing adventures of Nora, Estella, June, Hester, and Sheldon.
The Secret Book and Scone Society is one of my favourite series. Four woman meet and over time become best friends and learn to trust in life again. This is book 5 and each book just keeps getting better.

A marriage proposal, a secret, a serious illness, a possible romance, a murder. These things are not mutually exclusive for the close friends with complicated pasts now living in Miracle Springs. This book is a meaningful example of women's fiction, a complicated murder mystery, and a feast of book titles and authors. The publisher's blurb is a good hook, but the story itself reeled me in page by page and the bibliotherapy at the very end is wonderful! Excellent characters and an interesting yet different plot make this an exceptional read. I really enjoy the interspersed book quotes!
I requested and received a free e-book copy from Kensington Books/Kensington Cozies via NetGalley. Thank you!
The Vanishing Type by Ellery Adams (The Secret Book & Scone Society #5) 4.5 stars
It is spring time in Miracle Springs, North Carolina and Nora Pennington, owner of Miracle Books is helping Deputy Andrews arrange a proposal to Hester baker extraordinaire and another member of the Secret Book & Scone Society. Unfortunately, Nora discovers copies of The Scarlet Letter defaced with Hester's name cut out; is something sinister afoot? A dead body in the woods and mysterious volumes showing up in unusual places complicate things. Nora has to put her sleuthing hat on to discover the connections and save Heather.
The best part of this series is the connection between the members of The Secret Book & Scone Society. Four mature women who have had trauma in their lives band together as a strong support system for each other. There were multiple mysteries and a death, but Nora and company help put together the clues to solve them all. I enjoyed reading this installment and look forward to the next book in this series.
Thank you Netgalley and Kensington Books for this ARC.
In the latest installment of the Secret, Book, and Scone Society series, Nora, June, Estella, and Hester continue through the difficulties that have brought them to Miracle Springs, North Carolina. This tourist town has all the trappings of a spa town, with equal portions of mystery and intrigue. Hester becomes the spotlight of this story, when her beau, Deputy Andrews plans a proposal. But someone in town doesn't think Hester should be the queen of the spotlight. This someone from Hester's past is leaving clues around town, and Nora and Sheriff McCabe have to determine who and why. As always, Ellery Adams provides the reader with an excellent portrait of all the characters and scenes.
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Publishing for this ARC!
First of all, I adore this series and eagerly look forward to each new installment. I was so excited to see that there was a new installment in the series!
While this series is a little more saccharine than the mysteries I usually read, there is something about it I just love. Nora's world that she has created for herself seems like such a warm, cozy place to be. And I find all of her bibliotherapy to be delightful. In fact, I noticed that this book seemed to have more book titles suggested by Nora than in any of the previous books. To the author/publisher: Please let Nora suggest a ridiculous amount of books in each series installment. I LOVE seeing all of the titles she recommends. I do wish there was a title list in the end of the book, though, of all the ones she recommended.
I find the relationship evolution between Nora and Gabe to be so well done and perfect. It has organically blossomed and seems to be exactly what Nora needs at this phase in her life. Part of what makes Nora such a compelling character is that she's been through such trauma, but has emerged with a deep understanding of herself and a commitment to contentment and warmth that is amazing.
While I love the characters in this book who feel like old friends, and the bookstore setting and bibliotherapy elements are wonderful, I did feel that certain parts of this mystery were convoluted. I could never figure out how the books actually fit in to the plot... it seemed far-fetched and the explanations flimsy.
But honestly I'm not reading this series for the mystery elements. I want to vicariously live through Nora's trips to the flea market and see which books she recommends to which customers. I want to see her make tea in her tiny house and go for hikes in the mountains. The mystery component is secondary for me.
