I love a strong female character so I had an inkling I was going to enjoy this book from the start. I loved that there was more of a serious tone to this book with some depth. All around it was a solid and enjoyable read! Was it groundbreaking and a top read of 2022? No but I would still have no problem recommending it one bit!
Evanovich has done it again. She never misses with her formula of relatable female lead, dreamy but frustrating love interest, and a funny grandma.
A bit different than the classic Evanovich series and the plot is a bit more serious than some of the others that I have read with plotlines that included drug running, violence, and cults. That said there were multiple times I laughed out loud and had to go back and highlight funny one liners. There is a good balance of serious and funny moments, with a good match of bickering ex-spouses (I do wish there had been more banter!) and while the plot felt slow at times, this book is a great summer read. I look forward to more in this series.
Gabriela Rose is a recovery agent who seeks lost treasure and missing assets. Gabriela is also a direct descendant of the pirate, Blackbeard, which comes in handy when a ghost that speaks to her grandmother informs her of a chest containing a treasure map hidden in her old house. Gabriela hopes to use the treasure to rebuild her hometown, Scoon, S.C., which has been devastated by a hurricane. One problem. The house now belongs to her ex-husband, Rafer. Rafer agrees to let her have it as long as he gets to tag along. Soon the pair are on their way to Peru on the trail of the ring of Solomon.
As the two are driving, rafting, and traipsing through the jungles of Peru, they learn that a crazed cult leader/drug lord is also interested in the treasure. Now they are on the run through South America, Central America, New York, and California. The question isn't just will they find the treasure but will they escape with their lives!
The Recovery Agent is a light, fun, fast-paced thriller with many of the elements that Janet Evanovich brings to all her books. A strong female protagonist, romantic attraction, humor, and a lot of action. Interesting and funny secondary characters also come along for the ride. Thompson and Mickey are two, in particular, I hope to see reappear in future installments. Recommended for fans of light-hearted thrillers and particularly for Evanovich fans.
I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher.
The idea of the main character being a recovery agent of lost, stolen or missing things is an appealing one. However, this book is a bit ridiculous with her personal mission conceived by a ghost, reconnecting with her ex-husband, finding something no-one found despite many attempts, fighting drug lords and lots of killings. This being said, The Recovery Agent read smoothly and quickly and with some humorous parts it did hold my attention. ,
I've been looking forward to the start of this new series from Janet Evanovich. The relationship between Gabriella and her ex, Reader is fraught with tension and just enough angst. I hope there's no love triangle (please). Overall, I would recommend for fans of her writing style. Will it stick with me? No, but I think that's okay.
I received this book as an ARC copy free of charge on NetGalley. The Recovery Agent is book one of a new series by Janet Evanovich. It is about a woman named Gabriela who works as a recovery agent, finding lost things mainly to prove insurance fraud, but occasionally she travels looking for lost or stolen artifacts to return to their rightful owner. In book one, she takes on a very personal task and pairs with her ex-husband on the adventure. They end up competing for the lost item with a cult leader and teaming up with some very quirky characters. Overall, I enjoyed this book immensely. I would have liked a little more background on the main characters and their former relationship, but I imagine it will unfold as it is meant to be a continuing series. The side characters were a lot of fun and I sincerely hope will be a regular cast of characters in the rest of the series. If you enjoy any of the authors other books, you will definitely enjoy this one and if you haven't read anything by Janet Evanovich, starting here will make you a fan.
Dollycas’s Thoughts
Recovery Agent Gabriela Rose finds lost treasures and she is an expert at what she does. Now it is her own family that needs her help. Their town has been destroyed by a recent storm and they have to act fast if they are going to save it. According to an old family legend, they are connected to the Lost Treasure of Lima which includes The Ring of Solomon. Finding it could bring a huge payout for her family. She agrees to use her talents to find it but first, she needs to locate the map she needs to start her quest. That means she needs to go to the home her ex-husband received in the divorce. As soon as he learns of her plans he decides to accompany her on the adventure. In between fighting like an old married couple and fighting off a dangerous drug lord they do make a pretty good team. Now they just need to find the treasure and live long enough to save the little South Carolina town where they grew up.
Snakes! Snakes!! SNAKES!!!
