A slow-burn romantic suspense featuring a ranch, horses, cowboys, and an interesting twist at the end? Yes please!! I enjoyed this fast-paced story so much. I didn't wanna put it down (yeah, no chores got done until I finished this book). I enjoyed meeting Dillon and Cal and reading as they not only worked to discover who was sabotaging her ranch, but also as they discovered their feelings for each other. The slow-burn really starts to ramp up then. I gasped at the unexpected bad guy at the end.
Highly recommend
Many thanks to St Martin's Press and NetGalley for an advance copy of this book. My thoughts and opinions are my own and without bias or favor or expectation.
I enjoyed this contemporary cowboy romance with an interesting mystery plotline.
Dillon just inherited her aunt’s ranch, is being shot at, and had her prize stallion stolen. This was not the best time for hunky bull-rider Cal to be caught snoozing on her property. He wakes up to the vision of Dillion pointing a shotgun straight at him!
The characters of Dillion and Cal were interesting and made a great couple. I liked the interplay between the two as Dillion is trying to figure out if she can trust Cal. There are some good steamy scenes and just a bit of ogling on Dillon’s part. So fun!
There is a constant conflict and sense of danger as they try to figure out who is trying to kill Dillon. Since her life is at danger, of course Cal has to stay close by to watch over her.
Read this book if you enjoy contemporary cowboy romances with open door romance scenes.
A cowboy romance mixed with suspense, what more could I ask for?
Grant writes fantastic romantic suspense cowboy romance and that stands true with her latest release, That Cowboy of Mine.
The characters’ first meeting certainly left an impression! Despite being held at gun point, Cal is head over boots from the moment he lays eyes on Dillon. Both are fun characters but I particularly liked Dillon. She’s in danger but never the damsel in distress.
The suspense served as a great way to keep the pacing quick and leave readers wondering how everything will resolve in time for the HEA.
If you’re looking for romantic suspense, bodyguard romance, forced proximity, cowboy romance, and hero falls first romance give Grant’s new release a try!
I strongly consider not finishing this book. It took awhile to get started. The plot and twists were pretty unbelievable to be honest. The only character I could really get behind was Dillon. And even she annoyed me with how she let a complete stranger into her life when so many things were going wrong.
Cowboy Romance at its best!
Dillon loves ranching and all it entails. She does not enjoy it when someone keeps trying to get her to quit her land. Her main suspect is the slimy rancher next door - she can never find enough evidence to point his way though.
Cal didn't expect a gun pointed at his face when he woke up on a strange piece of land. But he and Dillon find out they may have a common enemy. But can Dillon get over her distrust of the handsome stranger before something nasty happens to her?
Dillon is stubborn, independent to a fault and slow to accept any kind of help. Cal is worried about the memories he can't recall and how he ended up on Dillon's land. But he knows that Dillon's in trouble and he is willing and able to lend a hand. He's well aware of Dillon's abilities and doesn't want to eclipse her, just assist.
There is no real big aha moment when the bad guys are revealed, they are pretty stand out from the get-go but I did feel myself grudgingly wanting some redemption for one of them!
Thanks NetGalley for allowing me to read this book before it is published in exchange for a fair review.
This was my first book by Donna Grant. Her writing style is clear and easy to read. Her main characters are very well developed and likeable. I had a few problems with the villains and the reasons behind their actions. But if you can waive that away, the book is enjoyable.

Set on a ranch inherited from a relative Dillon is enjoying life and is determined to make her new start count. But the Bar 4 ranch she now owns is wanted by some rather desperate individuals. So when she finds former rodeo star Cal passed out drunk on her land and her prized stallion missing Dillon is rightly suspicious. Yet, Cal has no idea how he ended up where he has but he's determined to find out and help Dillon get the answers as to why the Bar 4 has suddenly become such a desirable spot.
And with a nice mix of mystery and suspense. As well as a little romance, this was a really well-paced and engaging story. That I enjoyed reading a lot which is why I would happily recommend it to others.
3.5 stars
This was an entertaining romantic suspense read. Dillion has recently inherited a ranch from her aunt and has trouble brewing when she finds Cal on her land.
I enjoyed seeing these two get to know each other, even as they struggled with the outside forces trying to make things difficult. Ms Grant did an excellent job of balancing the suspense story line with the budding romance between Cal and Dillon. She also did a fantastic job of slowly revealing the master mind of the problems in such a way that the reader figures it out along with the characters.
As much as I enjoyed Cal and Dillon’s story, there were several small things - that I think really fall under personal preference- that pulled me out of the story. Those issues were what kept this from being a full 4 star read for me.
There are a small handful of authors I turn to when I need to get my fix of romantic suspense, and Donna Grant is among them. Books like this one are an excellent indication of why. Fast-paced, with intrigue that twists and turns until you start second, third, and fourth guessing everyone, That Cowboy of Mine was exciting, engaging, and sexy. And I absolutely loved it.
