An engaging story about a great explorer and scientist! I think kids that are interested in adventure will be drawn in by the true tale of Alexander von Humboldt!

'Alexander von Humboldt' by Peter Nys is the first book in the Great Minds series. A series about science and curiosity.

As a young child Alexander von Humboldt liked to collect and compare animals and rocks. Later he became a mine inspector. This led him to take voyages to far off places like South America and make many discoveries.

The story is great. The illustrations are fun. It's a good book for the little explorer in your life.

I received a review copy of this ebook from Clavis Publishing and NetGalley. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.

I found this book really interesting and educational. It is a children's book, from the Great Minds series, which focuses on the scientist Alexander von Humboldt, who is the father of the climate movement. The book is suitable for children aged 9 and over. I enjoyed reading about Alexander's travels around the world, and about all the science adventures he had. There is a lot of knowledge in the book, which is amazing to read about. I loved all of the book, except for some of the fonts, which I found hard to read. The information in the book is superb, but I would like to have found it easier to read the text. I still highly recommend this book though, as it is very useful, and children will learn a great deal from it.

Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The fascinating life of a true adventurer. He starts early, curious and amazed of what he can find in his surrounding. As a young man, he found a friend with same curiosity, and instead following Napoleon to Asia, they've been sent to America and found so many interesting things there. One amazing personality who kept his eyes on things people rarely remark.

This nonfiction book takes a look at a little known scientist Alexander von Humboldt. He was an all over general scientist who explored the world and gave us the beginnings of ideas we know today such as plate tectonics are ways to measure etc. This book is quite lovely to look at and decently well done. Don’t go into reading it thinking it’s going to be a story it’s not it’s much more biographical information points, along with other ideas, and things to study. It actually at times feels a bit like an info dump or an idea dump.. However overall I think it works. This is part of the great mind series and I wouldn’t like wouldn’t mind seeing what else they have in their collection.

I'm really amazed at how little that I've absorbed about Alexander von Humboldt in my 56 years. I really wish that I had learned more about the man when I was in school! This children's book has tons of information on this very interesting man born in 1769; who was one of the first to propose that the lands on each side of the Atlantic were at one time joined and also an early identifier of climate change.

This is a children's book that is inspiring a retiree to read more about Alexander von Humboldt. Does it get better than that?

I'd like to order this book for my niece and nephew (who are 3 and 5); I'm hoping that it inspires them to dream big as well!

Thank you to NetGalley, Peter Nys the author, Conz the illustrator (great job! ... love the Climate Change signs ... There is no Planet B) and the publisher Clavis Publishing. This honest review is in exchange for the opportunity to read and review the advance read copy of Alexander von Humboldt. Publication date is 22 Mar 2022.

We are a house of scientists, and I actually work in environmental impact- so when I saw this book, I had to read it ❤ Thanks @netgalley ! The recommendation says 9-10 years old, but I am sure my 8-year-old would love it, and some things are fit even for my 4 year old. Of course he won't be able to follow along everything, but he might even do some of the experiments. Absolutely lovely book for any budding scientist ❤ The illustrations are amazing, but as you might guess, my favourite are the proposed experiments!

Kiddo (2nd grade) and I read this after reading a truly excellent biography of Alexander von Humboldt that was much longer. I was curious about how Humboldt's story would be presented in this much shorter format, and if the author would choose to highlight the same information.

This is actually quite a good summary of the events covered in more detail in the other book. There is also a greater focus in this book on Humboldt's role in climate science and activism.

The pictures are colorful and engaging and really draw the reader in. The additional information and activities presented in the sidebars are cool but I wish they'd used a different font. The script font is often difficult to read and did decrease our enjoyment of those sections somewhat - we were tempted to skip them altogether. If I hadn't been reading this along with my kiddo, they would have skipped them because they would have been unable to read them.

Overall this is a great introduction to Alexander von Humboldt and his love of and contributions to many different branches of science and we enjoyed reading it very much and recommend it.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for sending me a free copy of this title in exchange for an honest review.

This was a really cool little book introducing kids to an important historical scientist. The art was fabulous and it did a good job of keeping things pretty simple for kiddos who enjoy science.

