Danger Unknown, I mean, right there, the title hooks you right in.

I was excited to start this book last night. I had seen it would be released this morning and of course I needed to be the first to know every little detail !

This is a book jam packed with suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Disclaimer, I am not to be blamed for the nailbeds you bite down into while reading.

I warned you!

A mother and daughter are running like their lives depend on it (literally) . When her husbands murderer appears back in Brooke's life, she knows she doesn't have any other choice but to run. This book is filled with twists and turns and was very easy to read. The narration was done with perfection and I was completely engrossed early on.

This is sure to be a best seller!

From the very beginning this book takes off, and the reader is on the run with main character Brooke and her daughter Izzy. This wild ride is interspersed with short periods of calm and peace. Then the story picks right back up with the suspense.
The author weaves a story that is packed with action and provides the wrap up and happy ending that most readers of romantic suspense are looking for. This book is limited to kissing and the zings Brooke gets from being with her Cowboy.
Michael is a wounded warrior with an honorable and gentle heart. Michael and Brooke make a good pair. I’m happy with the ending.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book prior to publication.

Brooke is a woman in the run to protect herself and her daughter. They are being hunted by the man who killed her husband and is a Las Vegas police officer.

Going to the police is not an option, due to the fact that her hunter is a police officer and her father is a powerful senator. Brooke can’t trust them.

As Brooke finds herself in Montana, she ends up on a ranch with a veteran rancher (Michael) who provides more help and protection than Brooke ever expects. While they hatch up a plot to end what is happening to Brooke and her daughter, they find out that it is a much harder plan to extinguish.

Although this is might appear to be the usual woman in trouble and the man fights to protect her, there is so much more to the story. A little girl who may have witnessed the murder of her father and can no longer speak. A killer who wants them dead, but who else is involved in the need to silence the mother and daughter? Michael Calder finds a young girl knocking on the door of his cabin. She leads him to her mother’s car that has crashed. Brooke Steward is on the run from the men who want to kill her and her daughter, Izzy. She doesn’t want to drag Michael into their problems, but she is out of options. As Michael relies on assistance from his former captain, the killer is able to find them wherever they are…how is this possible? When they learn how he is tracking them they decide to end the threat, one way or the other. The betrayal runs deep and the final confrontation is deadly. Kathi Oram Peterson is a new to me author, and I thoroughly enjoyed this mystery/suspense/romance! Kathi’s writing style reminded me somewhat of Mary Higgins Clark and I think fans of hers will enjoy this mystery. It definitely started off with a bang and kept me anxiously turning those pages to find out what would happen next. Taking place in both Nevada and Montana, Ms. Peterson takes the reader on a rollercoaster ride as Brooke Steward and her six year old daughter Isabelle try to escape from the killer who murdered her husband.

Brooke is the daughter of a wealthy senator on the run with her daughter after her police officer husband is killed by his partner Gerald. Isabelle witnessed the murder and has refused to speak ever since. When Gerald catches up to them, Brooke and Izzy drive away just in time headed for Montana. After driving nonstop, Brooke drives off the road when she sleepily thinks Gerald’s BMW is coming toward them. With her mother lying unconscious after the accident, Izzy finds her way to Michael Calder’s horse ranch looking for help.

Michael is an Iraqi War veteran and recovering alcoholic suffering from PTSD. When Izzy arrives on his doorstep, he thinks she’s part of his nightmare. He soon realizes she’s real and follows her to her unconscious mother. Michael’s ranch offers sanctuary, and the horse therapy which proved so beneficial to his healing process promises hope for Isabelle. But trouble is never far away, and Gerald once again discovers their location. As they try to unravel the mystery of Gerald’s pursuit and Brooke’s husband’s death, it’s a game of cat and mouse which turns deadly at one point.

I have to admit this book kept me reading late into the night. It was definitely hard to put down. I enjoyed the relationship between Brooke and Michael. I also loved meeting Cap and his wife Little Bear Paw. Isabelle is a darling little girl who has been through a lot and definitely captures your heart. Her interactions with Sherlock the horse were so sweet and I loved the way horse therapy played a role in the story. The ending was surprising and almost hard to believe, however, I enjoyed the suspense and the way everything played out.

This mystery novel would most likely be rated PG. There’s some violence, betrayal, and mentions of alcoholism and drug use. There is no profanity and no sexual content other than kissing. I really enjoyed this romantic suspense and look forward to reading the author’s other books. I received an arc from the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions are my own and I was not required to provide a positive review.

This book grabs you with the first sentence and doesn't let go. It's full of action, suspense, and romance. It's one of those books that you hate to see end, but you just have to know what happens next. Loved it and highly recommend it! If you are a fan of clean romantic suspense, grab this book!

The blurb was more exciting than the actual book. This story was just not very original: brave widowed mother on the run for her life with her adorable daughter. Traumatized vet of war in the Middle East. Why am I so attracted to this person I barely know? She’s so brave/he’s so kind.

