I wanted to learn more about the Rothschild family since there is so much terrible conspiracy theories that swirl around this family’s legacy. This specific book just focuses on the women in the British/European part of this very large family, which started out in the Jewish ghettos of Germany.
I absolutely loved the fact that this booked focused on the women, their struggles, as well as their incredible strength. However at times, the book was a bit dry and read also like A Bridgerton’s novel but without all the crazy, weird romance bits.
I learned a lot about these amazing women though and the terrible hate the family endured for being Jewish. I recommend this book so that readers can learn about Jewish women in history and know that the conspiracy theories they hear are a bunch of rubbish.
RATING: ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️
The Rothschild's are one of the world's powerful family dynasties. Natalie Livingstone wrote about the The Women of Rothschild for not as much is known about them. Livingstone did a lot of research for the book, but I did get a bit lost due to the many decades of their dynasty. I do enjoy history books and learning about something I knew little about. It always takes me longer to read a book that has so much information in it.
Thank you to Net Galley and St. Martin's Press for the ARC of The Women of Rothschild.
I loved this book. This book was an enthralling read. The women in this story are strong and fierce, when that behavior was out of fashion. I will be ordering this book for our library. This arc was provided by netgalley.
A great look into one of the biggest families in London and America. I loved getting to see the women's role in making the family so famous and influential rather than focusing on the men. Perfect for anyone interested in women's history and the upper class society.
This took me way longer to finish than I would have liked, but it's nonfiction and a little dry at times, which is the kind of book that I need to be in a specific mood to read. Overall though, I found it interesting and enjoyed it.
I didn't really now much about the Rothschild's going in, other than that they were a super rich family. This book focuses specifically on the women of the English branch of the family, who before now have been largely ignored and overlooked in favor of the males of the family. They had accomplishments in several different fields and were very interesting women to learn about.
This book was definitely well-researched and written. There were a lot of different people mentioned and sometimes it got hard to remember who was married to who and who was who's child, etc., so at one point I just sort of gave up on trying to keep all of that straight.
This is the first account I have read of the female line of the Rothschilds. Throughout history, the men of the family have been studied while the women were virtually ignored. Finally someone has remedied this. The book is an in-depth study of the Rothschild women beginning with Gutle, who emigrated to England in 1798. In the ensuing years, the women have been associated with historical figures such as Queen Victoria, Sir Alec Guinness, and Thelonious Monk, to name a few. They have a fascinating history and the story is long overdue.
NetGalley provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
This family made a huge contribution to the US society. This book talks about the women that were the basis of that family before they came to the US. It is interesting for the most part but does drag in a few places. Definitely worth the read for history buffs of the origins of the gilded age. I received this book from Netgalley. All opinions are my own.

Thank you to St. Martin's Press and Netgalley for an advanced readers copy of this book for my honest review.
This was a tough one for me as I am not a big non-fiction reader and this was a very fact heavy boom about the Rothchild women.
Recommend for serious history buffs!
The Women of Rothschild by Natalie Livingstone. Pub date: October 25, 2022. Rating: 3 stars. When I first read about this book, I was intrigued. I have always been fascinated by wealthy people with mystery and who are intriguing/a part of known history. This book is definitely a fascinating spread of the Rothschild women, but pretty dense. I found it hard to keep me motivated to read due to it reading more like a textbook. Overall, a lot of information that is not well known. Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for this e-arc in exchange for my honest review. #netgalley #thewomenofrothschild
This was a surprisingly interesting account of the history of the women of this wildly-influential family. As the women have typically been pushed aside, it's really great to have a book that highlights their lives, interests, independent accomplishments, and roles in the male-centric dynasty. Even as a history nerd, it took me a lot longer to get through this book than anticipated, but it was worth the effort. It is dense and definitely not an easy read, but it is a fascinating read, all the same.
A definitive chronicle of the Rothschild. It takes us back to the beginning. It lets us see how important a good match was to securing the future. It lets the grande dames take their place in dictating the norms in an insular society so consumed with their well being that they had little or no compassion for those outside their realm.
This was an especially interesting book about the women in this dynasty. The author put together interesting stories together with placing them in a historical context. I thank NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this ARC.
I began reading this on my kindle, but soon realized I had to have a physical copy of the book. There is a detailed family tree inside, as well as photographs, and I referred to each of these many times.
This is not a quick read. There are many names and historical events among the pages and I decided to take my time with this one. It was very well researched, but women’s roles in the past often leaves little for historians to find.
Each of the women featured were well-educated and capable in their own right. Many were multi-lingual and capable of handling the banking, often helping their husbands and/or sons with the business. They were involved in numerous charity and political causes.
The only women I had heard of prior to this book were Gutle and Miriam. Miriam was one of the most recent Rothschilds and she led such a productive life, she could have a book of her own.
Through the years, the family became more mainstream and many today are not as devout in their Jewish faith as their ancestors before them. They also became more relaxed in regard to marriages and marrying outside the family and faith.
I enjoyed reading about these women of the past and recommend this to other readers who enjoy history.
Many thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for allowing me to read an advance copy. I am happy to recommend this book and give my honest review.
This book was really informative. The narrative fulfilled the overall thesis, while maintaining an easy to read and easy to follow path. I had no idea about much of the information discussed and enjoyed learning about these women.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this dARC in exchange for my honest review.
4/5 🌟 An intricate and detailed look at the women of this venerable family. Beautifully written and impeccably researched.
This is an important book. Anytime there are books about men - there should be information about the women too. It takes both men and women to make a successful life.
The Women of Rothschild, tells the story of the women of this dynasty. They had to forge their own paths as Jews in a Christian society and women in a man’s world, Livingstone paints detailed portraits of each of these women. These women have to accomplish all that they do while being invisible and getting none of the credit for the success of the family. As the years go by, the women are easier to relate to This is a history book and so it is not a fast read.
Thank you so much to NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I am so happy that I got a chance to read "The Women of Rothschild". I've been looking forward to its release for some time. "The Women of Rothschild" provides the history of the Rothschild banking family from its origins. The majority of the book's perspective comes from the women of the English family line. It was super interesting to learn how the women did contribute to the family business even though they were not supposed to. I also enjoyed discovering how they contributed to other forms of social and political reform in England. Lastly, I found it interesting to see how religion and family dynamics affected their rise and maintenance of wealth and power throughout the ages in a predominantly Anglo-Christian country, This is an informative read and highly recommended for history lovers.
A very intriguing read about an incredibly interesting family. I was amazed at the power the women yielded, and how they choose to use their power. A must read for lovers of history and women!
This is an incredibly well researched book. The Women of Rothschild, tells the story of the women of the Rothschild dynasty. Forging their own paths as Jews in a Christian society and women in a man’s world, Livingstone paints detailed portraits of each of these women. I’m not going to lie, there are A LOT of women profiled in this book. So many that I had difficulty keeping them all straight. But my favorite was Miriam Rothschild, possibly because she was a more contemporary figure, but also because she was breaking barriers and making scientific discoveries all without the same education of her male peers. This isn’t a book you are going to fly through. This is book that you are going to spend some time with and walk away more knowledgeable about the women behind some very powerful men…and those are the stories that are the most interesting.
The Women of Rothschild was a very interesting topic about a family I had heard about, but didn’t actually know much about. I especially enjoyed how it focused on the women of the family. The book was very well researched, but I did find it a little long at times. Overall, I enjoyed this book and learning more about this history of this historical family.
