The same author as Anatomy of a Scandal & Little Disasters so I had big expectations for this one! And Sarah Vaughan delivered! I was instantly drawn to the story - it's starts with a bang! The next chapter then rewinds a bit and gives the back story that lead up to that point.
I was completely sucked in! I was guessing all the ways it could happen and what was going on. I found the on-line threats, the physical threat of the public, and the invasive feeling of the press all very realistic. I thought Emma's story was so sad - that she dealt with such a low simmer or terror every day just for doing her job and being a woman.
I liked the twist of the roommates, the daughter's drama and romance subplot. I think all of them drew out the character to give a fuller story as well as the additional POV giving us the full story from all sides. It was such a compelling way to tell the story and it was hard to stop! I never guessed what all happened and I enjoyed how it all played out and wrapped up. The note from author saddened me.
A huge thank you to the author and publisher for providing an e-ARC via Netgalley. This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.
I didn’t feel like the boom description was exactly accurate, about half of this book was a trial told in a courtroom. I’m not sure how these legal procedural books normally are but it was pretty repetitive. I was intrigued by the story but I heard parts of it 2-4 times between the main characters thinking about it, the prosecutors, the defense and then often a different main character going over the event from their point of view.
I loved Anatomy of a Scandal and this one truly was a great follow up. Thank you Atria for the ARC for my honest review.
This novel starts with a prologue involving British female politician Emma looking at a body on the floor of her home - then goes back several months as we see what led up to this happening, before going forward to a trial. Emma’s a bold politician fighting against revenge porn and other sexism - but also a protective mom of a teenage girl (whose perspective we also see, along with Emma’s ex-husband’s new wife), and someone who is increasingly scared by all the internet trolls and threats against her.
The book is not a thriller per se, but part mystery/suspense as we wait to see what happened and to who and why - and then part courtroom drama/legal thriller. Think a cross between Lisa Jewell and Jodi Picoult, so if you like their books, I’d definitely recommend this one!
Again another DNF for me. the story did not grab me and hold on. It was slow and boring and the characters were so unlikeable that I just couldn't even get past 75 pages.
This book was a very interesting read! It was a fun wild ride but I felt like it took me a bit to get into it and was hard to hold my attention in some areas. Overall, if you enjoy a twisty murder mystery this is a good book!
The intersect of mother and daughter plays with emotion and skill. Emma a politician with a spotless reputation is used to sacrifice. She has given it all to be where she is under the microscope that is life today. Flora is dealing with the terror that is teenage life and mother and daughter are both caught in a moment that will define life going forward. It’s is taut, explosive and a wonderful read. Happy reading.
I ended up DNF'ing this book around the 60 page mark. I thought that I may go back and pick it up but I have yet to do so. I couldn't engage with the plot surrounding the political theme and the authors writing of the characters just didn't grab my attention. This book also seemed long for a thriller and in the bit I read did not move quickly.
I would still be open to picking up further books from this author this book was just not the right one for me.
A big thank you to NetGalley and Atria Books for allowing me to read an advanced copy of this book.
This was a very slow paced thriller but it did take over my thoughts as I read it. I enjoyed the mystery and reputation meant everything.
Many thanks to Atria Books and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
Good binge worthy read! Fast paced with a strong female MC. It was a psychological thriller full of law, courtrooms & politicians. I did find the book slowed down after a strong start & some felt a little predictable to me.
I definitely wasn't expecting the bulk of this book to be a courtroom drama, but not going to lie, I did get very emotionally invested. Felt it dragged a lot in the middle and wow heavy trigger warnings, but solid read!
I may not have *loved* Sarah Vaughan's last novel, but I always enjoy reading her books, so it was a no-brainer for me to read Reputation. Much like Anatomy of a Scandal, there is a very strong courtroom drama aspect to the story, and there are many themes Vaughan decides to tackle. If you do read this, I highly recommend making sure you have a copy that allows you to read her author's note at the end because it is something I really appreciated even though it is short and concise. Obviously, reputation is talked about quite a bit throughout the story, and Emma is very keen to keep hers intact. She ends up feeling like a very unreliable narrator, and I couldn't help but think she was hiding something though I didn't know what. I liked the look that Vaughan gave us into a politician's life by having Emma be an MP (member of parliament), and she really opened my eyes to what their security (or lack thereof) is like, and how much women have to go through in this position.
