This books was so good! It had humor, suspense and it was adventurous. It kept me on my toes and I couldn’t put it down. I love the Stephanie Plum series and this is slightly similar but not the same. I cannot wait for more books in this new series.
A new series from Janet Evanovich, with Gabriela Rose, recovery agent. This looks like it will be another enjoyable series. Great, funny, characters. Great story and pacing. Can't wait for the next one in the series.
I've been an avid fan of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series for almost two decades. Although the last few were showing signs of struggle, I eagerly anticipated the author's new series, Gabriella Rose. The Recovery Agent is its debut book, and while there are some similarities, it's also quite different and good on its own account. Gabriella hunts and retrieves missing antiquities or artifacts, and this time, she kicks off her search in Ecuador. When that one humorously fails, she's pulled into a more personal treasure hunt that takes her back to her hometown and then all over South America again.
I enjoyed the character development and overall plot components of this installment. Gabriella's relationship with her ex-husband is amusing and he's highly reminiscent of a combo between Ranger and Morelli from the Plum series. I like him, and I definitely see the possibilities of them getting back together. The history of the missing treasure was fascinating, easily holding my attention. I was a bit let down by Gabriella's connection to her family. I wanted more from that part of the storyline, even in this first book. I'm sure it will come together. She ultimately comes across a little too cautious and standoffish, which can be good for a personality trait but not as the protagonist.
I'll read the second one... it's not as outright silly/funny as Plum, but it's also got a bit more substance to the relationship and story side. Looking forward to seeing where this one goes.
Gabriela Rose was introduced to readers in a recent Stephanie Plum novel. While Stephanie Plum spends her days tracking done bail skippers, Gabriela Rose spends her time hunting down insurance frauds and treasure, In this first novel, Gabriela finds herself looking for an old pirate treasure, escaping from a satanic cult, and saving her childhood home all while in the company of her ex-husband.
Evanovich has written another fast-paced read with compelling characters and some Romancing the Stone vibes. If you are looking for a quick weekend read, I would highly suggest The Recovery Agent.
This book kept me turning pages long in to the wee hours of the morning. Janet Evanovich has written another book that pulls you in and just won't let you go!
Gabriela Rose is a beautiful, independent, highly skilled, recovery agent who will locate whatever you are looking for. She has many successes under her belt, but her next job will test her in ways she couldn't imagine.
Gabriela's hometown is in dire straights after flooding nearly wipes it off of the map.
Her family and her town needs money and they need it fast.
Gabriela is going to Peru to look for the legendary Seal of Solomon ring from the Lost Treasure of Lima so she can help her family, but there is a big problem, her ex-husband Rafer has the map. A map that he got in the divorce settlement.
Rafer agrees to let Gabriela use the map, only, if he can come with her to Peru.
Once in Peru, Gabriela realizes that she isn't the only one who is after the ring, a crazy drug lord, who calls himself El Dragon wants it too.
El Dragon will stop at nothing to get the ring, and soon Gabriela and Rafer are battling for their very lives. The pair have to trek thru jungles, dive into the ocean, dodge bullets and that's just while they are in Peru. El Dragon and his minions follow Gabriela and Rafer to the States also.
From heart pounding action, to beautiful location descriptions, to laugh out loud dialouge this book really delivers.
This author always brings forth strong, independent, female characters. They may be a little quirky but they are characters that you can get behind and root for.
This book was a sort of Indiana Jones type read with a female lead character. It was engaging, exciting and funny. All of the secondary characters were personable or totally evil, which made you want to turn the page to see what would happen next.
You can't go wrong with this author. She just keeps getting better.
I was so excited to read the start of the new series from her. Typically Evanovich does a great job with the first handful of books in a series, and I expected a witty fun romp full of action and adventure, akin to the early Lizzy and Diesel or Stephanie Plum books. What I found felt like a bit of a cobbled together adventure story / drama that never really gelled for me. The characters felt two-dimensional and flat. The action wasn't really very active, and ditto the adventure. From the opening scene I felt like I kept waiting for things to click or get exciting, and they never really did. It just never drew me in, even remotely. It took way too much effort to keep trying to engage - and that's not what I am looking for in a book of this kind.