I did love the idea that Michael trains therapy horses, although I’m not 100% sure the author knows a lot about it. My freshman daughter is currently competing in speech and debate with a speech about horse therapy, and receives horse therapy herself, so we’re big believers and fans. I know that the idea of therapy horses is not central to the story, but I think the author—who does relate that her sister had benefited from her relationship with horses—could have done more research/explanation. Horse therapy is as close as we can get on this earth to actual magic.

There were some definite issues in this book as far as relationship to facts. “Whispering Pines” Montana (not a real town) is supposed to be somewhat near the Crow Reservation. That puts it in the south central part of the state. Yet the Flathead County sheriff’s department comes and retrieves a body. Flathead County, where I lived for six years, is an eight-hour drive and a mountain range away. There are a dozen counties that would be more logical. In addition, why would the county sheriff’s office be based in the tiny town rather than in the county seat? It doesn’t make sense. This is literally something that five minutes and Google would have fixed—but neither the author nor the editor appears to have gone to the trouble. Disappointing. Of course, I need to acknowledge that this is an advanced reader copy, and this error may have been fixed on final. I certainly hope so.

Likewise with the author saying someone was sliding like a “bobsledder on a luge”. As I write this, I’ve been watching the Winter Olympics. Bobsleds and luges are two separate apparatus.

I didn’t find any of the characters to be particularly engaging—go back to my opening paragraph about how they were unoriginal. The ultimate villain in the story was a cardboard cutout. The sudden revelation by Brooke’s mother was totally out of left field.

I did like when Michael was teaching Brooke about shooting—he points out some very important principles of gun safety. This book is squarely in the “guns can be useful but they are dangerous tools and must be treated with respect” camp—which is a thing that I respect.

Sorry, but there just wasn’t much to this book that would make it stand out in a positive way.

Possible Objectionable Material:
People get shot and killed. Some other minor violence. Perilous situations. Deception. Kissing.

Who Might Like This Book:
Fans of romantic suspense who don’t have high expectations for anything new or groundbreaking and who can overlook factual problems.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for my opinion.

Danger Unknown by Kathi Oram Peterson, 264 pages. Covenant Communications, 2022. $17.

BUYING ADVISORY: HS - ADVISABLE

Gerald has found Brooke again, which means she and Izzy need to leave tonight – now. Waking up from his recurring nightmare of his time in Iraq, Michael finds a little girl on his doorstep who leads him to her mother in a wrecked car. As Michael tries to help Brooke, he knows that she is hiding something, but Brooke can’t worry about this kind stranger who doesn’t understand how close Gerald is to catching them.
I was all in from the first page of Brooke’s story. Peterson reveals the complicated situation slowly throughout the book, keeping readers on edge as they wait to uncover the truth with Michael and Brooke. Watching the characters heal and grow during their challenges rather than waiting until the issues were resolved offers hope that the same will happen for readers in our own lives. The mature content rating is for mention of alcohol abuse and illegal activities; the violence rating is for persistent gun use and murder.

Kathi Oram Peterson is a new-to-me author, and she hooked me with the first three words in her new novel, Danger Unknown, "He's found me." As a lover of romantic suspense, I was hooked, and although I prefer my romantic suspense novels to have a little more romance and a lot more sizzle, this was still one really good, exciting, sweet, and suspenseful read, and it gets 4-stars from this reader.

Brooke Steward and her 6-year-old daughter, Izzy, have been on the run for their lives for the past six months, following the murder of Brooke's police officer husband, Brandon--in the garage of their home. We learn early on that he was murdered by his police partner, Gerald, the reason why is unclear at the outset, but we also soon learn that Izzy saw it happen, hid to save herself, and hasn't spoken a single word since it happened. They've been running from Gerald ever since, and no matter what fake name she uses, or how far from their Las Vegas home they travel, Gerald always seems to find them, although Brooke uses every bit of knowledge she possesses to evade him.

After spotting Gerald enter the diner where she was working under a false identity, she fled, packed up Izzy, who was hiding alone in a cheap motel, and took off driving, with no destination in mind, but she is so exhausted she eventually thinks she's sees Gerald's car behind her, swerves to avoid him, and eventually winds up driving off the road into a ravine, unconscious. Izzy, who steals every scene she's in, climbs out, looking for help for her mom, and finds it at the small equine therapy ranch owned by Michael Calder, a veteran with PTSD and a recovering alcoholic.

Since Izzy can't speak, her disheveled appearance speaks volumes, and Michael is soon following right behind her as she leads him to the site of the accident. As understated good guy heroes go, Izzy couldn't have found a better man to help them, and although Brooke doesn't trust easily, giving him another false identity, he's soon getting medical help for Brooke, who has a concussion, while helping Izzy regain her ability to speak, and he eventually goes on the run with with them, trying to understand what they're running from, and trying to keep them safe.

What follows is one heck of a suspenseful read and a slow reveal of who they're running from and why, as well as a slowly building attraction between Michael and Brooke. For readers who are offended by graphic sex scenes, rest assured that this novel has none. Although, when we learn who's behind Brandon's murder, who is behind it all, and the why of it, it did stretch my willing suspension of disbelief nearly to the breaking point, but what an exciting, shocking, surprising denouement, and what a sweet HEA finish, that I wish had either been longer or had included an epilogue.