I love Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series so I was excited to see her take on another strong woman’s adventures. She exceeded all my expectations. Gabriela Rose is a fantastic protagonist with guts and grit. She is strong, smart, determined, and courageous. A female Indiana Jones! She goes into places most people can’t even imagine and she absolutely loves it. She is joined on her current quest by her ex-husband Rafer. He is strong and smart as well but a bit of a slob. He is “disturbingly hot” though at “six feet two and nicely muscled”. They have their issues but they have each other’s back and make a terrific team. They also take their family’s needs to heart and it drives them to succeed. I really like these characters and am anxious to see how their relationship continues to play out as the series continues.
They travel to the jungles of Peru and Costa Rica and on to California to find their treasure with side stops in New York and South Carolina and come in contact with a variety of people. Some very bad people who have no problem killing people to get what they want or people at random. Some mostly good people who want to help them but have questionable occupations and histories. Then you have the SNAKES!! They seem to be everywhere. The human characters are very well crafted. Some are slimy as the snakes while others will have you rooting for them along the way.
This story is a true adventure and action-packed, I was completely captivated by the history of the missing treasure and how many people had searched and were still searching for it. I really enjoyed the underwater descriptions but each place Gabriela and Rafer traveled was wonderfully described to paint a vivid picture. You would never catch me on a trip to most of these places but I sure had a good time tagging along virtually with these characters, well except for the snakes.
Ms. Evanovich threw in some fantastic twists. With all the explosions and bullets flying the suspense was kept at a high level. A gripping novel it was almost impossible to put down. I only took two very short breaks and stayed up late to finish it all in one sitting not even worrying about the book hangover I would have the next day.
It wouldn’t be an Evanovich novel without her signature humor and this book has it in spades. Whether in the downtime or in the most stressful situations she places the funny absolutely perfectly.
The Recovery Agent was a spectacular story and a sensational debut for this series. I am looking forward to many more escapades with Gabriela Rose. This one was entertaining and fun and I can’t wait for more. Maybe with fewer Snakes! You will find The Recovery Agent on my Best Reads List for 2022. Did I mention there were a lot of snakes?
Gabriella Rose is on a mission to recover The Seal of Solomon, an ancient ring. She is sent across the world to track down the ring from a drug lord. Reluctantly, her ex-husband Rafer joins her on this adventure. They start their journey going through a jungle. This leads them into danger of El Dragon, a drug lord, who is in possession of the treasure. Gabriella and Rafer enlist the help of some locals to help try to track the treasure down. They end up invading the house of the drug lord.
I found the book a little slow in the middle. However, the beginning and ending are good. The ending of the book invites a sequel and I look forward to her next adventure.
Gabriela is recovery agent and makes good money at it. Her hometown has been destroyed by nature so she wants to find a big treasure that will pay well so she can help the town.
Atria Books and Net Galley let me read this book for review (thank you). It has been published and you can but a copy now.
She has a plan and figures she can find the treasure she wants. But she doesn't count on the men who want to kill her...
Her ex-husband offers to help and she accepts. With two of them and the people they know, they find it. But the bad guy steals it.
There is a lot of danger, everybody gets hurt and you aren't sure how it's going to turn out.
There is surprise at the end...
Interesting start to a new series. I liked the mystery and the storyline was entertaining. I liked the characters but I’m not in love with them yet. I am looking to see how the developer in the next book in the series.
All thoughts and opinions are my own, and in no way have I been influenced by anyone.
Another mysterious romantic read by Evanovich I love how her books always have laughter, mystery and a strong female protagonist. The story line was just as funny and catching as always!
I loved this book! Reminded me of Raiders of the Lost Ark when it came to recovering an item from biblical times and Romancing the Stone when it came to the slowly rekindling romance between Gabriela Rose and her ex-husband Rafer. I really look forward to the next book in this series. I have a full video review on my YouTube channel, Robin Loves Reading and All the Things, at https://youtu.be/Aicyz5yOC-s.
While the Stephanie Plum series is an auto-buy, I had not read Janet Evanovich’s other series; I plan to follow this one though. There were snakes and a lot of killing but I still really loved the suspense and humor. Definitely a 5-star read.
