This series just keeps getting better and better! I enjoy all of the references to books throughout. The rare book series was really intriguing - the first being found on a dead man, and additional books found elsewhere. I love how the ladies stick together and help each other. The storyline was amazing. Ellery kept me reading through the entire book. Thank you.
Genre: cozy mystery/women's fiction
Series: Book 5 in the Secret, Book, and Scone Society
Pub date: 4/26/22
In one sentence (from publisher): Bookshop owner, bibliotherapist, and occasional sleuth Nora Pennington must enlist the help of her brilliant, brassy librarian friend Bobbie to unravel the connection between The Scarlet Letter, an obscure 19th century writer, and a dead hiker.
Do I need to read book 1 first: I think you should! It's not 100% essential, but you'll get a lot more background on Nora and Miracle Springs.
I love books about books, and this series takes the cake! Nora's bibliotherapy is so fun to follow along with - I loved seeing her create the perfect book matches and hosting a book Valentine's party. As in the previous books, there's a complex, multi-layered mystery that unfolds slowly but surely. What distinguishes this series from other cozies is the depth of character development and emotion. The four women are incredible at supporting each other, and their friendship is truly special.
If you enjoy a good mystery and strong female characters, this is a winner!

Again, Nora and her book club friends (Estella, Hester and June )are involved in another mystery. Nora owns a bookstore in Miracle Springs and she discovers THE SCARLET LETTER books with the name Hester cut out. It looks like destruction of property. Meanwhile, the police discover a dead body with no ID.. Hester revealed to Nora, Estella and June that she gave up a baby for adoption and that Hester was abused by her family. An Aunt was a bit kinder because she liked Hester's cooking and paid for Hester's cooking school. Hester became a baker.
The past comes knocking on the door in the form of seeming unrelated incidents.. Not only is there a dead body but also a favorite customer is run off the road when driving. And someone is left a book at Hester's bakery. Nora keeps on finding books with similar covers. There are clues. Nora works with the Sheriff to try to solve the clues.
Highly recommended for fans of cozy mysteries, though there is a scary moment at the near end of the book.
This is a outstanding series and one of top favorite cozy mystery series of all time. This is one of my absolute favorites of the series. I love the entire series for the well crafted mysteries, wonderful book references throughout each book and the strong women charcters. The joy of reading this series for those of us that love books is you will end this book with a delightful TBR list as long as your arm. The wonderful book suggestions throughout have brought me so much reading enjoyment.
Nora, Hester, Estella and June are the central charcters and all independent women that value their friendships. This core group of women are the Secret Book & Scone Society. They are generous to their community and do good works behind the scene. They all own successful businesses and are relatable to the reader. The marvelous traincar bookstore Nora owns in Miracle Springs North Carolina is the center of the mystery . Nora is a bibliotherapist who recommends books to her customers and friends based on her intuition. The bookstore is a center for the area and loved by the community. The description of the bookstore is brought to life by the author and a joy to imagine through the author's eyes.
In this next in series Nora finds a series of books vandalized in her store . The books relate to a member of their group who has just become engaged. Nora and friends fear her past has come back to haunt her . As the mystery deepens Nora and her friend the local Sheriff are working together and their mutual attraction is growing. The mystery becomes more involved and soon Nora may be in danger .
it was a perfect sleuth from beginning to conclusion. The suspects kept me guessing and I loved the ending. The mystery is multi layered to keep the reader turning pages to the end. Each charcters is richly defined and enjoyable to read. The bookstore employee is a delight and I appreciate that the author features a senior with disabilities. His quick wit and knowledge of books are fun and a marvelous addition to this series. Nora has found her place in the world with her unique and spectacular bookstore . Thank you to the author for this outstanding series that is such a delight to your readers.
You will want to read this book cover to cover and read it again and again. I cannot wait for the next in series ! Thank you Ellery , the publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity. My review opinion is my own.