Kathi Oram Peterson has proven herself to be an author whose novels I'd like to read more of, and I'm certainly happy to be able to recommend this one.

I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this novel. The opinions expressed are my own.

I adore unique fiction, and this is such an interesting premise. I recommend because of the story itself, writing style, and its ability to transport you into a different world.

I really enjoyed "Danger Unknown" by Kathi Oram Petersen. This book was non-stop action from beginning to the end. The characters were so well developed, and there was a huge twist near the middle of the book. I look forward to reading more books by Kathi Oram Petersen. I highly recommend this book if you enjoy good, clean romantic suspense fiction.

I received this book from the publisher through NetGalley for my honest opinion.

Kathi Oram Peterson has masterfully woven love into an intense, suspense filled page turner. If you've never read her books you should. Especially this one. I enjoyed learning more about equine (horse) therapy and it many uses as I watched the young Izzy heal from the trauma of seeing her father murdered. Watching her and her mother open up and join the world again was a joy.

4.5*

Buckle up!!! I feel like that is a fair warning for you before reading this book. Suspense and danger abound. Brooke and her daughter are running from their lives. From the opening words, "He's found me" the reader is taken on a wild ride full of twists and turns. I knew before I even picked up the book that I wouldn't want to put it down. That's how Kathi's books are for me. I want to read it all so I can figure out what is going on. I started it before bedtime and knew that probably wasn't the best idea. Ha! Not because of the suspense but because I knew I wouldn't want to put it down and fall asleep. I'd need answers and not sleep. *smirks* I know y'all know what I'm talking about!

When Michael opens his front door to a little girl who urges him to follow her, he has no idea what he's getting himself into. He's not one unfamiliar with danger though and is able to help Brooke and her daughter Izzy. I loved watching the trust between these three develop. At first it was very iffy but the more Michael does to help Brooke and her daughter, the more she knows she can't survive without him.

Around every turn danger is waiting for them. Brooke doesn't know who to trust, but she sure knows who to stay away from. I loved as the mystery and my questions about who was behind everything were revealed. All the "aha" moments brought more clarity. But even with that knowledge, the author still had some surprises waiting for me. So, buckle up!

Content: Clean. This book does have suspense and moments of peril but even with that in the book, I still believe it is a clean read. Nothing further than a few kisses.

I received a copy from the publisher, Covenant Communications, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

I love mystery/suspense/romance books. I went into this book excited to get into it. I have read a few other books by Kathi Oram Peterson, and enjoyed them well enough to want to get into this one as well.

I did enjoy the book. I thought it had a good premise and plot idea. There is a lot to like. But there were things that just left me feeling like I needed more. The romance didn't feel like it had been truly explored and I would have liked even more suspense. It felt like the timing was wrong, and that is so hard to say because I did like the book.

I enjoyed little Izzy. She didn't only thaw herself, but she thawed those around her. I enjoyed the goodness that people can have, and how it was showcased here. I enjoyed the overall plot of the book. I just wanted more.

Rating: 2.5 stars

This was one of those books where I'm not quite sure if it's me .. or the book. In the end, this story wasn't for me.
The writing didn't pull me in by any means.
The characters felt flat or personality traits forced.
The storyline felt unrealistic. Situations coming out of left field. For example, she never once monitored what her daughter was doing on the iPad? The twist at the ending. Having such an angry dad. The running with no Monday. Then on top of it.. the weird romance. The odd, way too quick forming, nicknames/petnames for one another. It was awkward and unnatural.
The thrill was 'fun' but not enough to keep my interested enough to give this book a rating higher than 2.5 stars rounded down to 2.
Also quick side annoyance, the title of the book doesn't make sense. I remember seeing the title in the story ... but ... the danger is known. We know where the danger is coming from the whole time/most of the time... So... as a very literal person, this doesn't make sense.

Part thriller, part suspense, with a dash of romance.

This hooked me right off the bat. I started and couldn't put it down. I loved the characters and was so surprised by their strength and integrity. Not many people in the real world would willingly help others to that extent having never met them.

The plot never let up and kept me wanting more. I stayed up until 1am to finish reading it, because I just had to know how it ended.

I also horse back ride, and loved the equine therapy aspect in this. It's something I absolutely love and I hope the author continues on with this subject in future novels!

I really enjoyed this, plan on purchasing a hard copy, and plan ok recommending it to others!

Brooke had no choice but to run as she knew that her & Izzy were in danger. She really thought that they would be able to hide but the killer has found them and she knows that he will never stop until he does what he has been paid for.
She doesn’t want to put anyone else in danger but Michael has offered to help them but she is still afraid of what is coming. Michael won’t let anything happen to Brooke & Izzy he just needs to find a way to keep them safe. He never thought that he would find someone that matters as much as they do. Will they be able to bring the killer to justice before they land up dead? Will they be able to find a way to be together? A good read enjoyed it.