Cal Bennett is my favorite kind of hero—a cowboy with a soft underbelly, a strong sense of right and wrong, and no problem admitting when he’s catching feelings. Likewise, Dillon Young is my favorite kind of heroine—strong, resourceful, and brave but intelligent enough to know when to ask for help. Together, they make for a delightful couple even as they ride the highs and lows of falling in love while surrounded by greed, betrayal, and secrets.
The story builds to the explosive ending, which wraps everything up in a way that made me smile. I’m a sucker for an epilogue, and getting one here was a relief, truth be told. I needed those extra few pages because I wasn’t ready to leave the Bar 4 Ranch and its inhabitants.
That Cowboy of Mine was the perfect romantic suspense story that I didn't know I was looking for. This story certainly kept me on the edge of my seat from very early on!
When Cal Bennett woke up to the sound of a shotgun being cocked and it being pointed at him, he knew he wasn't in a good place. The problem was he didn't remember how he got to the ranch he now found himself waking up on with the ranch owner staring down at him.
Dillon Young is the ranch owner who found Cal hungover on her land and she's a bit out of sorts because strange and mysterious things have been happening on the ranch. She has a feeling it's likely her neighbor, Hank, who wants nothing more than to get his hands on her land.
When Dillion tells Cal what is going on, she's not sure if she trusts him or if he's in on the odd things happening. They enter into a tentative truce as he helps her try to figure out what is going on and things take another turn when someone makes an attempt on Dillion's life. Is Cal as innocent as he says he is or does he just not remember? Will the feelings that start to develop between Cal and Dillion last or will the stress of the situation end things before they start?
I was invested in this one from the start. I wanted to know what happened and it was well written and it unfolded at a good pace keeping the reader interested and invested in what the outcome would be. I enjoyed this one for sure!
**I voluntarily read an early copy of this title courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review**
A great story!
This is a stand-alone contemporary romance. Main characters Cal Bennet and Dillon Young are both well developed, showing us natural human traits and failings. Set in ranching country, we first meet Cal, who awakens after having passed out while drinking, but he’s in the middle of nowhere. He’s found by Dillon, who is searching her property for a missing show horse. This starts the mystery, which is a very large part of the story. Cal and Dillion are strangers to each other, and this gives the plot lots of conflict. There is romance also but is mostly secondary to the multiple questions that arise from the search for the missing horse. Donna Grant has written 2 other series set in Texas with cowboys as the main characters, but this book is set in a new location. That Cowboy of Mine is marked as a Christmas book, but it starts in the fall and continues on through the New Year. I enjoyed this book very much, and don’t hesitate to recommend it for anyone who enjoys Contemporary Romance and Western Themes. I was given this book through NetGalley and also the author and this is my honest opinion.
In ‘That Cowboy of Mine’ we meet Dillon Young. Dillon has inherited a ranch after her aunt died. Since her life was kind of a mess, after divorcing her husband after only a few months, inheriting the ranch seemed like perfect timing. But ever since Dillon started running the ranch, strange things have happened. And now she is being shot at! Luckily for Dillon, Cal finds himself waking up at the ranch, without any recollection of why or how he got there. But how can she trust him when everyone seems to have secrets?
‘That Cowboy of Mine’ was definitely a fun read. Although it wasn’t really mysterious, since we read also the point of few of the one who is behind Dillon’s attacks, I found myself intrigued with Dillon’s character. She was one tough lady, and I loved her character. I wished we got to learn a little bit more about her character, but there was enough in this read to make me enjoy it.
Cal’s character was definitely the most mysterious one. And I loved him. As a previous Bull rider, he finds himself on the ranch when he isn’t sure what to do with his life. After seeing Dillon, and learning she is in danger, he is determined to keep her safe and find out the truth about what’s happening to her. Although I have still a lot of questions about his character now that I finished the read, I simple adored the guy.
The romance between Dillon and Cal was kind of sudden, and could have used a little more pages in my opinions. But their chemistry was definitely fun to read about it, and I loved every moment I read about these two.
‘That Cowboy of Mine’ was a fun read that kept me interested.
Cowboy Who Done It? Yes, please!
Cal wakes up on Dillon’s land with her shot gun in his face. Now they have to figure out who’s threatening her and if he’s one of the good guys or with the bad guys!
I liked the mystery suspense aspect of the story and really liked both Dillon and Cal. I liked their subtle flirting and the dance scenes but then the suspense plot kicked into high gear and the romance got a little rushed for me. I would’ve also like a bit more Dusty in the story.
I received a complimentary review copy of this book but all opinions are my own.