Back in Miracle Springs at Nora's bookstore with the entire cast of characters. Valentine's day is quickly approaching & love is in the air! We start with a surprise engagement, then, unfortunately a mystery death. Warning signs of doom, a general pall over the town, and another death. Twists and turns, until the killer is revealed. A few new characters are introduced, adding to the storyline.
Once again, Ellery Adams has done a wonderful job pulling the reader into her story. A "grown up" cozy mystery filled with kind, good hearted friends.
Thank you to Ms Adams, NetGalley & Kensington Books for a preread in exchange for an honest review.
Wow, what can I possibly say about The Vanishing Type that will influence someone to buy it, read it, and maybe pass it on to someone else.
Nora, Hester, Estella and June are the core characters of this wonderful series by the talented Ellery Adam's. Sheldon is a newer character who works with Nora in her book shop. He's a wonderful addition to the series and his chronic pain allows him to be real, to show everyone that illnesses like fibromyalgia are very real and can be extremely debilitating.
In this story, Hester is forced to relive the pain and anguish of events that took place several years earlier.
As the story unfolds, we see the love these friends have for each other, and that even in their darkest times they will always be there for each other.
There were so many emotional moments throughout the book, I was cheering for Nora, praying with Estella, crying for Hester, and wishing for relief for Sheldon. June is a rockstar, she stayed strong and never took advantage of any of her friends vulnerabilities.
The mystery portion of this book was intense, I had some of the puzzle put together, but I did miss a few pieces, and was surprised about who the villain was.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a solid story with good, strong characters, humor, love and honesty, with an interesting mystery thrown into the mix.

The Vanishing Type is the latest installment in The Secret, Book, & Scone Society series. A good, solid cozy, with strong female characters. I particularly enjoy the bibliotherapy aspects of the story!
This particular series is a bit different from most with real and reasonable characters, settings, and story lines, but they are also entertaining and enjoyable. You definitely want these women in your life. This addition lets their closeness shine through in protecting the bride to be in this interesting mystery.
The Secret, Book and Scone Society books are always one of my favorites during the year.. The Vanishing Type certainly does not disappoint. Nora, Sheriff McCabe and the ladies of the Secret, Book and Scone society must find out who killed a stranger in town, vandalized Nora's books and is mysteriously leaving other books around town as a message. Nora has an uneasy feeling that the target may be on of the society. Will past secrets come out or end in tragedy.
As always this is a very well written books with literary references that will leave you adding to your to be read pile. The mystery is full of twists that will leave you guessing. I love the relationships bween the ladies of the Secret, Book and Scone Society and how they have deepened as the reader has learned more about each characters as the series progresses.
This series is not only a great mystery series but always touches me on a deeper level that always seems to address what is happening or has happened in my life or the life of a friend. I highly recommend The Vanishing Type and the entire series to mystery lovers or just any reader looking for a complex plot with deep characters you can connect with as you read.
I love the cast of characters in this book and the depth of their friendships. I figured out some parts of the mystery, but not all. The full explanation of the mystery felt a bit convoluted, but I still really enjoyed this book.
This is the 5th book by Ellery Adams in the Secret, Book, and Scone society series. Newly engaged Hester gave a baby up for adoption years ago. Her family heaped shame on her as a teen and Hester still feels too guilty to tell her fiance. Her friend Nora Pennington, owner of a miracle Books, is one of the few people Hester confided in about the baby. Nora finds someone has mutilated all the stores copies of The Scarlet letter, slicing through the pages that mention Hester Prynne. When a dead man is found on a hiking trail with a rare book in his pocket. Nora is afraid Hester is in danger and enlists her friends from the Secret, Book, and scone society to find the connections and keep Hester safe.
I enjoyed this book, I really liked the characters. The story is interesting and a fast read. The story has a great bad guy, I never suspected until they found the family tree. #TheVanishingType #NetGalley
A close knit group of friends trying to plan secret proposal for one of their members while finding bodies and books appearing at random places. These 4 women are brave, resourceful and devoted to each other. A fun read.