Love love love this new series of Janet Evanovich's!!!!!!!!!!! Gabriella Rose is the ultimate bad*** woman we need right now!!!!! This new series is definitely gonna be a big hit in this readers opinion
The Recovery Agent is a quick fun read filled with great humor and a wonderful cast of characters. This is book one in a new series by Evanovich. Readers of the Stephanie Evanovich series will recognize the main character, Gabriela Rose, who appeared in Fortune and Glory. Fans of Evanovich will like this new series. It has all of the elements we see in her widely popular Stephanie Plum series including the romantic tension and a larger than life grandmother. Overall, it's a fun read and worth a shot. The treasure hunting plot was a lot of fun and I loved that the plot wasn't overshadowed by the silliness. It's definitely a fun read and start to the series. I will definitely pursue the next book and look forward to the continuation of Gabriela's adventures.
The Recovery Agent by Janet Evanovich is the start of a new series. It takes place, mostly out in the jungle where Gabriela Rose and her ex-husband, Rafer, are searching for a ring stolen from the Inca hundreds of years ago. Gabriela needs the money to rebuild the town she and Rafer had grown up in: Scoon, South Carolina, which had been devastated by a hurricane. Her grandmother's best friend was a ghost named Anna, and Anna had information on how to find this ring. Gabby didn't really believe in ghosts, but Anna had been right too often to discount her existence. The trunk with the information in it was in the bedroom floor of Rafer's house, which had been Gabby's house until she had given it to him in the divorce. So off she went to St. Vincent to liberate the trunk and begin her search for buried treasure. Gabby was a recovery agent, which meant that more often than not she was on a treasure hunt anyway. This turned into much more than she could have predicted.
This book wasn't really my cup of tea. I am a huge Stephanie Plum fan: she makes me laugh, and I am not a laugher. This book was not especially humorous. It was an adventure, an adventure with lots of shooting and other miscellaneous dangers, including serious drug runners. There was a ton of description of tramping through the jungle, stepping around snakes, and avoiding other inconveniences of being in the jungle. I was, in many ways, a more violent sort of Indian Jones' adventure. If I am going to read a thriller, which is irregular at best, I am going to read one that is more serious than this one.
I was invited to read a free e-ARC of the Recovery gent by Atria, through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #netgalley #atria #therecoveryagent #janetevanovich
This new series rocks. The characters are fun and funny. The storyline was complex, a bit bloodier than one might predict, but it holds together and seems necessary for the plot and these characters. I can’t wait for the next adventure. This is a seriously good series beginning. Definitely a must read.
Stephanie Plum's creator comes up with a new free-spirited female character in Gabriella Rose, The Recovery Agent. Gabriella finds lost things as a profession but this time it’s personal.
Gabriella's grandmother has a kooky idea to save their small Southern fishing town from developers. So, Gabriella is soon searching for treasure in the Amazonian rainforest with her hunky ex-husband, Rafer. Will they find a valuable artifact? Will they be able to keep their hands off each other? Or will they die a horrible death? This is the first in a new humorous adventure series so don’t bet on the last one.
The first book in a new series always spends a long time setting the scene and explaining the characters. This book moves relatively quickly despite that requirement. It is a light easy read perfect for a beach or a long airplane ride. While it is not as laugh-out-loud funny as the Plum books, The Recovery Agent does have some humorous situations. I am definitely looking forward to the next Gabriella Rose adventure. 4 stars!
Thanks to Atria Books and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.
This was the perfect reading escape I needed. As a fan of Stephanie Plum from the very beginning plus everything else she has written, I was eager to dive into this new series. What fun! Gabriella Rose is on the case. She is an expert at finding things, working for various entities to recover things lost. Now her client is her own family. A storm has pretty much flatten their home town of Swoon, South Carolina and it will take a boat load of cash to save it from developers. But, wait! Grandma Fanny comes up with the solution. Track down a lost treasure. And so it begins - off to the jungles of Peru with her hunky, laidback ex-husband, Rafer (because he has the journal) and straight into the cross hairs of a nasty drug lord. Full of action, humor and a great cast of characters, this was so good, I can't wait to see what's next.
My thanks to the publisher, Atria Books and to NetGalley for giving me an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