The Vanishing Type is an easy and fun read. Nora Pennington is the main character along with her supporting characters from the beginning of the series. The new characters add to the story. The story takes place in the town of Miracle Springs, Nora's owns the book store Miracle Books which is in the old train station, Shelton is her only employee. Shelton discovers all the books of The Scarlet Letters are all slashed and Hester's name is scratched into them. Jasper Andrews, boyfriend of her friend, Hester has asked Nora to help him set-up a good place to ask Hester to marry him. It is suggested to do it at the movie theater which he does and she accepts. While out hiking Nora comes across Grant McCabe, sheriff and her boyfriend near the bridge. There is a body found at the bottom of the bridge. No one knows who he is. There is a book found in his pocket called Miss Delphinium. Throughout the story other books by the same author appear. Nora does research and finds that they are all part of The Lady Artist books. Sadie Strong is the jacket designer. The flowers on the covers are based on Tiffany glass designs for Tiffany Studios. There is a letter clue in the flowers. This is where the author takes the reader on an adventure of finding out the mystery of the books, who the murdered victim is, Hester's secret to the exciting ending.
I am looking for the next adventure of the Secret Book and Scone Society book club.
Thank you NetGalley and Kensington Publishing Corp. for this ARC.
It's winter in Miracle Springs and the women of the Secret, Book, and Scone Society are enjoying book group meetings and comfort food. The atmosphere changes when a stranger is found murdered with a vintage book in his pocket and another book by the same author is found in Hester's bakery. When multiple copies of The Scarlet Letter are found on Miracle Books shelf with the word "Hester" cut out Nora's finger begins to tingle an alert. Hester is happy and good things are happening in her life but the message hidden in the cover art of the old books reveal secrets from her past that put her in danger. Nora, June and Estelle form a protective band around Hester to keep her safe until the killer is caught.
This is the 5th in the series. The combination of sisterhood, books, food and intriguing plots keep each new story fresh and interesting.
While January snow falls outside in Miracle Springs, North Carolina, Nora Pennington is encouraging customers to cozy up indoors with a good book. Even though the shop and her bibliotherapy sessions keep Nora busy during the day, her nights are a little too quiet until Deputy Andrews asks her to help him plan a wedding proposal. His bride-to-be, Hester, loves Little Women, and Nora sets to work arranging a special screening at the town’s new movie theater. But right before the deputy pops the question, Nora makes an unsettling discovery that someone has mutilated all her store’s copies of The Scarlet Letter, slicing angrily into the pages wherever Hester Prynne’s name is mentioned. The coincidence disturbs Nora, who’s one of the few in Miracle Springs who knows that Hester gave up a baby for adoption many years ago. Her family heaped shame on her, and Hester still feels so guilty that she hasn’t even told her future husband. But when a dead man is found on a hiking trail just outside town, carrying a rare book, the members of the Secret, Book, and Scone Society unearth a connection to Hester’s past.
I am a big fan of Ellery Adams and have read every title in this series along with the Books by the Bay series, and the Book Retreat series. She develops her characters more with each book and describes the setting so well that you feel like you are there. I look forward to more in the series.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read this newest title in one of my favorite series.
Reading a book from The Secret Scone and Book Society series, pulls me into the world of Miracle Springs, N.C. The atmosphere of the books are so real and well-written, that the characters seem as if they could jump off the page. This mystery revolves around one of their own, Hester, who is in the middle of a mystery that will lead to murder. The question is, will it be Hester's?
What makes this series so good, in my opinion, is that there are four equally strong characters who are determined to lead their best lives and let go of the past. Each character is relatable and likable. Every reader can find something they relate to in the stories. Combine that with an intriguing mystery that draws you in and keeps you guessing and you have a wonderful mystery reading experience. When a reader opens the book, it feels like you're coming home to visit with four friends who are talented sleuths and devoted friends.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and the opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Even when my TBR list is a mountain, a new Secret, Book and Scone Society book will get moved to the top. I am always satisfied, no, ecstatic, to start a new Ellery Adams book and this one did not let me down.
Nora, June, Estella and Hester are the best kind of found family and their love and caring for each other really stand out in this book. There are several other characters who enhance this series and bring joy into the lives of our friends.
The cozy, wintry setting in the tourist town of Miracle Springs really IS a miracle. Even here in sunny CA I felt like I should be wrapped in a fleece blanket with a hot chocolate and a roaring fire.
The plot was good. I thought I'd figured it out, and indeed had part of it. The wrap up was much more complicated and not at all expected.
One of the scenes in this book takes plsce on Valentines day and I wish it would be published by then since I think it would be a perfect choice for a Galentines day book club.