I really liked the audiobook, which is narrated by Julie Teal, but this is another one of those books that would have really benefited from multiple narrators. The story is told mostly from Emma's POV, but we also have her daughter Flora and a handful of other viewpoints mixed in as well. This is certainly not saying anything in regards to Teal being a bad narrator or anything because she wasn't, but if there had been a full cast it really would have made the audio shine more than it did on its own with one narrator. Just my opinion though, and I do still recommend listening to it if you want to! I can't say I was incredibly shocked by the resolution to the story, but there were definitely a couple of things I wouldn't have EVER guessed, and I was a fan of the slow-burn ride Reputation took me on. Another engrossing read from Vaughan, and I can't wait for her next book!
Thank you to the publishers for my complimentary copies of this book. All opinions and thoughts are my own.
Thanks to Netgally and Atria Books for this e-arc.... DNF I really tried but could not get past 20%. I read the mixed reviews and tried to come back and power thru and read more but I could just not get into it. every time I looked down I was still at 20 %. I don't usually do this but I could not get into the book
I always look forward to Sarah Vaughan's books and was really excited to read this one. i enjoyed it alot! Thank you so much for the opportunity to read and review this one. Can't wait for the next one!
I was immediately invested in the revenge porn storyline. I started to zone out during the murder procedural, which was unfortunately most of the book.
This started out really strong with an interesting and unique ‘revenge porn’ storyline and I was super invested. however this really only lasts for the first 1/3 of the book and then it completely changes gears into a murder trial. I didn’t really connect much to the remainder of the book and it felt extremely repetitive, i really wish it would’ve expanded more on the original storyline
Thank you Atria books for providing me with an ARC of the book to read.
The book starts off with a body laying at the bottom of the stairs. Emma Watson is a MP in London who is very passionate about her job as a MP and was a teacher prior to getting into local politics. Her marriage collapsed as her husband had an affair with one of her daughter's teachers which felt like a betrayal between women. Her daughter is having issues at school and she's getting threatening letters, texts and emails.
This story kept my attention while I was reading it and I found it really interesting with so many different stories within this one but it was so well done that I was able to follow everything and I was curious as to how the story would unfold. The courtroom scenes were tense and I was curious to see what would happen. I enjoyed how this book had different points of view throughout the story at different times and it was done really well.
I read the description and was ready for a thriller, but that is not what I found this book to be. The first half of the book was slow and repetitive and I almost gave up a couple of times. It sped up in the end and I liked the way the actually mystery was told by witnesses in the trial, but the twists were pretty predictable and not very twisty. While I appreciate the advocacy for women’s rights I’m not sure the mashup totally worked in this particular book. It was more of a political mystery than anything. The writing was fine and I liked learning about the main character’s role of MP as I wasn’t very familiar with that. Emma is a political figure called an MP and her life is always on display. She advocates for women’s rights and issues and is met with disgusting and threatening messages on social media and by phone. Her reputation (and yes this word was used about a million times) is endangered both when her teenage daughter gets into some trouble and a tabloid reporter looking to expose her daughter is found dead after falling down the stairs at Emma’s house. Overall I give it 2.5 stars rounded up as I do appreciate the effort to bring light to injustices against women.
Rating: 2/5 Stars
Emma has given up a lot to be a female MP - including her marriage to her ex-husband and her relationship with her daughter Flora.
Emma’s core work is around her anti-revenge porn legislation stemming from one of her younger constituents taking their own life. When a man is found dead in Emma’s apartment and Emma is the key murder suspect, Emma finds herself fighting to protect her reputation, family and career at all costs.
Reputation explores what happens when you push someone to their breaking point - both mentally and physically and the disaster that comes after.
I had a really hard time with this book - I loved the author’s previous work Anatomy of a Scandal, but found it extremely difficult to like Emma throughout Reputation. She was grating as a character and the supporting cast made the story even more unlikable. The shining star of this story was Flora, who’s character doesn’t ever fully develop even if she is the trigger to the plot of the novel.
Thanks to NetGalley, Atria Books / Emily Bestler Books and the author for the ARC in exchange for my honest review!
Emma, a politician, is in the spotlight for her position on women's issues and also the subject of extreme vitriol and disguised threats from social media and mail trolls. A misstep by her 14 year old daughter has the potential to spin her career and reputation out of control. Then the body of a man she knows is found in her home and we're off on a courtroom drama. There are undercurrents of the way woman and men are treated differently in sexual, political and safety situations that were compelling.
