A beautifully crafted anthology of poetry about animals that make their homes on, under, or near glaciers. Exquisite artwork with fine detail, vivid colors, and rich textures accompany the stanzas filled with interesting facts and expansive vocabulary. The main focus is on U.S. North American glaciers, flora and fauna. A short, two page read provides further detail on how glaciers form as well as the major ones of the United States. A great book for Poetry Month and Earth Day!
Thank you to the author, Sasquatch Books and NetGalley, for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This children's book brings the natural landscape and animals of Alaska to life - the illustrations are well-done and supported by factoids on each animal. I did find the rhyming text a bit much, and my test readers and I would have preferred more facts and less verse. Bonus points for the inclusion of how glaciers are formed, slight penalty for lack of any mention of climate change and the huge threat it poses to these amazing natural resources.
A big thank you to NetGalley and Sasquatch Books/Little Bigfoot for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is a children's nonfiction book. Ok, I enjoyed the illustrations, but I almost think actual photographs would have been nicer. I liked the rhyming but again thought it was over the top. I liked that they included plants. i had to look up Salmonberries. I still found this to be a delightful book. It is super interesting, and I liked that they incorporated the formation of glaciers as well. 4 stars
Glaciers are fascinating, and in this decade of many of them melting and dissipating, learning about the complex ecosystems glaciers foster.
Who Lives Near a Glacier? is a picture book with lovely illustrations of the flora and fauna that live on glaciers. Many of the images are accompanied by a poem about the plant/animal/insect, and little facts about the inhabitants are peppered throughout the book. The story concludes with a description of the formation of glaciers.
A book that deserves to be a huge hit in Alaska – and in the inferior states, too. Crafted paintings show the animals found near glaciers, big or small, aquatic or not, resident or visiting – and alongside we get a rhymed verse for each and every one, plus a more scientific factoid that somehow doesn't intrude nearly as much as on previous occasions I've seen this kind of format. It's a fine poetic primer for the biology and ecology of the state, whether you're just visiting or living there. A strong four stars.
Amazing artwork! Kudos to the artist. And wow, I just love the poetry dedicated to each of the wild life mentioned in the book. Rich, lush and brimmed with fun facts the book is a must have.
Thank you, Saquatch Books, for the advance reading copy.
