If you love other books by Janet Evanovich, then you will love this as well! This is a new series that follows Gabriela Rose, who is a recovery agent that is hired by all kinds of people to find all kinds of things. She can work many kinds of weapons, and knows how to access lots of information (she's got lots of contacts!). After she has a few troublesome jobs, she goes home to see her family, and gets sucked into a new job that she never expected. Paired up with her ex-husband Rafer, she goes on an adventure through the jungles of Peru and back to California to try and find The Ring of Solomon and the lost treasure of Lima. There is a crazy grandma, a whole bunch of side characters that are awesome, and a ghost named Annie.
I always love a Janet Evanovich book, so this was no exception. It reminded me of Indiana Jones, or National Treasure. It was a fun adventure, and I would love to see this made into a movie sometime. I hope she writes more books in this series, it was so much fun!
I was given an advanced reader's copy via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own
New series for the author. Interesting premise, but not really totally satisfying. Too much humor and silliness
for the seriousness of the job of finding things "lost" by her clients. May appeal to some, but I'll pass.
I absolutely love the Stephanie Plum series and I was excited to try a new series by the same author, this book tried so hard to have the same quirk that Stephanie has, but none of the charm. It just wasn’t for me.
For the lovers of Janet Evanovich, this is a must read! Includes mystery and romance and I could not put it down!
Janet Evanovich has started a new series with The Recovery Agent Gabriela Rose. Gabriela's family is in danger of loosing their home and town to developers unless she follows a family legend of a treasure hidden by Drake.
Her ex husband Reefer barges into the search as does a criminal madman El Dragon. Jungle and underground exploration with the help of South Americans who have links to the drug trade. What could go wrong? Fast moving adventure.
I have been reading Janet Evanovich for so many years. Its so exciting to have a new series. The Recovery Agent was different than her other more popular series, but equally as good. The mystery and action were fantastic and I loved all the characters. Can't wait for the next book in this series. I read this book in one sitting!
Recovery Agent Gabriela is determined to do whatever she can to save the town her parents live in from hurricane devastation, Her grandmother’s ghost friend tells her to search for the Seal of Solomon, part of a long lost treasure, because selling it will raise enough money to rebuild the town. Gabs ends up pairing with her ex-husband and a cast of slightly immoral yet incredibly generous drug runners and ends up on a wild hunt for the lost treasure, facing a crazed, tattoo’d, fanatic along the way.
I love Janet Evanovich’s books and the dry humor in them,, and I was excited to see her starting a new series. I’ll admit it got off to a slightly rocky start and maybe had too many similar themes with Stephanie Plum, but as the story progressed I enjoyed this book more and more. The quirky characters, hysterical mess ups, and a bit of steamy romance round it out.
Thank you Net Galley for the advanced copy!
Thank you
I am a huge fan of Janet Evanovich, so I was excited to be able to read an advanced reader's copy! While I liked the premise of this, it felt very similar to the Kate O'Hare series. I felt like I was reading something I had read before. It was entertaining, but not my favorite.
Can’t help but compare to the Plum series,,, this is campier with far more sarcasm and slapstick. In this first book, Evanovich weaves an impressive tale spanning continents and cultures. I laughed, I raised my eyebrows, and I totally enjoyed the ride. Pick it up when you’re ready to take life a little less seriously.
I confess I wasn't particularly fond of Gabriela Rose when she first appeared in a recent Stephanie Plum novel. I'm so glad I gave her first full-length novel a chance.
Gabriela Rose is like a more competent Stephanie Plum. She's tough. She'll get thrown a few curveballs and persevere. She has a great cast of supporting characters. She even has a great relationship with her eccentric grandma. Her adventures tend to be more global, so following her antics should offer up some exciting new venues. This one felt a little Indiana Jones, but I'm not complaining. You know with Janet Evanovich, you're in for a crazy, far-fetched adventure, but it's fun! I'm hoping there's a book 2 coming and I'm hoping her new sidekicks, Pepe and Caballo, make an appearance.
Thanks to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for allowing me to read an advanced copy.
Janet Evanovich is at it again with a new series. If you liked Stephanie Plum, this one's for you. Divorced couple Gabriella and Rafter set off into the jungles of South America to recover an ancient artifact. There's adventure, comic relief, and steamy "almost" scences. It was a fun read. Recommened.
I've read many books by Janet Evanovich and have enjoyed them all. This one was no different. Her books are faced pace and easy to read. Great characters that are easy to root for. I highly recommend this book.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with this ARC.
Description from NetGalley:
Lost something? Gabriela Rose knows how to get it back. As a recovery agent, she’s hired by individuals and companies seeking lost treasures, stolen heirlooms, or missing assets of any kind. She’s reliable, cool under pressure, and well trained in weapons of all types. But Gabriela’s latest job isn’t for some bamboozled billionaire, it’s for her own family, whose home is going to be wiped off the map if they can’t come up with a lot of money fast.