Nora is back in book five - The Vanishing Type.
It's early winter and Nora is busy during the day with her bookstore. When the local Deputy asks her to help plan a wedding proposal she jumps at the offer.
Everything is planned for the big moment. However, just as the proposal is to take place Nora discovers a disturbing scene and to make matters worse it involves Hester, the bride-to-be.
A must read!!
Ellery Adams' Secret, Book, and Scone Society Mysteries are a cut above most other cozy mystery series because the characters are mature, grounded, and relatable, and the plots are well thought out and thoroughly engrossing. They don't feel frivolous or silly, but they are endlessly entertaining (trust me--I've read all five).
Four women who own or manage businesses in Miracle Springs, NC started the Society a few years back when they discovered that each of them had a well-kept and harrowing secret that she longed to reveal to just a few trusted friends. Nora is the leader and protagonist, but this story also features Hester, owner of the Gingerbread House Bakery. Hester's boyfriend, a police detective, has plans to propose to her and is pretty confident she will accept, but he doesn't know about her secret. As the book progresses, more disturbing details about Hester's background are revealed, and more than one murder occurs in this quiet town. At the same time, Nora and her police chief beau are trying to figure out why a stack of books in her Miracle Books shop have been defaced, and why a series of old books--each with a different flower on the cover--are showing up in the strangest places.
I particularly love the town of Miracle Springs and the characters of the four Society members. Also keeping things fun and interesting are Nora's quirky and devoted bookstore employee, her vibrant long-distance best friend, and the bookstore's imaginative and fun events, in addition to the oft-mentioned delicious-sounding bakery treats. And if you enjoy this series, you'll want to look for the author's enthralling 7-book Book Retreat Mysteries, which have an exciting magical realism factor.
My thanks to NetGalley and Kensington for allowing me to read and provide an honest review of this book.
When a body is found on a trail, and books in a series begin to appear in the strangest places, Nora and the sheriff try to figure out what they mean. As they dig and try to uncover the meaning, more things begin happening and Nora and the ladies in the book club wonder if it might not be tied to one of their own, but how and why?
When another body is found it becomes evident that someone is after one of their own and the ladies will do whatever is needed to save one of their own sisters. But will they be able to unravel everything and save the day, or will one of them pay the ultimate price for protecting their sister and keeping her secret?
This is one of the smartest and best cozy series out there. Sure, I love a lot of these series and enjoy them all, but this one is super special because the author always includes some amazing quotes and uses books to help others and bases the mystery around them often. I can’t get enough of these ladies and the books. If you haven’t read one of Ellery Adams’ books yet, you’re missing out! You might want to fix that right now as this reads fine as a stand alone as well as part of the series.
The latest entry in the Secret, Book and Scone Society series, “The Vanishing Type” is a wonderful book. I read it in a weekend, turning the pages quickly to see how it ends and at the same time wishing I would slow down as it will be another year before the next book comes out (I hope!) The book centers on a group of dear friends in the small, arty NC mountain town of Miracle Springs. The depth of feeling and caring from these women who are from different backgrounds yet came together to try and heal past traumas is so up lifting. Add in a compelling cast of locals, a few love interests and a good mystery and you have the makings of a series that I hope keeps going. This book can be read as a stand alone but I recommend you start from the first book to really get to know and love the characters.
A proposal involving books what could go wrong? Well in a mystery even a cozy mystery a lot. Especially when some it targeting the bride to be because of her past. I have to say that this one was my favorite of the series so far.
Nora owns a bookstore she runs with her friend Sheldon, has 4 wonderful best friends, a new love interest, lives in an refurbished caboose, has a wonderful backstory and always talks books. What’s not to like? Adam’s characters seem very real, people I’d like to hang out with, and the mystery is always good.. I find each book stronger than the last as we experience everyday life and of course murder with this crew.
