Astronomers and what they do
is such a cute book that is both entertaining and educational! It’s perfect for the 5-7 year old age group as it walks you through the day to day activities of an astronomer. There are fun facts throughout that are informative and in an age-appropriate manner to hold the interest of a child.
I highly recommend to librarians, teachers and parents who are looking for a book that has educational value! The illustrations are a bonus, they are wonderful!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an eARC of this book in an exchange for an honest review, it was my pleasure!
An informative book for young curious readers. The book contains a well detailed information of what astronomers do, and includes fun facts about space. The style of language is presented in its simplest form for young readers to comprehend (which helps them to engage reading the content).
Overall, this book is a must- have resource in the libraries, and a wonderful present for curious future stargazers. Target ages- 5 years and above.
I read this children's book with my daughter, and we both enjoyed it a lot. We found it really fascinating and interesting, and I even learned a few new things that I didn't already know, so that was great! My daughter was asking me lots of questions, and she seemed really interested in the subject, which was about what an astronomer is and the type of work that they do. We learned about what astronomy is, the tools an astronomer uses, and what it is that an astronomer is researching and gathering information on.
The graphics are beautiful and very colourful, and the book is easy to read, even though it still contained a lot of useful and interesting information. What I liked is that the information was not overwhelming, and it was fun to read, so it was great for both of us, as sometimes we find it hard to focus on things that are too long. I felt uplifted after I had read the book, and full of happiness, as though it had lit me up inside. I guess I just find it amazing that there are so many awesome things out there in the universe!
Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book was so cute!
As an adult I officially learned something (I had no idea that there were red and blue stars).
I loved the fact that the astronomer was a girl, and I loved the focus on both the astronomer’s day to day life and the various discoveries in the sky.
I also loved that the reader is given a little job to look at the moon!
This would be perfect for any child!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for sending me an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is a great title. It includes real (accurate!) scientific information at a level that is much more accessible for young readers. I also love that the astronomer in our story is a woman!
The end of this book includes some trivia and facts about our solar system and about stars in general. It also includes so information about how to be a good stargazer and how to use the sun to find north/south/east/west.
Overall very informative, but still super fun. Highly recommend for parents of scientifically-minded kiddos.
A good, basic introduction into astronomy. In parts a bit too simplified, in my opinion, but mostly sound information. Images make text easier to access for young readers. Written in a style that makes it easy to read to kids. Little interjections welcome reactions from the reader or listener. All around a solid beginner's astronomy for ages 4-7.
I loved this book! It is far more sophisticated than I would have thought, while still being accessible to young kids. I learned a few things myself, and this is one my kids would love to read over and over. I especially appreciated that the astronomer in the illustrations is a Black woman, and a mom. The story in no way focuses on these attributes of the astronomer, which is great, because it sends the message that it’s normal and unremarkable. Great book!
This is a book about astronomers, how and what they study. For ages 5 and up, this is a terrific first book about astronomy. The illustrations are really nice and help to show the concepts in a manner that makes it easy for children to understand. Highly recommended for libraries and home libraries.
This is the second book we've read in the Profession Series. The first one (Nurses) was more suitable for my 4-year-old, while this picture book is a better fit for older kids, aged 6-7.
I like these books because they focus on one particular profession and explain it to small children in their own language. The characters are diverse, in this case it's a female astronomer which suggests that it's not a job for men only. The illustrations are lively, colourful and gorgeous.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Clavis Publishing for an Advance Review Copy.
Astronomers and What They Do is a children’s picture book that does exactly what the title says. It provides an informative explanation that is written on a level for elementary level students to understand. The book explains where an astronomer may work and how an astronomer might need to dress. It also tells some basic information about the Earth, sun, different types of stars, meteors, and the moon. It explains how telescopes work and light. At the back of the book, there are some fun ideas for activities that budding astronomers can try right in their own backyard. This is a perfect book for children who are interested in space. As a teacher, I plan to add this to my classroom science library for students to enjoy anytime. I will also use this book as a resource during our space unit.
Bright, fun illustrations draw you into this book and make learning fun! Great book for any child that is itching for more knowledge on astronomy. A great buy for any parent who is encouraging their young reader towards brilliance. Geared towards older juvenile readers.
It's so much fun reading this book. Even though the recommended age for this book is between 5years old to 7 years old but honestly, I'm enjoying reading this book. A lot of information you will gain from this book.
For example, I didn't know where is the workplace of astronomers, until I read this book. A good book is always a book that when we read we gain knowledge. This book falls under that category.
This was a wonderful educational read! I read this with my (3) and (5) year olds who both love the moon and stars. They enjoyed this little story! Depending on if they ask about it again, we may have to purchase for their personal book collection!
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. A cute book by author Slegers about what astronomers do. I love that he uses black characters.
An incredibly rare and valuable book for elementary students! Books about jobs related to space (beyond your typical astronaut) are incredibly hard to come by for elementary kids, and this refreshing story shares a well-written and very informative glimpse into the every day tasks and role of astronomers.
A super cute introduction to astronomy for young kids! This book would be great for children ages 4-6 as it is straightforward, explaining daily tasks and instruments used. This would be great to spur backyard star exploration.
Thank you NetGalley and Clavis Publishing for providing this ARC.
This a a cute and informative little book based on astronomy with a target audience of 5 years and older. I am a mother who values educational and inclusive book for little ones.
Graphics were spot on. The pictures throughout the book are fantastic and beautiful and represent the story. I felt it also very inclusive.
The information was great, but I feel it is a bit too much for a 5 year old. Kids have short attention spans and I think any child may feel a bit overwhelmed by the information at this age.
Overall I think this would be a great addition to any child’s bookshelf.
When I first hit this series, with a book about what eye specialists do, I thought it was designed to reassure the young reader, to get the story of a visit to an eye test clinic across. But there's no need for such hand-holding here, as this is purely a look at a female star-gazer and what her work at the telescope in the mountains entails. Friendly and cartoonish illustrations flesh things out with their relevant captions, and the basics of space science – and the task to design an exo-planet – turn up at the end. The large spread of careers these books cover now make for a sensible investment from educators – they never force any ideas down the throat, but give good background to all of humankind's industriousness. This one is a clear four star.
This delightful little book packs a lot of information into an inviting, whimsically-illustrated children’s text. The reader learns the daily tasks and tools of an astronomer, the difference between an astronomer and an astronaut, and enough space facts to engage those students fascinated by the stars.
The text is direct and adequately concise, and the pictures are colorful and simple. I appreciate that the astronomer is depicted with darker sink. I also loved the invitations to dream and wonder that will inspire kids to take their knowledge and put it into action.
I would recommend this book as a lovely addition to any classroom library, and a great text for surveying the principles of astronomy in an early childhood setting.