Inspired by an old family legend, Gabriela sets off for the jungles of Peru in pursuit of the Ring of Solomon and the lost treasure of Lima. But this particular job comes with a huge problem attached to it—Gabriela’s ex-husband, Rafer. It’s Rafer who has the map that possibly points the way to the treasure, and he’s not about to let Gabriela find it without him.
Rafer is as relaxed as Gabriela is driven, and he has a lifetime’s experience getting under his ex-wife’s skin. But when they aren’t bickering about old times the two make a formidable team, and it’s going to take a team to defeat the vicious drug lord who has also been searching for the fabled ring. A drug lord who doesn’t mind leaving a large body count behind him to get it.
I have read some of the author’s Stephanie Plum books, the first 7 or 8 of them. This first book in a new series is set/reads a lot like the Stephanie Plumb books, so if you like/love that series, this one's for you. I thought it was okay. Rafer was a bit annoying as were some of Gabriela’s reactions for being a professional recovery agent.
Overall: 3/5
*3.5 Stars. This was a fun and cute book that seemed like a PG-13 movie with the violence glossed over. The same snarky banter was there with our main character, but I'm not sure it was light-hearted enough to take away from the sheer body count in this book. I loved the way the story wrapped up and that things didn't happen at all the way I thought they would. This was a decent, plot-driven story with okay character development. I will be reading the next book when it is available.
Strong Stephanie Plum vibes: quick, light, minor action, sexual tension, if you've read any J.E. you know the drill. I liked it, but I didn't love it.
I love this new series! Gabriela is a treasure herself! Evanovich has a knack for telling a story.
Many thanks to Atria and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
This book followed the format of many of the author's other books. I felt that it was too similiar to the Stephanie Plum series, but not as enjoyable. In the book, Gabriela Rose is a recovery agent who is working on finding a lost legendary ring to help her family's hometown recover from a disaster. Gabriela works with her ex-husband Rafer on this journey. I liked the Stephanie Plum books, but did not enjoy this new sereis as much. There was a lot of violence in the book that I also was not expecting. It was an adventurous book with not a lot of substance, but it did make for a quick, easy read.
Okay, The Recovery Agent was pure fun. It's been a while since I read a Stephanie Plum novel -- I think I stopped reading them regularly when they'd reached the late 'teens -- so it was nice to be reintroduced to the world of Evanovich's writing.
And yes, Gabriela Rose from The Recovery Agent does very much inhabit the same world as Stephanie Plum. In fact, Gabriela Rose basically is Stephanie Plum...but with more jungle adventures, less ditziness, and the ability to use a firearm without making a fool of herself. Gabriela is a recovery agent specializing in insurance fraud, but now she's trying to save her hometown, Scoon, which was recently devastated by a hurricane. She's on a mission to recover the Ring of Solomon, a mystical and priceless legendary artifact. Her ex-husband Rafer joins her, along with a cast of lovable criminals, as their treasure hunt takes them to exotic locations across the globe and puts them directly in the path of some bad guys who want the Ring for their own nefarious purposes. Cue high-stakes adventure, gunfights, and explosions.
The Recovery Agent is one of those books that just goes down easy between more serious reads. Evanovich doesn't cover a lot of new territory character-wise, but it was fun to read about Gabriela's jungle adventures. This novel is kind of like Stephanie Plum meets Indiana Jones with a dash of Dan Brown's Dr. Robert Langdon thrown in for some spice. It's an addictive combination, and I will definitely be continuing with the series.
Gabriela Rose is the recovery agent: she makes her living by recovering assets or items for clients. In this case, she is working a personal angle to save her hometown of Scoon, which has been devastated by a wicked storm. Gabriela is seeking an ancient, but powerful ring, called The Seal of Solomon. However, there is a murderous cult leader who also wants to possess the ring and will stop at nothing to get it. Gabriela is a sort of Indiana Jones/Lara Croft, and has her girl Friday to help her research on the Internet. She is forced into partnering with her ex-husband, for whom she still feels a strong sexual attraction. A bit ho-hum for me. 2.5 stars, rounded up.
I'm a long-time reader of this author and I love the Stephanie Plum books for summer beach reading. I didn't love the Fox and O'Hare books, but I had high hopes for this series because I do love Indiana Jones-type adventures. In the end, this book was not the home run that Stephanie Plum's books are, but it was still very entertaining. I was hoping for more laugh out loud moments or over the top situations, as the whole adventure seemed very bland and expected. I'm going to hold out hope that other books in the series will build on this foundation and rachet up a notch or two. Gabriella is a strong and smart hero, but I found myself hoping she'd take more chances and get into more sticky situations. Also, as often as I have rolled my eyes at the love triangle in Stephanie Plum books, I found myself missing it in this book. Ultimately, I'll continue to read this series, because it's certainly a comfortable read.