Someone wants Dillon Young’s ranch and have ramped up their attempts to get her to sell. She knows that her neighbor is involved, but is he also the cause of the strange things that keep happening? When Dillon finds a man passed out on her property at the same time that her horse is missing, is he working for her neighbor? Cal Bennett wakes on Dillon’s property, awakened by a woman standing there with a shot gun. He can’t remember how he got there or where his truck is, but he does know that he is completely captivated by her. When he saves her from being shot, he is asked to stay and protect her from whomever has now tried to murder her. What will they learn as they search for why the ranch has become so important that it could lead to her murder? She still doesn’t know if she can truly trust Cal. Could he be working with the ones who are trying to steal her land? Romance and riveting suspense and danger as Cal and Dillon will finally learn who they could and couldn’t trust. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (paytonpuppy)
That Cowboy of Mine by Donna Grant
Dillon isn’t sure who to trust. Her neighbor wants her ranch, her newly purchased stallion has been stolen, and someone is trying to kill her. Inheriting her Aunt Dolly’s ranch was supposed to be a blessing but…will it be her safe haven or the death of her?
What I liked:
* Cal Bennett: bull rider, cowboy, currently unemployed, fell quickly for Dillon when he first saw her.
* Dillon Young: not an easy woman to warm up to though she has potential if she can decide who she is able to trust.
* The ranch and cowboy aspects of the story
* Chet Thompson: TRSCRA Ranger, widow, older, good man
* Being able to hate the bad guys
* That the story was easy to read – and read a bit like a soap opera at times…or perhaps one of those cartoons with the villain like Snidely Whiplash.
* The writing flowed
* it was an okay story with the caveat that I have enjoyed other books by this author more…especially her paranormal books/series.
I Knowing that there will be more books to read by this author in the future
What I didn’t like:
* The villains and the evil they perpetrated
Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more by this author? Yes
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC – This is my honest review.
3-4 Stars
Dillon Young is proud that she inherited her aunt’s ranch. The problem: someone is trying to run her off and is willing to do whatever it takes. Strange, dangerous things keep happening. Dillion suspects her no-good neighbor and fellow wealthy rancher Hank Stephens. Never a man to get his hands dirty, he sends others to get the job done. So, when the irresistible Cal Bennett is found passed out drunk on her property, Dillion is on high alert. Until someone takes a shot at her and Cal springs to her rescue. Waking up on a stranger’s property with a shotgun in his face is not Cal Bennett’s idea of a good time. His proposal: pose as lovers until they find out who is after her ranch.
A delicious mix of mystery suspense & romance. I love nothing better than a romance with more than a tad of mystery & this book certainly ticked all the boxes. I was drawn in from page one & totally gripped all the way through. I loved both Cal & Dillon & was totally invested in how their relationship grew from a shaky start. I thoroughly enjoyed it & read it in a sitting
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Cal Bennett was a bull rider, at least he had been but he had failed to qualify for the next rodeo so he headed to a bar to drink away the disappointment. The next morning, when he woke up with a shotgun in his face, on some rancher's property, he had no recollection of how he got there. But, the face behind the gun was stunning.
Dillon Young had inherited her aunt's ranch but weird things had been happening and when she found a stranger on her ranch and her prize horse missing, she was sure he was involved. But, when shots were fired at her and he saved her life, she was confused. Was he innocent and could he be trusted to protect her or did she need to keep her distance to save her life and her heart?
I really enjoyed the story and there were some major twists and turns, intrigue and murder. There was also some foul language, which I don't really like in my stories, especially f-bombs. There was one graphic sex scene in the book. Otherwise, I really enjoyed the story and felt it was well written.
I was given an arc copy of this book and I willingly offer my honest review.
That Cowboy of Mine
by Donna Grant
Narrated by Monica King
I received a digital copy of this audiobook from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I was also sent a widget for the kindle version of this book from NetGalley a good while back and did not realize this was the same book because the covers are different and I tend to request most of the romance audiobooks on NetGalley. Anyway.
I really enjoyed the narrator. She did an excellent job especially considering that most of the characters are male. Sound quality was also solid.
I had not read this author before but I like a cowboy/country western romance now and again being from the middle of no where myself. The book opens straight to action with our hero waking up in a field after a night of drinking unable to remember how he got there. Our heroine is pointing a shot gun in his face as he is on her land and her prize stallion is missing.
The synopsis notes that she has relatively recently inherited this ranch and he ends up working for her and there is a mystery of someone trying to sabotage/kill her. I’ve read some before that were very - she doesn’t know what she’s doing and it’s an enemies to lovers situation where he has to protect her and show her how to run a ranch etc however I was pleased to see that in this book she had a longstanding history with the ranch and was fully competent, knowledgeable and independent in her own right and our hero admired and respected that about her.
This is mid-low steam, half open door? Not tons of detail. Lots of action/adventure/mystery/intrigue. Trigger warnings - parent death, rodeo related death, manipulation
4/5
Suspense starts off from page one and keeps you interested in the storyline. It’s not hard to tell who the bad guys are. Dillon and Cal have a slow burn relationship. Overall a great cowboy suspense.
Donna Grant books are always a good time, and this one definitely follows suit. I loved all the suspense throughout the plot but I do wish this one was as hot & steamy as Grant’s other novels. But overall I really enjoyed this one.