Many thanks to NetGalley, Kensington books and Ellery Adams for this ARC of The Vanishing Type in exchange for an honest review. I'm very happy to recommend this book!
Thank you Netgalley for the advance reader copy of The Vanishing Type by Ellery Adams in exchange for an honest review. Nora Pennington, owner of Miracle Books in Miracle Springs, North Carolina. They have a book club called The Secret, Book and Scone Society. The ladies cherish these weekly meetings for the food, fellowship and discussion of books. While rearranging books, Nora comes across many damaged books with Hester cut out of the Scarlet Letter. How creepy, why would someone do this? A man is found dead with only a book in his pocket on a hiking trail. Ellery Adams is a great author. She writes about books I have never heard of, which makes me wish we still had our used book stores.
This is a wonderful addition to a great series. I enjoy reading the author quotes at the top of each chapter and all of the book references sprinkled throughout. Nora, the main character, is a book store owner and I love reading about all of her window and book displays. Nora is a very smart woman who notices a lot about the people that she interacts with and also makes wonderful book suggestions to her customers based on the information that they provide.. Her friends, Hester, June and Estella are also central to the story. I love how the women are so close and look out for each other, and how they work together to help the Sheriff solve the mystery. The mystery in this book was very complex and kept me glued to the pages. I look forward to each book that this author writes.
I received a complimentary copy of this ebook from the publisher through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
The story hooks you from page one and doesn’t let go until you turn the last page! The Secret, Book, and Scone Society ladies are wonderful and caring people whose emotional journeys transcend the pages and pull readers straight into their lives. Nora, the protagonist, helps a multitude of people through her aptly named bookshop, Miracle Books. Her friends all have a ‘special touch’ they share to help those in need. Baking special pastries, knitting warm socks, and recommending books are a mix of their talents.
Bestselling Author Ellery Adams writing is terrific. The plot is magnanimous! If you enjoy reading, drinking coffee, a compelling mystery, and spreading kindness to others—“The Vanishing Type” should be on your To Buy list!
I honestly reviewed a digital arc provided by NetGalley and Kensington Publishing. All opinions are my own.
Another wonderful installment of the Secret, Book and Scone Society. This time Hester's secret is forced to the surface when the father of her child is found dead. There's also a series of Lady Artists books that keep mysteriously appearing. Nora and the rest of the crew are desperate to find out how it all connects. Loved the blossoming relationship between Nora and the Sheriff. As always, the theme of female friendships is strong and absolutely lovely. This may be my favorite of the series yet!
The mystery was intriguing with its many twists and connections to books and art but for me the highlight is the close bond of friendship shared by the members of the Secret, Book, and Scone Society. It made me want to move to Miracle Springs just to get to know them. We're not talking "Let's do lunch" or a distracted "How are you doing?" friends. We're talking friends who know each other's inner-most painful secrets and guard them, even from other loved ones.
The plot sounds relatively simple on the surface. A stranger is found murdered with a mysterious book in his coat pocket. In addition, at the same time some of main character Nora Pennington's beloved bookstore books are found defaced, with the name Hester violently sliced out of copies of Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter". Is this somehow connected to Nora's friend Hester, a treasured friend in the Society? Will Hester''s secret ruin her relationship and recent engagement? Is there some connection to Hester having found a beautifully illustrated novel with secrets of its own? Could Hester be guilty of murder?
Bottom line, this is an intricately plotted, meaningful story of not just murder but friendship and, yes, secrets. Are secrets always best kept secret? The story reminds us that we all are touched by past relationships and events. It's also a wonderful reminder that family isn't just blood relatives, that the real magic "is what happens when you finally find your people", whether near or far. Full of book and movie references, nicely collected for us by category at the end, this is an intricate, evolving story of family, friends, and, yes, murder. I highly recommend it.
BTW, it would be remiss of me with the current emergence of the on-line word game Wordle not to mention the role a word "game" plays in the story.
Thank you #NetGalley and #KensigntonBooks for this wonderful story. It has been a thoughtful delight to follow from book one and I look forward to more.
This ARC was provided to me via Kindle, Kensington Books and by #NetGalley. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
The fifth book in the well established cozy mystery series is as enjoyable as the previous four. Ellery Adams knows what readers want and hits another home run.