I was very excited to receive approval from NetGalley and the publisher to read and review this as I absolutely love Janet Evanovich. I absolutely loved the fun and entertaining writing style. There was so much action right from the first page and it continued until the very end. I love all of Janet’s books and I’m excited to see what’s next in this series.
CONTENT WARNING: violence, kidnapping, torture
Janet Evanovich popped onto my radar when my sister-in-law suggested I start reading the Stephanie Plum series, and I loved the hilarious antics of the most unlikely bounty hunter ever. So when I saw that there was a new series coming out, I knew I had to get my hands on it.
This book is the start of a brand new series that is basically a more competent Stephanie Plum mixed with Indiana Jones. As with all of the other books I’ve read by Janet Evanovich, this was an easy and fast read. However, I was thrilled to see how much action and humor was worked into the story.
Gabriela is a recovery agent, who earns a living by tracking down missing items, as well as determining if fraud is occurring. So when she is asked to hunt down the Ring of Solomon to help save her hometown, she can’t possibly resist. But in order to do so, she’s forced to work with her ex-husband. He’s very hot and knows her really well, so it makes it very hard for her to stay mad at him.
“He was sitting two rows in front of her. She couldn’t actually see him, but she knew he was there. He was like a blister on her heel. A constant irritation. And it didn’t help that he was smoking-hot and the flight attendant kept stopping to chat with him and at one point brought him warm chocolate chip cookies.”
Of course the witty banter between Gabriela, Rafer, and their various guides is hilarious. I was chuckling to myself while reading, and thanked my lucky stars that no one else was around to see it and realize how weird I truly am. And there was not a chance in Hell that this recovery was going to go smoothly. They face all kinds of obstacles, including trekking through dangerous jungles, drug lords, an absolute madman, and armed opponents. Not only that, but they’ve got to follow an obscure map that doesn’t really give them much information.
The story was very fast-paced, but never felt overwhelming. Evanovich has a sharp, staccato style of writing, using short sentences and keeping things light even when they’re facing extreme risks. It was a wild ride, and the plot twists kept things exciting. My only complaint is that the only dialogue tags used are basically “said” and “asked,” and it got a bit repetitive throughout the dialogue heavy book. This is one of those books where it would have probably been frustrating for me to listen to the audiobook, and was better as a print/digital book. However, I’m excited to see Gabriela’s next adventure, and whether Rafer comes back as a major player in her life.
Is it me or does it feel as if Evanovich isn't producing anything with care anymore?
For me, this story lacked character development and chemistry. Which includes chemistry between Gabriella and Rafer, even Gabriella and Marcella.
I loved her collab with Lee Goldberg -- so fun -- and wish she'd produce something with action, heat and sly wit like that again. Sadly The Recovery Agent isn't it for me.
Let me preface this by saying I look forward to this author’s new release each year. I know I’ll get a good story with good writing. This spin off has been on my to read list since the character was first introduced in the Plum series. That being said; it was a slow start for me. Normally I don’t want to put it down but this one I was ok setting down and starting another book. Could be because of what’s going on in my life but it just didn’t grab me at first. Maybe I’m a book snob and was just waiting for that wow factor.
Story was good and I look forward to the next in the series, as it did pick up and had many of evanovichs signature book aspects with humor and the lightness of characters.
Thought I was excited to read a new series by Evanovich, this was just ok for me. It was written in a similar manner as her other books and I didn't really feel like I was reading something "new". Overall it was a quick story and will be enjoyed by fans of Evanovich.
Thank you to the publisher and @NetGalley for the E-ARC copy of this book. The rating of this book is entirely of my own opinion. #NetGalley #TheRecoveryAgent
This is a fun and promising new series by Janet Evanovich. I have loved the Stephanie Plum series and was so happy that NetGalley let me review an advanced copy for an honest review.
This was such a fast-paced adventure including treasure hunting, grenades, guns, religious cults and more! I loved Gabriela and how she is so self-sufficient! I also loved the character of Rafer but wish he was more strongly developed.
There was so much action that I didn’t get as much character and relationship building as I wanted but I’m looking forward to the next to see what transpires between Rafer and Gabriela!