I personally learned a lot from this book and am interested in seeing the rest of the titles in the series.

My one complaint is that there's a good amount of a scripted font used for things written on scroll images and I found that relatively difficult to read. I wish it had been a regular (printed) font that was easier to parse.

Pros: I love children's nonfiction books because they give me an overview of new-to-me topics. When I saw the cover of this book, I was at first embarrassed to admit that I did not know anything about Alexander von Humboldt. However, that embarrassment reminded me why we read--to learn! The illustrations in this book are fantastic as were the fun facts and activities for readers. I look forward to more books in this series because there are so many scientists to learn about.

Cons: There was more text on the page than I was expecting, so I think this book is for older kids who are strong readers or would be great to read with an adult.

Thank you to NetGalley and Clavis Publishing for the opportunity to read this book.

I greatly enjoyed this little book about the first climate activist! I honestly knew very little about Alexander von Humboldt but his story is so incredibly inspiring and it is a good example of how a love of science compounds on itself.

He began his life categorizing plants and animals and later designed devices for human safety, traveled and learned about our world and climate. His initial interest grew and grew until he was an expert it many different things.

A touch that I think will be especially good for the children who read this book is the attention to details. The drawings were wonderful and anything that could increase a child’s knowledge was pointed out (like the sphinx, Napoleon, math equations, etc…) even if the book didn’t directly label them.

I would buy this book for any elementary student and would love for them to have more books like this.

This book has some really beautiful illustrations. I liked the fun facts and little activities throughout and thought these would be really engaging for children and build more of a buzz about Humboldt. However, I was quite disappointed with the book in the whole. There seemed to be a lot of changing between story style and non-fiction style writing and it didn't really go into any details about any aspects of Humboldts life or discoveries, it was all very vague, basic information.

Beautifully illustrated and chock full of inspirational research ideas, this precious little book packs a real punch. Describing the life of humanist and naturalist Alexander von Humboldt, this biography includes probing questions, academic and artistic challenges, and career explorations. Connections abound with math, attics, physiology, biology, ecology, meteorology, geology, history, art, and so much more! Kudos to author Peter Nys for packing so much information and curiosities into just 24 pages. The artwork is magical with classical references from other renaissance men. A fabulous resource for a class, school, and home library. As the dedication page proclaims, roll up your sleeves and get ready to explore and learn!

I mainly picked this up for the book cover but god DANG this was such a fun ride! It was great curling up in my bed while doing online school and just getting sucked into the characters’ world and their relationships

An interesting Children's non fiction about the life of Alexander von Humboldt who started the fight for climate change as far back as the 19th century. Informative and the art style is nice as well. Perfect for elementary libraries and classrooms. It's way more interesting to learn about scientists and historical figures from books like this than a textbook!

Very informative and wonderful illustrations. I found the writing a bit piecemeal and choppy. I think a more narrative driven biographies often captures children’s interest more than a solely fact-based book. I really liked the experiments and extra information provided throughout the book. I think some of the vocabulary would be challenging for young readers and a glossary would’ve been a good addition.

Hmmm... A bit busy, a bit worthy, a bit clumsy, this is a book for the top end of primary school ages concerning Alexander von Humboldt, the polymath scientist, traveller, writer and explorer. The book starts by building up to the launch of his first major trip, that left him in the Americas for getting on for five years. But I wasn't convinced the things he is supposed to have done there – seen a connectivity between all of nature while stuck up a volcano, witnessed an earthquake, etc – were of huge interest to a primary school audience. Also, throughout the book we get box-out asides that generally result in us having homework to do – researching our locality for small things to put in our own museum, checking into history, making timelines, and so on. All this just adds up to the feel that this is a little over-stuffed, even if the main narrative is a brief paragraph per page and no more, and geared up too heavily towards knowledge and critical thinking and research, as opposed to what entertainment it can provide. Finally it settles down to the fact that he was thinking about water levels and climate and factory pollution, centuries before they became common ideas, but the visuals jar a little in trying too hard to prove the man is relevant today. It all means that while this is thoroughly well-intentioned and worthwhile, it really didn't smack me as a book that a younger me would have actually liked.