When Gabriela Rose’s grandma wants to sell a hidden treasure hidden so that she can rebuild her South Carolina home after it’s been devastated by a recent hurricane, she calls on her insurance fraud investigator granddaughter to help. Oh, it’s not her skills as an investigator that grandma is relying on, it’s Gabriela’s side job as a recovery agent that will come in useful.
What’s the treasure? Well, Gabriela is a direct descendant of Blackbeard and family stories tell of a diary and jewels hidden in a treasure box under the floorboards of the St. Vincent home. They hope to find a map leading to the Seal of Solomon, a ring guarded by the descendants of Spanish conquistadors. The sale of this ring should provide them with the $15M to revitalize Scoon, S.C.
The problem? Gabriela gave the Caribbean home to her ex-husband in a divorce settlement 7 years ago.
Solution? He insists she includes him in her expedition and provides witty banter and daring rescues as they traipse through the jungles in Peru and Costa Rica, and Ecuador working alongside a drug lord guide. As they search out antiquities appraisers in New York and California, they are pursued by an evil villain who won’t stop short of obtaining the object of Gabriela’s quest.
Not the adventure and excitement she was planning on for her 30th birthday, Gabriela is still in her element with wild flesh-eating panthers, ghosts who give directions, bad guys with tranquillizer darts, Jolly Roger flags and pirate ships….and the adrenaline rush she gets from fighting her ex-husband and outmanoeuvring the enemy.
Despite being disappointed at the play-by-play telling not showing adventure sequences, the whiplash resulting from around the globe travel at breakneck speed, and the lack of character depth, I’m confident that Evanovich’s new launch is sure to be a blockbuster! It’s the perfect blend of adventure, great characters and laughable moments that we’ve come to expect.
I was gifted this advance copy by Janet Evanovich, Atria Books, and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
3.75 stars
The Recovery Agent is a quirky, humorous, light-hearted new mystery series by Janet Evanovitch. It follows Gabriela Rose, a highly skilled recovery agent who specializes in finding things, specifically treasures, heirlooms and high stakes items, but this time, it’s personal!
Gabriela is on a mission to save her family’s town in the aftermath of a storm, and to do so she must face her ex-husband and find Blackbeard’s treasure, both treacherous feats! Recovery Agent is a story you can’t take too seriously,, as with all of Janet Evanovitch books, but it is also a quick, entertaining read and definitely good fun!
Janet Evanovich has always been hit or miss for me. The Stephanie Plum series started great, and eventually got predictable and silly. The Fox and O'Hare books are campy fun. This new series, featuring Gabriella Rose...I just couldn't get into. It felt like it took pieces from all the other books - the camp, the humor, the adventure...but without the payoff. It kept my attention while I was reading it, but wasn't memorable in the end. This series might be a pass for me.
Horrible. It’s like she put every bad action movie, unbelievable scenarios, and bad cliches in one book. Didn’t even feel like her writing. Not one laugh, it felt very forced. Just skimmed the last third to say I finished it. Bad.
A new series by Janet Evanovich begins with Gabriela Rose, finder of lost things, a freelance contractor who finds lost treasures and helps insurance companies with fraud cases. This time its personal. The small coastal South Carolina town she grew up in has been decimated by a hurricane and her family wants to stay and rebuild the town but lacks the money to do it before the big developers buy everybody out. Gabriela's grandmother, who communicates with a ghost named Annie, tells her of a hidden chest under her late Aunt's house that has the papers and treasure from the pirate Blackbeard, who they are distantly related to. Her only problem is the chest is supposedly under the house that she gave to her ex-husband in their divorce and to see if there is any truth to the ghost's story she will have to dig under his house. He catches her in the act and makes her include him in the quest. They find the chest which includes a diary supposedly of Magellan's which talks about a treasure in Lima that includes the infamous Ring of Solomon. If they can find this treasure they could use the money to restore their town. This begins a wild and dangerous adventure through jungles, drug lord's lairs, coco plantations and islands in search of the treasure. This is a fabulous non-stop adventure. Very unlike her other series this book focuses more on Indiana Jones,Lara Croft type action and far, far less on romance. This is an enjoyable start to a new series!!
Huge fan of Janet!! This is a new series(hopefully) that she is starting. Looking forward to more of these characters to come
